Jets Release WR Marcus Henry to Make Room
Posted on September 22nd, 2008 by Bassett
To make room for Ben Graham, the team has announced that they have cut 2008 draft pick, WR Marcus Henry from University of Kansas who will go through the waivers process. If you’re counting at home, the team now is carrying five specialists … LS James Dearth, Kickers Mike Nugent & Jay Feely and Punters Ben Graham & Reggie Hodges.
Once the Jets get through these injuries, they will drop these players and add players like Kenwin Cummings and Marcus Henry back onto the roster.

Waiving Henry is a big mistake! He’s tall and did well in the preseason but couldnt get on the field with the talent at WR. There’s no way he makes it to the PS. My bet would be seattle.
2 Punters and 2 Kickers, and they all suck, what a joke!
same old jets…so dam pathetic…waiving M.HENRY is a mistake…and he will be picked up by some other team and they will show the jets how to use a tall quick WR with good hands…
one more time. only the jets…
Why couldn’t we just waive Hodges and resign him later?
Oh lawd! This is a TERRIBLE move… I’ll be shocked if someone else does not claim him… Hate this move… Let’s just go for it on all 4th downs tonight at this point!
For all of you on the MANGINI bandwagon, this move makes no sense. This move actaully shows the stupidity of this coaching staff. Why not cut Hodges and sign Graham. Instead they cut a promising WR so they can have 2 punters and 2 kickers on the roster. Only the JETS could find themselves in this predicament. MANGINI MUST GO!!!
question: i live in brooklyn (greenpoint) and i’ll be coming back from the Mets game tonight looking to catch the last hour of the Jets game tonight. anyone know of any good bars in the area that will be showing it? or anywhere near Shea or off the 23rd-Ely 7 stop. any help would be awesome.
jagg
i was wondering about that 2…

You are stating the compete obvious. Any fan of a team would make that assumption but one would have to think the coaches no a bit more than the averge fan.
There has to be some reason for this move.
wait a min what if some one takes henry the the guy is good if you know how to use the guy
I am and have been a Mangini supporter but someone will have to explain how we have 7 spots occupied by 4 QB’s, 2 punters, and 2 kickers?? We just released a young WR for B Graham?? Didnt we sign another punter to our practice squad? What a mess!!
Drew, don’t you mean 8 spots? Or is this new math?
Kewpie to the Ed(itor). Just a Green Guy got it first but the Ed, put the proper perjorative in his comment.
With these bozos in charge, we will be SOJ until Woody grows a pair and starts over with guys who don’t need the Wizard of Oz (i.e., they have a brain, a heart, and courage).
No one would believe this stuff. If we lose Marcus over this, this FO should not last another game.

The problem with NY is that we like to execute head coaches and players before going to trial.. take it easy, lets see what comes from this, if anything, Mangini has brought a feeling of professionalism, GREAT DRAFTING and cohesiveness to this team like no one else has in awhile. You want to kick him while hes down, then kick him while hes down, but understand that we cannot see the bigger picture until later in the season
Although this was a stupid move, you don’t think the Jets brass hasn’t thought of this whole thing before we the fans have do you? Please, half of you right now are sayin FIRE MANGINI, I wonder how many of you will call him Mangenius, after a win tonight
drew
didn’t you know hodges is an all star kicker that no1 wanted…lol…were cutting our players to have 4 kickers on our team…how pathetic is that…
They couldn’t cut Hodges. He’s a hot commodity. A punter who hasn’t kicked in the NFL for 3 years. I’m telling you guys this has a Kotite feel to it. They got lucky with Cummings and I guess they were going to cut Henry for Clowney in a week or two anyway. Don’t forget these geniuses cut Paul Raymond for yet another punter on the practice squad. So we have 3 crappy punters 2 average kickers andone extra QB who better be REALLY good. No wonder the special teams suck. Once again, there are a hundred punters graduating every year-you’d think would be worth it. Instead of buying tickets lets use the money and run a kicker/punter tryout camp for them.
well then why dont we just see how many of us want mangini fired…vote yes or no…
i vote…NO
I’m not in the “Fire Mangini” boat, but this is yet another in a string of questionable decisions from this FO that has dated back to last offseason for me.
In my opinion, the mistakes starting (except for great drafts) during last offseason when they tried to be “cute” and acted as if they can keep winning with marginal talent. They not only refused to simply deal with the Pete Kendall situation, they also seemed to think they could pretend to be New England and have marginal starters at a bunch of other positions and still churn out 10-12-win seasons.
