Jets Bring in Kickers — Not a Good Sign
Yesterday, the seemingly meticulous Jets looked a bit lost as Mike Nugent couldn’t play the entire game due to a leg injury. Although the Jets are mum so far, they’ve brought in some free agents that they might make roster offers to, depending on how things go with Nugent.
Word on the street is that the Jets are looking at kickers and are bringing in or have brought in Jay Feeley, Dave Rayner, and Aaron Elling.
Jay Feely — Recently had a bit of a mouth when talking about his former team the Phins didn’t last long with the Chiefs.
Dave Rayner — Rayner was drafted by the Colts in 2005, but didn’t last long and has bounced around a number of teams.
Aaron Elling — Elling is another journeyman, who was most recently with the Raiders.

Favre can call him a stupid kicker. Watching Clemens take practice kicks yesterday was funny.
Its official…Brady on IR.
not a GOOD sign….a GREAT sign!!
thanks evan … was waiting on news from foxboro.
I guess Feely would make the most sense, as he’s used to kicking at the Meadowlands.
yea i know feely has a mouth but we he is the best of the 3
I think it should be Feely until Nugent gets better. But with a leg injury, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is out 4 weeks. Who will the JETS cut to make room for Feely???
They should Ainge on IR to make room for Feely.
kc is right — Nugent has never been a great kicker –
I think it is a great sign. Maybe we finally rid ourselves of Huggies (I hope he takes his diaper with him). This personnel change is an essential and symbolic parting with the Bradway legacy.
Besides the fact that Huggies was horrific at kick offs, he was unreliable as a kicker.
I am too old to remember specific games where a Huggies miss forced a different strategy (and too overjoyed to feel any need to justify my glee).
But this is a good thing.
Next year, we will have a number of needs: a safety opposite Rhodes, a QB for the future (if as many suspect Kellen and Ratliff are not him), and some OL depth. We can add kicker to the mix. Big deal. At least WR, TE and CB, three areas of almost perpetual need, plus LB, are fixed.
If we can only avoid a major injury.

I posted this on a different thread because I didn’t notice this thread about Nugent:
I don’t agree with all the Nugent haters out there. He has been an effective, reliable kicker for us the last few years and if he is out for an extended period, it could be a big problem for us as any journeyman kicker they bring in is a journeyman for a reason – because they aren’t that good. It sucks that he got hurt but some of you are acting like it happened because he’s a bad kicker or wasn’t conditioned properly, which is ridiculous. It seems to me that many of you can’t get over the fact that Bradway made a mistake and drafted Nuge too early. I agree that 2nd round is too early to draft a kicker but you know what? Don’t blame Nugent! If you were a kicker and got signed in the 2nd round, would that be YOUR fault?? He may have been drafted too early but he is unquestionably (look at his FG % and also his kickoff range was acceptable last year) a good kicker, which we need on this team. All of you who are wishing we get rid of him, be careful what you hope for because if we do, we could end up with Jay Feely, who couldn’t stick with the team we beat yesterday.
Harlan, we don’t need a “symbolic parting with the Bradway era” we need to field the best team we can. Nugent is better than any kicker not currently signed to another roster. Bring in Feely or whoever to cover us while Nugent heals. He may look like he’s 15 but his kickoffs have dramatically improved since year 1, his FG% is good and he kicks off a mean onside kick – you’re not too old to remember that game, are you? :-)
Who should we cut.
Give me a break.
CUT NUGENT.
You cannot win with a lame kicker. Feely, who knows NY, could come in and play for a few weeks or prove to be more reliable than Nuge. As for who goes, you can’t fake an injury to get on IR, but you could risk cutting Ainge. Naturally, the Pats will pick him up and he will be their Super Bowl MVP.
Tish, you can IR anyone on the roster now and no other team can sign him. So Ainge would be protected.
And Parking… We don’t disagree about the need to field the best possible 53 players. We just disagree about whether Huggies is that.
I have been wrong about some players (our DE come to mind — both looked better with Pace and Jenkins playing). I MAY be wrong about Nuge. I just doubt it.

The Jets have to have a back up, their butt deep in TE’s, and WR’s, I don’t want to see any of them go, but the team cannot be in a position it was in Sunday. They need a backup in the event Nugent further agrivates the injury and were left having to try for 2 pt. plays or worse turning the ball over on 4th down.
Sign David Beckham
all im saying is its PRETTY SAD when you dont even feel CONFIDENT putting your field goal unit on the field from 40 yds out!! almost every other team has guys BOOTING from 50 PLUS on the REGULAR!!
In his 2007 season with the Jets, Nugent came into his own and showed that he was one of the better kickers in the NFL. He was an impressive 24 of 27 (88.9 percent) in field goal attempts and converted 35 of 35 extra point attempts. From 50 or more yards, he hit two out of three. Nugent has a slight disadvantage, having to play more than half of his games in cold weather, but that hasn’t stopped him from compiling an impressive field goal percentage in the NFL.
As usual when Johnny Styne tells us we need to get rid of a player because that player stinks…well the facts prove differently.
Add to that the improvement on distance on his kickoffs and you have what can be considered to be a good place kicker. At one point he had with the carryover from the previous season I think 26 FG in a row.

