Game Recap: Same Old, Same Old

by Andrew Weiss on September 14th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

Is anyone wondering if the Jets are there yet?  Let me save you from wondering.  They’re not!  The renaissance that will eventually transform what was last year a seriously flawed club with important parts missing, into a pretty talented, cohesive and complete Football team that can compete with the league’s elite, appears to be faintly visible this evening, but it is concealed by the league’s current elite who, er, play better than we do.

The New England Patriots won a victory today for the reason they’ve been winning for the past six or seven years.  They make fewer mistakes than their opponents and they execute, especially when they have to.

The Jets’ mistakes were, again, myriad.  Kicking was an abomination.  Jay Feely got started early on this dismal day of foot work with a missed 31 yard chip shot field goal in the first quarter that turned a splendid, 11 play 67 yard drive into sawdust.  After that, it was Ben Graham who followed up his merely awful punting last week with an even more terrible performance today.  On two consecutive 3 and outs by the not ready for prime time Jets’ offense, that seemed beset by mistakes and questionable play calling on a number of drives, Graham accomplished 55 yards—total for the two kicks.  But, those were good when you consider the net, fourteen yard-er in the third quarter with the game on the line.  Meanwhile, Jet field position was dismal by comparison.  Not one drive started beyond their own 25 yard line; seven drives started on the 20.

The first half was something of a slug fest.  If the Jets had executed, they’d have left the second quarter with a lead.  Instead, the break found the teams close with the Pats holding a slim, 6-3 lead.  Still, despite penalties, poor special teams play and horrendous kicking, the Jets were in the game.  All things being equal, it wasn’t so bad a place to be against the AFC champs.  Optimism flourished further when the Pats couldn’t get anything done on their first possession after the break giving up two sacks and losing three yards before punting.

That’s when the game turned—but not in our direction.  The offense, pressed by New England, got ragged.  When it got ragged, Brett Favre got creative.  When Brett got creative, he got sloppy and he tried to make an ill-advised pass.  Then, it was picked off.  With the Pats already in field goal range, they didn’t need a manual to know what to do.  They ground out a six play drive and punched the ball into the end zone for the game’s first touchdown.  In an instant, the deficit was ten points.

Good teams know what to do when they have a two score lead.  First, they stop the opposing team’s next drive.  The Pats stopped the next drive.  Then, they change their offensive philosophy to throw off the opposition.  Since they had passed much of the game, they ran.  The Jets were caught off guard.  The Pats enforced their advantage by using a fresh power back, the erstwhile Jet, Lamont Jordan, who seemed determined to humiliate the team that had let him get away.  The result, a field goal six minutes later and the lead was thirteen.

I take a brief interlude to bring you a hopeful note.  After the Pats’ field goal (made child’s play by starting on the Jets 39), the Jets received the ball on the, you know, 20 yard line.  What followed was the future.  Listen children and heed my words.  The new Jets (at least on offense) began with 17 seconds left of the third quarter on September 14, 2008.  What followed was a thing of perfect beauty: a ten play, five minute drive that spoke of nothing less than complete domination.  Brett Favre, meet the Jets.  NY Jets, meet Brett Favre.  If they can play a whole game like this drive, the future is indeed bright.

The Pats could still lose.  The Jets could overcome; down by 6, ten minutes to go.  All the Jets needed to do was stop the Pats’ offense.  There was plenty of time for another thing of beauty.

Unfortunately, the Jets were not ready for the future just yet.  Stop them they couldn’t.  The defense had run out of gas.

The day was hot and the Jets’ defense had been on the field for a lot of minutes, so it was up to the second string to pick up the slack.  Unfortunately, the team is still thin on high quality substitutes.  Nowhere was this more obvious than at the nose.  While Pouha is a serviceable player, he cannot clog the middle or simply upend the center as I saw Kris Jenkins do on two occasions.  In KJ’s absence, the mice could play.  The Pats knew it and they ran and ran and, eventually, ran the Jets out of the game.  It wasn’t just Pouha who couldn’t stop the Pats offense from running.  The Pats executed.  We didn’t.  We’ll learn.

The last Pats’ field goal didn’t end the Jets afternoon.  The Pats, though, knew what to do on defense when they had a lead: attack.  When Leon Johnson couldn’t pick up Adalius Thomas blitzing a minute later, the Jets’ afternoon was, for all intents and purposes, over.

I will leave silver linings to the experts at such things.  For me, it was a loss but not one that cost me much hope for the future.  I saw a lot I liked.  I still believe, as I did two weeks ago, that this transformation will take half a season.  We need to learn to adjust to all the new personnel, to dominate, and ultimately to win.  I think we’re making progress.  My glass is half full.

at least favre said after the game that he had fun isn’t that great!!!!!!!! wow, FAVRE HAD FUN …. big woop!

  2. avatar Rocky says:

The defense was very good in that game and they gave us every oppertunity to take over, if only the offense and special teams had been as producitve the whole game, it would have been a different result. Still if Brett didn’t throw that pick, Feely hit the FG, its a whole different game..just simple mistakes that need to be corrected. AND PENALTIES ARE KILLING US

  3. avatar kevin says:

Thanks now I can put the gun down now.

  4. avatar swizzle81 says:

In all seriousness, the 2 Jets, besides coaches, who have been the most disappointing have been Eric Smith and Ben Graham. Smith has shown nothing of starting material in the NFL and Graham has been down right awful. Coles had 2 drops, again, today. Way too many penalties and mental mistakes. When the Jets finally opened up the offense, they scored a TD, what a novel idea Schottenheimer. With that said, the Jets still have 14 games left, an easy second half schedule. This monday night game will tell a tale, SD is 0-2, the Jets blew a chance against the Pats and will be traveling cross country for a primetime game against a team that should be 1-1 and not as angry, thank you Ed Hochuli.

