D. Rose is Rambling: Calvin Pace is Good With His Hands!

Saturday night was a great game for Calvin Pace. He had 2 sacks and many tackles. Watching the sacks it’s was clear that what makes Pace so effective is how he uses his hands. If you look closely at the sacks you see that Pace gets good separation between himself and the offensive line. This is called “The Punch.” Pace uses a lot of force to push the lineman back and that allows him to get the leverage advantage. Once he has gotten the proper leverage on the defender he is then able to shed the block and attack the quarterback. This is textbook technique for a pass rusher.
Watching Vernon Gholston, the difference between them is startling. Gholston does not get the same separation that Pace does and therefore he is not able to get pressure on the quarterback. This is something that Gholston is going to have to work on throughout this year. This goes to show that while Pace doesn’t have the same physique as Gholston, technique will win out over brute force every time. You don’t have to take my word for it, check out the following quote from Cardinals defensive end Chike Okeafor on his beating Raiders right offensive tackle Gallery twice in a preseason game:
“He’s definitely a strong guy. It was just moves I made. If you get the proper technique and the right hands, it doesn’t matter how strong you are.”
I know it’s just been two preseason games, but it looks like Pace will be a major addition to the defense.

The Jets front 7 look so much better than in recent years. The Giants had first and goal and walked away with nothing.
-
Didn’t Chris Samuels talk about how powerful Ghoulston was? Imagine if he gets some technique too.
Also it was the 3rd game, not 2nd

we all know vernon has the speed , strength , size , and the motor but all he needs is technique which will take time for him to learn but if he asks questions and watches tapes of i dont know maybe shawn merriman he will get better and maybe be the jets version of LT -
Hi Basset
should we be worried about Gholston?
i know he’s a rookie and all but the Jets must have known about his weak technique when they drafted him.
i wonder, when they checked him on pro-days what really impressed them, his size/speed or potential? -
Hey I wonder if Gary Myers still thinks Matt Leinart should be the Jets QB?
-
Have there been any Ty Law sightings in Hofstra yet?
-
Pace did look good and was in on most tackles. Gholsten still looks lost, but he’s going to be used situationally. If they use him the right way, he can be productive and gain more technique over time.
I don’t think LT or Merriman stature, but I do think this guy will hit some quarterbacks this year. -
The defense looked very solid against the giants. I still would like to see them not give up any big runs though.
-
Big runs, big passes are going to happen. It’s how the team responds AFTER the big play that counts. The D tightened up and played tough, didn’t get down or let it continue as of old. This is a well-coached unit and I don’t worry about Gholston, he too will be coached. He’s the future and Pace is the present. The Jets will be well-served for this forethought. Lowery is another example, although he might start sooner than Gholston! The Jets look better and better in the future.
-
Gholston is in the best possible situation for himself. I.e., he is allowed to learn and the pressure to produce big-time right away isn’t there.
Otherwise, if forced to start, I think he’d struggle big-time and people would start dropping the “b word” on him already, whereas even someone a little skeptical of Gholston like myself can acknowledge he might develop if handled properly.

I think VG is exactly where everyone associated with the team expected him to be. It’s not like the FO was raving about him as a savior. He was not the FO’s first choice at he pick, however, the way the draft shook out, his potential made the most sense at that spot. Everyone knew he was a physical monster with a lot to learn. I guarantee that no one associated with the team is particularly disappointed, never mind even considering the word “bus.t” Because knowledgeable football people would not have had outsized expectations for him. He’s simply an expensive project with a lot of upside. I will say that, even with his technical shortcomings, he’s a better rusher than B. Thomas. He was very close to a sack on three plays, splitting a double team with pure speed and strength on one.
Calvin Pace has had a lot more time playing standing up, has clearly taken coaching and put it to excellent use. He not only uses his hands well to get leverage on blockers, but to wrap up the QB, as well. I like how he mentioned that he wanted to make sure he didn’t miss once he got there. You often see rushers get to the passer only to let him wiggle away. Not Pace. This is looking like a great signing by the FO to me.

