Will Shawne Merriman Be Playing Week 3 Against the Jets?
Shawne Merriman is one of the Chargers best players on an already loaded team. With Shawne Merriman’s recent news that he might need some season ending surgery and Antonio Gates coming off surgery, could the Jets be catching the Chargers at an opportune time early in the season? Merriman says he wants to play, but doctors seem to be advising against it, as Merriman is now working on his third opinion … admirable, but maybe unrealistic.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache, an orthopedic surgeon and director of sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, said that if Merriman were 30 and had played longer in the NFL, these injuries could be career-threatening.
…
“He’s going to have a tricky, very loose knee,” said ElAttrache, who consults for multiple NFL teams. “Whenever he runs and cuts and plants he’s going to have trouble. . . . He’ll figure this out pretty quick.”
With the Patriots Week 2, then the Chargers in Week 3, I’m looking forward to seeing what this Jets team is really made of early in the season.

all these high-profile injuries, whether transpiring during preseason games or not, seem to be providing momentum for a swap to more regular season games, which would thankfully extend the season.
i’d like to add dump one preseason contest, perhaps add a bye week before regular season, add another bye during the season, and then add 2 more regular season games.
this way, that painful offseason wait will be about a month less.
Perhaps Mr. Merriman should just inject some more steroids into his knee. That’ll help him heal faster.
Brandon, I know you were joking but that’s actually a good idea. I think Steriods which were originally designed for treating injuries and sicknesses should be allowed under STRICT NFL supervision OUTSIDE of the season to treat and heal injuries. On a limited medicinal use it wouldnt give players an edge over competition but let them get back to a normal state of health in which they can compete again. If people are allowed to use them after surgeries then why cant players?
J-Mill appears to be fragile again:

Reciprocity,
It’s more likely that his use of steroids contributed to the deterioration of his knee. Yes, steroids can make you stronger and reduce recovery time, but by increasing muscle mass and tension it puts more stress of the tendons and ligaments which do not receive the same types of benefits. As for Merriman’s injury, he has tears in both ligaments that provide lateral stability to the knee and he had his meniscus repaired in the offseason. As far as I know, steroids do not repair ligament tears. Due to the laxity he’s going to experience, he will be lucky if his ACL holds up and even luckier if he doesn’t suffer any further damage to his meniscus. As a football fan, I hope he decides not to play this year because if he stupidly does not have surgery and does further damage to his knee chances are we will never see him play at the tremendous level he has over the past 3 years.
Kharma is a b1tch! Not wishing bad on Merriman, but I cant stand his ridiculous dance and do not sympathize with cheaters.
i said this before all this came up ”the jet would win one of those games againts the chargers or the patriots”
The end of the 2009 season is Merriman’s walk date. The management at the Chargers is none too happy about Merriman’s off-the-field distractions and more than one local SD reporter is predicting that he will be gone by the start of the 2010 season. If this is so, then he’ll want to be very careful not to play injured and risk further damage.
Logically, he’ll want to have a blistering walk year to drive up free agent prices (depending on whether they franchise him or not) for his next contract. With the NFLPA contract expiring and nothing in place for 2010, that’ll be a bonanza for a lot of high-profile players lucky enough to become FAs that year.
If he plays hurt for part of 2008 and then has season-ending surgery in December he jeopardizes his walk year. That would be stupid and nobody has characterized him or his agent as stupid.
Logic would dictate that we do not face Merriman in game 3. Gates, meanwhile is off the PUP list and is practicing at full speed.
Bassett,
You won’t have to wait until weeks two or three. If we lose to the Fish, or, IMHO, if we don’t dominate a team with a new FO, (third in how many years?), that has myriad turnover at key positions, that has added no veteran of note other than a guy who couldn’t win the QB position here, whereas our FO and many key players are in their third year, with key additions on both sides of the ball, and with what our FO determined to be an upgrade over the Fish’ QB, then all weeks two or three will be is confirmation.
No excuses.
h
It doesn’t matter, if a few key players are out or play hurt. If the Jets take the Chargers lightly, they will get their butts whooped. Every game, including the Dolphin game, will be a tough fight to the end, for us. We are two weeks from the regular season and the players don’t know the formations. The wideouts were talking to each other, like they had never practiced together before. D’Brick looked lost out there. He didn’t know who his assignment was. For us to not play the starters in the Philly game is a mistake. They need to be on the same page in Miami. It was ugly. What do you think?
oh wow i think we might just go 3-1 , who knows maybe 4-0
but i feel bad for merriman, not because of his injury but his stupidity , he is risking a career threatening injury whta a moron just sit out this season and play your heart out the next season on your contract year and even if you dont get signed by the chargers im pretty sure every 3-4 team will be eying you
This is what happens when you take the juice and not the much more effective HGH. If he was on the HGH he would never have gotten caught and no injuries…. “Lights Out” is an amateur. Grow up and get the big boy stuff!!
The Jets-Giants game revealed the expected. Talented defense, but with a suspect run defense and a talented offense, but with miscommunication in every position and a hard to find running game; in other words, plenty of potential but hardly a TEAM.