Now this offseason they pissed me off by refusing to simply deal with the Baker situation, make it go away (no matter what they did they’ll be dealing with this issues in the future anyway with other players). Now, with the coaching decisions themselves, they’re driving me nuts.
This Marcus Henry thing is just absurd in my opinion, especially in light of all the “specialists” they have. I think Nugent is incredibly overrated and would pass through waivers anyway, because he’s injured! If he didn’t pass through waivers, I think that life would go on, take a chance on that at least!
Finally, I don’t know why they didn’t just cut this 2nd punter.
If I were Seattle, I’m jumping on this!
too early-no let’s do this again at the half way mark. But is this really better than Herm?

The flaw I have with your thinking here is that it would justify anything that anything sports team or politician would ever do, because they “know more”. In reality, many politicians are corrupt and many sports organizations (which we know all too well) aren’t all that competent!
That would be correct in most cases. However, this is such an obvious move that there has to be something behind it.
Why would Mangini want two punters on the team? Just for the hell of it? I am sure he has a reason for it but we dont understand it yet.
Competition brings the best in all athelets. Maybe thats what he is promoting. No one’s job is safe.
Dont kill the guy if you dont understand what he is doing!!!!!!
Yes, it is a little weird to have four spots reserved for kicking specialist– although they clearly expect Nugent back eventual and will free up that spot.
Regarding Henry, lets relax a little bit. He was a 6th round pick who has shown flashes of absolutely nothing. He would have/will provide nothing for this team going forward this year. I know the littany of players who were drafted after 171 and became stars, but come on. Its Marcus Henry.
Boo Ed said what he says everyday.I was robbed.
You’re right. He’s a genius. All these coaches for all these years never thought to carry 4 kickers. This so brilliant all of us are too stupid to understand it. He’s a damn einstein.
Also lots of you are acting like Marcus Henry would develop into a starter. Well who knows if he could? The odds of a 6th rounder making a huge impact are never great anyway. If it makes you all feel better he didn’t show enough in preseason for other teams to really want him. He’ll likely fall to the practice squad.
Yeah 24, you’re right Marcus Colston (7th) sucks too. And from Hofstra no less-how did these guys miss him
I said the odds. We can overreact and draft and keep a bounce of 6th and 7th rounders and hope we strike gold! Does that make you feel better?
*bunch
For every Tom Brady and Marques Colston they are 100s of other no namers who get cut within their first few years in the pros. It’s really hard to hit in the later rounds. Even though Stuckey looks legit enough for a 7th rounder.
All of a sudden, Marcus Henry and Paul Raymond are Randy Moss and Terrell Owens? The Jets have more than enough WRs and Keller who can (and should) play the slot more. Look, I have no friggin idea why the Jets have 2 punters on the roster and why Hodges just wasn’t cut and Graham picked up (maybe there’s a rule against this? I’m guessing here, but if you can cut a guy, pick up a replacement and, then, cut the replacement and pick up the cut guy again, maybe the Player’s Union would be upset? I mean, doesn’t cutting a guy shed his contract and accelerate a cap hit, so isn’t it possible to screw a guy under his contract? Just wondering.) Hodges got hurt in practice, that’s just bad luck. If Henry gets signed by another team and becomes a star, well then we can all lament a bad move. But, WRs are a dime a dozen. Here’s the CFL leaders at WR and you’ll notice quite a few NFL practice squaders, including a few ex-Jets:
http://www.cfl.ca/statistics/league/stat/Receiving/year/2008/
I say, forget Henry and let’s sign Ken-Yon Rambo or Geroy Simon.
I guess i was wrong. I thought about it and would much rather have 5 kickers than “speculate” on a guy becoming stuckey or colston.
Wow! 4 kickers and 4 QBs tying up 8 roster spots! What is Danny White and Doug Flutie doing these days?
can’t pick up white or flutie—only kickers from now on. Does the practice squad punter punt to the practice squad guys for practice? 5 and counting. Is Isaiah running personnel now the Knicks don’t need him?
By the way I don’t care if they lose tonight as long as they tough ansd well. But lets hope they don’t get out coached by Norv Turner. Norv Turner!!!!!!!!
Play tough and well. Just the thought of Norv Turner outsmarting them made my fingers numb.
Norv’s only got 1 punter and 1 kicker- what a dumb ass!
