Chad Pennington Does What the Jets Couldn’t …

by Bassett on September 22nd, 2008 at 8:00 am

Beat the Patriots.

No matter how you slice it, the Jets look even worse when the Miami Dolphins come out and shellac the Patriots, in the second week of the tenure of Matt Cassel.  Now, the Jets might get a lot better than where they started the season, and tonight will go a long way to prove that.

But, it’s mind-blowing to me that a team the Jets just beat, went out and abused the Patriots who just beat the Jets.  From watching some of the game, I think that a lot of it had to do with pressure on Cassel, and containing him on short throws.  It also doesn’t hurt that the Phins have a … I don’t know … good … running back.

I’m not sure it had to do with our running game. I think it was bad play calling and lack of aggression on our part that gave the Pats the game. I hate to say it but, the fins took the right approach and messed those girls up good.

chad didnt beat anybody….RONNIE BROWN beat the patsies.

    Bassett-
While everybody is yelling “coaching” it really does look like the Jets play tight. EVERY team makes mistakes, both mental and physical. While trying to keep those at a minimum is important so is aggression. All winning teams in the NFL take it to the other team. Mangini seems to game plan finesse around other teams strengths and errorless football . The story is everybody knew what the Lombardi Packers were going to do and they just went out and did it anyway. Chad has a horrible arm and the Phins used it that way but were very aggressive in all other ways. Frankly, Beli is in Mangini’s head and the sooner we all accept that the happier we will be. The Phins have Parcells, don’t forget that and that may actually be the difference at the end of the day. With our talent(and it really is good) we should have killed the Pats. It is not early, and this team needs to start making a statement about their toughness.

  4. avatar R in CT says:

Timing matters — the Jets got the Pats when they felt they needed to make a statement: on the road against a bitter rival, right after their best player went down. The Pats were flat as flat can be this week, at home against a lesser opponent who looked horrid the week before, but who had obviously gone to school on what the Jets did.

This is why they play the games. To sit here and lament that “Ooh the Jets should’ve beat them” is just a waste. I’m sure the Pats aren’t sitting there saying to themselves, “Well, we beat the Jets last week and they beat the Phins the week before, so we should’ve beat them.” That’s a loser’s lament.

  5. dan henning did, what schott. didn’t

I imagine the lede is just an effort to be provocative and you’ll likely get your wish on this thread, but if you’re going to credit on player, Ronnie Brown beat the Patriots.

Another way of looking at it is that the Jets should get a lot more credit for the victory at Miami. Kudos to Tony Sparano for effectively using the spread as well as some trickery to put BB’s defense on their heels all day.

Ultimately, what it means is it’s early in the season and no one should read too much into one win or loss. Yet.

  7. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I tend to agree with R. The emotion was totally different. The Phins got a full week of tape on Cassel and the O they intended to run with him. Also the Phins had an offensive package that bellicheck couldn’t defend against. The direct snap to Ronnie brown killed him. Lets not make Ronnie Brown a hero tho he had a great week 3 last year too. Where did that get him? I’m just glad the Pats now own a loss. Buffalo looked beatable too.

Let’s go out tonight and win. Let’s get back on the right track.

  8. avatar are-tee says:

Going into yesterday, Pennington had only lost one regular season game in Foxboro (I’m not counting the game last year where he relieved Clemens, already down 7-0.) He beat them in 2002 and 2006, and lost a close one (13-7) in 2004.

  9. avatar subwayfare says:

And the voices screaming that a coach who tries to run on the Pats should be fired since it’s obvious their only weakness is in the secondary are suddenly very quiet.

  10. avatar Jason says:

I will say this, we will not be a winning team if the coaching staff keep their admit attitude on tailoring game plans around a playbook, good coaching tailor the playbook around their players strengths and weaknesses, and try exploiting the opposing teams weaknesses, a blueprint that guys like the Big Tuna and Billy B has mastered, and now apparently Miami under Billy P is learning- they made huge improvements since the first week, while we JET fans are watching our team sit stagnant, we have the talent now open the playbook and tailor it around the scouting reports or let Bret call the shots behind center, he is a proven winner with 16 years of experience in the NFL, which is a half a decade more then Schottenheimer.

  11. where is PatsFan today?

