Audible: Favre’s First Month

@ Miami (vs. the old QB)
New England (vs. the hated QB)
@ San Diego (vs. the climbing QB)
Arizona (vs. Gary Myers’ “could have been” QB)

That’s the teams first month. Just think about the quarterback matchups … could be some good football.

Before Favre, I thought the team would do well to escape September at 2-2, but as I think about it with Favre on the team, I’m wondering if I can re-set my expectations.

Are you?  If so, where do you expect to see a W that you weren’t counting on before?

  1. I expect a win vs. the Dolphins and a win vs. the cardinals. Perhaps even a win against the chargers… but basically i’m still looking at the schedule and saying 2-2.

  2. New England is going DOWN! Start the Chatter!!!

  3. if bob sutton knew defensive play calling…then i would have to say 3-1…or maybe a surprise 4-0…

but since sutton doesn’t know how to call the right defense ( as in defensive play calling ) 2-2 sounds about right…just my thoughts…

  4. Week 1 — I don’t see Henne doing enough to beat the Jets once Pennington is injured —

Week 2 — If Brady plays all bets are off — If he doesn’t play all bets are off –

Week 3 — This game is all about Mike Nugent so unfortunately the Chargers win –

Week 4 — I had said pre-Favre this would be about whether Mangini could keep the Jets focused after three high profile games Weeks 1-3 — Now he doesn’t have to — Favre will get in the face of anyone who isn’t ready to play including one concussed ex-con wideout from Ribault High School –

  5. Hmmm…still hard to see more than 2 wins. Give Favre a chance to get warmed up, add in that the Jets seem to play better on the road against NE the last few years, and maybe they can beat the Cheatriots later on.

  6. MIA – this is a must
NE – BIG game. The Jets need to stake a claim
    SD – good team
ARI – hope we don’t look past them

I hate to say it, but I still think we’re 2-2. As Brett gets more in tune, it should all be good. Hope I’m wrong. 3-1 would be a statement, especially if we beat NE.

  7. escape?!?! were going 4-0 im being realistic not biased we have the potential to beat any team in the NFL.

  8. 3-1
Win week 1(Pennington still wants us to win vs the fins)
Win week 2 (Convincing win, thus setting us up for spectacular season)
Lose Week 3 (Brings us back down to “Jets” reality)
Win Week 4 (by a very small margin)

Finishing out the first month 3-1 and headed into our bye week. Followed by 5 winable games till we head to NE to break Brady’s leg (if we dont in week 2)

  9. Basett:
Great post. That Miami game has take great significance !! Hasn’t it though? Can’t wait. I hope all the Farve worshipers would still be going to the altar

  10. i think we are a lock to go 2-2 but something good can happen like tom brady dies and LT suddenly retires but something bad hapens like CP gives out all our secrets and matt lienart gorws into something huge and then we might be looking at 0-4 but i dont see that happening i dont care if we lose to san diego or arizona but i just wanna stick it to brady and pennington ( but i respect pennington though )

  11. 3-1 would be a dream. Not saying it’s impossible, but you have to figure that this team won’t hit it’s stride until after the bye week.

  12. Week 1. Jets will win this game. The Jets defense will eat CP up. Dolphins defense is a big question mark.

Week 2. This will be a tough game for the Jets to win but they will have to beat The Patroits at some point this year and this could be an opportunity. Tom Brady will not be in his stride yet.

Week 3. Another tough game. This will not be a QB battle though. Farve wins that battle. But the Chargers have to be favored to win the running game and defensive battles. The Jets first loss. But the two teams will meet again with the Jets clicking on all cylinders later in the playoffs.

Week 4. Bret Farve will pick apart the secondary. It won’t be an easy win because the Cardinals have a lot of talent on offense and are tough against the run.

    It looks like 3-1.

  13. NFL network is showing the Jets 2nd preseason game again. I’m going now to watch the wonder of Farve.

  14. I like everyone else would take 2-2 going into the bye. I have little fear going into Miami and SD. I know SD is talented but we have beaten them on the road before and they have Norv Turner at the wheel. Making a statement in game #1 would do wonders for this team going into the home opener!! Chad Henne will see action as we bomb Pennington

  15. Still thinking 2-2, but i’m not going to be mad at them if they win more than that

  16. With some luck, the JETS could be 3-1 or 4-0. Please don’t wake me up.

  17. Well if nothing else they Jets look like they can beat any team even the Pats. Mangini did it with Chad and a D with the wrong players so why not believe they can do it with improved players in important positions.