Oh by the way Harlan…the actual statistics also prove you to be way off base in your assessment of Nugent. Also what is this “Huggies” name you created for him?
Do you have cute little pet names for any other of our players as well?
JOHN HALL!!!!!
JetChick – great post, thanks for researching those stats.
Harlan, KC, Pat D, read JetChick’s post and you will see that you in fact are wrong about Nugent. He has good stats. What exactly is it you want out of a kicker if it isn’t 88.9% FG accuracy (including 2 of 3 from 50+ yards) and 100% accuracy on PATs? Yes, he was drafted WAAAY too high, but what’s done is done. Would you really have Feely, who couldn’t even make anyone’s roster? Ask yourself this: would you be so anti-Nugent if he was drafted in the 5th or 6th round? If not, Bradway’s mistake was years ago. Time to get over it.
PAT’s are a joke stat! If they are missed it’s because they are blocked! I’m not anti Nugent but i could care less to see him go. His kickoffs are better but still not great or consistent and the fact they only attempted 3 fg beyond 50 yards tells you he cant hit FG from that range! JOHN HALL!!!!
When was the last time a Jets kickoff has resulted in a touchback. There have been few and far in between with Nugent kicking. Field position is one of the more important factors in determining a game, and constant kickoffs to the 10/5 yd line cannot cut it every game. Yes his FG % has been good, but also take into account the times they do not attempt a FG because he doesnt have the leg. A bum leg does them no good.
Wow, the guy kicks at almost 90% accuracy and he has a bum leg. Only in NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only thing that really bothers me about Nugent is his inability to get touchbacks on kickoffs.
according to Cimini the Jets have signed Jay Feeley

Harlan: I won’t argue with you about a team being able to IR a player at this point even without an injury. The reason I won’t is that it would be consistent with the stupidity of having 53 guys work their asses off all week and then have only 45 of them active on Sunday. This inexplicable rule increases the chance of real injuries to those 45 who may be compelled into continuing to play in a game when injured, while a roster backup is forced to sit because of that moronic rule.
He has a bum leg now because he got injured on Sunday, not because of his inabilities.
With all due respect to Jetschick, Nugent was not that good last season and Feely, for instance, was better. In 2007, Nugent had 36 FGA and 29 FGM for a mediocre 80.6%. Plus, he missed 2 FGs of under 40 yards and missed a PAT. Feely, with the Fins last season had 23 FGA and 21 FGM for a 91.3% and did not miss a PAT or an FG under 40 yards. Also, kicking with the Giants, he never had less than an 83.3% rate, so he was better at Giants Stadium, on average, than Nugent. I don’t mean to bash Nugent, it’s just that, as I said before, kickers are fungible. I think Nugent has a lot of upside and if he ever gets his kickoffs deep, he’ll be a keeper. But, he’ll also never justify taking him in the 2nd round. That’s not his fault, but is the reality.
You beat me to it, SD99. Jetchick’s stats are from 2006, not 2007.
Sackdance…
I stand corrected . The stats I looked up were from the 06 season. I got them directly from http://www.kffl.com/article/73444/487. They are his numbers and are strong for that season. I understand the fate of kickers…they are as good as their last kick.
When I went back they were from 06 rather then 07. I could not locate the 07 stats, but I do remember quite clearly that Nugent had some sort of streak going for consecutive field goals inside the 50.
The life of a place kicker is tenuous at best, and this kid seems slightly better then average. I admire the work he has done to get kickoffs deeper, and even though he is a kicker…he is a character guy.
How about Mike Vanderjagt?
Is Nugent still a Jet?
John Hall. Boy he was sure a model of consistency! It was either hit or miss with him. Miss the short ones and make some long ones. His kickoffs were excellent until they changed the rule because of him.
There is a reason Jay Feely is unemployed. I like Nugent and he will be with the JETS a long time. So get used to seeing him for a long time.
Hermway cheaped out on John Hall — Enter Doug Brien –
JETS have signed Feely.
According to reports, Jay Feely is already a Jet –
look at the preseason game against Washington this year, that should have sent up a red flag. We need a kicker. Nugget is not it. Wasted 2nd rounder.
I doubt if Nugent is a Jet for long. Mangini looked pissed. When you get on Mangini’s $h!t !i$t you stay there.
