Jay Feely Signed to the Jets

by Bassett on September 8th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

According to Cimini of the Daily News, the Jets have signed replacement kicker Jay Feely to help the team while Mike Nugent recovers from his thigh bruise.  It’s unknown for how long Nugent will be out.

Feely is a serviceable player, and has a career kicking percentage of 80.8% and is best from 40 yards and under, meaning the Jets will need to drive to around the 20-25 to consider kicks automatic and for his career is around 66% from beyond that range.  Feely was 7/9 last year from over forty yards.

The Jets will have to release a player to make room for Feely or put Nugent in the Injured Reserve (season ending) to make room for Feely.  If they decide to make room, my best guess is that they will release someone like Kenwin Cummings or try to place someone else on the IR, like Erik Ainge who could be considered as “recovering” from his pinky surgery.

    Fred — Who didn’t?

Obviusly had Nugent not hurt himself this wound not have happened, but I wonder what the overall disatisfaction level was towards Nugent. He may have been on thin ice anyway. Considering he was selected as high as you will see a PK get taken, he’s pretty mediorcre.

Hopefully, Feely can tell us what the Chiefs will be up to October 26th –

Walt — I saw Sebastian Janikowski taken higher in 2000 –

If Nugent’s released, does Coles stop talking to the media again?

    lol that was nuts johnny

  8. avatar James in TN says:

release nugent and teach clemens to kick he can’t throw.

  9. avatar pat d says:

    Is Nugent still a jet?

    Not for long.

  10. Would placing Erik Ainge on IR risk losing him to another team?

    If so, don’t do it.

A player on IR is protected

hmm I don’t think it’s too early to start looking at kickers coming out in the 09 draft.

    Sam Swank Wake Forest
    Jose Martinez UTEP
    Austin Scott Indiana
    Swayze Waters UAB

are a few guys to keep an eye on.

even though all kickers get on my nerves…nug. isn’t as bad as some of you guys make him out to be…he has improved on his kickoffs and he does make a high percentage of his field goals…so cut him some slack… he’ll do good for us…as soon as he comes back from his injury…

  16. avatar Paul says:

I wouldn’t give up on Nugent yet. When he’s on a hot streak he doesn’t miss many.

  17. avatar billvv says:

There also seems to be a misunderstanding about his kickoffs coming up short. It should be noted that it is intentional. Touchbacks are not in the plan for the Jets kicker. The idea has always been to kick to between the five and the goal line, which he does regularly. Mangini mentioned it earlier this year.

  18. avatar ramble914 says:

Nugent is pretty automatic out to 50 yds., which is pretty darn good. Beyond 50, he’s dicey, but who isn’t?

  19. avatar ramble914 says:

    billvv,

I had never heard that. I don’t know why they wouldn’t want touchbacks, it eliminates the possibilty of a runback, or good field position. If you could put every kickoff at the back of the end zone, then the ball is put at the 20, that’s what I would want.

  20. avatar Mad Dog Mo says:

ramble…bill is right. I have played on and coached many special teams units. Albeit not in the pros…

The idea is to get the ball in play and create opportunities for miscues and turnovers. Starting at the 20 is decent field position. That’s why punters don’t kick it out of the end zone every chance they get.

There is nothing more demoralizing then coming up short of the 20 or fumbling a return.

My guess is that either Elam or Carroll will be released.

  22. avatar Nick says:

Feely played very well for the Dolphins last season. They got rid of him because BP likes to turn the roster, no matter if the players are good or bad, in order to change the culture. That doesn’t mean he won’t be a great addition to the Jets.

Sadly, i don’t think we can afford the luxery of 4QB’s anymore. Time to drop/IR Ainge.

  23. avatar jas says:

Haven’t we seen over these long years trying to build a decent defense how hard it seems to be to get good young players (cummings). If tangini thinks they need 4 QB’s so be it- and do we really care which kicker they keep-neither is “special”- so let’s just hope they don’t cut someone with a future instead of a roster filler. As for Beli remember he was 5-13 before Brady and a losing coach in Cleveland as well. We’ll see.

  24. avatar Larry Saunders says:

I am glad to hear the good news that I can now watch my two favorite players in the NFL! Favre and Feely!
Allright! Go Jay! Hey to Rebecca and kids! Love Ya

  25. avatar pat d says:

When your kicker can’t kick touchbacks then Mangini says we don’t want to kick touchbacks. If our kicker could kick touchbacks we would. Everyone by now should know that Mangini speaks double talk. He praises a player then the next day cuts him.

Nugent is automatic unless the game is on the line.

  26. avatar kjgracey says:

    feely’s a scumbag

  27. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

I’m not finding any information on this signing except Cimini’s article and an ESPN article citing Cimini. Did we sign Feely or are we waiting? If we did, who did we release/IR to make room?

  28. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

To add to my question, The Jets site does not list Feely on the roster and they’re usually quick on those transactions. Did we sign him or not?

  29. avatar redshotsy says:

they should have picked up Connor Barth who beat out Feely when the Chiefs were looking to sign him. Barth is big time just needs the opportunity.

  30. avatar redshotsy says:

it definately showed when Feely missed the FG attempt yesturday
