Breaking News: Brady Reportedly Out for the Season

Torn ACL…or more Belichickian gamesmanship? You decide, but it seems the reports that Tom Brady’s knee injury suffered earlier today against the Chiefs was a really, really bad one are all over the internet. Now *that* would be karma.

Personally, I would have preferred to see Brady lose to the Jets, so while this (potential for an improbable Mo Lewis / Drew Bledsoe scenario notwithstanding) should help the Jets, it is somewhat of an empty victory.

However, I am sure there are those of you that are rejoicing right now. That self-satisfaction you are taking in the misfortune of another … Bradenfreude.

UPDATE: Michael Silver is reporting on Yahoo! that Brady will be out for the year.

  1. IF WE BEAT THE PATS TWICE THIS SEASON THOSE WINS WILL BE CHEAP IT’S MORE FUN TO BEAT THEM WITH THEIR FRANCHISE QB.

  2. **** Brady. Let him suffer. I couldn’t be happier. If we beat the Pats, the wins will not be cheap, they will be karmic.

  3. There was a steeler fan at the bar where I was I watching the game, who jumped up and yelled for about ten minutes about Brady being hurt. Myself, and about half the bar wanted to walk up and shut him up. I was excited (not nervous) about next week, we finally had the opportunity to give the Pats a real run for their money. Unfortunately now, a win for the JETS, while I would love it still, would only come second hand. Maybe Brady will be back in time for round two, and our boys can hand it to the real Pats.

Still had a lot of fun watching the game today though.

  4. it really won’t matter a huge amount ..bellichecks offense is plug and play i doubt cassell will do much worse then brady ..the good thing will be next year brady will be on the bills then cowboys then retire (drew bledsoe esque lol) then we can hate how matt cassell is the guy everyone sucks up to in sports ..seriously though i hate to rejoice in see an injury but f* brady and lets hope this is the demise of the pats this season

  5. REPOST — I was at the game when Mo Lewis knocked out Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady came off the bench — The Patriots won the Super Bowl that year — Bottom line: Be careful what you wish for –’

My concern after today is that if Brady is out and we do take a lead against the Patriots next week that Mangini will once again sit on our lead — After all, there is only one Chad Pennington — Therefore, Matt Cassell is not Chad Pennington and we can’t count on him to not pull out a victory for the Patriots — We have to let Favre throw the entire game and put teams away

  6. If Cassell comes in and is as successful as Brady, what does that do to Brady’s reputation as the greatest ever QB in the all time history of the league ever?

  7. Stay classy, Jets fans

  8. I would like to say I’m not happy about pretty boy Brady getting injured, but I can’t. The Patriorts are like the Dolphins when Marino was there anything bad that can happen let it happen it’s Murphy’s Law. Next step watch Moss revert to his “Alligator Arm” Raider days then Bellicheck will really start to squirm.

  9. Lets see how “great” of a coach Belicheat is, now with Brady getting injured.

  10. If Cassel plays Steve Young to Brady’s Montana, I’ll eat my Jets cap. While Moss is always open and should be targeted all the time, Revis will be on him next week, so what does Cassel do when he has to go to his second and third options? That’s what separates the journeyman from the great QB.

Bent, what did you think of Matt Ryan? I wonder if seanmac will go back and tell Lewin to put in 6-4+ for evaluating QB prospects…LOL.

  11. can you guys say 4-0?

  12. I’ll admit i had the same sentiment when it came to facing brady because i wanted to be beat him but that was him sitting out for a week…..

out for a season?! I’ll take it!!!!

  13. Poor guy

  14. FYI this is the source of the info from the article linked to above: “One New York Jets player said players and coaches were saying Brady suffered a torn ACL. That, however, has not been confirmed. If Brady were to have suffered a torn ACL, his season would be over.” An anonymous quote from a Jets player relaying hearsay, I’d hold off before declaring Brady out for the season, let alone out for next week’s game. in any event, I hope he is OK. Not because I want to beat the best, just because I’m not going to root for a player to be injured.