  12. avatar Liam says:

Congratulations to Chad. Very happy for him. That must have been really sweet.

  13. avatar JetsFanforLife says:

Didn’t see Pats/Miami (no DirectTV), but going to assume Phins were pretty much error free whereas Pats were not. With Buffalo finding the grit to come back on a determined Oakland this all just tells me AFC East is wide open. Tonight’s effort will be interesting as hopefully by now players have gotten settled in (think third week of returing to school when you were a kid) and we’ve started to develop the chemistry to become as great a team in ’08 as the talent we have should allow. Also, recall GMen’s first two weeks last year…remain optimistic as it’s a long season, and frankly, after tonight our schedule is much softer than most.

Some Chad haters on this blog still talk as if Pennington didn’t have anything to do with the win. Any HALF informed football fan knows that THE QB MAKES THE OFFENSE GO, that is why he gets the big buck$. Penningotn IS known as leader AND motivator and UNITER and yesterday he proved it and both anouncers gave him tons of credit . He passed for over 200 yards and played mistake free football.

WHAT MORE MUST HE DO TO GET SOME CREDIT !!!!

  15. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

    Score a touchdown.

  16. avatar subwayfare says:

hank/naples – I am not a “Chad hater” but when four TD’s are the result of a direct snap to the RB, it’s not a day the QB is going to be singled out for a lot of credit.

I will say this: On this particular Sunday, the Dolphins CS did a better job than Mangini did against the same opponent. That’s irrefutable. I like our CS for the most part but Miami came up with a better game plan yesterday and that’s a tape Mangini will want to take a long look at.

Correction – he lost one in 2003 ( I think he threw 5 picks in that game).

  18. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

There are a lot of things in Mangini’s head, but if he doesn’t get the team playing up to its potential, then he will be looking for a job. Woody didn’t spend all this money to go 8-8. Frankly what the Fish did to the Patsies really shows up the poor coaching staff we have in Florham Park. They had better get their A game going and quickly. But I don’t think Mangini is smart enough to do it. After all, why is Sutton still the D-coordinator??? And why is Schott still so predictable?? And why did they have to bring back Westhof if the new guy was so great?? Good coaching can make an average team great. Bad coaching can make good team terrible. You decide after Monday night what type of coaching we have because I believe we have a good team.
    MANGINI MUST GO!!!!

  19. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Editor- Come on same stuff day in, day out

Dolphin’s backs ran great. Williams even flirted with 100.

Sutton still has a job because he doesn’t get in Mangini’s way when he toys with the team at the bye week. We haven’t even played yet this week can we wait until after we play to fire everybody again?

  20. avatar hank/naples says:

    subwayfare:

How about twelve consecutive passes. Could that have anyhing to do with making the run go?

Anyway, lets forget Chad and talk about Farve. Tonight he is playing against the last or second to last passing defense and 30th overall. I don’t want to hear ANY excuses about our offense because I know our defense WILL SHOW UP.

  21. avatar subwayfare says:

    The Ed(itor)-

Rather than just constantly spam the boards with the “Mangini must go” mantra why not elaborate? Are you saying he should be fired this week? Do you advocate dismissing the entire staff as well? Do you expect that a new coach coming in off the street with a totally new philosophy and no familiarity with the players will garner more immediate wins? How, specifically? Any examples to cite?

  22. avatar j says:

The Jets lack any offensive gameplan, at least the dolphins had a game plan.

  23. avatar subwayfare says:

    hank/naples –

I know Chad fans (personally I’m a Jets fan) want to find opportunities to chastise the Jets for letting him go. And I’m sure they’ll get their day sometime this year. Miami will likely have at least one win that Chad has a majority stake in. Yesterday just wasn’t it.

  24. avatar hank/naples says:

    subwayfare:

Ed(itor), Pat d and like their idol Johnny Styne, are just plain haters. They hate the OC,DC,HC,a certain WR and QB then they claim they are Jet “fans”. But what they trully are FRONTRUNNERS. They are happy only when winning or in front.

Their ignorance is amazing in that the whole world knows that it will take time for the whole offense to blend in. This is true from the OL to the RB to QB and WR. The Jets problem has been compounded by Farves limited knowledge of the playbook but they totally ignore or whitewash this by spewing hatred towards the coaching staff. All this B…S… was started by the biggest Pennington hater on this blog Johnny Styne.

