Last season, the crowd in the stadium was lost without him and I heard quite a few fans yell at people who tried to lead cheers as frauds. He brings a lot of excitement and I've seen our Jets rally when Fireman Ed spontaneously gets the crowd to cheer, like the '98 game against the Seahawks. The whole Jets team looked down, until the crowd started to basically will the Jets to victory. I took a friend to his first Jets game that day and even he said, "the crowd really saved the Jets today." "Fireman Ed" can rally the crowd like nobody else can. Now, to the symbol. "Fireman Ed" represents the blue-collar, lunch pail fan base that used to fill up Shea Stadium. We're not Giants fans, who have catered tailgates and light their cigars with $100 bills. We're Jets fans, a whole lot of whom were first-responders 7 years ago. So, even if "Fireman Ed" is a jerk personally, I like the idea that the guy who leads our cheers is one of the Bravest.