I just saw the video from today’s game, a few players really stood out. Faneca was an absolute beast on a few running plays. Calvin Pace looked great rushing the passer and against the run (although once or twice he was beaten by receivers in space, most notably Ricky Williams’ catch late in the 4th - but thats only fair, the guy is a mammoth line backer). Darrelle Revis, thats MR. Lockdown to you. I like what I see out of Lowery, good competitor, excellent instincts. For some reason he really struggles against TEs roaming TEs crossing the middle. Against Martin Rucker in the preseason and against Martin (?) on the Phins 2nd TD today. This offense is fun to watch and potentially explosive (notwithstanding going ultraconservative in the 4th- which I sort of agreed with giving the impotence of the Phins offense to that point).

  15. GUYS GOOD GAME TODAY CHARGERS LOST AS WELL I DONT THINK IT MATTERS IF BRADY OR WHO EVER PLAYS BRET BROUGHT HIS LUCK WITH HIM HES ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER BUT WE AS JET FANS NEED TO TAKE IT ONE GAME AT A TIME STOP TALKING ABOUT 4-0 ONE GAME AT A TIME IM STILL WAITING FOR THE OTHER SHOE DROP HOPE NOT BUT WE ARE ALL JET FANS

  16. After living through Vinny’s achilles in ‘99, Chad’s wrist, shoulder, shoulder, and ankle in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 respectively (all seasons with varying level of high expectations) I can feel neither bad about this nor can I look at it as cheapening the opportunity it provides to the other 3 teams in this division. After all, someone won the AFC East in the years we faced serious injuries to our QBs.

That said, Buffalo looks to be better than advertise, Miami is much improved, and the Pats are still a threat to win double digits. BUT, winning with a backup QB is not easy in this league, let alone when he is replacing the best QB in the league (arguably.)

  17. Brady has an MRI Monday, but the prognosis is not good according to several different sources. I just linked to the first one I found.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Off topic:

Matt Ryan? Good first game. Obviously I didn’t see the whole game, but his highlights were good…but I will reserve judgement for the time being because (a) it was the Lions (b) he was backed up by a 330 yard running attack and (c) if you exclude his first pass, he only threw for 99 yards. Remember my view all along was that he would probably be pretty good, but that I wasn’t certain enough of this to take the financial risk and I stand by that.

  18. Would have loved to seen Brady get hammered by the Jets but I am not crying he might be out for the year.

  19. this is from profootballtalk.com:

Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports reports that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with a “severe injury to his left knee.”

The injury is widely believed to be a torn ACL. Silver says that there could be other ligament and cartilage damage.

“It’s bad,” a team source told Silver. “We’re going to have to play without him.”

The starter will be Matt Cassel. Unless the Pats bring back Vinny Testaverde. Or Doug Flutie. Or Steve Grogan.

UPDATE: Silver’s report has been updated — the ACL tear is confirmed.

ESPN sent text messages saying “A Patriot’s player says Matt Cassel will be team’s starting QB for rest of year”

still its the Patriots so who knows

  20. Al Michaels just said the Pats are bringing in Chris Simms ….

  21. NE will bring in Simms tomorrow which could mean Brady will be out for an extended period of time.

I just watched the game on tape, any word on Nugent?

We should have won that game by 14 points but a win is a win. Let’s go Jets

  22. mark my words brady will never play in the nfl again…
he took that loss last year really bad….he’s probably glad he’s out for the season

  23. Regardless of what happens with Brady… things are starting to look up! Miami was a trap game with the Humidity, Pennington, the Parcells Umbrella, and the fact they had nothing to lose while the Jets had an entire offseason of moves that the fans might have lost confidence with. Gang Green should come out like Gangbusters in this next game regardless of who is under center for Billacheat and the Brady Biatches. I honestly don’t wish injury on anyone, especially because I’d like to see this new Jets team take out an excuse free Pats team…

With that said… I have no problem with them pounding on Matt Cassell and a depleted Pats team to the tune of 45-3 this week!!! BOO-YAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  24. This is still the Patriots, with or without Brady. I’m not saying Cassel is Brady, but he is an unknown right now, and could turn out to be a difficult opponent. Remember he still has plenty of weapons at his disposal.

  25. Prince — Buffalo has won their last three games against the Jets — No Jets fan should take them lightly –

  26. Hey Prince….my sentiments exactly. I never heard one person claim that beating the Jets with Rick Mirer or Ray Lucas after Vinnie blew out his achilles that it cheapened their season.