  5. avatar TOON2388 says:

lets stay positive. I remember being 0-3 in 1981 and finishing 10-5-1

  6. avatar Rocky says:

btw wtf is up with these draws on 3rd and long THEY NEVER WORK…same thing with these dump off passes to leon washington, i would rather see brett stretch the field then these dink and dunk passes that arent reliable to move the chains.

  7. avatar hank/naples says:

    john i:

Isn’t that what you would expect a gunslinger to say after he comes out of a duel barely alive ?

  8. avatar Gang green says:

Haha positive ya sure, this was a pathetic performance mangini needs to go along with martys son (our very conservative o coordinator) When you were having success in the air why not continue? No but he had to try and establish a running game. For those who blame the officiating are naive , you should have watched the broncos chargers game. FIRE MANGINI

  9. avatar eli says:

So the Jets spend a ton on free agents acquire Favre and the Pats lose Brady and they still cant beat the Patriots on their own turf?!?!? This is a pathetic coaching staff that has no clue how to game plan. The Jets were simply OUT COACHED in ever facet. If they cant beat them now how the **** are they going to beat them when Favre retires and Brady comes back?

  10. avatar Gang green says:

Brett has a free pass we brought him to a loosing team and a team who was going to be 4-12 at best under the chad regime, yeah he can have all the fun he wants as long as they allow him to “throw the damn ball” in the words of a famous ex jet

  11. avatar Rambo says:

From my cursory review of the game, Favre didn’t seem comfortable with the routes as he seemed to go for the short ball more often than not. I feel like once he really gets the playbook down, we will take off. He still seems tentative as to where he is going with it before eventually dumping it to a crossing route or comeback route.

  12. avatar Kyle says:

To me the the Jets are a big kid, who’s father went out and bought him a bunch of toys he doesn’t want to play with.

    Dustin Keller.
    Bubba Franks.
    Chris Baker.
    Chansi Stucky
    Coles.
    Cotchery
    Jones
    Washington
    Brad SMith

Are you telling me you can’t get these guys in the game? You can’t devise gameplans centered around every single one of these players? Use what you have, and stop running Jones up in the middle in short yardage, he has no burst, and he isn’t strong either.

  13. avatar Gang green says:

Honestly who are we kidding do you really think brett farve one of the greatest qbs respects this coaching staff which has proved nothing rather than they suck. The play hail mary play in miami was a broken play its not thats hes tentative his hands are basically tied, they would rather have thomas jones a mediocre back at best run it three straight times near the goal line into one of the best run stuffing lines in football.

  14. avatar ramble914 says:

Why did we bring in BF if all we’re gonna do is these stupid dump offs and passes to the flats? We could have done just fine with Chad for this type of offense. We constantly had 3rd and lond and did nothing to stretch the field.

The only bright spot was the Defense.

  15. avatar Kyle says:

It’s only a matter of time before Brett Favre starts running the show, and calling his own plays. This play calling isn’t gonna fly, wether Mangini likes it or not.

Consider Schottenheimer’s job on the line.

  16. avatar Gang green says:

just like with isiah thomas and Willie randolph , when the coach of your team is not cutting it its time to go , 15-19 doesn’t cut it mangini ,

  17. avatar Ed L says:

its only week 2 guys….remember that there is a lot of season left… i have been too excited about this year to let one game ruin it…

there is a lot of football left to be played….

  18. avatar RK says:

There are positives in the game but it was a comedy of errors too.

With all the under-throws and drops, kicking gaffs, penalties, there was no call on pass interference but one went against us (I think they both should have been no calls if anything but the one in the EZ was more contact than just a hand), pass protection broke down and little Leon is not stopping A. Thomas. but…

I think the run game looked clearly better than last year. Jets are 1-1 and had chances to score on NE so it may have looked different with some calls and plays going their way.

The Jets D and O were on the field approx. the same amount of time, the rush yards were identical for both teams and the passing yards NE had only 4 yards on the Jets, they had 3 sacks (last year 0 after 2 games; now they have 7 on they year).

It looked to me like they should have won but the outcome says it all. NE is still a tight team – I was hoping the QB would cough it up but since he didn’t the game was more in reach so he still had an overall negative impact.

  19. avatar Gang green says:

Ed we couldnt beat a tom brady less demoralized patriots team in our own turf , let a qb who never started a game since high school beat us , yeah I think its time to start asking questions. We beat miami a plain terrible team by the skin of our teeth, yes our defense is great but if we keep on the field for that long even they will look like a pee wee flag football team. We paid all that money to sure up that offensive line let them protect brett, thats why we brought him here isnt it?

  20. avatar subwayfare says:

I was on the field during warmups and it felt like it was 200 degrees. Favre looked drained from the get-go. The offense is clearly not yet running smoothly and the result is inconsistency – great plays followed by poor route running, drops, missed blocks and bad penalties. The pats were behind in total yards all game but got all the right ones. If this work in progress offense actually begins coming together in a timely fashion, there’s hope. But it better be very timely.

The D played well enough to win. The secondary was solid – Revis recovered in the nick of time the one time Moss had him beat – and the Pats couldn’t run the ball at all until the game was all but over. Jenkins earned his check, holding the point of attack and sometimes blowing into the backfield but you knew he couldn’t do it all game long in that heat. They got good pressure on the QB at times but got burned on some screens and dump offs. I think he’s the Prince Of Darkness but give BB credit. He found a way to win when the Jets erratic offense and terrible special teams play kept leaving the door open for him.

