David Clowney’s Injury Status
Jane McManus from the Journal News looked into the Clowney injury and spoke to Mangini and Clowney’s agent about the Wide Receiver’s status.
David Clowney has missed practice since a collision last Saturday took him out of a game against Washington. Jets coach Eric Mangini wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of the inury other than to say it was to his shoulder, but Clowney’s agent Brian Mackler said Clowney shouldn’t be out for the season.
“He’ll miss a couple of games,” said Mackler, after Clowney received a second medical opinion on the injury.
Well that’s good to hear. Some collarbone breaks can take a while, and it’s often a “if ___ hurts, then don’t do it” kind of a recovery regimen.
It might not make Mangini happy that Clowney’s agent said anything at all about the injury, but Clowney has had a great camp, and Mackler’s first loyalty is to his client, so he wants him to make a team, whether that’s in New York, or somewhere else. Regardless, Mangini had an interesting quote, one that might indicate he’s liked what he’s seen from Clowney so far.
He (Clowney) had an excellent training camp. He, to me, is like (Brett) Ratliff is at quarterback. A guy who came in, who started a little bit slower, had a lot of assets physically, really worked at it mentally and physically in the offseason program. You could see the results of that work translating into the games. Sometimes it happens in OTAs. Sometimes it happens in training camp, but then to actually see it executed in games, that’s the progression you’re looking for.
It’s that last sentence that tells the tale. Mangini has been saying all spring that you want to see the progress, not just in practice, but translation to the game. If that’s what he’s seen from Clowney, he’s going to have to work to find him a spot on this roster while he recovers.

If we didnt garuntee coles contract we could be trading him right now for Bouldin!
Is Clowney the reincarnation of Stevie Anderson?

Reprocity, and pay Boldin with what? The one million cap savings from Barrett’s renegotiation and the savings from Coles won’t cover Boldin’s yearly salary.
h
Almost, Harlan. They are currently $2.5m under the cap and Boldin’s cap number is only $2.75m but of course he wants an extension that will push that closer to $10m.
The key though is Coles. You refer to his savings, but because his salary is guaranteed, there is no saving. In fact, the whole $12m due to him would hit the 2008 cap (plus there would be $1m of dead cap in 2009. So, there while they save $6m by not paying Coles, they also incur a cap hit of $12m. In other words, it is not just Boldin’s salary demands that are prohibitive to this move, but also the cap hit for trading Coles, which I think was partly repoman’s point.
However, yes, even if they *could* trade Coles with no cap implications, they still might not be able to fit Boldin’s salary under the cap that easily.