I don’t root for players to ever get hurt, but I will certainly not shed a tear if they have to stick a fork in Brady for the year because he is done.

Maybe the breaks start going the other way for the first time in 40 years.

  27. More than hearing that Brady is out, I want to hear that Feeley or the guy that was in camp is out at Florham Park for a tryout. The missed FG and decision to not kick the extra point, along with the poor kickoffs, contributed more to a closer game than necessary than any other aspect of the game. The missed FG resulted in a 10 point swing, and the decision not to kick the PAT gave us all more stress than we needed today.

    OFF TOPIC:

Bent, I agree that the 1st round money that Ryan got was obscene and, the way the QB situation worked out (with Favre and the emergence of Ratliff), I am more optimistic about the future of the QB position on the Jets. That being said, I like Ryan and am not surprised with how he played in the pre-season or his NFL debut.

  28. Didn’t we take Trent Edwards lightly last year?
I hope BB doesn’t hire Mr. Miyagi to either rub his hands together or use that acidic concoction on TB.

Very psyched to be heading up to the game next weekend in my first year as a season owner.

  29. Please Please Please get a new Kicker!!!!! Let’s do this season right. Another kicker should have been brought in due to NUDGE IT playing bad in preseason. So let us pick up a kicker, fast.

  30. While you hate to see anyone get hurt like this, I’m going to enjoy the Matt Cassell show. After sufferring through the Bollinger/Testaverde combo three years ago, and the Mirer/Lucas mess back in 2000, it will be fun to see the Pats have to deal with this. They just reported at halftime of the Sunday night game that the Pats are bringing in Chris Simms tomorrow.

All of a sudden, the division is wide open.

  31. Thats what happens when you sell your soul to the devil…
AFC East is now officially open for business,
and the stars continue to align.

  32. I know it’s wrong, but I love this. Not even because it helps the Jets, but because I’m a bitter NY fan who is just as concerned with the Patriots losing as the Jets winning.

    Screw you, Brady.

  33. Sorry if the last paragraph of my last quote was misread, but I clearly indicate that we can’t take Buffalo, Miami, or New England minus Brady lightly. No cakewalk against any team in this division this year, but lets face it, there’s now no one team that is a lock to take the division.

  34. You don’t like to see anyone get hurt, let alone a big star. On the other hand, let’s see how good the Patsies really are. We’ll finally get a great chance to see how much of it was Belichick coaching or Brady throwing. And we are in good position, for once, to play them right after the injury. There’s a lot to look forward to after this opening week.

  35. The Pats still have a relatively easy schedule, great skill position players and a team of winners. Instead of feeling relieved that Brady is out, the Jets OL has to work on pass-blocking and cutting down penalties, the OLBs and safeties (yes, you Mr. Smith) have to work on covering the TE, Coles has to get used to Favre’s fastballs, and we need a reliable kicker. Let’s worry about the Jets building on this win and getting better. With or without Brady, the Jets need to improve to beat the Pats and be a factor in the AFC.

  36. Gene Woj. on ESPN.com just wrote a column declaring the Jets the favorites in the East…

  37. i just wish it was the jets that hurt him….and it was on the last play in an afc divisional playoff game with the pats trying desperately in the closing seconds to throw a hail mary to beat the jets….

just so the last thing he remembers while lying on the ground in pain is looking up at the scoreboard and seeing the score and watching the jets dance around him…..

sick i kno…but that is how much i despise him as a person

  38. Normally, I don’t like to see something like this happen…for Brady though? I just cannot feel bad.

If this is for real, beating the Pats will not be empty without him. We will just have to beat them anyhow.

  39. You shouldnt despise him. You should despise his coach. He’s a cheat!!! He will lose many games this year because of it. Starting with his next one. 17-10 vs KC. It’ll only get worse for them.

  40. Every year there are season ending injuries. That’s just the way things are…

That being said, if the Jets were to win the division and the Pats go 8-8 because Brady is out for the season, so what?

I’ll take it, because they would be the best this year. Next year, it’s a another year and another different set of circumstances.

  41. Count me in as a rejoicer. Nothing ticks the gods off more than arrogance. Trying to copyright “19-0″ before achieving it, sealed the Pats fate, Not only did they lose the SB, but they won’t even make the play-offs without Brady. Living in New England I’ve had to endure the trash talk of Pat fans for years. Tomorrow, I greet my fellow New Englanders with a huge grin.

