Start Me Up: Tight End

Over the next few days, we are going to take a quick look at each and every position of starters on this team. Now we’re talking about the Tight End and will work through the rest of the offense and across the ball.
2008 has been rocky road between Chris Baker and the Jets, but Baker is still the team’s nominal starter for the Jets at the start of the season. With more depth and specialization than last year (Bubba Franks and Dustin Keller) expect Baker’s time and targets to be down this season from last, as Franks takes away from Baker’s red zone targets and Keller is used in the middle of the field to create mismatches for defenses. Baker, who is a solid pass-catcher and blocker, complained that the team held him in to block last season, which might be true, but when you consider that 28/41 catches and 2/3 touchdowns were with him spread from the line, it’s clear that the team was working to still get him the ball. With Keller now in the fold, that role will be better filled by him, so expect to see Baker glued to Brick or Woody a lot more this season.
For all the changes, Baker’s strength is in his versatility in comparison to Keller or Franks. Baker has commendable ability to stay in and block or to run a pattern for and use his soft hands to catch passes. Baker might be more important to Pennington or Clemens running of this offense, but expect him to be a key — but statistically quiet — part of this offense.

I’m gald CB and the team worked out their differences. CB is important to the team, and I hope he has a good year.
Baker is a good player and always has been — Favre will go to him often — However, the Man is Dustin Keller — With Chad it would have painful to wonder “what might have been” after trading up to get a player this talented without being able to maximize that talent — With Favre we don’t have to wonder — When Keller gets separation downfield, the ball will be there from Favre and Keller will run away and/or knock over and then run away from defenders — Bubba Franks is Favre’s wingman and that means a lot –