  25. avatar Brad says:

Although the Playcalling has been suspect on offense, especially that goaline 3 run plays last week, the coaching is not to be blamed for everything.

My biggest concern with this team is our kickers on special teams! And that isn’t specifically the coaches fault when our FG kicker goes down and the backup misses a chip shot; as well as our punter having a horrible 2 games. When the kickers are messing up like they have, it is game changing, taking the life out of the team as well as giving great field position to our opponents.

We are not going to win too many games if our kicking game doesnt get turned around!

On offense it is clear that Favre is still learning as well as everyone else on the team and stamina for a lot of these guys seems to be a factor too. The first 2 games have been played in hot weather and these guys arent used to playing full games yet. The defense has looked tired in the 4th quarter and favre has admitted to being tired too.

17 for 20 226 yards 11.3 avg per completion, 0 Interceptions. Those are Chads Stats!
    Time of possesion 32:33.
Chad had to do something right, QB controls the game, Taking nothing from Ronnie Brown Great Individual effort.
I am a Chad Fan! Congrats Chad on Beating the PATS.
Mangini Craps his pants when Belichek is around. The Jets played not to lose instead of like the Dolphins, Playing to Win the game.

The Jets were out of sorts, To many men on the field, Subtitutions late and unsure, Farve Checking down quickly. Good thing he has that strong arm to check down so quick with.

Farve does not fit into the Jets Offensive System, They need to change the System and let Frve be Farve if this is the way they want it, Like it or not, Pennington was a Jets system QB.

    just my thoughts!

  27. avatar David says:

It all came down to play calling. Did you see the trick plays!!!!!!

  28. avatar D. Greene says:

we know them loses wasnt chad’s fault

  29. avatar Najy says:

Chad spent mroe time at WR yesterday then behind center..

Wait and see after tonight. Please refrain from bashing our coaches after 1 loss. They felt we can go head to head with NE.

Miami felt they need to pull out all the stunts and attacked them with trick plays. No biggie. It was 1 game. No need to dwell on it.

  30. avatar DSmizzle says:

Najy, I wouldn’t exact call direct snaps to the RB “trick plays”. Essentially, they were using Ronnie Brown as their QB. That’s all. He was the QB on those plays, even though he is usually an RB.

  31. avatar SackDance99 says:

This talk about Miami improvement and how great Chad was is just a joke. Miami just finished getting abused by the Cards in Arizona and Chad was benched because it looked like the Fins had regressed. Credit Sparano and Co. for developing a great game plan, geared around power running in spread formations, but I listened to the whole game on Sirius and what struck everyone was how flat the Pats were, how unenthusiastic the crowd was and how easily the Fins ran the ball against the Pats. So, Mangini wasn’t crazy in developing his plan, he just needed more creativity in the formations (3 TEs at the goal line? The Fins spread the Pats defense and ran in the gaps). Also, it’s not hard to beat a rookie QB. Get a lead so he can’t rely on his running game, defense the short passes that get him in a groove (something that was not apparent against KC, but became obvious against the Jets…more film, more prep time) and put him on the ground. Combine all those short drives by the Pats with long power running drives against the Pats D, and the result became inevitable once the Fins were up 10 points. The Pats D faded in the heat and the Fins (who played in the heat the prior 2 weeks) just beat them up.

I posted this before, but last week was a statement game and the Pats D and their vets came up huge. They couldn’t match that intensity 2 weeks in a row and were beaten (maybe Tom Brady was more important than anyone thought, because the Pats are now 2-2 in their last 4 games and in those losses, BB’s team was curiously flat, which is maybe understandable for a game aginst the Fins, but not in the Super Bowl) . Instead of everyone bashing the Jets (and I still say the officials robbed the Jets last week), let’s be happy that the Fins just handed every team a blueprint on how to beat Cassell, who will now be forced to try to go up top to Moss, something he’s seemed scared to do the last 2 weeks. If the Pats can’t score and get a lead, their D can be worn down. All this is good, but even a great development that will hurt our chief divisional rival becomes a vehicle to bash Mangini. Amazing.
