Link: Callahan ‘Loves’ What He’s Doing

Erik Boland of Newsday has a great feature on Jets Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan. In the article you get a sense of how detailed he really is.

“The first thing that comes to mind is smart and detailed,” Ferguson said after June’s minicamp. “He has information for us every day. It’s kind of impressive, stuff that makes you go ‘Wow.’ He knows exactly what he wants to convey to you and he does a good job of conveying that message.”

Faneca, part of some of the best offensive lines in the NFL in Pittsburgh, said Callahan has even brought new information to him. “He does a great job of not only coaching the big picture, but the little things,” Faneca said. “Sometimes, even a guy like myself, an 11-year vet, may not have thought about in a while and may not have been doing — a hand placement or a foot placement. He’s very wise in the game.”

Although the running numbers don’t reflect it so far the pass protection has been better than anything we saw last year.  The addition of Callahan has indeed been a welcome change for this team.  When I talked with Pete Kendall back at Matt Ryan’s Pro Day this past spring, one of the things that Kendall kept addressing was using (specifically, but could be generalized) a player like D’Brickashaw in a manner that works for that player, and communicating effectively to that player what they wanted him to do.  From what I’m reading here in Boland’s article, it seems that the translation is finally being made.

I know Cornhusker fans hate him but this guy knows how to coach the O-line. His addition is just as important as Fanaca and Woody…… By the way the Westhoff story has gotten some legs. Nice to hear it 1st from TJB. Looks like the Bobby Oshea will be taking a backseat…….Maybe he can go back to coaching Icebox and Spike.

our line does look alot better…especially in pass blocking…our run blocking needs alittle more improvement but altogether im happy with it so far…just my thoughts…

The jets look terrible running the ball so far, so I wouldnt start the praise just yet

    Mike G,

I agree, he better do something to get the run game straightened out. We can’t be a one dimensional offense.

The running game looks terrible. But I finally saw the first half of the Jets vs Jints game (thank you NFL network) and I could see no obvious missed blocks. I wonder if Thomas Jones is just too slow getting to the hole. It might explain why some teams let him go.

TJ will be fine during regular season with 15-25 runs/game.

Don’t read too much into the pre-season, because it is just the pre-season which is just an extended practice.

Don’t knock TJ until at least one game in to the season.

Take deep breaths and remember it is just the preseason.

I’ve gotta echo some of those previous sentences. The Jets have done nothing on the ground so far this pre-season. The pass blocking was great though.

Now if they could just eliminate those mental errors. How many penalities did they have this weekend???
