I’m heading to the stadium soon. I’ll write more later tonight or tomorrow!
The Jets come home Week 2 for their home opener for the third year in a row against the New England Patriots. It’s the first big hurdle for this Jets team to see how really good they are. With Matt Cassel starting for the injured Tom Brady, many fans have been licking their chops about this matchup. This lion might be wounded, but it’s still a lion.
Storylines to consider today …
Jazz versus Orchestra — Brett Favre, the guy who likes to improvise is going up against one of the most disciplined defensive minds ever. Can Favre prevail or will Belichick scheme him into submission? If Favre can buy time for his receivers downfield, I think he could see some big gains, but the Patriots front seven is re-vamped and will likely be pinning their ears back today to help their teammates in the secondary out as much as they can.
Jets Run Offense v. Pats Run Defense - We saw some idea of how this running game could look this year. But this week the team plays against a much better unit. Pushing Wilfork off the ball will be key. When the Jets beat the Patriots in 2006 pounding the ball was an important piece of beating that defense, which means a lot of Thomas Jones. Against the Patriots, Leon has had some big breakers on passes and gadgets, but struggled in the run at times, which he seems to do against 3-4s. Today the Jets face another 3-4 so Leon might not be helpful, unless they can open holes in the middle of the field and run away from ILB Jerod Mayo.
Jets Pass Offense v. Pats Pass Defense - This seems to be the biggest advantage that the Jets have right now. A seasoned Quarterback with loads of experience against a shaky pass defense. Damon Huard picked it apart last weekend, can Brett Favre? You would sure hope so. If it’s a close game late though and the Jets just can’t seem to get the running game going, if the Jets can’t continue to move the chains and keep the clock running, it might very well be the Jets undoing.
Jets Run Defense v. Pats Run Offense – Logic would lead you to think that the Patriots will run the ball early a lot to get Cassel comfortable … and they very well might. All the same, the ground game will have to be a big part of this win, bigger than the run Brady has led this team on, so expect to see a more physical game in the trenches. The Jets have the personnel to stop it, it’s a question of whether they can execute on it.
Jets Pass Defense v. Pats Pass Offense – Matt Cassel might be an unknown factor, but Bill Belichick only keeps things he needs. Pressure, pressure, pressure. Tom Brady succumbed to it in the playoffs, you’d have to think that Matt Cassel would too. The Jets had four sacks last game, a total which took them weeks last year to hit. The Jets can and will bring the pressure early in this game on Cassel. The longer he has the ball in his hands, the more likely he is to find Randy Moss deep or Wes Welker in the middle of the field. Don’t allow him to get comfortable or to get time. If the Chiefs without Jared Allen can get two sacks on this team, you’d imagine the Jets could do a lot worse. The Running Backs and Tight Ends should see a lot of catches, but at the corners, Randy and Darrelle will be seeing a lot of each other, but look at the slot matchup to be the real determiner as to how this passing game goes.

where do you get these pictures?
i want to see how Lowery does against Welker , he did pretty well in the miami game , now how will he play against a good WR ,
50 bucks says the first play the pasts will run is going to be play action , i just know it , thats what i would do
bassett i respect you and all but the pats LB are still good i know their old but you have to give them their respect alot of good guys people say mayo might be ROY which i dont want him to be thats gholstons award ,i hope by the way he looked pretty good didnt look like a deer in the headlights in the miami game , our guy is growing but by the time he is ready its goona be hard to take BT”s job , becuase it seems like BT rose from the dead
J! E! T! S! JETS! JETS!! JETS!!!
all i have to say is 2-0
The way I see it, the key for the Jets today is to run up the score nice and early, because this will force NE to abandon their running game in order to catch up. then we’ll see what Cassel is made of under pressure.
Can we get Nugent back?
I guess we’ll be going on 4th down the rest of the game. Unbelievable.
This game is off to an ominous start, with Feely missing a chip shot and the Pats driving right down the field. We’ll have to get more pressure on Cassell to throw him off.
Last week I wasn’t in front of a TV for Favre’s Jets debut, but kept up with the game on my cell phone with InGameNow.com updates. Right now I’m talking to other Jets and Pats fans about the game in real-time, it’s a great service during game time:
http://www.ingamenow.com/games/4018/1/New_England_Patriots_vs_New_York_Jets
we’re pretty lucky to only be down 6 right now. we need to get something going here.
