Return of the Cane: Westhoff Back as ST “Guru”

by Bent on September 1st, 2008 at 8:02 pm

The Jets officially announced the return of Mike Westhoff to their coaching staff. He will call plays next season, having been medically cleared to return, which I’m sure we all agree is great news. Kevin O’Dea retains the title of special teams co-ordinator, while Westhoff has no official title. No word yet as to whether Mike will be on the sideline or in the booth. You may recall the Jets special teams underperformed when he was first forced to stay in the booth last year.

At his media conference call, Eric Mangini said that he expects the two to have a great working relationship, but (surprise, surprise) Rich Cimini is skeptical. O’Dea has apparently not been allowed to speak to the media, but who’s to say he wasn’t advised that this was a possibility when he accepted the job?

Cimini also notes that the Jets are evaluating whether to make a move for more than one player, including John Lynch.

O’Dea i guess hes the odd man out, but atleast he gets to learn from the genius , oh and i expect leon to match his TD from last yr in the return game and maybe make the playoffs

Is it me or is Cimini a “half-empty glass” guy? He’s never happy.

As much as I’m thrilled that Coach Westhoff will be once again on the sidelines, I’m even happier to hear that he’s now well enough to do so!

Ok, Ok Westhoff is good news, but lets get to the real deal: Jets Mini-Bowl. We have to beat Miami. No If’s, And’s or But’s.

Welcome back Mike. If O’Dea doesn’t like it, he can leave.

    yea good news…

ok guys…who would you guys play…deangalo williams against SD or leon against miami…leon always does good against miami but d.williams is gonna get more chances than leon…i would like your oppinions…

  11. avatar swizzle81 says:

i’d say go with Leon only if they reward you with special teams points as wel, as SD has an awesome run D, and the Panthers should be playing catch up all day.

deangelo….while you can.(before he gets hurt)and before the rookie kid takes over

I’m with swizz — if you get points for return TDs (we do in my league, plus a bonus for 50+ yards), then you have to go with Leon. If it’s rushing performance only, then Williams is obviously going to get more carries and more opportunities.

It’s not even close that you have to start D Williams.

First off, go with where you drafted your player. I’m sure DW went rounds before Leon.

Second go with history. Leon had a nice season last year but is not the workhorse on this team and his stats show it.

Third go with who is the starter. They will not just unseat DW in week one with a rookie especially if they are having success.

While it’s nice to get a return TD it is much more rare than rushing TD and constant positive yardage points.
