Bob Sutton: Soft in the Two Minute Drill

I am not a big fan of Bob Sutton. I think our defense has not been playing up to par in his tenure and the defense has started out slowly the last several seasons. However, the point of my writing here is to talk about how soft our defense plays in the two minute drill and the negative impact it has on our team.

The most recent example of this is the end of the first half of the Giants game. Our defense played the last two minutes of the first half very poorly. As usual the defense was only rushing three, not pressuring the quarterback and as a result the Giants marched down the field and came within a Calvin Pace sack of scoring a TD. This no pressure dropping 8 defensive philosophy has been irritating me for the last several years. When will Sutton learn that giving the quarterback all day to throw is a sure-fire way to blow a game?

Please Bob, don’t play the prevent anymore!

i agree completely…i hate when we do that…especially against NE…they always seem to score before halftime…time to be ultra agressive during the 2 mintue drill…just my thoughts…

  2. I hope if sutton does it not get it together early mangini will take over the play calling.

  3. They don’t play the prevent very often, usually what we see is is the “allow”, or in extreme cases the “enable” or the “facilitate”.

Teams with no talent have to resort to bend-but-not-break (or, in the case of last year’s Jets, bend-and-then-break), but teams with talent just stop the other team. Do the Jets have the talent? We are only about 17 days away from finding out.

  4. yea are right D rose he needs to go unless our D finishes top 10 he has to be gone i dont like him , we need a real coach maybe brian can ask daddy to coach our D for 1 season and see how that goes , who knows maybe it might work

  5. I almost want our defense to be overly agressive with two minutes remaining so that if the other team ends up scoring quickly on a big play, we can then get our offense back on the field for our own 1 or 2 minute drill and hopefully even things back up without much time remaining.

  6. I don’t know if I totally agree. Those eight sacks tell me something (schemes) is starting to work and may become contagious. I believe the D bought into it and the chemistry is cooking. I have a real good feeling about thid D. Similar feeling to the Giants last year. Lets give it some more time before we judge it. I think Sutton might be on the right track.

  7. PS………….and without VG….yet.

  8. great point DanF

  9. Why show your blitx packages during pre season? Lets see how Sutton does this year with a true NT

  10. It’s not just this year, this has been the case for several years.

  11. The problem they’ve faced since abraham was dealt is that they’ve had ZERO pass rush. Now, with pace, ellis (hopefully), VG (maybe?) and the other upgrades on the d-line hopefully they can generate some pressure. Dont want to jinx it but Pace looks like the real deal and something we’ve been lacking for years. Keep your fingers crossed everybody.

No doubt Faz. But a good run D that dosent leave your D facing 3rd and two would help as well

  13. Bob Sutton has showed that he’s not the type of defensive coordinator that likes to blitz as often as we would like him to. Pressure is a sure way to mess with a QB’s timing. If no one believes me, just ask Tom “Pretty Boy” Brady. We need someone that loves to blitz like crazy. We need Calvin Pace to blitz on almost every down. He has the speed. That is why we brought him here to play OLB is it not? Thomas has to step up his game and if he doesn’t then we will have a big problem because as far as I’ve heard, Gholston hasn’t been doing well at all adjusting from DE to OLB. PRESSURE = GOOD DEFENSE!!!!!!!!

  14. The Jets haven’t been aggressive on D since Donnie Henderson, who was an excellent coordinator. They should’ve gone after Pepper Johnson(the DL coach for the Pats) this offseason, but I’m sure they will this offseason. So I say fire Sutton if the D doesn’t play well in weeks 1-3 and give Mangineus play calling.

  15. Even in 2004, the most successful year of the Donnie Henderson era, it was statistically proven that the Jets defense was no better than average. The only reason it was high up (4th in terms of yard allowed, I think?) was because the Jets offense had a high time of possession because they had a solid running game and milked the clock.

When the defense was worn down because of lower time of possession due to lots of 3 and outs and return TDs, it was exposed – see the playoff game against the Steelers.

That was the most talent laden defense the Jets have had in years too, which speaks to my earlier point about being more aggressive when you have more talent (although they still often relied on BBNB).

  16. I agree with Sutton not being the D Coordinator we need. He is definitely a weak link that I thought would have been addressed in the off season. Hope he learned to be aggressive from last year’s experience. We need pressure and more pressure on the QB in order to win.

  17. Both our coordinators suck. Mangini’s twiddling at the bye week improves the D and lets hope Callahan gets some say with Schott.

  18. Johnny says…Cut ‘em all!

  19. Now that we have the weapons, both coordinators will be exposed for how good they really are. I have a good feeling, on the D coming out of the gate strong. The O might show some signs but, Favre will need time to comprehend the full playbook.

  20. i think suttons doing a pretty good job.
its not as easy as it seems.
seriously, he hasnt had much to work with in the past.
and his work at army is pretty impressive.

lets jsut wait it out and see what happens this season.
i have a feeling he can turn it around for the better.
    lets hope!