  21. avatar Gang green says:

People give Eric Mangini way too much credit what has he proven in his term with the jets other than getting us a one and out in the 1st round courtesy of you guessed it the pats. Our defense is solid but game management is key to winning games and we saw mangenious and his cronies blow another game

  22. avatar The Original Tim says:

Not calling for anyone’s head after only week 2, but…the coaching staff really got exposed today IMO. When you have a player of BF’s talents, you adjust the offense to his strengths, not the other way around. Favre’s talents and attributes are proven, this coaching staff’s “system” is far from it. Lets hope the staff starts adjusting the playbook, because honestly, with few exceptions today, other than a little extra zip on the ball, it may has well have been Pennington back there because the playbook and gameplan was all the same. Hold on to your seats though, because another big test is coming up next week…

  23. avatar hank/naples says:

    Kyle:

I had a great Idea and I’ll repeat it and see how you like it:

Lets fire Mangini and make Farve manager and QB so he can run the team from the field. What do you think ? I think one Pennington hater on this blog would would just love to see it. and this way it would eliminate another of our favorite pet scape goat.

  24. avatar Nikolas says:

Jets fans do not panic yet..enjoy..this is only the 2nd game of the season..it is close ..just correctable mistakes and errors..see at the bright side…the improvements..look at TannyTitle who buys you candy all the time..I know he is a pervert but you like it.

  25. avatar Gang green says:

Subway the team as you said was sloppy whose job is it to get the team ready and disciplined for the game? Tennenbaum and Woddy have spent the money and brought in quality players even thought it probably was to save mangini and tennens jobs so they can open up the new stadium. As a long suffering Jets fan who still has a hole in his wall thanks to doug brien , coaching is vital just as much as the personnel to use it , cotchery , coles, three receiving tes baker, keller and franks as well as young budding wrs like brad smith and stuckey and favre has 188 yards come on. Sean Ellis throwing his helmet at end of the game said it all, no one respects mr stoic “mangini”

  26. avatar hank/naples says:

    PS.

Come to think about it, someone suggested that we also fire our OC Shotty. We now have Farve. We don’t need anyone else to ruin his show, right?

  27. avatar Gang green says:

hank i have no idea what game you were watching or if you are even a jets fan ?Chad was benched today by the MIAMI DOLPHINS. So how about this you can call up ur buddy mangenious and tell him that chad and his dumbo ears is no longer the qb of the jets, its favre so tell ur buddy martys son to let brett throw

  28. avatar Nikolas says:

I had posted back in late , that after the coming horrific dysfanctional Favre show MANGINI would be the scapegoat, but I did not expect it to be that soon…common guys by the second game?

Well, I will say something which I beleive can give to this team life. Bench Favre…the guy improvizes all the time, he has no idea what he is doing and bring in Clemens. At least we will have an idea what Clemens is made of by the end of the season.
Clemens wiull have more command of this offense and the TEAM chemistry will be much improved.

  29. avatar Nikolas says:

Gang Green you are a confused man my friend..you sound worst than Favre’s play calling.

  30. avatar Nelson says:

HA-HA-HA-HA YOU FUC#ING LOSERS. suck on this one for a while. if i were you, i would move a couple hundred miles away from home, so i could legitimately cheer for a different team. later douches!!

  31. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

First of all, having spent 9 hours of my life today, travelling to and from the game, tailgating in god awful heat, and then watching a god awful performance by the JETS coaching staff, I have spent my last day going to a JETS game. And for this effort you will get higher ticket prices in 2009 and 2010 from the JETS to line Woody’s pockets.

From someone who recognized that Hermie Edwards was god awful and started the “Hermie Must GO” slogan way before anyone realized he should go, I am now starting the “MANGINI MUST GO” slogan. Why? This team is unprepared. A basic requirement of a head coach is to make sure his team is well prepared. It was bad enough last week that they had no plan for a back up for Nugent (Kick offs, extra points or FGs) which almost cost the JETS a win. This week there were three times (twice on Defense) the JETS had 12 men on the field and at least once they had 10. BAD COACHING! Then a missed FG by Feely (please bring back Nugent quickly!) Numerous bad punts by Ben Graham (PLEASE CUT HIM) which gave us terrible field position all day. And then from the Pats 3, we run the ball 3 times and lose 1 yard and have to settle for a FG instead of a TD. What did we get Brett Favre if we are not going to use his arm. Sutton is terrible, Schott is too conservative and Mangini doesn’t have a clue.
So I have officially started the “MANGINI MUST GO!” slogan.

  32. avatar John says:

Man do I hate that pr**k Belechick. He is such a smug SOB. This team better get better in a hurry. If they keep holding Farve back, there is no way he will stay past this year. LC better get his act together. It almost looks like he is tanking plays on purpose.

  33. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

I posted my comments on the game thread, but I’d also like to add that we can see teams booting kickoffs out of the endzone and punts out of bounds more often after this game. Schottenheimer’s offense is built on the field position from our returners, and BB knew it because he’s been burned by it in the past, so I believe he gameplanned that out of the game.