Given that they need time to work things out, I do not see how a loss to the Dolphins can be a precursor of things to come. Actually the way things have turned out with the injuries in SD and NE, I believe that the hardest game will be the Dolphins game, which, by the way, I am convinced that Chad will win.
Adding a 17th game is a really bad idea. Why is it that every time there is a rash of injuries in the preseason people call for a 17th game? That makes no sence. Guy’s barely play in preseason…It will cause even more injuries!
Harvilis, Up here, in VT, the game was not on. So reading the reports, I was very discouraged. Then I saw the game. Most of the penalties were in the second half. Most of those guys, hopefully won’t get much PT.
The penalty on the TD was a second string WR not stepping up to cover the LT. Why the media cannot report it correctly is discouraging. If Franks had stepped back as he did, then stepped twice to the right to expose what the defensive responsibilities were, as he did, and then stepped back up to the line, he could have been called for illegal motion. Yet all the reports lay it on Franks. The WR is supposed to step up to cover the WR when the TE steps back. Case and point.
I agree with you that given that Coles and Favre have not had time together, it is imperative that the O take the field in the Eagles game. This is one matchup that needs more work as does Favre to Keller and we need to learn if TJ is too slow off the ball or just needs more work.
Not the D though. They look ready.
If Tangini don’t put the O on the field against the Iggles, I don’t want to hear about growing pains. That excuse won’t fly. They have the chance to work the kinks out, especially if Coles is not ready to go full tilt boogie against the Iggles and Smith is going to open the season as a starter.
Nikolas, what do you want from your first team D against the super bowl winners. Even with an interception giving them the ball on the 30, we shut them out. The big runs were against Gholston who is still learning to play his position. Even if we gave up 3 points cause the regular kicker wouldn’t miss, I think one has to be ecstatic with the gains made with Jenkins and Pace. Soon, Gholston will sit BLT’s butt where it belongs (on a bench). Lowery may take a starters job and fix our CBs. The only huge hole on D is at safety opposite Kerry.
That said, you may be the only person besides me worried about the Fish.
But as per my post above, there is enough time and we have had an extra two years and a choice of QBs. So if we don’t win handily, I am thinking it is time for a new FO. Because at this point, the CS have had the time and talent they need to mold a team able to handily beat the Fish.
Harlan
LLan, I think Pettite said he was using something for his elbow and a ligament is a muscle like a tendon but I believe one connects bone to muscle and one connects muscle to muscle. I’m not a doctor and I dont advocate cheating but HGH or something else IF it could help the players heal faster OR help them play longer OR improve thier quality of life after football is something the League should realy be looking into.
I love that such a high profile player like Merriman has suffered an injury. Not because I am cruel and want him to suffer, but because in chronilogical order this is what happened
2007, SPECTACULAR YEAR! the NEW LT
2008, Caught using steriods, suspended by NFL
2009, 2 TORN LIGAMENTS IN KNEE
What a great way to send a message to the youth of america.
Would you sacrifice your life, for your career?
Reprocity, very illadvised comment by you over there, steriods are illegal for a reason.
And its not because it helps you heal faster, or makes you stronger…
Everything that can come good out of steriods is short term, long term effects are far greater than what it helps now
Steriods not only has a bad effect on your bones, muscles, but also has mental repercussions.
It’s kind of like herion,
herion can be used to help ease pain but it is used in other forms (oxycotin)
So, should herion be legal?
Harlan,
If you go back and watch D’Brickshaw, he was lost on a number of plays. As a result, their defense was in Favre’s face a number of times. The starters have to play, at least a quarter, to get things together. I wouldn’t care what the Eagles do. That’s why they have these games, so that the teams can get things together, going into regular season. If we were returning the same team from last year, it wouldn’t be neccessary but, these guys need work. Favre is asking for some more playing time! Give it to him! Mangini can be a stubborn SOB. We have the pieces to the puzzle. If we go into Miami, and we don’t squish the fish, it is Mangini’s fault.
Harlan, you probably know that it comes down to a conversation between Mangini and Reid about who plays and for how long. Reid doesn’t usually play the ones, so Mangini would have to inform him that he intends to. We’ll see how that works out.
All things NY, Herion legal? Yes for Medicinal reasons only! It’s not ill advised… I purposefully capitolised the word “IF” and claimed I’m not a doctor. With the info you presented then that “IF” is no longer valid and I agree with you.
The Cardinals game the following week will say more about this season than the MNF game –
I think the Jets will put up 40 points on the Dolphins and hold them to 10 or fewer. I just hope that doesn’t translate into overconfidence against the Pats. If they at least keep the NE game close and continue to improve, they have a legitimate chance in SD – particularly with no Gates or Merriman – and sneak off to a 2-1 start.
I dont know how the hell some of you are worried about the dolphins. We put up 40 on them last time, and we’ve beaten them 15 out of the last 20??? (does anyone know the actual number?)
Our team is far superior to the dolphins, and they are the least of my worries. How bout a win week 2 against the Pats?
I’m with Mike on this. I cant name one starter other than Crowder, chowder or something like that. They have NO D and Bretts going to eat them alive while we know what Penny will do…ZZzzz
