Marty Ball?!?
When baby Schott first came to the Jets I was amazed by his creativity. Shifting formations, trick plays a far cry from the boring Hackett offense that flourished under the Herm Edwards regime. I felt that we were liberated from the oppression of the underneath pass. Brad Smith became this almost mythical figure who would come on the field and make you guess what on earth he was going to do next. Where has that magic gone?
The last two years of Jets football has resembled Marty Ball more than it has the dynamic offense that we were promised. I have been watching games calling out the plays before they were called. Everyone in the stadium and at home knows what is coming. If my drunk self can figure out what is going on, I am sure the d-coordinators on the other side know what is coming. The conservative nature of our offense is driving me insane!
Brett’s most successful pass last year was the slant. Just as in Green Bay, we have good YAC receivers. Why don’t we use them? We barely run any slants! I have yet to see Brad Smith throw the ball in a live game. Matt Cassell seems to be able to complete short passes to quick and agile receivers. Wow, that sounds perfect for guys like Leon Washington, Chansi Stucky, and Brad Smith. If there is not a lot of chemistry, why not build it by starting with short comfortable throws so they can feel each other out!?!
The offense I have seen makes it look like Marty is calling the plays. Some people may say it’s too soon, but I think SCHOTT MUST GO!

I’ve been saying it since last yr. I had hoped that the shoddy play calling was the result of a sub par offense but apparently not. I also wondered when Brad would be utilized for his diversity with a pass to keep em guessing but it never happened. I also like using motion to help understand the opponent’s defense but when you got T. Richardson lined up at the X WR spot everyone knows that he ain’t staying there. Makes the whoel formatioin more predictable. Seemed like we had a genius and now….. Last yr. was the worst play calling i’d ever seen.

in the first drive vs the PATSIES,we moved the ball AT WILL with screens to LEON and GOOD running from TJ. why we went away from that I have NO idea! also, the fact that COTCH only had ONE RECEPTION IS INEXCUSEABLE and can we PLEASE use DUSTIN KELLER MORE!!! why would we draft him just to have him sit on the BENCH!?

Schotty is a moron! He needs to figure things3-the plays, all about trickery- this was needed in the past years with Chad and our less skilled players- younger WR’s establishing themselves, but now we got some talent who have been in this league. Time to draw up normal plays that are effective like quick slants that are almost impossible to stop and always good for five yards- perfect for 3rd down conversions, break a tackle and can get a lot more yards. But what do we do- a quick 3-5 yard out pass that leads the WR out of bounds and unable to pickup YAC! Also a most- Play Action Pass- I want to see this regularly where u pass to the TE’s as well as the open WRs. One thing with Herm regime- he was big on play action pass with Baker especially that one year, and baker came up big time after time for us. How come Cassell was doing a bunch of 3 step drop backs and pass and we arent? Those quick plays are like impossible to get sacked on!

Good god, make it stop. Talk about the most over-analyzed series of 3 plays in NFL history. If only people stopped and realized how absolutely ridiculous it is to call for the head of an OC of a 1-1 team with the reasoning being a series of 3 plays in one game.
Favre and the offense in general’s lack of chemistry is much more at fault for the Jets’ loss than Brian Schottenheimer. Again, the Jets are among the top 10 teams in the league in passing plays of 20+ yards, top 5 in passing plays of 40+ yards. And that’s not including the play to Cotchery that got called back, and the multiple drops from Coles last Sunday.
Here’s something that a lot of people are failing to take into consideration – An offense led by a QB that’s been in the system for a month vs. one of the smartest and most experienced and well coached defenses in the league.
Too much is focused on what the Jets didn’t do instead of what the Patriots did. The Jets were clearly not rolling on all cylinders offensively and the Patriots are coached by one of the best minds in the game and their defense took advantage of it. That’s why you play them twice.