  34. avatar Nikolas says:

    Editor….too little too late…

  35. avatar Joe S says:

Everyone calm down. After the bye week you will finally see the Jets team we’ve all been waiting for. Farve has been here for a month and has no chemistry with Coles yet. I for one am dissappointed with te missed opportunity but I am also fully confident in this team. Think about this there are four new offensive starters and three new defensive starters if you didnt think there was going to be some growing pains than you dont know football. This team will only get better as the year goes on and the Patriots are only going to say the same. The Jets dont play the Patriots again until week 11 and they dont play the Bills until week 9. Those are both well after the week 5 bye. Trust me this team will be fine. My guess is 12-4 or 11-5.

  36. avatar subwayfare says:

    Gang Green-

I guess I’m just more of a realist. I expected it would take time for Favre and the existing offense, players, coaching staff, etc. to mesh and that’s what we’re seeing. Is part of that meshing Mangini and Schott adjusting to what they have? Absolutely. It’s a work in progress. Anyone who believed differently was kidding themselves. I still think signing Favre made sense – if only to move on from Pennington – and believe the product will improve over time. A lot faster than it would by replacing the entire coaching staff in the month of September.

  37. avatar Matt C says:

Plain and simple, this game was won and lost by special teams and field position. Both defenses played great, bother offenses played terribly. The HUGE edge goes to the Pats for their special teams not letting the Jets sniff outside their own 30 yard line. Westhoff might be a great coach, but we need 2 guys who can kick

  38. avatar Nikolas says:

The problem of this Team is the most important position in football…that is QB. Favre has no idea what he is doing. I do not give a blip if he can throw the ball 50 yards..the whole offense looks dysfanctional. Bench him and start Clemens. Mangini is a secondary problem.

Chemistry, team, chemistry, team, chemistry, team….this is what the PATsies proved to you..Jets Fans. They do not even need Brady and they will not even make the playoffs, but they are good enough against a dysfanctional team!!

  39. avatar Nikolas says:

Subwayfare..you are so cute…you were for Favre because you were against Chad? Man….you are messed up.

  40. avatar Former Packers Fan says:

1st and goal from the 3 yard line and three lame running plays! Hasn’t the coaching staff seen the two decades of footage of what Brett Favre can do with the ball that deep in the “red zone”!!!! 3 points should have been 7. Also, a team with as many penalties as the Jets had is poorly coached. Where is the discipline of working like a unit?? The receivers will learn to catch Favre’s passes eventually. And, hopefully the kicking/punting game will improve – either by experience or trade!! Cheer up Jets fans – the invicible Patriots didn’t look so invincible! Give Brett more time to take control of the offense and the points will multiply! BTW – Brett is at his best when he’s “having fun”!

  41. avatar eli says:

Mangini always says he is game plan specific and coaches to the opponent. Can one of you beat reporter ask him what the game plan was? Cause from my perspective it seemed to be play conservative and make sure its close at the end. My point is that was Bill’s game plan!!! Why not try to beat down the pats with a high flying offense knowing Cassel wouldn’t be able to bring his team back or keep up with us? No the Mangidiot thinks oh I know lets copy what we know their going to do and then maybe we can eek it out at the end? oh joy!!! You know last year Mangidiot complained that all their losses were close, Well du if you dont try to take it to a team but instead play it close to the vest theres a chance you will lose and keep on losing!!

  42. avatar Johnny Styne says:

With Brady out, LaMont Jordan may very well be the Patriots’ MVP this season — He showed more today than Thomas Jones has ever shown as a Jet –

  43. avatar dakar says:

i have to be the most foolish football fan in the world to have thought the jets could beat the paties…hell,i thought we could have beaten them with brady…the way we played…i dont think we have what it will take to beat buffalo…we got favre to open up the offense but yet i saw the same offense we ran with chad…we couldn’t even move the ball…how many 3 and outs did we have on offense…how many times we couldn’t stop them from getting 1st downs…yea they didn’t score alot of points but neither did we…we need to replace our kickers,OC and DC…period…we will never win anything until we beat the paties…plain and simple…i have never liked or respected bellachick since he quit on us…but i tell you…he has my respect now and they are the team to beat…with or without brady…just my thoughts…

  44. avatar Johnny Styne says:

Yes, Pennington was benched today in Week 2 by the Fish — It took the Jets more than half the season to bench him last year –

  45. avatar subwayfare says:

    Nikolas-

I’m a grown man. I don’t manifest emotional attachments to any professional athlete. I am not for or against either player. What I am for is a pragmatic approach to improving the team by whatever means available. It’s my opinion that Favre gives any team a better chance to win over the course of a season and in the playoffs than Chad Pennington. It has also always been my opinion that the adjustment would be rocky in the early going. It is and I’m not whining about it.

  46. avatar Eric says:

I can’t believe what I am reading… You all know Favre has been on the Jets for a little over a month, right? You know that, in total, we have 3 important new starters on offense, and 3 new starters on defense as well, right? Favre probably feels comfortable running about 1/4 of the playbook. Today, I know all about Cassel making his first start, but the Pats defense is still excellent, and Cassel has been in this system for 4 years. The Patriots are a well oiled machine.

They aren’t “holding Favre back”, but they can’t run every play because he doesn’t know every play. Even the plays he does run you can TELL he’s not comfortable, as evidenced by the happy feet and the scrambling to find open receivers.

I think you all need to be a little more patient, as Andrew Weiss so nicely put in his blog. This team is a work in progress, but we have seen flashes of what it can be, and for that, I am excited.

  47. avatar jetchick says:

Living in Florida I am forced to visit sports bars to see games not on national TV. As luck would have it I was the only Jet fan and was surrounded by no less then 20 NE fans.