Gee, I wonder if Belichick knew Mangini was going to run the ball three consecutive times having first-and-goal at the 2 –
eric mangini sucks
Terrible play calling, you don’t run the ball 3 times when you have Brett Favre, who is money in the red zone.
Jets would be winning the game if they had a kicker and a coach.
not to mention his passive play calling last week that almost cost them the game
he forgets he has one of greatest qbs of all time. He coaches like Clemens is the qb
last time i checked schotty calls the offensive plays, they have been horrible
what a hit by BT on cassel
You don’t trade for Favre and then not use him. It’s only been a game and a half but the play calling has been terrible.
There is lots of Jets/Favre discussion on Twitter, check out.
http://twitter.com/thejetsblog
http://twitter.com/jetfavre
Kurt Warner is throwing the ball all over the field against the Dolphins — Like we did last week before Mangini took the ball out of Favre’s hands –
We have a great Thomas Jones-led offense –
We’re done — Mangini won’t let him thrown again after that –
If Mangini won’t let him throw then release the poor guy. I have watched every Favre game ever played and he throws a few up there every game whether he throws 10 times a game or 50, so you might aswell let him loose the great plays will almost always outweigh the few mistakes a game.
Chad is padding his stats now that he’s down 24 points against the Cardinals –
Its about time we get a new punter in here, I’m had it with Graham. Yeah its not the key to the game but this is ridiculous, his punts are brutally bad
dropped passes, dumb penalties, horrendous kicking game (feely and graham) . . . this is very frustrating to watch. new england is playing without brady, maroney (and essentially moss becacuse of their very conservative play calling) and we are not taking advantage.
TD here and it’s over.
Just a terrible all around, coaches and players, performance by the Jets. The three running plays called from first and goal from the three were just awful.
Patriots have started in Jets territory 4 times, the kicking game is the biggest reason we are down in this game.
Finally a pass to Keller — Screw you, Mangini –
First and goal at the one — Let’s run the ball –
Oh no Mangini — You let Favre throw — TD –
mangini has finally come to his senses. nice drive and a pass in the red zone.
That is exactly why you don’t run the ball 3 times on the goal line. Favre is one of the best all time down there.
Another Favre 4th Quarter comeback, coming up!
guys, what is that sound clip the jets play after first down. i remember it from some commercial when i lived in NY just cant place it.
Jordan is killing us –
That roughing passer call was bogus. Vrabel hit Favre harder on the first half and it wasn’t called.
In the second game of the Brett Favre era — SAME OLD JETS — Look at what Kurt Warner is doing to Miami — This one is all on Mangini –
The defense has played a terrible second half. Haven’t stopped them once. Awful team effort by all.
Pennington was benched –
The minute I heard NE got Jordan I knew he would come back to haunt us !
special teams= joke
LC= joke
play calling= joke
the new jets= joke ( for now anyway)
Do we get to see the end of San Diego-Denver?
Mangini has to go. Bottom line. He’s not an NFL HEAD COACH.
Also, the Jets are not a good football team. As hard as that is to say, they are just no good. The defense is soft (Can rush the passer better than in past years), we are still too conservative on offense and the special teams looks horrendous).
To not win this game at home, is a huge statement, that the front office took a last ditch effort to bring in old and high priced players- a la Washington Redskins. Well, once again- it has not worked.
This will be a long year folks. Bills are better than us, Patriots clearly, San Diego will move the ball all over.
7-9 season as best- please change the coaching staff!!!
Yes, we do –
texas metfan its pc richards
Mangini is a horrid coach , your in the red zone and your running back gets stuffed twice and and you continue to run it ? Mangini is a joke and should have been fired last year , hes terrible and needs to go. I love how they had leon washington trying to block adalious thomas. hes a joke and yeah we have brett favre now not pennington so let him air it out more FIRE MANGINI
And….the Jets play unreasonably conservative football. The Pats didn’t beat us. We lost this one all on our own
Poor coaching , very poor officiating, and we are going to have a poor season. The Defense played its heart out in the first half, but was wore out in the 4th. This season is not over but it sure feels that way.
And, KD Bart, that roughing the passer call WAS bogus. In fact, he didn’t even bring Cassel down like he could have. The officials didn’t do us any favors today.
Between the Mets and the Jets this was a tremendous day.
Wow, look at all the bridge jumpers. All of you must have known that after two games last season that the Giants record was an abberation right and they were going to win the super bowl? Its two games, still a lot of new players. You didnt’ see this coming? The Pats were going to play this with a monster chip on their shoulder. This was a terrible time to face them. I’m not giving up yet as disapointed as I am. Gimme a break people.
