You Too, “Shushy”
After the jump, my analysis of the rest of the cuts. A hearty congratulations (but don’t get too comfortable) to the likes of Murrell, Cummings, Ainge, Clowney, DeVito, Brown and anyone else under the gun!
Sent Bracking:
Larry Brackins was only signed when the Jets lost David Clowney to injury after the Redskins game, so was always the longest of long-shots to make the team. The Jets might see some potential in him, especially given his excellent size, so he could be a decent bet for the practice squad.
How Rude:
Rudy Burgess is another guy who was never really in the mix for a roster spot. However, with his athleticism and versatility (he has played WR, CB and returned kicks in his college career), perhaps Burgess will be one of the guys the Jets invite back for the practice squad. I can’t shake this feeling that he would be great in Canada, though.
Stan Doesn’t Deliver:
Stanley Daniels was an undrafted free agent who spent last year in camp with the Rams. Despite the Jets apparent lack of line depth, he was unable to earn a roster spot, although he has good enough size, that someone might still see potential in him. Obscure fact: Daniels is terrified of spiders according to his wikipedia page.
DeVan Intervention:
Kyle DeVan was added to the mix halfway through camp this year and was unable to catch-up with the rest of the backups. He’s only a rookie and slightly raw technically, so may have been picked up with a view to being a long-term project anyway.
The Bridges of Mattison Cut Me:
Bryan Mattison was another young guy put into the mix for playing time on the defensive line. However, he probably needs to add weight to be effective at DE in a 3-4 defense. He could be a practice squad candidate.
Who Cut the Chez?:
Matt McChesney has had an interesting journey. He saw some action at DT towards the end of the 2005 season for the Jets, before becoming a guard and heading over to “Europa”. After missing all of last year with an injury, McChesney was singled out for praise by Eric Mangini following mini-camp, but has now been cut. He may be too old to go onto the practice squad, so may need to rethink his life. Perhaps he could head over to the WWE like his namesake.
Blair Glitch Project:
Blair Phillips early career has been beset by injuries and indecisiveness over his true position (SS or ILB). He didn’t make much of an impact during the preseason and was not a surprising cut. However, the Jets kept him around this long, so maybe he will be back for another try next year.
Is That Funny Ha Ha…or Funny Pitoitua?:
Ropati Pitoitua is another defensive lineman that has shown flashes of potential at camp. His excellent size would seem to make him a good candidate as a developmental prospect, but there are several other young Jets that you could say the same thing about. He will probably be back in camp next year, but where?
Everybody Cuts Raymond:
Again, Paul Raymond was a victim of the numbers game. I wonder if he showed enough for the Jets to bring him back next year or whether the winning TD against the Giants last week and follow-up performance against the Eagles will be the pinnacle of his career. An Ivy-Leaguer, I doubt Paul will find it too hard to forge a career for himself in something other than pro sports.
Broken ‘Arted:
Brandon Renkart becomes the second former Rutgers player to be cut in the last few days, after Ron Girault was given the boot earlier in the week. Renkart did not make any tangible impression in preseason, but was added later than many of the other undrafted free agents, so the coaching staff will have to decide whether they have seen enough or want another look.
Jets Cut CB with Impossible-to-Make-Puns-With Name:
Finally, DB James Ihedigbo also found a red tag in his locker this afternoon. And it wasn’t put there for a joke by Roger Dorn. (Ten bonus points for anyone who knows what I am talking about). Play-by-play announcers around the league can breathe a sigh of relief. He had a big hit in the Eagles game, but the best he can hope for now is a spot on the taxi squad.

major leage roger dorn…..
I agreed with most of the cuts..but BOTH Caulcrick and Pociask ?? leaves us REAL THIN at blocking back/h-back/fullback…and with Chatman suspended, we should go after Rudi Johnson as our “big back” !!
woot, i got 10 bonus points!…
steve: Good point. Run ‘n’ Shoot anyone?
Maybe they both go on the PS, then Ainge or someone goes on IR after the season starts and then they add one to the active roster?
I guess Mangini knew Chatman’s urine test was negative the other night so instead of making him run laps, he ran him into the ground.
this suspension is from last year when he came up positve for a masking agent ….no steriods were found or anything else for that matter…the nfl just decided that the result of his urine was to ” iffy ” and they suspended him now since the results came up at the end of last season…the jets knew about it and mangini said he has a job waiting for him when he is done with his suspension……
how about “I had to go” Ihedigbo
Murrell has been awesome
Major League, Rick Vaughn received the red tag.
I’d say for the most part the Jets made all the right cuts. Chatman’s possible trade/cut was a bit “nerve-racking” but everything will work out fine I believe.
Rudi Johnson is hurt and old. We won’t go after him.
The Jets need to make one more cut. Cut KC and go after Chris Simms.
