Word was yesterday that two of the Jets starters, DE Shaun Ellis (broken hand) and Laveranues Coles (sore leg) returned to practice with the team. Coles was the more limited of the two, not participating in 11 on 11s according to Newsday’s Erik Boland, but that they are both practicing again, which is a good sign.

I know Brett and Laveranues are professionals. Yet, it will be interesting to see how their shakey report pans out.

i like coles fing the media this training camp. coles is all business and all he wants to do it win. he put his body on the line every time chad threw those famous hospital passes to him
i hope coles has the attitude for this season that it me against the world and I need to prove myself each game
-
Glad to see that the diaper rash cleared up.
-
All the quotes so far have been of Favre talking to Coles — Still no quote of Coles talking to Favre –
-
Coles attitude comes from his guaranteed contract. Mistake to give a concussion victim a ton of guaranteed money. He is a gamer but, the fans rely on the media, to follow their favorite players. When he treats the media like crap – he is treating us like crap. Joe Horn would wake his butt up. Go get him, Tannenbaum.
-
Hey, Harvlis, WE treat the media like crap!
-
We need Ellis to have a good year
-
Harvlis,
Way off base. Coles doesn’t owe the media anything. If he is truly unhappy (which I think he is) do you think it would be better for him to use the media as an outlet for his frustration a la Chad Johnson.
I, for one, think its refreshing when a player chooses to handle his personal issues internally instead of dragging the whole team through the mess that the media would create.
The media sees the potential for a juicy story here and because Coles won’t give it to them, they are left to speculate and talk about him “not speaking” to the media.
Coles does whine more often then he should, but he is handling this the right way. You can’t blame him for being hurt by his friend getting cut (nobody can tell someone else how they should feel), but for once he is doing the right thing by not making this a bigger circus than it already is with Favre in town
-
How Coles deals with the media is his business not ours. Last year the same media voted him the most accessible and best Jet to talk to.
Styne:
Last time I checked it actually took 2 people to conduct a conversation. Perhaps when Favre and Coles hook up for about 1,200 yards you will end your diatribe of negativity about Coles.Havlis:
Coles attitude does not come from guarantee money, it comes from loyalty to his friend Chad. Coles attitude on the field is excellent as are the numbers he puts up.This endless and fact less rhetoric about LC being a cry baby with an attitude issue is absurd. Firstly, they have absolutely nothing to do with his on field performance, secondly, his relationship with the press is his business not ours, and lastly the criteria you use to evaluate him is totally subjective and steeped in some absurd dislike you have dreamed up which at best is delusional
Bottom line being a mans actions speak louder then his words or lack of words, and Coles has demonstrated countless times through his on field actions exactly who he is.
Tough, driven, determined, team player, team captain, productive, leader…oh yes, and our best receiver.
-
Jetchick, I think you make many good points. If Coles feels that in talking to the media he might say some things that would be negative, and piss off the organization and put himself in a bad light, then he should avoid it. At the same time it is very understandable that some fans feel he is taking a very long time to get over this and is being a little immature. He is a grown man, and the NFL is a business. What would be so bad about Cloes telling the reporters that it is hard for him to lose his good friend, and right now his emotions about it are running high and he wants to wait a while before he talks about it? So I think that you are being a little hard on the fans that do not like how Coles is handling the situation.
Also, Cotchery may have passed him as our best receiver. We’ll see once the season starts.
-
Coles is a team player, but what we have so far is a collection of mercenaries, I think he hates it.
-
jetchick
well put…
-
jetchick,
I gotta say Johnny Styne’s comments are hardly a diatribe. Are you and Coles still carrying a torch for Chad?
Rather, I’m looking forward to watching Laveranues and Brett’s budding “Step Up 2″ bro-mance add up to 1,200 yards!!!
-
Dean Barbella:
Johnny Styne, and his spiteful vindictive senseless ramble about Coles exemplifies a mean spirited and fact less minority opinion of a loyal and dedicated player. A player that by his on field toughness and production exemplify the spirit of teamwork and achievement.
Your reference point of me and Coles carrying a torch for Chad is of course a poor choice of words. I am glad that we made a serious upgrade to Favre, however I will never forget Chad’s character and courage.
Let me leave you with a quote from Marcus Henrey….a young and upcoming Jets receiver I”ve learned a lot in camp, especially from Laveranues Coles and Jerricho,” Henry said. “They’ve taught me some tricks of the game.”
Coles, he said, has sat next to him in meetings and gone over video with him, giving him pointers on “how to attack a DB.”Coles does things like this for our team on a regular basis….yet I never hear Styne mention it.
-
jetchick,
Touché, Johnny Hates Jazz. and apparently, Laveranues too.
