Tom Brady’s hurt… Now what?
Understandably, there’s a lot to digest from week 1 of the 2008 NFL season, particularly in the AFC East. The Jets’ nailbiter, the Bills’ blowout, and the Pats’… well, you know.
While there is certainly a great deal to discuss about the Green and White’s season opening win over the Dolphins — Dwight Lowery, Calvin Pace, Thomas Jones, Chansi Stuckey, and that #4 guy — I can’t help but look to the western edge of Massachusetts and wonder…
With Tom Brady seemingly out for next week’s home opener against the Patriots, or at best severly hobbled:
Should Jets fans expect to win next week against the Pats?
Expect to win, Patriots and Jets are not usually three words put together in that order, but Matt Cassell is not Tom Brady.
Now, I understand the paint is barely dry on your Jets schedule dry erase board, but the NFL is a week-to-week business and Miami’s done, it’s time to move on.
So, I’m asking you Jets fans, what do you think? Hypothetically speaking, do you think the Jets SHOULD win next week?

I think I read somewhere that Nugent injured his hamstring on a kickoff. If I were Mangini and wanted to compete with New England next week, replacement kickers will be brought in for tryouts ASAP,
Assuming one will be signed (hamstrings don’t usually heal in a week):
(1) Will Nugent go on IR?
(2) Will someone else go on IR (for example, Clooney…or maybe Aigne’s finger needs further rehab)?
(3) Would an eligible someone be moved to the practice squad with (whistling in the dark) hopes that they wouldn’t be snached up by another team?
(4) Who are the the likely kicking invitees…are any of them any good?
(5) Kicking an extra point doesn’t seem too much like rocket science. Since KC isn’t likely to have much playing time this year, why hasn’t he been practicing more as an emergency replacement during training camp instead of watching him bravely kick into a net on the sidelines but not later trotting out on the field to give it the old college try?
(6) Why has Mangini seemingly fallen down on not having an emergency extra-point kicker *ready to go* for situations like the Miami game? Can’t imagine every other team in the NFL has the same problem. But maybe I’m wrong.
i agree 110%!!
the jets are hosting a patriots team that barely fended off the lowly chiefs ( at foxboro!) and lost their supermodel-defiling qb. I’d be shocked if they’re not the vegas favorites. This is a winnable game. To lose would be a squandered opportunity.
I have watched the NE game last nigth and I must say that they looked as strong as ever even with their second QB.
their offensive line can keep the pocket forever and the JETS must improve 100% if they dream of beating them.
for me the main concern is defense. if the Fins scored 14 points (jets D let CP look ok eventhought they know his game better than anyone !) than I expect the patriots to score double.
can’t see us winning any future games without having someone to score the extra points…
I’d put it at Patriots -3. Really curious to see how they actually line it.
Last time I checked, Brady didn’t play defense. Favre will be tested severely.
I expect a close game and one in which the Jets must blitz even more than they usually do against the Pats. I see the Jets are -3 and I’m not sure why, even with Brady being highly doubtful if not out for the season.
jets were installed as 2.5 point favorites over the pats.
in answer to bassett, yes – the jets SHOULD win this game, but i don’t expect it. the logic center my brain says to expect it – the memory center says don’t.
corey’s post, brandon :)
I wish the Jets could have faced him, straight up next week, especially with this renewed pass rush … all the same, I’m no fool and if the this is the Jets opportunity to move past the Patriots (still a tough task with that defense) and fight off the Bills, then I am all for it.
I expect the Jets to win and here’s why.
A young QBs best friend is a running game. The Jets D did a good job of stopping the run. They should do the same against the Pats.
They will put the game on Cassell’s arm and inexperience to try win. I think our secondary has improved with Lowery enough to give us the edge, along with Pace to put pressure on the QB.
I think our offense will be able to run against NE and BF will give us enough fireworks to put the Pats away solidly.
I’m a predicting 24 – 13 Jets win.
yes
Fire Sutton. Same old lame duck defense in the 4th and along with conservative offense it almost cost us a game we dominated. The Pats and the Bills will not let that slide.
The Jets should not take this next game against NE lightly just because Brady wil not be there. One player does not make a team, they still have a good defense, and they can still run the ball. They will alter their schemes to suit Cassell’s strenghts, and will still be a dangerous team, maybe more so now that they have to circle the wagons.
I don’t know if Sutton needs to be fired but someone needs to re-think the “prevent” defense strategy especially against Pennington. As the 4th quarter went on the Jets D went more and more to a prevent D. Sure they came out with the win but as others noted this will not work against more talented and experienced teams. It makes one wonder the basic thinking on strategy. Why would you worry about Pennington making any long throws? Why not send massive blitz packages? Or at least keep the secondary up except for a safety or two. Oh and I am tired of the blown coverages by Eric Smith. We have heard a lot of talk of his potential but the on field results don’t show it. Let’s give Elam another shot or put Barrett or someone else back there. I don’t like to make predictions, but if the Jets can keep the Pats running game in check and Favre doesn’t throw 5 interceptions then Jets have a great chance of winning against the Brady-less Pats.
The Jets always play the Patriots to a tight game. It just seems like in the last few years, Brady has made a play late to beat us. I expect to win this week. Before the injury, I thought we would take one out of 2 from them, we home, we should win. There, I said it!!
