Our comrade Mike Salfino over at SNY.tv writes that the Jets might be handcuffing Favre at this point in the season.
Defensively, though, San Diego is hurting while adapting to life without All-Pro defensive end Shawne Merriman, the key to their scheme. The Chargers also are last in sack percentage and 31st in interception rate. Those stats often run on parallel tracks. And they’re bottom five in allowing yards, rushing yards per play and first downs.
So Brett Favre can do some damage with this Jets offense if the coaching staff and playcallers loosen the reigns.
Favre is like a big-time shooter in basketball. If he’s hot, you have him keep throwing. And if he’s not hot, you have him keep throwing until he gets hot. Turn him into a game manager and you get the worst of both worlds — game-changing negative plays without the chance to dig himself out of trouble in his patented Helter Skelter, largely improvisational manner.
Last year, the Packers won 13 games while Favre threw more than 500 passes. Not counting the two games he mostly missed due to injury and rest, Favre averaged 36 attempts per game. In his first two Jets game, he’s averaged 24.
Last year in Green Bay, Favre threw on first down in the first and second quarters (when the score doesn’t significantly impact playcalling) about 58 percent of the time. This year thus far for the Jets, again in the first half only, the Jets have called pass plays a paltry 33 percent of the time. This is pathetically conservative. And the running game still isn’t good, with Thomas Jones on his last legs and D’Brickashaw Ferguson remaining weak at the point of attack.
It’s a good point, and a fair comparison, but I wonder if it’s apples to apples. The offenses aren’t the same and from a standpoint of just knowing the offense at this point of the season.

That 33% statistic will inevitably rise as the season goes on. I would bet it settles around 50% by week 16.

Now i have officially had enough of the media, and its only week two. Favre did fine in the first game, and the Jets won with a conservative game plan. NE FORCED the Jets to be conservative last week, and then there’s this whole goal line situation.. I am all for running the ball three times to get in. If you are that close, three tries should get you in the end zone. The play calling was fine, reporters in NY just like to create problems. One minute there are reporters talking about how the chemistry just isnt there, and then the next minute they want the jets to open up the offense? The person who wrote this article doesnt even know what they’re talking about.. Thomas Jones is running the ball very well so far you “!!!!!!!”ing moron. Don’t write about things if you are not going to research them properly.

I agree with Marc 100%. It’s week 3 dammit! This is **** stirring and pathetic. The guy is on the team 6weeks and people want him to play just like he did last year with the pack. Again, this is just pathetic.

The Jets have been handcuffing Favre since the second half of the Miami game — How that even can be questioned is amazing –
-
Its how writers chose different words to ask the same question. It’s only week two. Find something else to write about! Have they tackled the Charger defense w/o Merriman? How bd is LT hurt/ Which will he not be cutting because of his toe? How many plays does Brett really know? How many plays are there in ?the Jet playbook? anyone?
-
Are they handcuffing Farve? Duh. Farve is one of the effective QBs in the red zone. Use him. Three running plays up the middle against the Pats. Yeah lets attack the Pats strength. Good game plan. Use Farve, not only is he one of the best in the red zone but lets try to keep the other team guessing.

I guess some people don’t know how to read. It is known that ALL NFL GAME PLANS (specially Manginis) are “game specific”, this means it is designed specifically to that opponent, that week! The article also states that Lorenzos input is and has been incorporated into that game plan. I’m sure Lorenzo has the ability and authority to improvise any play that is not working. He is now passing ( I think) bout 50% of all the plays and TJ is running with a vengeance at 4.4 average. Didn’t we Buy or OL and Richardson to “shove it down their throat”
Don’t worry, Lorenzo will get his chance this monday. I’m praying that he comes through for us because I know the defense will show up for us again !!

Jose the Jets:
Great questions and is about time someone other than me to ask the magical question:
HOW MANY PLAYS DOES TH JETS PLAYBOOK HAVE AND HOW MANY DOES FARVE KNOW !!
THis my man is the $64,0000 question and everything to do with our offense being out synch and very insipid!
Way to go man!!! -
More of the same inane drivel. Does it not occur to Mike Salfino (whoever he is) when comparing Favre stats from Green Bay, that he had been on that team for 17 years and had a pretty good idea what his protections were, where his receivers were going to be and what they would do if the play broke down and he had to improv.
I guarantee that he and the sheep happy to repeat whatever soundbite is fed to them, would be the first one’s screaming that Favre’s finished and bringing him here was a bust the second he starts chucking interceptions because he’s just guessing on routes.