  42. Sweet coinage of Bradenfreude Bassett!

I’m going to be sure to use tha with all my Jet-nerd-friends.

In some sort of Shakespearian way, the universe is slowly coming back into order.

  43. well lets not all think this team is gonna fall apart at the seams…yea brady is hurt…and it is unfortunate for NE…but they still are the team to beat…they still have a good defense and lets not forget 1 of the best recievers in the league in moss with his sidekick wes welker…a good run game and a good line to go with that…i know the QB is the most important player on the field…but everybody makes it sound like NE is gonna roll over and die…believe me they’re not…if anything they’ll play just as hard if not harder to pick up the slack from the QB play…there still the team to beat with or without brady…just my thoughts…

  44. I agree with Prince’s sentiments above. I don’t like to see a guy get hurt but we’ve had our share of devastating injuries and the Pats didn’t give any wins back because of them. I didn’t see them handing back the AFC trophy when Phillip Rivers hobbled through the game and LT couldn’t get off the bench at all, either. It’s part of the game. I do think it opens the door a crack for the Jets but NE still won’t go gently and we better focus on getting better no matter who they have behind center.

  45. Well as long as Matt Cassel doesn’t turn a Tom Brady (and all signs point to he won’t) then I think the Pats offensive is going to look average for the rest of the year.

  46. If you’re happy a guy got injured you’re an idiot. You don’t wish or rejoice that on any human being, even if it is Tom Brady. Who wants to win when you’re opponent is a man down? Head’s up is how a man plays. Injuries happen yeah…but don’t rejoice like we just got a win. They’re still Belichek’s Pats.

  47. this is off the brady topic…

what i dont understand is why did we go away from are attacking DEFENSE and decide to just rush 3 or 4 guys and give chad a chance to pick us apart…whats wrong with sutton…why does this guy insist on making every game come down to the wire…why does he like to take a comfortable lead and make the game into a nail biter…i want to see attack attack attack from now on…im tired of him going to his rocking chair and getting lost by over thinking things…just attack from begining to end…god bless is it to much to ask for…

  48. by the way i loved how the D was attacking relentlessly it was nice to see spagnuolo isn’t the only defensive coordinator in NY that can devise a blitz package

  49. You don’t think we have as much a chance to get injured as they do? lol

The “I would have preferred him to be healthy so we can beat their best team” garbage is gonna get real annoying real quick.

  50. ding. dong. the witch is dead.

  51. The Jets should not take this next game against NE lightly just because Brady wil not be there. One player does not make a team, they still have a good defense, and they can still run the ball. They will alter their schemes to suit Cassell’s strenghts, and will still be a dangerous team, maybe more so now that they have to circle the wagons.

  52. Victories against the Pat are never empty

  53. I don’t wish ill will on anyone, but no one felt sorry for us when Vinny blew out his achilles in 1999, did they? Nor did anyone feel any sympathy when we watched injury after injury to Pennington. Injuries are part of the game, and it was just Brady’s time.

A win is a win, and it won’t be any cheaper to me one way or another be it with Brady or without.

I agree that the AFC East now appears open for business, but I caution everyone on the Bills. I taped their game while I watched the Jets, and went back and watched them destroy the Seahawks. Very, very impressive.

  54. Has Gary Myers suggested that the Pats trade for Leinart as a replacement for Brady yet? How ironic it would be if this happened and it helped the Jets win the division. Too bad the Pats are too smart for that move.

  55. I’m with you. I’d rather see Brady lose to the Jets.

Ultimately, I am a football fan as much as I am a Jet fan and losing a great player like Brady, even if I hate him as a Pat, is a loss for the the league.

(Who are these knucleheads who cheered his injury at ESPN zone?)

  56. That’s sports. No team can be the best forever SOMETHING will happen and in this case it was an injury. However, I am excited for 2 reasons, 1) I can’t stand Patriot fans that got used to winning 2) I love to see Bellichick get screwed. I don’t wish an injury on anyone, but this makes the whole league more fun this year instead of having the boring ass Patriots in the play-offs cheating and crying we now have no idea who will do what in the play-offs…… GO JETS !!!!