I would have rather kept Henry than Ainge. Ratliffe looks too good to let go.
Sack- I assume it would be because he got injured while working for us and then we dumped him. That has to violate or piss off somebody.
That other dumb ass-belicheat only has 1 punter and 1 kicker! Ha, what the hell has he ever won?
Wow, the Jets temporarily have to carry 2 punters and 2 kickers and the sky is falling. And, once Nugent is healthy and Mangini settles on a punter, there will be no WRs around to sign for the last 2 roster spots on the team?
Like everyone else, I think the 4 QBs decision was peculiar. Again, just a guess here, but maybe the coaching staff is concerned with Favre retiring after this season and want 3 able bodied QBs who know the system for a QB competition? Also, isn’t KC’s contract expiring next year? And, Ratliff didn’t have a long deal in place either. You can be sure one will be gone in a year. As for special teams, again, maybe I missed something, but it looked like the coverage was fine, but the punting and kickoffs sucked. Were Henry and Raymond special teams demons? I seem to remember that Wallace Wright and Brad Smith fill that role.
Dan C, my guess is that Ainge would’ve been snapped up quickly. From what I saw, Ainge can’t be worse than Tyler Thigpen and, as we all know, it’s entirely possible he would have ended up being a Patriot. Personally, I just had a little vomit come up in the back of my throat thinking about another Ainge in Boston!
jas, the raiders have one punter and kicker and they actually used a 1st rounder for their GHB-using kicker. That’s why they’re where they are today! Oh, never mind.
Everyone relax. The knock on Henry coming out of college was that his hands weren’t that good. I think Sack is probably right, that there must be a rule which prohibited them from cutting Hodges. Whatever the case, releasing Henry is not going to make or break this team.
OK, this has been posted a bunch of times on other blogs, but here goes – it’s a violation of the CBA to cut a player when he gets injured in the middle of the season. So, unless you want to play without a punter, what choice do you have? Henry was the 7th wide receiver on the depth chart. When Nugent comes back they can cut Feeley and re-sign Henry if he’s still around.
Oh, if we could only be like that Raider dynasty. But you know there may be some stunning similarities. Wait til Davis sees we have 5 kickers. Don’t be surprised if copies us and will that really piss me off.
Sack-
Don’t bother. These are likely the same people who, when Nugent first got hurt, were calling for Mangini’s head for not having another kicker on the roster.
I am not saying the Jets roster management is inscrutable, I didn’t get why they didn’t IR Ainge. So what if he can’t practice with the team? Most of what he’ll need to compete next year will come in OTAs and training camp.
are-tee-
then IR his sorry butt!! and carry real players.
Thank you subway. Anybody got a brilliant reason why they didn’t IR Ainge? Oh yea, all three guys might get hurt and there’s not a single QB out there better than Ainge.
Jeez, I was pissed about this nonsense and then Sack compares us to the Raiders. Oh my God, what has happened? My head’s going to explode!
people wanted to fire tom coughlin after week 3 last year. i’m not saying the jets will go to the superbowl this year, but give it a rest with calling for mangini’s firing after a few unusual moves. it could be a lot worse–we could have kansas city’s coach…
You are right. Herm’s a dumb ass. He’s only got 1 kicker and 1 punter. What an idiot!
I don’t think you can IR a player unless he’s actually injured. Ainge was clearly fine as of the last pre-season game. If you could IR anyone, teams could just stockpile future prospects.
Now we’re screwed -Herm is an idiot and now he’ll see he should have 5 kickers and scoop up all the available guys before we can add them.
by the way ian-herm’s the idiot not you. my fingers got numb again thinking about the Raiders-oh my God.
Jas, this is basically what your saying…
Heres the situation, you are stuck on an island, you have a good source of water, and a seed that you THINK can prosper into food growing and water providing plant, so you trade your source of water for that seed…
Smart Investment? Probably not, you’re playing really bad odds and risking it all for something that may or may not grow, trading away your best shot at surviving for potential.
Now, with that said, are you really busting on Manginis chops for personel moves he consistently makes or are you just speaking of this isolated incident..
because from my recent memory, nobody has made good TRADES like the Tangini combination, no one has had GREAT DRAFTS as the Tangini combination, heck, no one has made better roster moves (playing certain players that ahem* Herm did not) than Tangini has..