Maybe the luster has worn off the Pats anyway. Who knows?

I think it’s safe to say that they should have a chance to win every game. 2-2 is not a bad way to start. With some luck 3-2. With a lot of luck and some crushing run D and a pass rush, if they can manage that, 4-0.

  18. While the dolphins seem to be an easy win, i’m not so sure about the cardinals. Our CB2 spot is easily the weakest part of this team, and with the ARZ WR’s, it seems like they’re in a good spot to exploit that weakness.

Add to that the possibility that the defense and o-lines may not have completely jelled yet, I think that game is a toss up.

I don’t see wins vs. the chargers or pats, but at least we get to play the former without gates at full strength

  19. Brandon “You’re With Me”riweather

im not sure about their WR tandem if you havnt heard anquan bolden wants out and even if it is resolved it wont get resolved for weeks so bolden is gonna be behind a bit

week 1 bow out unless CP gives out our secrets then they will atleats get 3 points

week 2 we lose unless brady dies ( i hope ) but he is perfect in the meadowlands

week 3 no chance in hell unless antonio gates is still injured and LT retires before the game

    week 4 victory i think

  20. september is the toughest part. 2-2 would be great. i’d sign up for that now.

  21. I think the Jets really could take the Pats, or at least give them a run for their money. Think about the famous undefeated (well, almost) pats of last year. Nearly beaten by the Ravens, nearly beaten by the Eagles, nearly beaten (and subsequently beaten) by the Giants. They are in reach, and their arrogance is ripe to be turned against them.

    Go underdogs!

  22. week 1 – Win
week 2 – lose unless a miracle occurs(highly unrealistic) or the pats stop cheating (highly highly unreaslistic)
    week 3 – toss up
week 4 – Win, the cards still suck

  23. Before Favre, I was thinking 2-2 wuld be good. After Favre, I’m thinking we better be 2-2 or it could get ugly. I will be disappointed if we are 2-2, I hope we can steal a win against either the Pats or the Chargers.

  24. Before Favre came, I was saying that the Miami game was a must win game, because of the obvious: worst team in NFL, all our new FA’s, all the money spent, etc. I would be be incredibly embarassing to have the off season we had and lose to a 1-15 team. But, now with Favre here it is even more of a must win game because of all the reasons stated above plus we can’t let Chad beat us. Anyway, we have to win the first game to give all the moves and our program credibility.

I think if we are going to beat the Pats it will happen in the second meeting.

We have always been able to play SD well, remember the game (2003 or 2004) where we beat them 41-0(?) after the bye, and the playoff game in 2005? we are a much improved team, and I think we will shock them.

Arizona? I look at them with the same disdain that much of the NFL looks at us with, so I say we beat them.

I’m looking at 3-1 on our way to an 11-5 season.

  25. The Giants game this Saturday will tell us just how much of a chance we have against the Pats and SD. If the team is still settling in, I’d take 2-2.

  26. Guys, why cant we win every one of those games? As for NE- Last time we played them we hung in there for most of the game, Bob Sutton needs to hit the ground running, if anyone noticed, our D played lights out after the bye last year. Now, with Jenkins in the NT position, we should be able to (maybe not STOP the run but) control the line. Therefore we can apply pressure to Brady from the edges, think about how deep we are in pass-rushers. Gholston needs to be amped for THAT game.
as for SD- We can hang in there with those guys, dont forget that Gates has a lingering toe injury. He cant make cuts on routes.

  27. nyckage,

I’m assuming boldin plays. If boldin holds out, then I mark the cards game into the must win category.

As for the rest of it, it seems like you agree with my win/loss/loss/toss up assessment.

  28. Sorry to be the broken SOJ record, but the first game of this season is the most important game of the year.

If we win that and lose two, no one doubts we could still be 500 before the bye. But not one of you above give serious credence to Bill P and Chad kicking Tangini’s tail.

I think everyone has forgotten what building up both lines, getting a team to play hard and not make mistakes, and getting a QB who can do what he does consistently can achieve when molded by a Bill P.