Remember if Favre missed 3 passes it would have been a disaster, only a field goal. Oh yeah, that’s all we got anyway. How silly of all of us. Anybody else got that Kotite kind of feeling about all this?
-
ah, if only you got 100 possessions each football game to make that basketball analogy work.
this idiot should compare the success rate favre has passing on 1st and 2nd downs in his short history with the jets to the success rate of passing on those downs in GB if he wants to make this argument.
-
I think the conservative playing by all of the JETS coaches is hindering the offense and the defense. Poor preparation is hindering special teams. If the JETS do not win on Monday, MANGINI MUST GO!!!!
-
thats rite im gonna say it again…
ITS ONLY WEEK 3!!!!!!
im excited for monday night unlike all of u miserable souls….
our season isnt over its just only begun

i still think 11-5 is reachable

i agree all the way except the part about mangini must go…i think our DC and OC must go…they obviously dont know how to stay agressive at all…they always seem to go away from what works…in actuality they make it seem like the other team adjusted…but its our OC and DC who play right in the hands of our enemies…and make other teams look better than they are…my question is…
ARE THE JETS AFRAID OF BLOWING OUT TEAMS AND SHUTTING THEM OUT…ARE WE AFRAID OF BEING THAT TEAM THE REST OF THE NFL IS GUNNING FOR…
the way we play it would seem so…i hate this lets keep it close mentality…with the talent we have on both sides of the ball…we should play to blowout teams… not to keep it close and win or lose by a few points…if mangini does share this this mentality with his co-ordinators then i would have to agree with the edidtor…and replace him to…even though this is only week 3…that loss to the paties should have been a win but again we played scared…we wont beat the bully up until we grow a pair and face up to them and take them out for good…but we wont do that because we play scared…

Randy Lang Jets Blog just reported that our new Punter Hofges was placed on the ijury report as questionable with a right thigh injury. WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS !!
AGAIN…. WHERE IS KAPINOS?

CORRECTION: IT’S HIS LEFT THIGH NOT HIS RIGHT.
HE KICKS WITH HIS RIGHT FOOT. -
Hurray for dakar-
that’s what i have been posting since opening day. this team plays way too tight and scared of giving up anything. rumor is that the jets know SD has good run D but bad pass D so they are going to try to trick them and run EVERY play. Brett will be a perfect 0-0-0 and we will lose 10-0 , but we were sooooooooooooooooo close. The Jets have very good tough players, so let them play. Did you hear shotty-jumbo formations are not flexible so no audibles. Then don’t call them you idiot!!! By the way a couple of roughing the passer penalties might actually make teams worry about getting their asses kicked. -
Stop people, please. It’s week three. Nobody “Has to go”. Wake the f**k up, you don’t need to buy into this nonsense.
-
This is a non-story. Anyone have any info on Hodges’ (the new punter) thigh injury?
-
HOW ABOUT THE RYDER CUP? WHAT A DAY!!
-
the nyc
im not buying into any story…im telling it as i see it… and what i see/saw is that the coaching doesn’t trust the talent it has on the field…with all the preaching of trust the player next to you i dont see none from the coaching…we play scared…playing scared doesn’t win a SB…and it never will…im tired of excuses…play to dominate the game…go for the jugular…plain and simple…the only way i might play conservative is when we have a 20 point lead in the 4th with 4 mintues left to play and we have the ball…when its an obvious win at hand…not like in miami…10 mintues left we gave c.penn 140 yards 1 TD and almost a game winning come from behind win…if not for revis we would have lost…i want to see a differance in this team sooner than later…i want to see the new bully of the nfl…not the same old jets…just my thoughts…

Pathetically conservative? Gee, I wonder where they got that idea. Maybe, we should punt on first down every time, hope for a fumble, and win 7-0. Who needs this damn offense crap. Let’s defend them to death.

Certainlly, Mangini and Shott deserve a large part of the blame. They were aggressive in 2006, calling plays like it was Madden football. Since then they have been conservative in comparison.
However, its clear that the offense is not insync due to all the new personnell. As good as Favre and the receivers are, I haven’t seen well timed throw, catch, and run. The big plays on offense so far have been the result of the players ability inspite of their lack of cohesiveness.
