(Conflicting) News: The First Cuts are the Deepest

According to Hutch, the Jets made six cuts last night, including a few surprise moves:

In a stunning move, the Jets released veteran RB Jesse Chatman, who rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on Thursday night against the Eagles and led the team in rushing this preseason with 164 yards and a touchdown on 51 carries, according to someone with knowledge of the cuts. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the cuts aren’t officially announced until Saturday.

According to several other people with knowledge of the team’s moves, also released were veteran LB Matt Chatham, CB Hank Poteat, TE A.J. Schable, NT Thomas Johnson and FB Jehuu Caulcrick.

However, according to Cimini the Chatman news is inaccurate and they’re actually looking to trade him.

He was not released, according to his agent, Brett Tessler. However, that doesn’t mean Chatman will be a Jet. Turns out they were showcasing him in Thursday night’s pre-season finale, because I’m hearing he probably will be traded. Not sure about the destination or the compensation, but it could be the Ravens, where he would be reunited with his longtime offensive coordinator, Cam Cameron. The Jets will have an announcement Saturday on Chatman, who rushed for 96 yards against the Eagles.

93 actually, Rich, but nobody’s perfect.

Hutch’s report also says that Coach Westhoff is on the verge of coming back, but with the uncertainty over the Chatman situation, I guess we have to take this (and the details of the other cuts) with a pinch of salt until we get the official word.

  1. IT would be great if Hutch was wrong. About Chatham. I hope the others are cut.

OTOH, although I would fear not having a reliable back up to TJ (in whom I have serious doubts) and Leon, I think extra picks in next year’s drafts in the 4th round or better might be instrumental, especially in light of the Favre trade where we likely lose at a two or a three.

If Ratliff ain’t the guy (and it would be a Brady like surprise if he was) then we need to get a top QB. Extra picks next year will be more important than a back up.

  2. Rumor that Clemens has been traded to vikings.

  3. Where did you hear the rumor, That would be awesome, KC contract is up at the end of the year if i am not mistaken. Anything we could get for him would be great.

  4. 1050 espn radio. It would make a lot of sense. He was clearly, in my opinion, beaten out for #2 by Ratliff, they get a pick or picks for him and they get to keep Ainge. Seems like a win-win. Let’s hope it is true.

  5. Here is link that agent refutes both cut and trade:

  6. Harlan…was that sarcasm or did you get Chatham (LB) and Chatman (RB) mixed up? I thought you wanted Chatham (LB) out?

  7. why is poteat gone

  8. That would be pretty stupid trading Jesse Chatman, did they not see how he performed? Or were we all just witnessing one of TV’s illusions? I think not.

  9. I thought he looked good too, but overall is 3.2 yards per carry that impressive against a bunch of second and third stringers?

If the Jets can get value for their number three RB (which they didn’t use AT ALL last year), then it might not be a bad move to pull the trigger. (Although, it doesn’t seem certain that it will even happen).
