2008 Jets Team Captains Announced

This year’s team captains were announced

Defensive Captains: Shaun Ellis & Kerry Rhodes
Offensive Captains: Alan Faneca & Brett Favre
Special Teams Captains: Leon Washington & David Bowens

The Defensive captains were expected, and the special teams captains seem right.  Kerry has deserved this, and Ellis is the elder statesman.  Leon was the biggest contributor last year and Bowens is the best veteran backup linebacker, which is generally where the second captaincy has gone over the past three years (Chatham & Kassell).

But the offensive captains, though hard to argue with are a sign that this is a changed team.  Last year it was Chadwick and Laveranues, this year it’s two players who have yet to play a regular season game for the Jets.

Congrats to all, they’ll represent their players well.

  1. obviously, coles’ teammates did not appreciate his off and pre-season tantrums. that and the 7 wr roster do not bode well for his future beyond this year with the team.

  2. BIG sign that it’s not Coles –

  3. We all saw Cole’s time coming to an end. Maybe we can trade him by the deadline. I know we can’t replace the talent, but he is hurt anyway. Is it an 11 million cap hit?

  4. Suprised Cotchery was not a captain. He seems to have taken over as our best offesnive weapon and the team to really respects him. Can’t agrue with Favre and that animal Faneca though

  5. Updated yesterday figured i would throw them out there…just started posting on the site SouthJerseyJetFan….

  6. Favre and Faneca were brought in as Pro Bowl/Super Bowl players to help change the culture of the organization. This seems like a recognition of that. It’s a good sign that signals that Farve and Faneca are keeping up their end of the bargain in the eyes of the other players.

  7. Coles is a cancer! He is a loser and at the end of his career and I hate dolphins, babies and whales too!
I suspect Cotchery and Mangold too! let’s trade them all… before it is too late and we miss the bus to SB.
If we lose against Miami it will be because other players will sabotage Favre’s play and Mangini’s coaching.

  8. south jersey … thanks for joining in! I’ll post up the link to prisco’s rankings later.

JAGG … trading or cutting coles would be cap suicide … he’s on this team through at least the end of the year.

  9. What an idiot!!

  10. I’m sooooooo….glad Coles is quickly fading. For the life of meI could never understand why Mangini allowed this guy to ridicule with that nickname. But anyway that is a seperate issue. He NOT good for the teams chemistry regardless of what a few players say.

  11. I wouldn’t read too much into Coles not being named team captain. IMO, the QB should always be an offensive captain and Favre is a sure first-ballot HOF’er. And, Faneca is the key to the Jets’ OL and a perrenial Pro Bowler. Sure, Coles acted like a spoiled brat after Chad was released, but I have high hopes that Coles can be Greg Jennings (but better at running routes and over the middle) to J. Co’s Donald Driver.

  12. Considering Cole’s salary for the next 2 seasons is guaranteed. He isn’t going anywhere for 2 years. He’ll be fine it might take a few weeks to get in a repetition with Favre but he’ll be ready to contribute. On a the plus side he likely won’t be getting crushed over the middle anymore with high passes.

  13. I’m actually surprised Brandon Moore wasn’t on the list instead of Faneca. He has like the longest consecutive tenure on the Jet compared to the rest of the offensive starters.

I’m also not sure why people read into this that much. Captains don’t mean much in football.

  14. K. Rhodes is going to be the team MVP this year! Write it down now. He will be a major benefactor of all the new additions on defense. Now he can be freed up to attack the offense instead of reacting. I’m thinking 5-8 sacks and 4-6 ints for him.

  15. Thanks for the cap info. Thought it was suicide. just wishful thinking we could profit off of him.

in support of vbsiena’s point Randy Moss was a captain in Oakland and not in his first year with them.

  16. Captains are locker room leaders or proven leaders…In that sense thats why Favre and Faneca were named captains because of their locker room leadeship or field leadership…From what we have seen there is no reason Coles should be a captain this year.

  17. Coles will still be one of our offensive leaders even though he didnt play in the pre-season. He can still catch the long ball, his rookie year he ran a 4.31

  18. The 2008 Jets Season Predictions

The off-season is finally over…thank god. Here are my official predictions for the 2008 New York Jets in no particular order:

    1. The Jets will split with the New England Patriots this year.

    2. The Jets will finish second place in the AFC East.

    3. The Jets will be a wild-card team.

    4. Record? I have been bouncing back and forth between 10-6 and 11-5 in my head, but I am going 11-5.

    5. The Jets biggest upsets this year? They will beat San Diego on Monday Night and when they take one of two against the Patriots.

    6. The Jets biggest let downs this year? When they lose in Buffalo and Tennessee and at home to Denver.

    7. Brett Favre will thrown 24-28 touchdowns this year, with 13-15 interceptions.

    8. Jerricho Cotchery will be a pro-bowl player this year, hauling in 1300 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. Kerry Rhodes, Kris Jenkins, and Nick Mangold will join him in Hawaii.

    9. Vernon Gholston will have a fairly quiet rookie year, with Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas both having very good years at outside linebacker.

    10. Chris Baker will have more catches than Dustin Keller, but Keller will have more touchdowns and yards.

    11. Thomas Jones will run for 1200 yards and 6 touchdowns.

    12. Leon Washington will be a bigger factor on offense this year.

    13. Brad Smith will put together a solid season and hold off Chansi Stuckey as the number three receiver.

    14. The Jets sack leader will be Calvin Pace…with 12. David Harris and Bryan Thomas will tie for second place with 7 a piece.

    15. Dwight Lowery will be the Jets rookie of the year, playing the bulk of the reps opposite Darrelle Revis.

    16. The Jets will have issues at safety with Eric Smith and Abram Elam splitting reps.

    17. The AFC Playoff teams? New England, San Diego, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Indiannapolis, New York Jets.

    18. The NFC Playoff teams? New York Giants, Seattle, Minnesota, New Orleans, Dallas, Philadelphia.

  19. I would read a lot into coles not being named a captain. It shows that his team mates, who elect the captains, agree with JETS fans that we have had enough of his antics.

  20. “6. The Jets biggest let downs this year? When they lose in Buffalo and Tennessee and at home to Denver.”
Seeing as how the 8-12 games goes BUF, STL, NE, TEN, DEN, that could be a bad series. If the NE is a split and the second game, there, is our win, then it’s not so bad. Otherwise you’re saying 1 and 4 with three straight losses!

  21. I’ll never understand the love/hate relationship Jets fans have with Coles- The bottom line is this- The guy is fiercly loyal and fiercly competitive, sometimes to a fault- The one thing we all know is that come Sundays, LC is going to go up, grab a ball in traffic and get licked- Then hes gonna run back to the huddle and do it all again. Pennington nearly got this guy killed how many times? Tell me you wouldn’t want him on your side as a team-mate, I know I would

  22. I think they should have had Kris Jenkins as a Defensive Captain, instead of Ellis. I really liked Ellis but, if he doesn’t pick up his game – - he will end up Captain of a Madden football team.

Coles is not the Captain type, he’s got a personality disorder. On the other hand, if he stays healthy, he could have a huge year.

Brad, If anyone is making All-Pro it’s David Harris. He did it, last year, without Jenkins. This year, he is going to be a monster. Other than that, good job. I’ll take 11-5, in a heartbeat.

  23. Brad;

Great post, great post. I agree with everything exept the Jets beating the Pats in the second game. It will be the first game ,exept ofcourse, we lose to Pennington !!