We’re not giving up … we’ve seriously earned the right to grumble, though. :)
On the bright side its only game two and although they played horrible, they had a chance to win. I hope the coaching staff learned their lesson on that long scoring drive and let Favre play next week.
The defense was horrible in the second half but great in the first. Today’s loss is on the special teams and the offensive play calling.
You don’t trade for Favre and then go into ultra-conservative mode, lets hope its just because they are still getting used to each other.
Hey all you now Mangini haters I have an Idea !!
Lets fire Mangini and have Farve QB AND Coach from the field. This will make some of you very happy and eliminate once and for all our favorite pet “scape goat”.
say whatever you want, game should be 6-3 NE with JETS on NE 20. worst offensive PI call in history of NFL
JetGirl and Gang Green- I agree 100% percent.
Part of this issue is that we brought in a lot of new players and the fatigue, cohesiveness, etc, is always a detractor doing so.
But the larger part is the coaching. Mangini wanted those players to try to mask his obvious deficiencies. I agree that last year, even in 2006 he looked horrible and should have been let go.
My freudian side says that the reason Belichick is so bitter is that he knew Eric was not ready and he didnt want to see him embarassed. Bill wants that ‘Walsh’ like coaching tree and he didn’t want to see this guy be the kink in the armor, especially in New York.
Belichick knew he’d win today because he can outsmart, outcall and outmanuever Mangini.
As a season ticket holder for 22 yrs, I will not pay my PSL’s until Mangini is let go. Include Sutton and Schottenheimer for me…christ he’s Marty’s son!!!
Those 3 need to go and as fans. we deserve it! Please do this so we can somewhat save 2008!!!
I agree the officiating was pretty bad but come on, The pats are a great run stuffing team, their secondary is suspect so why not air it out more thats why we lost, we can blame the officiating all we want we lost for various other reasons. Favre i believe had 81 yards after the 1st and ended up with 188 yards, obviously the passing was effective in the 1st at least .
Were are all the Chad haters now? Weak arm blah blah blah…
It’s Mangini that’s the problem. He finally gets a “strong armed” QB and still can’t do squat on offense.
If we can’t beat the Pats with Cassell playing… ah who gives a rats ass. We barely beat the Phins last week.
At least we don’t have to worry about giving up our first round pick.
Toon- I will agree with that. That PI call was really bad. That being said, Jets did not do enough to win today.
And Hank- sorry that some of us are passionate and can already identify an issue. No reason to wait until January when we have finished another 4 win yr.
I wanted to see Mangini elevate this team as much as anyone, and I hate to say it too, but the fumbles are in the front office. And I’m shaking my head now because if we’re frustrated, think how every player on the Jet defense must be feeling.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
That was almost as fun as watching our three SB victories.
YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not jumping off the bridge. Just think that the overall effort by all involved, coaches and players, was,at best ,mediocre. Still coaching like Pennington is back there and you’re afraid of your QB. Running 3 straight times from the three was poor when you have a gun like Favre back there. Don’t think Cassel and the Patriots were all that great. Just played well and didn’t beat themselves. No TOs and only 2 penalties and one of them was at the end. As for the Jets. Missed FG, TO in own end, 7 penalties and poor punting. Too many mistakes.
Who invited the M*sshole?
Big Fat Paulie — Pennington was benched today by the Fish –
Aw, hell, hater. You know what? Go ahead and cheer. I’ve got nothing right now.
Lol its probably tom brady he has nothing better to do now that his season is over
kd bart — LaMont Jordan was great –
Girl- I really don’t think the front office is an issue. They have delivered some key draft picks and brought on some very good free agents (Although some look like they were fishing to save Mangini/ Tannenbaum- ie. Woody, Favre, etc.).
I was a big proponent of bringing in Favre. Still am and I will be until the regime ends. But I have never supported Mangini. I think he’s way too green (no pun) for a head coaching spot and clearly inexperienced. The coordinators are always horrific and that is becoming evident they are left on board only to leave scapegoat options.
Tanny is a cap guru. The office (w him in some role) has delivered Leon, Kerry, Lowery, our 2 OL, Keller, Gholston, among other and some valuable undrafted free agents. Those guys are either key players now, or have shown some flashes to be key very soon.