SO PLEASE! I beg of you all, quit your bitchin about what you THINK will happen, because apparently, these guys have a better idea than you. Even if this proves to be a mistake, you are gonna take his head for that, with all those other things they were able to do, regardless of record for the sake of this conversation
Its an instant gratification world that we live it, but that doesn’t make it reality…. go figure it out
That is a fair question. Their personnel has bee quite good. Remember this team was a mess with very little quality over the roster. It just seems that the season is not managed well. I am diehard fan for 40 years and penalties on the very first play of the season worries me. they have 6 months to get ready for it. They have not looked good whether people want to admit or not. Typically that doesn’t bode well for the whole season.I have hesitated to mention this but remember the schedule issue. When mangini took over for Herm he got a cushy schedule and went 10-6. That got him a real schedule and he went 4-12. Now we have a softer schedule again so we’ll see. I just think they may be too cute for their own good.
Jas:
Hilarious posts – I like your exasperation.
I agree with you on that.. the biggest disappointment really hasn’t been the playcallers inablilty to call the right plays (Shott) but the ill advised penalties that costs us drives time and time again, this is what we saw towards the end of last season and we started on that same path
Thanks-can’t give long answer- my head exploded.
Schedules are over-rated. I bet the Pats were looking at their schedule and saw Miami last weekend. How did that turn out?
JETS…Kill dem Bolts!

I don’t think you can IR a player unless he’s actually injured.
Teams do it all the time to protect a player they think has a future with the team but not enough immediate value to occupy a roster spot. An IR’d player can’t practice with the team, attend meetings, etc., but BB is famous for not adhering so strictly to those terms. IR’d players still get paid and count against the cap so stockpiling them would be financially prohibitive.
Oh my God- they just signed a specialty HOLDER and have to cut another guy!!!!
all you guys are absolutely cluless!! except SACKDANCE99, ALLTHINGSNY, NYCPARKINGEXPERT, ans SUBWAYFARE…..
OK, kc
What I don’t get are all of the apologists for Mangini and Schottenheimer; must be the benefit of low expectations.
its the SECOND GAME OF THE SEASON!!!!!
the THIRD tonight obviously, and EVEN if we DONT win it is NOT a MUST WIN GAME!
that being said,TONIGHT would be a great time to show the WORLD that the J!E!T!S! are for REAL!
A-M-E-N
AND even MORE importantly,SHOW OURSELVES!
Wow , I thought I was bad at Fantasy football as a manager. Never thought of 4 kickers. I might try that. LOL what a joke in FF or the NFL. How do we have the nerve to take Graham back?
uhhhh,because we have NOONE ELSE!?
We’ll kill em. shotty has a new 4 kicker formation that will drive them nuts.
let me guess…THATS RIGHT,we should have FAVRE PUNT TOO!!??
Damn-kc-the bolts read these posts before the games and now you gave that away. somebody call shotty and let him know the favre punt thing is off.
no one else can kick punts? really? lol
Hodges was signed off another team’s practice squad. You can’t cut him the same week. It’s against the rules. They are probably going to keep Graham and cut Hodges as soon as they are allowed to.
whos gonna kick punts James in TN??? KELLEN CLEMENS??? maybe LEON should do it!!?? what are you talking about??
u guys need to relax. Get ready for monday night football! By the way, i believe it is illegal to put someone on IR if they are not hurt. The player has to sign off on it too. Henry is the next Randy Moss!!! You guys are being ridiculous. There is a reason they kept Clowney instead!
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!!!!!! J! E! T! S JETS! JETS!! JETS!!!
Further clarification: If you sign a player off another team’s practice squad, he must be on your 53-man roster for at least the next three games.
brilliant guys. are you guys ok that these idiots signed a guy they have to keep 3 weeks instead a guy off the street ———-oh thats right there must not be anybody else-you’ve got to be kidding. This is worse. my head is going to explode again.
LMAO – Stop, Jas, you’re killing me.
Hey- since i’m clueless how about this -the new punter is still hurt for two weeks and chatman comes back-who do waive then-Leon! Can’t waive Ainge -he’s the new double backup holder.
subwayfare:
I didn’t kill Mangini for not having 2 kickers on the roster, but I most definitely DID bust on him for not having prepared another player or players on the team to at least have a little practice in making easy kicks!!!
Why did Kellen Clemens look like he never even tried to kick extra points or short field goals before? Is it that hard to imagine a kicker getting hurt? Happens to a few teams every season! Bad job by Mangini!
