Pennington Speaks up for Coles

Pennington spoke to the press about his good friend Laveranues Coles press strike since the trade for Favre / release of Pennington from the Jets.  Pennington spoke to ESPN.com and had this to say:

“Laveranues Coles’ best trait is loyalty.  He’s an extremely loyal guy. That’s what has made him great in the league, and it’s taken him a long way in life.  I don’t fault him for that and I respect him for that. But once the games start and the whistle blows, he’ll play hard for the Jets. I don’t think anybody can ever question that.”

Pennington was also asked whether he thought Coles would take it as hard as he (apparently) has.

“There’s a special bond there.  We came into the league together, and we’ve been great friends for a long time.  But Laveranues also has that edge about him. [The silent treatment] is not something that I would make too big a deal of.”

As far as Pennington’s adjustment, Ted Ginn Jr. seems to be very excited to have someone who knows what they are doing lining up under center, but according to this Sun-Sentinel Q&A, it’s still not settled as to which Chad will be starting when the Jets come to town.  Over here in the PBP, the story is a little different.  In all accounts, it’s likely Pennington, but Sparano is doing his best to ape Parcells, so no surprises that he won’t commit.

  1. Take that Don Strock jersey off –

  2. We’ll see how excited those WR’s are when Chad gets them knocked out going over the middle.

  3. Bassett, could you please remove that picture? I can’t handle seeing CP in that turquois and orange.

  4. zen … you’re a big boy … i think you can handle big boy stuff like…

a certain fat man in a red suit who is mythical
    the birds and the bees
the reality of our former beloved QB …

    :)

  5. Maybe for the Miami game we should dress Coles out as a cornerback. If chemistry exists, perhaps Chad won’t be able to stop himself from lobbing interceptions to Coles.

  6. It hurts us all Zenlaw. My best friend of ten years is a Dolphins fan. (In my defense I have bad taste.) He bought me this huge autographed picture of Chad scrambling in the snow vs the Steelers for Christmas. (it also shows a failed tackle by Kimo surprise surprise) I gave it back August 7th the day of his bday. I hate the Dolphins.

  7. very good spent..

  8. It was a very classless move to go to the dolphins.

The Jets organization gave him the freedom to do whatever he wants and he chose to go to the dolphins out of all the teams with Qb problems in the league.

    Simply classless.

  9. Najy, that is where you are wrong, everything Chad has done in this whole process has been classy. If anyone was classless in this process it has been the Jets. Now I am not saying I fault them because they got better and giving his release is better than a trade, but Chad has been our QB and then he gets dragged through the mud and then released. I would have picked the Dolphins also, he goes to where he knows people like Parcells and Sean Ryan

  10. nelson17,

How do you know its not spite??

He could have gone anywhere else, like Minnesota, but he chose the dolphins who are our rivals..

That to me is messed up.

  11. Favre had the balls to say that he wanted to go to Minnesota inspite of Greenbay. Chad is “too classy” to say taht but deep down, we all know why he went there.

  12. Nothing suggests he had multiple offers. Had he waited, which would have been nuts, he might have gotten more, but this late in the pre-season, you take what’s offered.

  13. I am not defending Chad at all but he did get great money to start for the Dolphins. He would have gotten league minimuns from GB or Minn and would not have been the starter. Either way, he will not last the year playing behind that O-line. Get ready Chad Henne!!

  14. Nothing is suggested.. All i know is that the person who has been the face of our organization for years is now playing for our arch rivals. What does that tell you about character and loyalty?

  15. nelson 17
    I agree 100%

  16. Chad is classy, intelliegent dude. That said, there’s no link in my mind between spite and class.

Who can fault the guy for feeling non-plussed by losing job to Favre?

Like Pennington, Favre chose to both harness ‘the snub’ by his former team to attempt a hierarchy of needs:

    1) New Home with Division Rival
    2) Familar Faces and Playbook
    3) Weak QB Depth; Strong Team

I’m guessing money, familiarity and spite played a role, because Vikings fledgling QB Tarvaris Jackson and strong team under a dome seems more compelling to me than a chance to beat out Josh McCoun and tutor Henne and Beck!

  17. They had to have played a role. Chad didnt go to Miami because they made him an offer. He had his personal reasons.

  18. The best thing Chad could have done for the Jets was go to the Dolphins because with the Dolphins he’ll start and that means two automatic victories for the Jets — (No way he starts for the Pats or Bills) –

  19. On an unrelated note, did anyone see Chad’s two tosses to Ginn. Both were a little high and laid Ginn out. If the safety had been in position, Ginn would’ve been killed. I always thought the “Chad kills his WRs” claim was overblown, but Ginn won’t last with passes like that over the middle. He is built for the deep out, not for over the middle passes. If I were Ginn, I’d be careful what I wish for.

  20. SackDance99 — Saw them today on NFL Replay — Ginn was wide open and had to wait for the ball — Chad didn’t throw one out pattern either — Ricky, Ricky, Ricky –

  21. Watch out, Johnny!

Jetchick may be lurking; and you know how she gets about Chad – hahaha!

  22. Sure, I’m a big boy Bassett, but the site of any Dolphins jersey on TJB, let alone CP wearing one, makes me sick to my stomach.

That being said, I completely understand why CP went to the Dolphins and would never hold it against him. It was the Jets that didn’t want CP anymore; not the other way around. CP went to the team that showed the most interest and promised him a starting gig.

  23. Johnny….Johnny….Johnny

I would be interested to know just which members of our team you actually like? It will also be interesting to see how loyal you remain to them if they should have a bad game.

Even better….if Chad should by some miracle beat the Jets in the opener…well Johnny you left yourself with no way out. Then what are you going to say?

OK let me guess…humm lets see here…It will of course then be Coles fault because back in August he refused to speak to the press.

  24. Sweet! a johnny vs. jetchick clamation smackdown!

Gotta love it!…and you thought the Jet/Dolphin rivalry was BIG! (heh-heh)

  25. Bubby:

You put a big smile on my face.

I was considering asking Chris Mathews to put Johnny and I on his next addition of Hardball, and or as a warm up to the Obama- McCain debates.

    What do you think?

  26. Character and Loyalty? What a bunch of tools.

Where was the Jet’s loyalty? It’s a business, not a friendship club. Players are cut and traded all the time, it’s part of the game.

Anyway you look at it, the Dolphins are better off than the Jets, Favre will through more interceptions, and return to his whiny ways, and will probably retire after 6 loses in a row!

  27. Travis,

Your positive and enlightened approach to our team is rather remarkable.

  28. Oh yeah, Travis ! I’m witcha, big guy! I’m – a- feelin’ – it, brotha!! Your optimism moves me, man!

    ;-)

perhaps you can be an evangelist for the Jets FO, like Nikolas is….

  29. Chad is as classy as you can get… a little late on teh discussion, but look at johnny damon, and mark bellhorn, win a series for the sox, over the yanks, then go to NY sports is different now, i wish chad all the best, except for 2 sundays a year:)