I have not forgotten what he did with Kotite’s 1-15 team nor with Ray Lucas and Ric Meir as his QBs.

I sure hope the team is a lot more concerned than all of you with the opener away and in Miami. I suspect from now on as long as Bill P is there, it will no longer be a home game on the road.

If we lose this game, I suspect the downward gyre will swirl away all our hopes.

  29. Give yourself a kewpie doll, Harlan. Miami’s o-line is vastly improved. We may be very to lucky to be facing them in the first game, while Jake Long is still a little raw.

  30. Whether we have misgivings or not, we still have to say whether they win or lose. Saying the Jets win doesn’t say by how much and I think it may be close but not so close that I worry the ’same ol Jets.’ These Jets will not lose this game.

  31. jerry,

Same can be said for Miami. They are very lucky to be playing us so early before we start clicking on all cylinders. Also, Vernon Gholston will be very raw as well.

I have high hopes for this season. I still think that we might start off 2-2 but 3-1 should be considered a great accomplishment for the Jets early in the season with so many new faces on our team. Also, that is the toughest part of our schedule. 3-1 or even 2-2 are signs of good things to come in my opnion.

  32. Najy, The big difference is that Gholston isn’t expected to start and will be brought in slowly, while Long is expected to be in on every play protecting the QB’s blind side. I do think the Jets will win this one, but Miami doesn’t look to be the pushover they were last year.

  33. Jerry, Exactly my point. They will only see Gholston on 3rd and along as opposed to every play. Dont you think that is kind of a break on their side.

I am not saying that Gholston is going to make a huge difference in the game, but he can impact it if he plays to his potential.

Anyway, I too think that we can beat the dolphins because the Jets wont be a pushover this year either. We only won 3 game more than the dolphins and 2 out of our 4 wins came against them and 1 against KC. Its not like we were great last year either.

  34. The only thing having Gholston in there will do is increase the other teams’ pancake block statistics.

  35. Has anyone seen Gholston get pancacked yet this preseason???

I am noticing that alot of Jets fans have negative attitudes about everything. Just take it for what it is. Then we complain that the media is negative but the fans are more negative than the media sometimes.

Gholston had 2 bad preseason games and people are ready to say he is a bust. Just stop, watch the games and football and then back up what whats being said by statistics and well thought out comments.

Saying that Gholston will give the other team pancake block statisics is nothing more than a negative opnion about one of our future players that isnt backed up by any statistics.

  36. Harlan,

The big difference this time around is that Parcells won’t be on the sidelines, he’ll be up in the booth, and that means a lot. Tony Sparano is a rookie HC, CP is still learning their system, and Long is a rookie left tackle, who should be in for a long game.

Miami has made some changes to both their lines, but thet still remain questionable.

I agree with you that the game is very very important, and a must win, but I think the Jets will steam roll the fish to start the season.

  37. I miss the Friday questions to the other AFC East teams. What ever happened to them? We could be posing great questions to the fish leading up to Week 1.

That is right BP won’t be coaching but Ricky Williams seems to be the starter. Last year Ronnie Brown was leading the league in rushing before he got injured and now he is being demoted for Ricky Williams, who as I remember, was pretty damned good.

This won’t be an easy game but then again the receiving corps of the Fins is pretty thin it seems to me. Ted Ginn is in his 2nd year and between him and Marty Booker they had 3 receiving TDs in `07. Chad is not going to like his receiving options I just hope his line protects him long enough to keep him alive for the season.

  39. I think with Brett now leading the charge, we could steal the game at home against the Pats.

I know it’s easier said than done but I really think this is the year the Pats feel some demise. Those DL have a lot of wear and tear, the linebackers are still aging (Minus Mayo) but the weakness is clearly the secondary.

With Favre throwing deep balls, opening up the running game, I think we can put up points on that D.

We’ll have trouble, alot of it, with their passing game but the difference is we now have a 2 min offense and the ability to score everytime down.

    Jets take 31-28

3-1 for the first month, I think the San Diego will be a tough go based on the road.

  40. Chris got it right

  41. Thanks Jerry! My own kewpie.

I will be very disappointed if we don’t squish the fish. But I won’t be shocked.
