It’s Official: Tom Brady Done for 2008
Posted on September 8th, 2008 by Corey Griffin
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick confirmed at a 3:00 p.m. press conference that quarterback Tom Brady is out for the year with “knee surgery.” Typical Pats, there’s no distinct status as to what or where he hurt, but he is confirming that knee surgery will shelve Brady for the 2008 season.
Some notes from the press conference:
- Belichick also expressed confidence in backup Matt Cassel and that they did not have any plans at the moment to start someone other than Cassel.
- He said that plenty of teams have called them but they have not called other teams.
- Any questions on the rules or the potential of a “dirty hit” will have to be handled by the NFL.
- On Brady’s recovery: “You’ll have to ask the doctors.”
- On Brady’s return: “When he’s ready, I’m sure he’ll be back out there.”
- On what kind of injury it is: “The information we have I gave you.”
Typical Pats. At least he said it was the left knee. Jets fans who remember the Vilma knee injury, there’s at least that.
More to come if I can get it.

again … sucks that the Jets don’t get the chance to best brady next weekend themselves, but this doesn’t make the game by any stretch a gimmee now for the Jets. cassel and the rest of the team will be ready, let’s just hope the jets can win this one.
If anything, you know that Belicrap is going to use all of this as motivation. The fact that they, the mighty 16-0 Patriots are a 2.5 point underdog to a team coming off 4-12. That everyone is writing them off due to the Brady injury.
We had better be ready to play.
A cry for help:
I have tickets to this Sunday’s game against the Pats. I have not been to a game since the start of the new stadium, and hence the parking changes.
Can someone tell me what the procedure is for the off site parking? I will be coming from Westchester, crossing the GWB and taking the NJ-TPKE. What exit is the parking and where do I catch the shuttle bus to the stadium?
Any help will be much appreciated.
This could be the trap game that everyone was predicting would happen against the fish.
They (the Pats) can still play defense, they can still run the ball, and they still have Moss and Welker. I am sure that Belichek will alter the plan to suit Cassels strenghts. They will have a “circle the wagons” mentality, and will be dangerous. We better be ready.
oh wow i smell 4-0 before the bye week, well we have a chance against NE , and SD everyone was injured last year, LT PR AG and all those other guys who are important and not to mention merriman is still injured and the Cards have no chance against us
nyckage,
I’ve been a Jet fan too long to fall for that. We need to take them one game at a time and not look ahead. Even without Brady the Pats will give us everything we can handle.
Remember the saying “any given Sunday”.
Yes…everyone should not assume the Jets will win. The Pats are still a very dangerous team and will not throw in the towel, everyone should know that.
They will come at us with a heavy dose of running and play action. We will need to blitz early and often and try and get to Cassell early. B/C he WILL be very nervous (I assume) to start the game…his first career start/ in NY/ in a packed NY/ against Brett “hall of fame” Favre
ramble914
those werent expectations at all i was just trying ot say that now 4-0 seems more realistic since the guys we play are beat up
ramble .. email me at thejetsblog@gmail.com for parking information.
Woo-Hoo!!!!
I know it it is rude, immature, classless etc. to bask in Brady’s injury but I dont care tis a joyous day!
“F” Brady, “F” the Patriots, and “F” Boston!!!!
Woo-Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone needs to remember that Cassel is going to have the best security blanket in the world. Randy Moss. Remember how good he made Culpepper look?
u know i gotta say belichek during the presser said a few nice things about the jets ..showed a lot of class
“F” Boston is a fine sentiment. Any time, for most any reason.
Lets just hope Cassel doesn’t pull a Culpepper and realize that Moss is the ticket to an undeserved ProBowl or two.
I would just caution those out there who are celebrating Brady’s injury — the Jets have a 39-year-old QB and are themselves one hit away from playing a marginal backup QB.
Belichick has a losing record without Brady. If we can get a kicker we should be able to continue this trend.
who CARES what leg it was…just WATCH the REPLAY and YOU tell ME what leg it was!
chowdah:
Your wife’s at Gate D.
your right RinCT…NOONE should be CELEBRATING a serious or even NOT so serious INJURY to ANYONE!! that sounds like MASSACHUSETTS FANS or PHILLY FANS…NOT New York FANS!!
I’m sick and tired of brady and belichek and the whole damn region if you ask me. Bringing the pats down to earth is good for the division and the AFC in general. You never wish injury upon anyone but after I heard about brady, I, along with any realistic jet fan, had to admit to smiling just a bit. None of these games are gimmes. Remember what happened after month lewis nearly killed bledsoe. Let the games begin
Touche, R in CT. Touche.
Farve = ticket sales and an 8 – 8 season. Period.
Oh, by the way, WK? Jets games are always gimmes. Talk to you next week when you’re 1 & 1.
TOM, YOU COULD HAVE DANCED ON THE SUN BUT YOUR WORLD CAME UN-DONE.
THIS PAIN IN YOUR KNEE ESCAPES FROM YOUR HEART
BYE BYE TOMMY
THERES NO ONE COULD TAKE YOUR PLACE
BYE BYE TOMMY
tim go suck off next week when were 2-0 you won’t be nowhere to be found.