It was a long miserable afternoon. We weren’t out played we were out coached, and made far to many mistakes. Our kicking game gave away field position all day, missed another chip shop and failed to score a TD from 2 yards out on 3 attempts…up the middle that lost 3 yards. I though we had Favre at QB a guy that exploits the end zone like republicans exploit working class people. We had every chance to win and lost.

By the way LC was by far our leading receiver today…and yes he had 2 drops. He needs to make those catches and will…he is our best receiver. I don’t think he was thinking much about Chad today….but Johnny Styne who condemns Coles for his unwillingness to forget his best friend proved in his most recent post that he still needs to talk about and bash Chad every chance he gets.

Our 2 first round picks were invisible again with the exception of 1 reception by Keller. We never made a move for McFadden or even Ryan, nor did we move up for Jay Cutler 2 years ago….moves we might regret later on.

The smug NE fans rubbed it in pretty well and all bid me farewell with that smug BB grin that made me feel ill.

We are a far better team then last year with growing pains and will as the season progress get where we need to be.

  48. avatar Drew says:

As upsetting a loss as today was the Jets can still do some damage this year. Every Jet fan would have signed for 2-2 by the bye week with the hopes of being 3-1. Our QB is still learning the offense and the D played well until the ran out of gas and had to tackle a fresh Jordan in the 4th. Play calling was suspect and the Favre pick hurt but when our special teams play this poorly we were dead. How B Graham still has a career is amazing. The PAas were on a short filed all day.

  49. avatar kd bart says:

Not ready to panic. Afterall, the 1998 Jets started 0-2 and 1-3. Looking back at the game, field position had a lot to do with the outcome of thegame. Which points out the lousy game Graham had. punting the ball I don’t believe the Jets started one drive beyond their own 25. The Pats got 13 points off drives that started at the Jet 31 (TO), Jet 39, and the Jet 48. On those drives they only had to moved the ball 31, 29, and 30 yards to score. Overall, the Pats started five drives inside Jet territory in the game.

  50. avatar kc says:

I CANT BELIEVE all the CRAP im reading!! YES,it was a BAD loss…are there any GOOD ones!!?? the fact that we lost to the PATSIES and BELICHEAT make it even TOUGHER to swallow. that being said it was only our FIRST LOSS of the season!! did ANY of you think we were gonna go UNDEFEATED or SOMETHING!!?? im SURE when ALL of you looked at the schedule and predicted we were gonna be 10-6,11-5,12-4 one of those LOSSES were gonna be against the PATRIOTS!! its just TOO EARLY for everyone to start PANICKING and calling for people to get FIRED or TRADED. our FIRST drive was executed perfectly….we looked like we were gonna move the ball AT WILL,just to have ANOTHER FIELD GOAL MISS!! it seemed that that MISS TOTALLY DEFLATED US!! Ben Graham was ABSOLUTELY HORENDOUS ALL DAY! we gave them AWESOME FIELD POSITION the ENTIRE GAME because of it!! our DEFENSE was BY FAR our BRIGHT SPOT,except for letting lamont jordan run all over us that last quarter and kill the clock. but they were EXAUSTED from being out there ALL day. COLES,who ACTUALLY LED our team in recieving and yards had a couple BIG DROPS right through his hands that would have given us first downs. how the hell does COTCHERY only have ONE BALL THROWN HIS WAY!!?? Leon Washington was UNDERUTILIZED AGAIN after tearing it up on the first drive! why did we get away from that?? ALL in ALL i can go ON and ON about todays game, but the bottom line is we GOT ONE loss! its not the end of the world and we WILL get BETTER! ROME wasnt built in a DAY!

  51. avatar Weeb Ewbank says:

I smell a 8-8 performance, ughh. However at least once Brett leaves I have liked what I’ve seen from Brett Ratliff moving forward and maybe we can pick up a stud WR to replace Coles who obviously has quit on this team.

  52. avatar OG Matt says:

The offensive game plan and play calling were HORRENDOUS. We are being outcoached on the offensive side of the ball and we are not prepared as a team. Too many mental penalties. This team is distracted by all the hooplah surrounding all the offseason moves. Mangini better get this team straightened out or this will be an expensive lesson.

  53. avatar pat d says:

    Matt C
You are correct – special teams and feild position was the difference in the game.

As far as the offense goes Farve not knowing the playbook is not the problem. The problem is the playbook.

  54. avatar sjfalcon2001 says:

    kc,
Yes it is one loss, but it was a bad loss. And it’s not a bad loss just because it was the Patriots. It’s a bad loss because we did it to ourselves. I would be able to handle a game where we fought hard on every down, even if we lost with Favre’s interception. The problem is that we were undisciplined and it cost us. We got to 3rd down situations far too often in the first half because of stupid penalties that cost us yardage. Our defense committed stupid penalties too. Graham could not punt out of our half of the field. And of course, Coles dropped very catchable balls in key situations. And our coaching staff was too conservative. If they don’t start to open up this offense in the red zone and at the close of games, it will be a very long season.

OG matt and others are right on…

the 3 runs from first and goal from the 3….. and other assorted F-ups from the coaches are getting quite annoying.

our kicking game BLOWS…. the whole australian rules kicker is unique crap has certainly worn off…time to get rid of him.

Pat d…right on….schott is not a good play caller…he has no feel for the game at all…

such a loser like his father….

Are you all the same cupcake fans that boasted about how badly the pats would lose the past week? Don’t bother answering, we’ll save you some dignity.