I think it really boils down to our coaching. There is definitely some ‘team’ issues in the sense of education of the playbook, cohesiveness, etc.
But at the end of the day, a home division game against their biggest rival- the Jets needed the win today. Without it, they are not relevant. They are 1 game back of two clearly better teams and back to the universe of ‘doubts’. They have also let New England gain confidence in multiples.
They said on the air, “You got to think it’s so hard for Tom Brady watching from home,” and my friend goes, “Yeah, with Giselle in his lap, I’m sure he’s really suffering.” :)
If any of you knew anything about football, MANGINI does not call offensive plays, Schottenheimer does. The officiating was horrible two weeks in a row. Schott’s play calling has been awful the 1st 2 weeks. I’d never thought i’d say this but Suttons play calling has been better than Schotts. Keep in mind the Pats barely beat KC last week, which got beat by da Raiders today. Its a long season, big game next monay nite against the Chargers.
Chris, excellent points and I must agree.
No one suggested Favre should coach. But why do you trade for the best play maker in football who excels when he is rolling out and moving around in the pocket and then run the ball up the middle or have Favre drop back and throw every play. Has anyone else noticed that every big passing play this year has been on a roll out or a scramble? Believe me its no coincidence I have seen every game Favre has played in the NFL and that’s how he gets it done.
It’s simple, play call like today and it will be a long and painful season. Let Favre run wild and it will be fun and exciting and he’ll even pull off a few games that they had no business winning.
I don’t think the offensive pass interference call was that bad a call. All I know is that they never would’ve called it on Randy Moss. The man has gotten away with offensive pass interference for years. Not only in NE but in Oakland and Minnesota.
The roughing the passer call was awful. Vrabel did worse in the first half and wasn’t called.
believe it or not herm edwards is probably a better fit to coach this team since he lets players play and never has any input….and no i don’t like herm edwards
The offensive pass interference call was borderline under the current interpretation of the rule, but clearly it shouldn’t have been a penalty and they need to adjust the rule. If defenders can now get away with murder because they are “allowed to fight for the ball” then surely an offensive player is also allowed to fight for the ball when the throw is off target.
Well, guys, I’m off to cry in my Mike’s Lemonade (Light, of course). I’m really glad I found this blog today though. Better than group therapy. See you next week.
week 2 2002, Pats won 45-7 and we still won division
Herm, yeah, they got crushed by the Raiders today, good one.
Wow. Shanahan goes for two and the lead with 24 seconds left and gets it. The Jets would never do that.
swizzle – yes thats true schottenheimer does but what mangini does have is the final say so and he should be able to tell Bschott to pick up the pace … didn’t freakin matter anyway the pats front seven was killin our line
the D looked pretty good for the most part ..special teams coverage needs to tighten up the coverage
no matter what its a sad day in NY and its sadder to be able to say that mangini and schottenheimer conservitive-ness make coughlin and gilbride look like daredevils .. they got brett farve like they wanted now they need to tailor the offense so that brett can be in his element instead of on his back
true so true
anybody here any post game comments yet ?
Swizzle- that’s exactly the reason Eric keeps them on board. Everything starts and ends with the head coach.
And if he cannot identify the problem, A. With summer practices, B. Preseason Games C. Game 1 against Miami, then he is accountable for not making changes.
Now, I agree Sutton and Schottenheimer need to go as well but please, let’s not leave Eric exempt from these conversations.
For the first time this season I got to see the game, so here’s my analysis of our giveaway to the Patriots.
5 things cost us this game:
1. Stupid penalties that cost a lot of yards–facemasks, 12 men on defense, illegal forward pass, holds, etc. If I am Mangini, they will all be running harder laps this week and learning how to count to 11.
2. Dropped passes. Coles has got to be a professional and learn how to catch or he should be benched. I’m fine with Cotchery, Stuckey and Keller if it means LC won’t kill us.
3. Favre’s INT–changed the whole game
4. Terrible game management–bad playcalling on offense, bad clock management, wasted drives
5. Feely’s missed kick. It didn’t affect a lot on the scoreboard, and it could have been overcome but it changed the tenor of the game. We drove down the field and got nothing.
Besides the 4 things that cost us the game, here’s what I didn’t like about the game.
1. Not enough coverage on Welker. He killed us all game long.
2. Our run blocking fell apart in the 4th Quarter.
3. Looking at the sidelines, the Jets looked deflated after the Favre interception and well into the 4th quarter. No sense of urgency.
