Fred Smerlas: Jets Are ‘Frauds’
Fred Smerlas, Waltham, MA native, friend of Bill Belichick, and five-time Pro Bowl NT who played for the Bills, Niners and Patriots now spends his days as a football coach and part-time marbly mouthed radio guest during football season on Boston’s WEEI afternoon show, told Tim Graham of ESPN that
“The Jets are frauds. They barely beat Miami, a team that absolutely sucks. I’ve watched tape of [the Dolphins], and they’re in trouble. The Jets had a hard time with them. Brett Favre is going off the cuff in the huddle. Favre, that pass he threw [a 22-yard desperation lob to Chansi Stuckey] was a punt. It turned into a touchdown, and they win by six points.”
But we’ll neglect to mention that they didn’t have a kicker for basically a quarter of the game, and thus couldn’t get the seventh.
Also remember that the play was a 4th and 13 where they couldn’t kick the ball for a FG so it was better to chuck it than take the sack. Bottom line, the reversal of fortune was a big part of winning the game, but it was a smart play all the same.
Frauds? I can hear him saying it too … fraaahhhhds. Anyway, I guess we’ll find out today and next week whether the Jets are fraaahhhhds or not. I just think it’s a great time for him to start mouthing off about other teams that he’s clearly biased against. He does go on to say that he thinks the Bills are the real-deal, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves .. the Seahawks are a NFC West team, and decimiated with injuries.

IF anything, we’re “Frahhds” of being the same ‘ol, same ‘ol. If anything we’ll see who the real “frahhds” are today. Is it the system or the player? If the Pats win will it diminish Brady’s excellence as past MVP greatness? Will the NE Defense show up this week or will we see more toasting of the CB’s?

The advantage the Jets clearly have over the Patriots is at quarterback — Eric Mangini has already demonstrated a willingness to neutralize that advantage — That does not bode well for the Jets today –
apparently Fred saw no problem with NE only beating KC by 7 – a team has not won a game since October 2007
I wonder what he will think when his beloved Pats and the Fish have the same records during his next interview?

Smerlas is a big fat, annoying bully who makes WEEI unlistenable. I don’t know why anyone would even pay attention to what he has to say.

I guess someone didn’t remind him that his beloved Pats BARELY beat the CHIEFS who I will bet are a worse team than the Dolphins this year. A win is a win, you can’t take the W out of the loss column at the end of the day so why is he trying so hard? He is just really upset about Brady and is trying to rally the Pats up since he knows they will need a boost. And how dare he call that pass a “punt” from a guaranteed HOF and one of the best QB’s to ever live? Sure it was high and deep, but he didn’t just toss it, he was obviously looking for someone down there. If the Pats lose this game, I will bombard the Pats boards for 40 days and 40 nights.

I know it was an ugly win, but it does go in the W column, does it not. What you people dont understand, is that Bill Belichick’s ego is bigger that than you can imagine. Under no circumstances is he going to allow so S#ITBUM team try to prove the only reason he’s so great, is because of a quarterback. Nope, aint gonna happen. Good thing we technically have three teams in the NFL to fall back on. I’m putting my Farve jersey away and sporting my Manning jersey on Monday, that way I still look like a winner. If the Bills come close to the Patriots I will sport my Lynch jersey..
