Daily Links: A Tough Tuesday

  1. I turned off the game early and went to bed.
I thought the onsides kick was stupid (for the same risk rewards reasons posted in other threads by a brilliant analysis – sorry for the lack of attribution).

But I watched the play several times before I went beddy bye and thought Wallace had no chance for the ball. A bigger, taller, stronger guy was in excellent position preventing any chance of Wright even getting two hands cleanly on the ball.

So all the comments by guys who obviously did not watch the game that Wright had to come down with the ball…

Must be watching a different game. Sure wish I was rooting for a different team.

OTOH, Coles looked weak going for the ball that was intercepted for a pick six. As opposed for going up strong for it, he allowed the charger to go up and over for the ball. If Coles goes up we at least have a chance for a penalty. I don’t understand why he is playing. I thought if you could not practice you could not play. With a new QB, it seems to me the WR should be the guys establishing a relationship with Favre in practice and making plays. Stuckey and Cotch should be the WR. Coles and Smith should never see the field.

  2. Another offensive debacle, no run game, no Leon in the offense. The O line is terrible, 2 crappy tackles, too many blown coverages. I think that I will just cut and paste this message until I see different.
At this point there are no excuses for the Coaching Staff, the clock is ticking, time to get it together, or we will be talking about the 2009 draft.

Not that it mattered, but why not go for 3 pts in the end of third/start 4th? And the 2pt conversion at the inch line, ouch!

  3. I knew it was not a good sign for the Jets last night when the TV cameras panned through the crowd and found a bunch of Jets fans holding up signs in support of gang green. Problem was there were 4 numnuts standing there holding up J-E-S-T! 4 frickin letters and they couldn’t spell it right on national TV! I mean jeez, aren’t we chanting those letters all the time! Through the laughter of everyone at the bar I was hanging in, I realized it would be a long night…

  4. One of the MNF crew made a comment about the fact that Favre commented that players on the Jets don’t make big plays and get all fired up. Interestlingly, when you look at them, all of them, nobody seems to play or coach with any excitement. I used to think that Mangini was a fire and brimstone kind of coach, but watching him lifeless on the sideline last night and that act like a stuttering little defenseless kid in his post game conference made me realize this team does not seem to play with any emotion. They seem to be a bunch of smart, good character guys, who aren’t all that fired up. Nobody seems to give a crap, they just take it one game at a time.

So, I agree with Harlan. Coles is indicative of what is looking like an epedemic on this team…an epidemic of lethargy. People have been saying that Favre has brought another level of energy to this team, but then Favre says he doesn’t see guys getting all that excited. All I know is these guys didn’t seem fired up to play against Chad, the Bradyless Pats and and 0-2 Charger team. They need a huge kick-in-the-ass.

  5. BTW: I ran the replay a few times on my DVR last night and the shot on Castillo was clean. TJ started out at Castillo’s shoulder level and then Castillo extended his own arms while standing more upright and pushing TJ downward into his own knee.

  6. I thought the biggest problem was a lack of pass rush. Just a reminder: The Mangini led Jets have been slow starters. Let’s hope that’s the case this year again, and that by the time they come back from the bye, most of the issues will be worked out.

  7. Why can our old friend Chad P. fit in nicely with the Dolphins and beat the Pats badly, while Mr. Favre is having all of these “getting acquainted” problems and we lose badly to the same Pats and now the Chargers?

  8. Rich- Thanks for pointing out the 300lb Gorilla in the room.

  9. The JETS would be 0-3 with chad at QB. Favre is a very good QB. Unfortunately we have, other than Westhof, very mediocre coaches. Mangini included. Why this team can’t play with fire and emotion is beyond me. It is the coaching staffks responsibility to get the team up and ready for a game. And isn’t preseason the time to work out the wrinkles? I don’t buy this “we need the bye week cr?? To get ready. I am tired of “the same old JETS.” And good luck to all you suckers who will pay Woody PSL fees to watch the same old JETS. I am officially done with the JETS coached by Mangini. Call me when we have a head coach with fire and emotion.

  10. Herm was horrible and he has fire and emotion. For the love of god do you self righteous people look in the mirror? Regardless look at the chiefs. There is the fire you want. Act like frickin children.

Wah wah wah don’t pay PSLs I’ll take your seats.

  11. Harlan, I saw a different onsides kick. I saw the ball go through Wright’s hands when he had perfect position. Here’s my risk-reward analysis. Putting San Diego back to the 25 yard line was meaningless. The Jets had to do more than just play it straight against the Chargers and trying to go for a score, which could’ve put the Jets in the lead and kept the Chargers offense on the sideline, was a reasonable risk. Putting pressure on an 0-2 team was necessary and in a game that was looking like a shootout, we all knew the Jets couldn’t match the Chargers’ weapons and it played up the only Jets advantage: special teams. The risk was giving up the field position, which didn’t matter. If you give up an easy FG in a game that takes TDs to win, so what and that’s the real risk with an onsides kick, that a team is easily in FG range. The Chargers still had to go 42 yards for a score and, as it turned out, Rivers’ pass to Chambers would’ve been a TD from any part of the field. So, the rewards: getting the lead, putting pressure on the Chargers, taking the crowd out of the game and letting your defense rest more after a short drive. The risk, you give the other team great field position that makes it easier for an FG. And, in a game, like against the Pats, when you know scoring will be difficult for both teams, an onside kick is foolish…in a shootout on the road? Different story. The rewards outweighed the risks. Also, it’s not like that play was the crucial play in the game…3 first half turnovers that resulted in 21 points sealed the Jets’ fate.

  12. It’s not the coach having fire and emotion. I agree with JAGG, Herm had it and he was awful. The coaches have to instill fire and emotion in the players. Some can and some can’t.

  13. Mangini sucks just a little bit more than coles but not by much. Coles is a Cancer like Randy Moss in oakland but with much less talent.
