Justin Miller Sidelined 1-3 Weeks

For a few years we’ve been wondering when Justin Miller would start playing to his potential.  This year was supposed to be (at least in my mind) the year of Justin Miller’s big debut party, but it looks like those party plans will have to be put on hold a little.

Jets starting right cornerback Justin Miller suffered a dislocated toe on his left foot and is expected to be sidelined one to three weeks, meaning he could miss the opener at Miami on Sept. 7, according to someone with knowledge of the injury.

That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t released any official information on the extend of Miller’s injury.

Miller, who missed most of last season with a knee injury and was having a solid camp, was hurt in the second quarter while making a tackle on Giants running back Brandon Jacobs (6-foot-4, 264 pounds) late in the second quarter of the Jets’ 10-7 victory at Giants Stadium. He limped off the field and was carted into the locker room. He didn’t return.

Miller is an athletic wonder, but his ability to stay healthy and put together what he’s learned onto the playing field have plagued him over the course of his career with the Jets

The article goes on to note that this might be Dwight “Swipe” Lowery’s chance to become the starter for the season opener.  I do hope that this is the case, but hope that it’s not rushing him into the role.  With Barrett, Poteat and Coleman still on the team, there’s no reason to push the rookie in before he’s truly ready.

Mangini seems to be pretty demanding when it comes to his young secondary players and we’ve seen some guys languish on the bench after big mistakes — Drew Coleman vs. the Bears in ‘06 and Eric Smith vs. the Eagles in ‘07 come to mind.  If Mangini really wants Lowery to play, he should let Lowery play through some his mistakes, and he’s gonna have them … he’s a rookie.  There’s no need to rush Lowery into the game only to then yank him when something goes wrong.

  1. I’m wondering if Miller should even make the team. We seem to have good depth with the DB’s, and it wouild be a shame to cut someone who could help the team while keeping Miller who can’t seem to stay healthy.

  2. Bassett,

I think with coleman and smith in those games mangini was giving those guys a chance to show him something rather than saying this is the guy. I think lowery is already better than miller.

  3. Miller can’t cover for crap. He is always hurt and is only good on kickoffs, but we already have Leon for that. After this year I do not see the Jets resigning him at all.

  4. Yeah, I don’t see miller getting signed either. Which i think is the right move.

  5. clemson alums (chansi, justin) seem to be from fragile stock

  6. OK first off all unless miller does freaking awesome on the return game he is out of the team

I dont think we should rush lowery into the starting job we should let poteat have the job and put lowery after the bye week

lowery can be something special , I really believe it , well i think we all believe it

  7. I was hoping they would be able to deal miller early in the season for something. anything. probably not going to happen now.

  8. A dislocated toe? On his left foot? How the heck did such vital secrets as these leak out?! Quick ! Someone put a lockdown on Hofstra and get to the bottom of this!

Somehow, i think Belicheat is behind it….

    :-)

  9. All that talk, hype in training camp, preseason, not only did he reinjure himself, he didnt show any promise before the injury.. way to go Miller

  10. Has anyone ever seen Miller break on the ball and make a play since he has been with us? The answer is no. He either gets beat both (deep/front of him) or gets called for a penalty. Lowery already has made more plays than Miller or Barrett has in 2 years this preseason. START LOWERY!!!……..Plus whats in the water at Clemson? Those tigers are always hurt

  11. As much as I hate to say it, the Jets need to keep an eye on Ty Law. If anything, drive the price up for the Pats.

  12. Law would be an excellent addition, but there is no way we could fit him under the cap….

  13. nick
we can tryu by gettign rid of barrett , who knows man lay would be a great fit to the D and he could teach lowery and revis some good stuff while he is here

  14. I understand why everyone is saying Justin has been a major disappointment but I always saw the potential in him. He’s known for being athletic but hes strong for a guy his size. I wouldn’t want to cut him this year as people suggested but if he does I’ll root for him.

  15. also strong i meant to say

  16. Basset…

How come my posts don’t show up

  17. Never mind!

  18. Is justin going to ever be deion sanders? no. hell, at this point, i’m just hoping he turns out to be another ray mickens.

but the idea of cutting one of the players that will provide depth at one of our weakest positions is just dumb. just because he’s not starting material doesn’t mean he has no value.