Good things I liked about the game:
1. Our defense played well overall. We held an offense built to score to under 20 points. Coverage on Moss was good, I barely heard from him. They got to Cassell too.
2. Bryan Thomas and Kris Jenkins played well
3. Stuckey and Cotchery played well
4. The running game didn’t look bad considering we were running against one of the best DLs in the league
5. We moved the ball well at times and Favre’s presence helped us to convert some 3rd downs that would have been a pipe dream before he came.
Post Game Comment:
YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
mabey the pats will go 16-0 and lose another superbowl
If Mangini keeps this up, we’re gonna give up a high third-round pick to the Packers next year –
Almost forgot. Thanks for your Yankees beating Tampa Bay today! Way to go (literally)!
@ hater
yes, like you were laughing during last years superbowl, when you became one of the biggest failures in the history of sports: 18-1.
The Jets have gotten better, but are still not close to being an elite team. We’ll be much better week 11, once Farve really learns and gets used to a less conservative offense. (hopefully by then they will have seen the error of their ways and wake up)
From the Miami Herald today on the team the Jets barely beat last week:
http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/story/686403.html
“This wasn’t just ugly and embarrassing. This was ugly and embarrassing by the standards set by the lowly Miami Dolphins of 2007. As a result of Sunday’s 31-10 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, it might be easier to convince most onlookers that Miami’s record is currently 1-17 rather than 0-2. And the scariest part? This might have been the easiest opponent until Week 11.”
What a pathetic team the Jets are. Listen to you losers crying about the officials. Pats lose their best player and you still can’t beat them. lol!!!
favre just got interviewed and said he had a lot of fun out there today which is why he came back…well at least HE had fun while the rest of us are pissed off.
I cannot stand this anymore.
I’ve only been around for a short while, and I can’t see how any one else could ever be a fan longer than me.
Where do you begin this season?
Mangini is like Bill except more conservative, if that was even possible. Rush 3 plays from the 3 in a row? Yeah that makes sense in Madden 08 against anyone but the NE D-line.
Brett Favre is an excellent QB. But I do not think he expected the team to rely on his back alone to win games. Which apparently both our Offensive and Defensive coaching staff is doing.
The coaching staff needs to get a clue.
Defense needs to get disciplined, fast.
I am all for you die hard fans hoping and praying and sacrificing chickens in the slimmest of fainest of chances the NY Jets will ever become more than just a 1st round playoff team.
But I can find total agreement in the cliff jumpers. How can you expect people to throw away their time, money, and well being into a franchise that has found a way to lose and a fan base that makes up excuses for every one? With the classic response “just wait will next week!”? What is this ACC football?
Face it, we should have lost last week. If Favre did not hail mary that pass and it somehow work out, we’d be 0-2. In fact we should be and Miami should be 1-1.
Today proved that even with a better defense, a renewed offense, Magnini cannot win the big games.
I am kinda glad I cannot get any Jets games here on CBS in Mississippi.
I love this team with my heart and soul, but this is too much. I’m tired of such deserving fans (all of you) being disappointed every season with the false hope of a new year. There would be an Obama joke in there, but even as a fan of the guy, I don’t even want to make it now.
Flame on if you want, but its only week 2 and i feel like we’ve havent changed anything since week 2 of last year.
i dont think it was as bad as it seems…only three things that they did badly..1. PENALTIES!!…un-acceptable 2. Pass defense 3. Special teams..how hard is it to kick a 30 yard feild goal..cmon my sister can do that.and ben grahm can punt a ball if he was paid to do it..oh wait he is..Once Brett gets more comfortable with the offense the offense will be nasty. get the penalties down and wins will be flying in
at least favre had fun though!!!!!!!!!
stop all the over-analysis. JETS played like crap, and still should have been on NE 20 down 6-3. and maybe we still would have lost, but that was a game changing call. This is not doomsday – if we were 0-2…..then it is time to cliff jump. Next week is huge – AND I WILL BE IN THE STADIUM ROOTIG US ON
HA-HA-HA-HA YOU FUC#ING LOSERS. suck on this one for a while. if i were you, i would move a couple hundred miles away from home, so i could legitimately cheer for a different team. later douches!!
Belichick’s a pretty good coach even with no video and no Brady. Jets aren’t even close to an elite team, and Favre’s playground antics won’t get you to the playoffs.
Glad Faulk dropped his bong and came out to kill us today