I agree that some of the play calling seemed conservative at times, but NE took away the deep ball all day. Favre wanted the deep ball a few times and since nobody was open he scrmabled a little. On one play he hit Coles, but for the most part it resulted in a sack, int, or incomplete pass.
As for the 3 runs near the endzone, I like the runs, but put in 4 WRs, and make them think you’re throwing. Mangini was severely outcoached in that situation.
-
What makes you think Schott isn’t locked down by the Mangenius?
At least Schott doesn’t have the “I wish I never left my daddy in NE” look that his boss sports!
The Schottenheimers may not have the rings but they’re winners not douchebags like everyone Bellichick produced. Weis, Crennell, Mangini, and of course the biggest douchebag who partakes in doucebaggery on a daily basis — Nick Saban.

I can’t get enough of Brad Smith fans. Love’em. I just wish they were ruding for him on the other team, not mine.
As for the baby Shott, they either all go or all stay. Herman Edwards bought 2 extra years like that. First Teddy on D with Henderson coming in, then Hackett on O with Haimerdinger. Is that the road you want to take again.

DSmizzle, my first job was at the mechanic shop, you know gas, tires and all ….. I feel the pits of NASCAR coming my way. Yeah baby !!! Maybe you and your boyfriend Najy can come for the pole.

The answer, BigFatPaulie, is that if Eric keeps Should-be-Shott as his OC, that makes him responsible for the playbook, offensive strategy, and game calls. That is what it means to be HC.
I think Should-be’s innovations such as the hurry up during the game and formations are good with a weak armed QB like Penny. They make a lot less sense with a strong armed QB — just like using Brad Smith as a slash makes less sense. With a Favre (or any top QB) one doesn’t need trickeration but execution. Moreover, it got so overdone that one (at least I) could guess plays based on personnel and formations devaluing all the machinations. If I can see it without film techs and OCs and DCs studying film….
But as others have posted (wisely), of greater consequence is that there appears to be no rhyme or reason to the play calls. Rarely is a play set-up. Often something works and yet is disregarded before being stopped.
Yes, Should-be-Shott should be fired and if not soon, Eric should join him on the way out.

(surprised no similar thread about Sutton — the defensive strategy and misuse of personnel on the last Pats drive reeked) -
We had a post about Sutton before week 1. I think changing coordinators mid season is easier said than done. They both should have been gone last year. With that in mind we are a better team this year we’re running the ball, stopping the run, have big play ability and a lot less holes at key positions. One ha sto think that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. We have 14 weeks to find that out.
-
If you read the comments a couple of day ago I said this exact thing!!!!
The first season was amazing. I just don’t get what has changed.
-
Dave has it right – mellow out, people. The team is 1-1 and we should have been able to run it in on them with three tires. Stop talking about firing anyone in week 3 – just because we root for the Jets doesn’t mean we have to make the same knee jerk reactions as most of the (knee) jerk NY sportswriters and TV analysts.
-
It is about not having a true gameplan. He rarely allows the offense to get into a rythm. His play calling is backwards, the 1st down calls should be 2nd down calls, and his 2nd down calls should be 1st down calls.
If we have a bad 1st play we are 3 and out.
Also, he does not use his personnel correctly, ex: Leon in the backfield picking up A Thomas on a blitz in the 4th qtr. Leon should not be blocking anyone!

If you think Schott needs to go then you really need a clue. The line was revamped with Faneca and Woody and with two first rounders in Brick and Mangold they couldn’t do jack squat on 1st and goal at the 1 not once but three times.
Better yet, why aren’t you blaming Pennington for the offensive woes.
-
If they can’t get it done on play one why would you call the same play from the same formation 2 more times? I would think that he could change it up a bit.
This point is the lack of aggressive or reasoned play calling. That is what makes offenses successful. -
It’s about will and resolve. Don’t get cute near the goal line just pound it in! Why is no one complaining about not going for it on 4th down?
-
I don’t mind the calls so much, I just don’t think Thomas Jones is the right RB for that play. He’s better once he gets a little light and begins rolling but he doesn’t have a quick first step and no “ups,” ala Westbrook who leapt over for the TD in the same spot.

your totally right drose. good thinking

I can not agree with you any more. I hate Schotty so much hence my name. He is an awful coordinator. He is acting like he has a rookie qb with a bad arm instead of a Hall of Fame qb with a cannon. It makes no sense!