[Cheasy]
I’ve known of Coles leadership. Mangini speaks highly of his contributions on and off the field. I like your Favre for Pennington take. Chad’s a classy guy; and I wish him well… just wish he wasn’t in a Phins uniform.
-
hey JETCHICK….let me ask you ONE THING…where were COLES’ LOYALTIES to CHAD when he went RUNNING TO WASHINGTON FOR A BIG PAYDAY!!??? GIVE US ALL A BREAK!
-
MANGINI ALSO SPOKE HIGHLY OF PETE KENDALL ALSO!! AND??
-
KC…
Early in Coles career he made a decision to go for the ridiculous amount of money the Redskins offered him. He conferred with his friend Chad who also advised him to take advantage of the opportunity.
Try for a moment if you will to understand that Coles grew up in poverty, and that an offer of so many millions was difficult to pass up.
How many Americans do you know that would in fact turn their back on such a large sum.
I believe LC regretted his decision soon after departing the Jets, and wanted to return to his team.
Bottom line being that for all but one year of his career Coles has been a loyal team mate and a top producer for our team.
I believe his team mates are in a far better position to judge his loyalty then either of us, and they elected him captain just last season.
There is for certain a corrupting and manipulative power that money brings. That sometimes loyal people with the best intentions make bad decisions around large dollar amounts.
In my mind he has more then made up for that decision and on balance has the support and admiration of his team mates, and a majority of our fan base.
-
and he’s the ONLY one in the NFL who grew up in POVERTY!?(dont play that card)that has NOTHING to do with LOYALTY.trust me when I say,I LIKE LC. we NEED LC to have a BIG year and be a LEADER. as far as I am concerned he was DOING neither when complaining about his SALARY(meanwhile hes one of the higest paid reciever in THIS LEAGUE and not even in the top TEN BEST!?)and not talking to FAVRE who BY FAR gives us OUR best CHANCE TO WIN(which is all lc wants right??) I can CARE LESS if he didnt/doesnt talk to the MEDIA…screw them! all I/WE care about is winning NOW,and him throwing hissy fits does NOT help ANYONE! i HOPE he proves me wrong.
-
KC,
When LC signed with washington, he was a restricted free agent and did so with the understanding that the jets would match. Basically as a way to get him fair market value.
However, because the deal he signed had some things in it that the jets couldn’t match (13 mil sign bonus), they had to let him go. He had been vocal about how he was pissed that the jets reneged on their promise to match.
here’s an excerpt from an article on the subject…
“I said, ‘Listen, you’re getting everything you deserve.’ I told him I don’t want you to go, but I want the best for you,”‘ Chrebet said.
**Coles blasted Edwards and the Jets, saying they made him promises they could not keep. The two have since made up.**
“I told Laveranues that as long as I was here, I would always try to keep him here,” Edwards said. “He’s my type of player and we tried as hard as we could to do that. At the end of the day, it was a business decision.” .
-
This is what Chad has to say about Coles, andI believe his words count more heavily, and are far more accurate then any of ours on this topic.
“Laveranues Coles’ best trait is loyalty. He’s an extremely loyal guy. That’s what has made him great in the league, and it’s taken him a long way in life. I don’t fault him for that and I respect him for that. But once the games start and the whistle blows, he’ll play hard for the Jets. I don’t think anybody can ever question that.”
Pennington was also asked whether he thought Coles would take it as hard as he (apparently) has.
“There’s a special bond there. We came into the league together, and we’ve been great friends for a long time. But Laveranues also has that edge about him. [The silent treatment] is not something that I would make too big a deal of.”
-
Bill, PFflyer, and Jetchick — Fans talk bad about the media, because they generally s-ck but, we rely on them for info. This little tirade or charade by Coles, where he is giving the media the silent treatment, is childish bullsh-t. A “man” would talk to them but, not answer the questions that he did not like. All he has to say is “next question”. He is not handling this right. We pay his salary by purchasing tickets, jerseys, etc…. He owes us an open line of communication. The way he is handling this does not endear him to most of his fans.
If he is doing this because of his loyalty for Chad, he should be mad at Tangini, not take it out on the media and the fans. Football is a business. What happened with Chad was all business — get rid of an acceptable QB and pick up a Hall-of-Famer who can take the team to another level. No Brainer. Coles should understand that. Chad made millions and was injured for a good part of his time here. Ultimately, Chad was picked up by Miami and will be making lots more millions. What’s the problem? I think Coles has had too many concussions.
-
Harvlis:
Firstly, the players owe you nothing more then their best on the field…which Coles gives you each and every game. If fans depend on his interaction with the press rather then his performance on the field to endear himself…well those fans can start watching soap operas rather then football.