This is retarted if you guys are comparing a 6 year season vet to a rookie player who has only played in 3 preseason games. That to me is just ignorant.
People arent talking into consideration that he played DE in college, not OLB. That is a big difference.
At least wait until the season starts before everyone annoints him as a bust. He hasnt even played 1 game yet that matters. Give me a break.
-
Don’t forget, some people didn’t want Pace here because he had “only one good year” and before that one good year he was also considered a bust. So a year or more us sometimes needed. Having a veteran that is just coming into his own will do nothing but help Gholston.
-
Najy, while the guy clearly needs much, much more time to be labeled a “bust”, its incredibly annoying that you call people “retards” for speculating on a blog.
Its supposed to be fun to speculate on things, even when you are doing so way, way too early. Cut the crap.
-
DSmizzle,
I guess you have a problem reading. I didnt call anyone retarted. I said “THIS IS RETARTED”…
You really need to read and get your facts straight before you call anyone out on saying anyting.. Thats really annoying that i have to defend myself because i said something is retarted. I didnt say anyone is retarted. There is a big difference buddy.
-
Okay, so we are being retarded and aren’t generally retarded? Thanks for clarifying. Huuuuge difference.
-
DSmizzle,
What, are you the official spokesman of this blog??
I didnt call anyone anything. Are you insecure about yourself? I am sorry if you took it that i called you retared. No need to cry about it.
-
I’m not crying about it, I’m commenting about something I’ve found annoying about the reaction a lot of posters here have to someone making an observation of Gholston or expressing concerns about him at this very early stage.
Yes, I realize that it is waaaay too early to make a truly reasonable judgment about whether Gholston is a bust. Thats kinda why everything I say about my concerns with him has a caveat thrown in there, like, for example “I know its unfair to judge someone or label them this early, BUT I’m worried about him b/c….”.
Although the word “retard” is generally offensive, thats not my point. I’ll let the PC Police deal with that one.
The point is that this is a blog and if we think someone looks like a potential bust, what is the point of not saying it? If I were talking to my friends in a bar, I’d tell ‘em I was worried about the bust potential of Gholston without having to worry about people fiercely defending him b/c he hasn’t had nearly , even if they disagree!
-
And Najy, I’m not upset about your comments, and didn’t take anything personally. I just disagree about the wall of protection he is getting on this blog when someone makes a simple observation!
-
But then we are just being hypocrite because we continue to bash journalist and writters who bash the Jets without any reason.
There was a post that was on this blog saying how Brett Favre is “deteriorated”… Where does that come from? The guy hasnt played a regular season game yet and people are passing judgement on Brett Favre. Sure, the journalist is entiled to his opinion, but he will get bashed by Jets fans because we dont want to hear that Brett Favre skills are gone. Especially the the journalist isnt basing his opnion on anything.
Its the same thing saying that we should be worried about VG… Why? because he played in 3 insignificant preseason games and didnt do anything spectacular? He let up a couple plays but it happens.
Maybe its because he is still a rookie. Maybe its cuz he played a DE in college. Who knows. Its too early to second guess anything about him because it is still preseason.
I understand your concern but i will defend my thoughts about VG. There is no need to be concerned yet. If this was the bye week and he still in the same situation, then it would be plausible to speculate about his abilities.
We have to think positive until proven otherwise.
-
Actually, not the bye week because ours comes early this year. If this was mid point of the season, then we can be concerend about him.
-
Honestly, I don’t see why we can’t just have the conversation (including you defending your position like you did right here) without getting all defensive, or offensive about it.
I was saying this before the draft about Gholston. All of a sudden he becomes a JET and I have to be all deferential to the guy? I’m not saying he is a bad person, I’m commenting about what my very early impressions are of a professional athlete!
Thats all I is sayin’.
-
By the way, if the guy — this year or in the coming years — proves my INITIAL IMPRESSIONS wrong, I will say “I’m so happy he proved my concerns ill-founded”!!
-
I think as Jets fans, we should look at the glass half full instead of half empty. Thats just me tho. I think we should be as optimistic as possible and show support.
What happens if you are correct and he is a bust? What happens to the team then?
We are screwed! Thats what happens.
-
Okay, we’ve also had this side-debate before and nothing was accomplished.
Some people believe in optimism to the point (in my opinion) of being biased and losing objectivity.
On the other hand, I believe in analyzing and commenting about Gholston as if he were drafted by the Rams and I am watching him practice for them, doing the exact same thing.
-
Sure, i would say I am a little biased because I really wnat him to succeed. I want him to turn out to be like a shawn Merriman. Who doesnt??
Ofcorse, if there are facts in front of me that show me otherwise, then I will not argue anymore.
I guess it depends on what your expectations where for him for this year. That is the bench mark. I didnt expect too much. 5 or 6 sacks will suffice in my opinion for a rookie playing out of position.
-
Then again, numbers might not tell the whole story. There were a couple of plays against the Giants where he generted good pressure and almost got a sack but those go unnoticed because he didnt get the sack and they wont show up on the stat sheets.
-
I think Vernon Ghoston is highly overrateed. And your all retarted, not just for having this silly conversation, but for being who you are

i predict this guy to get 10 sacks and thomas should get 7 sacks and gholston will also get about 7 sacks , and its all gonna be thanks to Big Jenks , thats right he wont get much sacks but he will get alot of that credit , with all this pressure this must mean rhodes has to get atleast 7 Int’s