  58. avatar Jason says:

Its kinda pathetic that the Jet’s vs Pats rivalry has come to this, Pats fans spend their time reading Colts blogs, and Jet fans spend their time making excuses… I had hoped your traitorous coach would have given you guys at least a heart beat… man your as pathetic as your team. Its to bad there is no triple A teams in the NFL eh? ..would have saved you all from this public embarrassment you’ve had to deal with over the years. Get a clue, your team sucks, you barely beat MIAMI last week… and you still have the ignorance to post how you’ll take out the Pats all week on the blogs?? Get a life and a clue. Since this blog is filtered to the pampered I’m sure no one will have the privilege to read this.

  59. avatar eli says:

Oh Jason GET A CLUE!!!!! You make it sound like the Pats destroyed the Jets. Oh it was 6-3 at the half and one stop away from the jets driving for the win. Why dont you get off your high horse and get back down to earth. This was more of a Jets beating themselves with Special teams and penalties then anything the Pats did. Next time the Jets face them they may not even have a winning record. I dont see The Pats beating any good team that has a clue how to game.plan.

  60. avatar Hatman013 says:

Right, reader since June, but have just now felt compelled to contribute…

Anyway, 1) What’s up with Mangini’s uber-conservative play calling? (e.g. draw plays on 3rd and long as someone mentioned earlier in the thread)….this is the same nonsense that screwed us last year. In an acronymn…WTF?!?!?! You have Brett Frigging Favre and you’re taking it cautious? What is wrong with you?! It makes me sad to be a Jets fan, no joke.

    2) God I hate Jay Feeley, that just needed to be said

  61. avatar Najy says:

Revis is one of the top 5 corners in the league…PERIOD!!!

Our defense looked really good, especially at the beginning of the game but they were killed and deflated by bad field position and the 3 and outs by our offense. Our offense’s inability to sustain drives and stay on the field ultimately led to the demise of our D at the end of the game. Plus, they were unable to run the ball on our base D so they started spreading us out from the shot gun formation and handing it off to Lamont. The Jets never adjusted to that at the in the 4th. The pats must have uncovered a weakness in our D when they were in the shotgun formation because they ran the same play about 10x in a row. A stupid hand off….

As far as everyone saying that the Jets are undisciplined because of too many penalties, look no further than last year. The Jets were the second LEAST penalized team in the NFL. In total, the Jets had a whopping 63 penalties, 4 more than the league low of 59. To me, that says that there is penalties and confusion due to all the new players and the coaching staff getting adjusted and being on the same page. It takes time but the Jets under Managini have been very disciplined in that aspect.

As far as offense play calling, I was never a big fan of Schott. .. his play calling is terrible and way to predictable. I think one of the announcer in the game pointed out that the Jets ran the ball every time on first down last week against the Dolphins… Ask yourself, if the announcer was able to notice that stat, what do you think Belicheck has uncovered from looking at tape and tendencies??

Chad Penn can run this offense more efficiently that Brett, but we didnt bring Brett to be effecient. Correct me if I am wrong, but the Jets brought Brett to be Brett. To make plays and take shots downfield. To be able to stretch the D and open up the running game. The Jets brought Brett in to do what he has done for the last 15+ years. To WIN!!

Its too early to tell if the coaching is just holding Favre back because he is still not comfortable with the Offense or because our coaching staff sucks that much. That is yet to be determined but stay tuned. I will give the coaching staff a pass for another month and let them use that as an excuse. I hope that is the reason for a lackluster offense because it sure isnt that we dont have talent. There is plenty of talent across the board on O but lets just say that its because we havent “built chemistry” yet on offense. For now…

I attribute this loss to our special teams and bad field position because of our special teams. It wasnt even the whole team, it was our stupid kickers. Missed field goal and terrible punting. Ben Graham needs to be cut after his performance today because he single handedly was giving points to the Patriots. He was terrible last year and I have no idea why they didnt go out and find another punter. To me, that is bad coaching. Punting was a huge weakness last year and we didnt address that effectively this off season. Punters and kickers are taken for granted sometimes but they are key to winning. Cut Ben Graham today.

Our D didnt lose the game for us. Our offense didnt win the game. Our special teams cost us big time today. Offensive play calling needs much improvement. Schott needs to grow some balls and start becoming a little more aggressive. I am not going to question any play because its all part of the gameplan BUT i will question the gameplan. That needs to become more aggressive, FAST…

All n all.. it was simply frustrating. Much like other Jets fans, I have been waiting for today since our meeting with the Pats last year and it was very disappointing for us to lose. However, I dont think anyone planned to go undefeated this year. It wasnt like we werent going to lose and its just 1 game and it shouldnt define our entire season. We still have a ton of new players and I am very optimistic about the potential of the Jets. It was a tough loss to swallow but it only counts as 1 game.

One win next week on prime time will be the perfect remedy for this loss.

  62. avatar eli says:

Hatman The reason for that run play was because Mangini didn’t think Pennington could score a touchdown with less then two minutes with no time outs. If they were playing the colts I bet you anything they go for it. As for their game plan this week supposedly its opponent specific. Mangeni knew the Pats would be conservative and try to beat them on defense by getting int. So what does Magini do? decides to be conservative and copy the Pats game plan playing to their strength. Its just a function of Mangeni being out coached AGAIN by BB.

  63. avatar Najy says:

I cant sleep and I cant turn ESPN off… I cant believe that we lost to the damn Pats again. It is so frustrating but there day will come.