Coles was elected the best player to interview by the beat reporters just last year, and its his business not yours( nor do you have a claim on because you are a fan) how and when he speaks to the press.
Lastly, making a joke about concussions is a bad joke and in poor taste. Let me assure you that Coles mind is both alert and agile. It kills me when certain fans bitch about LC’s paycheck, and then make fun of him for the concussion he got earning that paycheck.
-
Jetbitch,
Of course, his play is what counts. I am a big fan, always have been. Part of sports is the information that we get about the players. That is why many of us are logging on to The Jets Blog. I want to hear about my favorite players. I think you are here to rip people. That is all you have done from day one. When players clam up or act like children, they deserve to be criticized. You never saw Chad act like a child, in the face of a brutal media.
I see no reason for LC to be upset. As I stated, Favre is on another level than Chad. He can’t be upset that management chose Favre over Chad. They had to release Chad abruptly due to cap restrictions, I believe. Finally, Chad is now the starting QB on another team, making almost the same money that he was making with the Jets. His anger is not logical, hence the comment about his concussions.
How can you assure me that his mind is alert and agile? You hanging with LC lately? Maybe he told you why he is acting like a child?
Your harsh criticism of my concussion comment tells me that you have repressed anger problems. It comes out in your criticism of everyone on this blog. You need to take a chill pill and make some positive posts, instead of being so critical.
-
Havlis
I rip people that speak without knowing the facts, that can not substantiate their position except by subjective analysis, and who demonstrate continued mean spirited commentary about players i respect and admire.
My understanding of Coles mental abilities come from work he does in the community that I am aware of, and which his ability to be articulate, focused and intelligent are made quite clear.
As far as your amateur psychological evaluation concerning my repressed anger…well it is as fact less, and unfounded as several other of your observations as they relate to our team.
Public figures also happen to be private citizens who can deal with the press as they see fit. If Coles chooses not to speak with them that is his business not yours.
If however his performance as a player becomes an issue then you have every right to ask that he be held accountable. So far that has not been the case.
-
Jetchick
You ripped me when I stated that Clowney was faster than LC.
I don’t care if LC talks to the press. If LC is not talking to Farve that is a problem. Also telling a fan FU when they state a fact is uncalled for.
That being said I did not see LC as a problem child on the sidelines during the Washington preseason game. I saw a player talking to Clowney when he came of the feild more as a coach than a problem.
-
Harvlis
The Jetbitch comment is uncalled for.
-
It’s like an argument of who can make the harshest comment with the biggest words. This is a blog and opinions dont have to be fact based. We can rip any player or fellow blogger untill who ever is running the site says so. If you cant handle it….
-
Pat d
I did not rip you on who was the faster receiver, I questioned you as to where you got access to the side by side stop watch race that Coles and Clowney ran.
Fact being that Coles 40 yard time is faster then Clowney. Any statement to the contrary is based on some unsubstantiated opinion or observation.
You were also attempting to compare a former all pro, and our top receiver with a young upcoming player that is fighting for a roster spot. Although I think Clowney is a very good prospect, he is not comparable to Coles at this point in his career.
As far as LC telling a fan to FO…that was indeed wrong. However it seems to me that Woody Johnson tells the fans to FO on a daily basis with price increases for tickets, unheard of gouging, and an overall elitist approach to us the fans.
Yet we stand in line for more.
It is those unsupported opinions which make little or no sense that I take exception to.
-
Jet—-, Since when are your interpretations of the facts the gospel. We each have our own opinions. It is the norm for players to speak to the media. Coles current “silent treatment” IS my business. I can have an opinion on it. As I stated, it is, IN MY OPINION, childish. If you feel it is not, you can state your opinion in a civil manner without attacking. I can criticize anything I want about a player – his girlfriend, wife, hairdo, spikes, socks — anything. I don’t need your okay.
-
OK Harvis….go ahead and worry about hair do’s and socks. Tell other posters they have repressed aggression or some other such nonsense. Yet if someone questions the logic, accuracy or overall wisdom of your post they are way off base?
You are certainly entitled to prioritize and comment on the trivialities of off field behavior as it relates to Coles and the press. What is it that you think you need to know about LC that his actual playing does not answer for you? Also why does your need to know exceed his right to not tell you through the press?
I do not interpret facts, I simply state them. It sounds to me like your looking for a gossip column rather then a blog that discusses the sport of football.
The private off field life of players is their business not yours, and unless they break the law we have no business in their business.

Glad to see Coles is back. From what I heard, he had a pretty serious injury — during a recent visit to the jersey shore, he got some sand lodged in his fallopian tubes.
That’s as nice as I could say it.