I would never hope for anyone to get injured (except maybe in anger…and for Tom) but I am happy the Patroits are now weaker. That is a fact. Just like when we lost Vinny. Just like when we lost Chad a couple of times. Adversity is football, and we’ll soon see how well Bilicheat has prepared his team for it. The Jets better not ease up knowing Tom’s out.
actually, i HOPE TIM tears his acl……or at least HIS tongue!!
guys you gotta remember brady is one player out of what a boat load of probowlers this is not a gimmi every QB out there has stronger arm than chad not smarter but stronger if chad did have a better arm we lose yesterday and as a fan for 32 years thats just being real but we will get a hell of alot better as we go.. next week will be fun but like alot of us say a win would not be the same with out making brady eat some dirt..
i said this before and im saying it again…i thought we could beat NE with or without brady…we did it before and our team hasn’t been better…but i really wanted beat them with brady so we wont hear…
( the jets only won because brady didn’t play )
which i think would be total B.S…anyway, just my thoughts…
If we don’t play better than we did week 1, which I am sure we will, we won’t beat NE with or without Brady.
There was some good things yesterday, but also bad. Build every week, and beating a Patriots team will definitely build confident for a nationally televised MNF against the Chargers in San Diego… This could be the start of something great, or something terrible (confidence-wise)
Pats probably still beat us…They’re still the Pats and Cassell has been the backup for a few years now for a reason so he must not suck too bad.
yeah MATT,but THIS isnt the SAME JETS team!!
And Mercury Morris says “We went undefeated without our starting QB”
Not sure who the other “Tim” is, but I (the Tim that’s been posting here and there on thejetsblog for over a year now) do not share his Jets hating sentiments, so please don’t get us confused. I’m thinking that with his reference to “ladies”, he thinks he’s posting on a WNBA blog. ? :)
Pats will get SMOKED on sunday
Quoting the great Joe Willie
” I GUARENTEE IT”
Belichick is not as great as advertised. He has a losing record without Brady at QB.
We should win. But we will need a kicker this week.
Just go out an win the game. Lose this one and it will be the same old JETS..no excuses here, just win!!!!
All of a sudden eveyone is being politically correct and this New York, not Philly?? Huh!
Jets fans are a raucus bunch and although nobody wants anyone to get hurt, it sure is a relief knowing the Patsies finally were dealt a devastating blow and Belichek has his hands full. Let’s face it, the guy didn’t get shot and killed in IRAQ and people are excited. He hurt his knee playing a game for crying out loud. The Pats are the Jets arch enemy and Brady is a huge Jets killer. If he went down in the Meadowlands, the place would have been going crazy. Sure, its not sportsman like, but after all these years of frustation, let someone else get the bad break or tear.
So, ding dong, the witch is dead! At least for a year, maybe a career. Who gives a rats @$$ if we beat them without Brady, end up with a better record, go to the playoffs, dare we say more than that…Do you think the Jets or any other team would have some kind of ****asterisk**** next to their name because Brady was hurt for the season. The answer is NO! Let’s enjoy not being on the short end of the stick for once. Our division rival is not going to be as good as they were. I hope we make the best of it , take advatage of it and capilalize as much as possible. Afterwards, we can all have a vigil for Mr. Bunchden, hold hands and sing songs. But let’s hope that’s after we kick their @$$ on Sunday.
I think I could watch that replay of Tom Brady’s knee exploding over and over. I normally don’t wish injuries upon someone, but injures have to happen to some team every year, why not have it be Brady’s Pats? Our potential Super Bowl season got derailed when Pennington and Jay Fiedler both got knocked out for the season in the same game, not to mention we lost our starting LG, C, RB, TE, and probably some other guys I forgot. I guess Herm finally did something good for the Jets.
1 thing true about all this is no1 cried when testeverty went down for the year back in 99 that started a domino effect of injuries when we were supposed to go places with parcells…so im definitly not crying over brady…players get hurt all the time… tough luck…deal with it…we did…a few times…so whoopi dam doo dah…
every1 makes it seem like he’s the only good player in the nfl…1 more thing…get over it…just my thoughts…
David i – I get the sentiment. Were the NE fans feeling all weepy every time Chad went down? Or Vinny? Hardly.
Or maybe they wanted to give the AFC Championship back during “the fumble” vs the Raiders because they didn’t feel they deserved it? Doubt it.
I believe, if luck is a lady, she is a harsh mistress. Although it’s not like NE has such a great history, just a great recent history – history will not repeat itself this year.
I find it ironic that Brady got knocked out for the year during a game in which (for the first time in 3 years) he was not listed on the injury report.
Just a hunch, here, but Cassell will be listed as “probable” with a mysterious shoulder injury this week.
Hey Bill, can’t we just say that…
“…The QB of the NEP will be MIA this season…”
8 & 8, ladies.
Jimbo:
Potential Super Bowl season? That’s just sad, bunky.
