Dwight “Swipe” Lowery to Start?

Rich Cimini noted on his blog yesterday that Dwight Lowery was working with the first unit.

Rookie Dwight Lowery was paired with LCB Darrelle Revis in positional drills, so it looks like there’s a very good chance that Lowery will start. That he was rested with the other starters in the final preseason game also was a not-so-subtle hint that he’s a likely starter. That would leave Justin Miller, Drew Coleman and Ahman Carroll as the backups. It looks like David Barrett is working at safety.

It’s hard not to be geeked about this.  Watching Lowery in the preaseason, if he’s this good as a raw rookie, I can’t wait to see what he can be when he’s seasoned.  On top of that, his energy on the field is contagious, and I would love to see him lock down this job for the season.  Watch him closely against his primary charge, the 6′2″ 215 pound Derek Hagan this weekend .. it will be a good test for him.

  1. Greg Camarillo is supposed to be the #2 WR for Miami. I read it yesterday. He was the guy who delivered their one win.

  2. aw nuts …. thanks JAGG!

  3. College walk-on, undrafted free agent and former practice squad player Greg Camarillo has supplanted Derek Hagan as the starting No. 2 WR.

I had just gone to get evidence to prove I wasn’t nuts too.

  4. Bassett:

As soon as we drafted Lowery I bet E Boland a NYC Sabrett with mustard and onions that we had struck gold again in the 4th round and that Lowery would start for the Jets. ALL the so called “experts” were down on this kid as a wasted pick because he was too slow.
After watching him during the preseason I will go one better. He is the one player that knows the game of football better than ANY OTHER player on the Jets D.
Lowery WILL be the NY Jets ROY. He exudes confidence, he is alot of fun to watch as he hawks the ball.

  5. I agree w Hank. The production attached to Lowery was incredible during his college days, there is no reason to believe he won’t bring that capability to the next level.

The wrist injury is of no concern- it will not inhibit, or delay any growth/ comeback/ etc.

And the speed issue, well we have all seen how he moves in pads, on the field, etc. He’s got some of the best instincts I’ve seen in a while and I’ll take that over a 4.3 every day of the week.

I also like him in the 2nd position and what should be a mixed-zone based defense on passing downs. The added pressure up front should cover some flaws. If he can sit in that intermediate zone, with his instincts we could see alot of picks from the QB’s who are pressured and cannot make all the reads.

Not only do I think he’s a tremendous fit but a solid solid player. Hank and others are correct, this is another gem in Rd 4.

  6. I’m fine with Lowery starting week one against Chad and the Phins. Of more concern will be the next two games–facing our buddy Brady and then Rivers and the Chargers.

  7. Call me over optimisic, but I think the Jets have the best young corner tandem in the NFL, and I think Lowery will join Revis in the pro-bowl within the next 2 years.
This is assuming that Revis becomes the dominant shut down corner i expect him to be as well.