    Hi Bassett

watched the game till 2:00 am local ME time…

one thing on my mind – this is a badly coached team !

i’m so so disapointed. you have BF as your QB yet you prefer running instead of passing at 1/2/3 and goal.
you put a lot of pressure on Patriot’s pocket yet you can’t cover the middle of the field.
    run protection do not exist
how hard is it to draft another normal kicker/punter over the years???
how about using baker/keller a bit more?
and again poor penalties, bad use of the clock and more and more…

I hate to bitch and cry but this game was OURS !!!

  65. avatar James in TN says:

Coles has no heart, cut him trade him or bench him. Mangini has no courage to call a wide open offensive game. Shotty has no Brains on Offense Play design. Ben Graham just wants to go back to Australia or wherevever lame punters go. Tannenbaum is the Wizard who put the “pieces in place”. Am I wrong here or do we need another book to base our team on? I am dreading the Chargers. Cothchery got robbed by the officials FYI. Different year, Same story.

  66. avatar ddh says:

theres no consistency on offense, a good drive is followed by three and outs, while they find a rhythm, they cant maintain it, I suspect poor play calling first ,(seems to lack vision, big picture wise), untimely penalties( if any are), but a conservative approach that doesnt allow them to play any better than their opponents, maybe thats what mangini means by a game plan thats game specific, adjust yourself to play no better than your opponent. I saw a lot of positives, though, most all the negatives fell on the special teams, punting, kicking,(ignored problems from last year) and surprisingly p/k returns. while it is a work in progress, I fear the players will hit a ceiling(performance wise) without better input from the coaching staff. Between punting, kicking, and coaching, I see no improvement over last year and the results cant be any different, 2+2 still equals 4 !

  67. avatar RS says:

I suppose I can’t complain too much as to how the Jets played, I’m just mad that the offense and defense could not keep things consistent even with the addition of all these great players they still need to learn to keep consistency… On a side note I was impressed with Chansi Stuckey, two TD’s in a row he might be emerging as a top reciever next to Cotchery although Coles did stetp up these week some. Should be an interesting one against San Diego Monday night.

  68. avatar RS says:

And let’s hope Jay Feely makes a 31 yard FG next time he is up.

  69. avatar david i says:

The team will continue to get better and better every week, but….a big but, the penalties have to STOP, special teams need to improve and Shotty has to have better game plans and play calling. I thought the Pats game plan to use the short passes run on angles was brialliant, versus Shotty’s longer developing outs and ups. The three runs on the 1st and goal was abominable when you have Favre behind center. Watching D’Brick get manhandled and Seymour blowing up the play on that third down run was just terrible. Like the end of the Dolphin game, you have to give him a chance to throw it. Our running game is better, but not good enough in obvious run situations.

On a positive, the front seven (starting front seven) look awesome. So do the corners and Rhodes. Our weakest link is Eric Smith. Last week’s coverage blown on the TD and this week, he seemed to be getting bowled over by Lamont Jordan on every one of his 8 yard runs. However, Jenking is a monster, Pace and Thomas continue to impress. Harris and Barton seemed to get caught in the wash a bit yesterday when Jenkins was out, but overall, besides Pouha getting pushed around when he had to releive Jenkins and Jordan ran at will, they shut the run down cold.

  70. avatar Pete57 says:

No doubt the Jets have issues to work out, but that was to be expected. It’s only week 2. Everyone needs to calm down. All the negatives were stated so how about a few positives? With horroble field position all day, we did move the ball against one of the best defenses in the league. With horrible field position, we kept their offense to mostly field goals. In the first 3 quarters we did a very good job against the run. Let’s hope everyone came out of the game healthy and prepare for Sna Diego who is going to be very fired up next Monday.

As a side not to Jetchick: Why the bashing of the Republicans? They’re to blame for everything? Please consider 2 things:

    1. The congress is controlled by the democrats, which has more power to change things than the president. How are they doing? Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refuses to even let congress vote on drilling for oil. She states that the reason is because drilling wouldn’t help. Are you kidding? Who is she? Let the congress vote, the people want more energy options. Everyone knows her biggest constituancy is the Environmental lobby and that’s why she won’t allow a vote.

    2. Neither of the party’s are good. Unfortuanately most politicians do not care to work for the people.

  71. avatar Fenn says:

Guys, let’s be honest here. I’m a Pats fan and they did not blow you guys out. I do love reading how some of the other Pats fans rip into you on these blogs for thinking so assuredly the Pats we’re definitely more than likely going to lose. That’s for sure haha.

Mangina’s (can’t help it) play-calling definitely sucked. That’s because he is not a great coach and you all know that by now. Three straight runs??? With Brett Favre from the 3 yd line?? Forget his age, you take a high school sophomore or Brett when he’s 49 and you gotta call at least one pass. It looked pretty easy when they threw it to Stuckey. You have to throw once or at least spread the field and call a draw on one run.

Also you can’t tell me the Defense was a bright spot for you guys. There’s no way. The Pats were held to 4 FGs in the Red zone by the Jets Defense. That’s great Red Zone Defense. Read it again though.

Four FGs in the Red Zone. How do you call it good defense when Matt Cassell drives the team down the field 4 times into the Red Zone? The one time they started at the Jets 30 was after the Interception and the Pats scored their only TD.

If the defense played this way and it was week 7 Matty Cassell finishes 2 of those 4 Red Zone trips for TDs. 27-10 final score. Granted it’s not week 7 and the Jets D will prob be better as the season goes on like any decent team. However you guys looked weak. MC’s first start and he drove down the field all day. You knew he wasn’t going to come out 5 wide in his first start! Cover the short passing game better for crying out loud. Make a halftime adjustment. Oh wait, Mangini is your coach… nevermind.

