Start Me Up: Wide Receiver #1

Over the next few days, we are going to take a quick look at each and every position of starters on this team.  Today, we start with Wide Receivers and will work through the offense and across the ball.

Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Jerricho Cotchery.  Sure, Coles might be the David St Hubbins of this punctual group, but Cotchery is the Nigel Tufnel … the true creative force.  A lot of things have changed since the end of last season that will only help Cotchery: beefing up an offensive line to provide more time for the quarterback, a passer who likes to hold the ball to find (and can reach) deep targets downfield, and a bevy of new inside threats (Stuckey, Clowney & Keller) to keep the middle of the field honest and in fits in spread formations .

Cotchery’s ability on the perimeter, as well as his versatility and solid route running have already endeared him to Mr. Favre who he’s spent more time with than Laveranues over the past month, due to Coles’ injury.  If Favre can buy him the time, and Cotchery can play 16 games, look for Cotchery’s receiving numbers to jump in Yards, Yard Per Catch and in Touchdowns, cementing him as the true first option of this offense.

  1. I don’t get the David St Hubbin and Nigel Tufnel reference. I must be too young for them?

I hope Cotchery has a 1200 yrd 8+ TD year with Favre throwing to him! I picked him over Anquan Boldin in my fantasy league, it better have been worth it.

  2. I cant wait for Sunday….i got knots in my stomach already

  3. 1. Cotchery 2. Keller 3. Clowney (when healthy)

Is Coles even on the team?

  4. vbsiena (my youthful friend),
The reference is from “This Is Spinal Tap” and it is required viewing.

  5. Yea Cotch proved last year he is the go to guy…Coles is still a good WR but he isnt what he once was and Cotchery I think still has some growing to do.

  6. Basically I don’t think we have some Cotchery full potential yet, with Favre throwing to him there are more oppotuntities for him now

  7. I’m looking for Cotchery to turn it up to 11 this season!!!

  8. Coles missed some games for the first time last year… I think he’s proven he’s durable. I like debating as to which two really good receivers is #1. It’s like watching a miss America pagent and wondering who’s hotter. Even with Faneca though I think we still need to pass to set up the run :(

  9. I agree with Reprocity on that people shouldn’t be giving up on Coles. Just because he hasn’t played in a while doesn’t mean he wont be just as good as Cotchery. If anyone rembers the Giants game he caught some ridiculous balls, plus the 60 yard catch against the Steelers and the 56-yard TD from Chad against the Bengals showing he can still catch the long ball even though he is a tremendous possesion receiver.

  10. think about it this guy did pretty good with a avg. armed QB and a QB who had the arm but didnt know what to do with it , and now all cotchery has got to do is play like he did last year , oh by the way coles was injured so almost everyone payed attention to this guy because he was the only threat , no they get coles back and all these other young and talented WR/TE

  11. I think Coles is still very good. As for his sitting out thus far through training camp, its pretty normal for older guys who have some wear and tear on them (this guy has been catching our beloved CP’s passes for years!).

All over the NFL, older guys milk injuries to avoid the rigors of training camp. Either he is doing that, or it makes the most sense for him to avoid additional wear and tear.

The guy is the consummate professional and his skills include great coaching points of emphasis like running great routes, great footwork, catching the ball with proper form, etc. He’ll be fine!

  12. we have2 #1 recievers…there both good and the rest of our group makes the unit even better…

    repro…

i agree…i also think we will setup the run with the pass…and i hope they use leon alot more than they did last year…the guy can score anywhere on the field…
    anyway,just my thoughts…

  13. Coles is still a good palyer, and will give 100% for the team. He and Cotchery make two very good WR’s, maybe even top 10 in the league. I think they will both have terrific years with Favre as the QB.

  14. dak,

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Leon take over as the primary ball carrier at some point this year.

  16. A consummate pro plays great football. Talking ti the press only matters to the press and the fans. I’ll take a crybaby who plays great (Coles) over a good natured, consummate pro (McCariens, anyone) any day of the week.
