Chatman Roids Update: Not Roids After All
Cimini with a minor correction based upon a quote from Chatman’s agent, who seems like he would probably say “no, I don’t” if you suggested that he seems to deny everything:
Jesse never tested positive for a steroid or any other performance-enhancing drug. Near the end of last season the League claimed he had a diuretic in his system that they said could also be used as a masking agent. After spending great time and money defending his innocence, the League made its final ruling and now Jesse has no choice but to look ahead to week 5
I meant to make the point earlier that a substance abuse ban doesn’t always mean steroids (could be painkillers or something like that), but didn’t get a chance to with all that was going on (although, you will note that I deliberately didn’t mention steroids in my post). However, despite this (and a few other minor inaccuracies that, if anything, added to the intrigue today), this seems as good a time as any to commend Cimini and Hutch for their excellent and timely updates today (and thanks to any commentors that passed on links and news updates – you know who you are).
Update: The NY Post headline, currently says (in capital letters) “JESSE CHATMAN BUSTED FOR STEROIDS”. Ha ha. I won’t even bother to link to it, because they’ll probably remove it in a minute.
Further Update: Yep, they changed it to “Jesse Chatman suspended for substance and related-substances policy” (which doesn’t even really make sense). They still didn’t change the address of the link though, which still says “Chatman busted for steriods”.

your welcome tjb

cimini means week 6 we dont play in week 5

the agent didn’t exactly provide a good reason why he had this other stuff in his system. they don’t hand down multi-game suspensions lightly. in the NFL it’s guilty until proven innocent. I hope there’s a good reason, and i’ll reserve judgement.

a diuretic is someting that helps you go to the bathroom…..most common diuretics are diet soda or coffe.
-
John, I doubt he was suspended for drinking a 2 liter diet coke. the implication of the comment is that he was trying to flush something out of his system or cover it up so it wouldn’t be detected.
-
could be ,although i think urine testing is very controversal…..the nfl is a trillion dollor corperation you would think they could afford something more high tech than a 15 dollor test

He will be back, fresh & in race for the starting spot vs Leon Washington.
I have a feeling we are going to sling it out this year, just the way New England did last year. With 7 WR on the roster we WILL throw, you can bet that. Also, with the Flexible Schedule being a big payday if you are good and spectacular this makes even more sense.
-
Also I do not care what Cimini says, we will trade Kellen Clemens. Ratliff and Ainge stay because they are playing for minimums and if Favre plays 2 or 3 years Clemens will be due for a contract. What do you give him then? Pay him for what? Fifth or sixth year QB with hand full of starts – now that is what I call mortgaging your future.
-
Four QBs does not make sense, especialy with Mr. 253 consecutive starts. We may try and trade KC but who would want the worst QB in football last year. Joey Harrington and Chris Simms are both available and better than KC. If we can’t get at least a 7th round pick just cut the guy already. Having Ratliff and Ainge as backups is very risky though. Still this is no reason to keep KC who had his chance and just didn’t cut it.

The Jets were probably going to give Thomas Jones 4 weeks to prove himself anyway so the suspension is not the end of the world.

I suspect the diuretic was responsible or at least contributed to the enormous weight loss Chatman has undergone.

Rudi Johnson? Anyone?

johnl: What? the urine test is the most commonly used doping test and is very accurate since most drugs gets cleared throguh the kidneys. True some doping tests require blood, but at the moment i can’t think of anyone other than the on the contrary very controversiel EPO test which only helps in endurance sports, and football, despite taking 3-4 hours to complete a game, is not an endurance sport.
Harlan: I agree, it might have contributed to the weight loss, but i doubt that was the reason he took it. Loosing his water weight would mean also being dehydrated on gameday. There is a reason these seemingly non-performance enhancing drugs are on the no-no list -
Harlan, I could buy that with Chatman once weighing 280+ lbs. that the diuretic was used for weight loss and not to mask steroid use. However, Mangini said that the rules were clear, so maybe he did it knowingly, figuring that it was his only choice to get back in the game after being out of football for a whole year. I’m not sure when he tested positive, but it must have been quite a while back if he went through a legal process to fight the charges. Either way, it says a lot that the Jets just didn’t cut him considering their strictness on character issues.

and by the way, gone is our moral superiority towards for instance the chargers and the patsies

rasmusbach, there is no proof that Chatman used steroids, only that proof of a diuretic was found. I wouldn’t want to jump to any conclusions because Mangini himself said that Chatman has great character. If the Jets suspected that he had used steroids when he was under investigation by the NFL, I don’t think they would have signed him. They check out every player.

well either way he is getting suspended , shame this is really good ad when TJ is avg. 1 yard per carry we could have used him a bit , i wonder who we gonna get from free agency to fill his spot while he is gone , i hope not cedric benson , but maybe we can et back musa smith