Do any of you care to predict the score if Brady played this game??

ohh and MC underthrew Captain (lol) Randy badly. I can’t really say that’s bad D though because it is Moss.

    Good Luck against SD.

  72. avatar MikeRock says:

What a snoozer. New England couldn’t find the end zone and the Jets were trying to establish a running game against a great front line. The Jet offense is beyond predictable. I am glad Brett enjoyed himself, but most fans cannot deal with the crappy special teams and inept offense. With an innovative QB like Favre they chose to run Jones three plays up the middle on first and goal at the one????? Mangini and this coaching staff is atrocious. This is like Bruce Coslet all over again-a decent defense with horrendous offense. Too many dumb penalties as well… I haven’t given up hope-I never had any.

  73. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Everyone seems to be blaming the coaches. What game did you watch? Did Mangini throw the ball two yards past the line of scrimage when Coles was open before he got there? Who wouldn’t think a 130 million dollar left side of an offensive line couldn’t punch in the ball in 3 plays from the 3. Favre should have been picked off twice (I give cotchery a lot of credit for the offensive pass interference), What a waste of a draft pick. Warm up Ratliff and Clemens. For the first time i wish we drafted Cutler. That is nothing against Dbrickshaw. Just the QB situation. Favre has been washed up for years. Have you guys seen Rodgers? They wanted Favre gone because he was holding them back. He was washed up in 2004.

I do hate that they are holding back Keller and Congrats to Chansi Stuckey. I hope Feely has shown some of you why we are keeping Nugent.

Chad Pennington would have lost that game for us for a lot less.

  74. avatar Nick says:

Terrible play caling and decesion making yesterday. Oddly enough, i’m most annoyed by the late punt. That last punt on 4th and whatever it was screamed “hey, i would rather not lose 26-10 so i’m going to punt here and just lose 19-10″ Mangini (who i have never posted a negiative comment about) seems to play scared all the freakin time.

  75. avatar Reprocity says:

I know the chemistry will take time but one obvious thing you can blame the coaching staff for is the horrible personel use. This game is why Keller was drafted. To create a mismatch between the aged LB of NE! No Leon in the 2nd half! Cotchery was forgotten. Throwing screen passes to T. Jones?!? 1 pass to Keller and 1 completion to Cotchery is really bad. I was pissed about the Pass Int. call against Cothcery untill I saw the Denver – SD game! If anyone questions this then tell me why Franks is more involved in this offence than Cotchery or Leon or even Keller?

  76. avatar Reprocity says:

Pete, The dems are just the lesser of the two evils…for now. Drilling for oil is dumb. Sure we will have more and it will save us money BUT! we still will be using oil! Brazil doesnt use oil for their car’s fuel. Simple: Oil companys want to drill therefore Bush wants us to drill and you are listening to Bush?

How is it John McCain can’t email yet Weeb Ewbank can post on this site and HE’S DEAD! :)

  77. avatar Jason says:

Gotta say, I like all of you bleed green and white, I had high hopes, on paper we look good, but this teams coaching staff overcomplicate a simple game, if we cant run the fundamental plays that win games we certainly should not be trying all of these fronts and formations, the Pats play calling- using simple formations, to spread the field they used screens to bring our CBs in, – the run to wear out the front and before you know it they established a guessing game early because our defense cannot get off the field- why you ask because our offence is centered around the same old run, run, pass, punt mentality just in different formations- I don’t care who or what Schotty did in the past, you don’t tailor your plays around a playbook, you tailor it around your strengths and weaknesses in your players, the Pats proved that and so will everyone else who we play, we will not be productive if we don’t start getting the ball out of the backfield. But hay Schotty, we look good behind center with all of those colorful formations; I hope Manginous comes to his senses quick, before we know it its January and we will have nothing to look forward to except a draft-if the playbook doesn’t change he will be looking for a new job, just as Rich Kotite.

  78. avatar ddh says:

blogs must be great therapy, for us Jet fans, since there no bounce in the murder rate after a Jet game. if the word fan comes from the word fanatic, maybe thats why I keep believing, like playing the lottery I never win but keep on playing. I was thinking about all the money the Jets have cost me, all the years I bet on them(I could never bet against them) KNOWING THEYD LOSE! last years nfl ticket($240) this season Im going to sports bars and the bar tab to get numb is killing me, believe me I need to win the lottery, and then I think of all the fans who pay to go to the games, and now with psl’s on the horizon may be all need to win the lottery, or at least split a few. Goodluck!!

  79. avatar Eric says:

UGH!! Are you guys morons?? Whenever you make the kind of changes the Jets made in the offseason it takes longer than a preseason and the first game to come together. Penalties clearly show that. They lost ONE game against a very good team. Even without Brady, that defense is excellent.

It’s hysterical reading these posts. Gholston is a bust. Brett Ratliff is the answer at QB. Brian Schottenheimer sucks and is being conservative, when it’s clear the reason why is the QB isn’t all the way ready yet. We’re 1-1 and you guys are reading to jump ship.

  80. avatar Newarker22 says:

I read all of these comments. I agree the kicking game sucked. Too much pressure on the D the whole game as a result. Farve is still learning and I thought he did OK. The runs on the goal line were a testiment to the lack of faith in the pasing game at this point.

Did anyone notice Farve getting drilled after a pass and no roughing the QB call? The call on the Jets at the end of the game was less than boarder line. Why do the Pats always get the calls?

  81. avatar Newarker22 says:

O yeah, what about the pass interference at the end of the game that wasn’t called?

  82. avatar James in TN says:
