How Serious Is Kris Jenkins Back Injury?

by Bassett on September 23rd, 2008 at 10:02 am

Jets Nose Tackle Kris Jenkins was missed last night, but his absence was just one piece of why the Jets lost.  Still, without Jenkins in the game the team struggled to stop the run, or create any real pressure on Philip Rivers, it was like 2006 and 2007 all over again.  Erik Boland of Newsday writes that the Jenkins injury is undetermined as of last night.

Jenkins, by the way, after the game said he wasn’t sure what happened, nor how long he would be out. It was announced in a the press box as a back injury. For what it’s worth, Jenkins didn’t appear to be favoring anything nor did he sound as if he thought it was anything serious. You usually don’t see those guys hanging around the locker room afterward when it is.

I would imagine that when you’re 360 pounds, you’re bound to have some back issues.  What remains to be seen is how much it will limit Jenkins in the weeks going forward. When asked about it, Mangini was his usual reserved self.

“I don’t anticipate it being anything serious.”

The way Jenkins was walking around during the game rather than just staying in the training room, my hope is that it isn’t too serious, but we’ll be the last to know, that’s for sure.  When I hear Mangini respond to the Jenkins injury, I immediately think of Justin Miller’s current injury … and that it hasn’t been anything serious either, yet he still has yet to play a down.

This was the one injury our defense could least afford to have happen. Hoping it’s not serious. With him on the field our defense is solid, with him off, it really is like the last few years all over again.

  2. avatar droseatwork says:

much like jose reyes and the mets as go Jenkins, so goes the defense.

  3. avatar Drew says:

Considering how the mets have crumbled I am not sure I want anyone compared to them right now

  4. avatar subwayfare says:

Has anyone seen Kerry Rhodes this year?

  5. avatar Jeff says:

Hopefully he is alright. Jenkins is the clog in the middle that keeps our D together

  6. avatar swizzle81 says:

I havent seen Rhodes make a play at all this year, yet.

  7. avatar Drew says:

Rhodes made a great play in the Miami game to save a first down on the last drive. Screen to R Williams that he blew up and kept him in bounds. Besides that ……Nada

  8. avatar Ferraro41 says:

I keep reading about they struggled to stop the run, but I just don’t see it.

LT rushed for 67 yards on 26 carries for a 2.6 yard average. Sproles had 5 rushes for 38 (7.6 avg), but it was skewed by one big 21 yard run. Overall, they held the Chargers to 3.1 YPC, which maybe isn’t 1985 Bears-esque, but certainly good enough to win.

They held the Chargers, a good running team, to 4 yards or less on 28 of 32 running plays. There was a single run of more than 7 yards.

The problem for the Jets last night was A) no pass pressure, allowing Rivers to read through his progressions and often throw to his 3rd, and sometimes fourth reciever, and B) the short-to-intermediate pass over the middle, the same area where both Pennington and Cassell had success.

  9. avatar Electric Ham says:

K Rho and Harris have been dissapointing thus far b/c of the high expectations we have for them

  10. avatar George says:

It seems like everyone wants to talk about everything else besides Kris Jenkins and the NT position in this thread. Trust me – we all know that last night was a disaster, and there are plenty of other places to vent.

Let’s talk about Sione Pouha – he’s nowhere near the force that Jenkins is at NT, and is BARELY a serviceable backup. You noticed how quickly the run defense imploded once he took over for Jenkins. I can see him at another position, but he doesn’t have the size to be a full-time NT (kind of like how it was with D-Rob last year).

Is there anyone available on waivers or on the free agent market that we could bring in to shore up the NT position if Big Jinx’s back is a bigger deal then they’ve let on?

  11. avatar Bent says:

True Rhodes was pretty much non-existant yesterday, but was absolutely awesome in the fourth quarter against Miami and made a big third down stop in the backfield in the Pats game, so you are pointing fingers in the wrong direction.

  12. avatar TheRealRK says:

Throw in David Harris along with Kerry Rhodes, still waiting to hear Harris’s name called once

  13. avatar Najy says:

David Harris has been solid and I think he led the team last night in tackles.

What you guys are reffering to are impact plays. I havent seen any impact play from Harris yet. But look at his stats for the year. They are pretty good.

  14. avatar Najy says:

He had 9 solo tackles last night. Id say that is pretty good.

  15. avatar Jose the Jet says:

LETS STAY POSITIVE. I SAW MANY NEW PLAYS IN BRETT’S GAME THAT I HAVEN’T SEEN YET. LC CAUGHT A TD. JONES COULD’VE RAN MORE BUT BECAUSE OF THE SCORE THE RUNNING GAME DISAPPEARED. BETTER PROTECTION AT THE END. NOT THAT IT MATTERED AT THAT POINT. WASHINGTON IS UNBELEIVABLE. HE NEEDS MORE TOUCHES. FEELY IS HERE TO STAY. FORGET NUGENT. HE REALLY LOVES HIS JOB. HE SMASHED SOMEONE FOR THE BALL. AND HE’S A KICKER. WE NEED MORE SPECIAL TEAM PLAYS. PLAYS THAT BRETT DOESNT HAVE TO MEMORIZE.

  16. avatar Lou says:

    Jenkins,

Is such a needed player with this team that if he does not play a game we will likely lose.NT is the most important position in a 3-4. If we do not have the right person we will not be competitive in games. They will kill us running the ball. Like previouse years…

  17. avatar jas says:

    Jose is right!!!
    we need to be positive.
WE POSITIVELY SUCK SO FAR THIS YEAR.
By the way, we were inches from being 0-3. Anybody willing to admit that.
We’ll see cause we have an easier schedule from here out but this could get real ugly. Arizona is not a pushover.

  18. avatar SackDance99 says:

I hope they let Jenkins have a double seat in first class or Woody lets him have the king size bed on his private plane…there’s nothing worse for your back than a 6-hour plane ride. Jenkins is the key and, besides being the anchor of the run D, he’s a beast in the middle of the pass rush.

  19. avatar david i says:

If Jenkins does not play this week, they better look to play more 4-3. As far as anyone else is concerned, all the other players they threw in the middle last night were abominable. Ellis, Pouha, Devito all ended up being driven backwards on play after play.

Like the Pats game, this team did not look prepared last night to stop the passing game. Other notes:
    - Eric Smith needs to be benched.
    - TJ has to come out on passing downs and Leon needs to be in on everyone of them.
    - Leon also needs 10 carries a game.
    - The offensive sets being used lack creativity. Provide easy defense. SD offense sets were very confusing to Jets D. Looked like college pros vs college.
    - D’brick whiffed or was on his back at least three seperate times last night. Mangold even missed pick-ups.
All in all, this game was a huge setback.

And I know nobody wants to say it, but Favre looked old, very old. He looked as frazzled as I have ever seen him.

  20. avatar mbi says:

Jenkins is the key to the defense. I hope he is alright – back problems worry me because they linger – I could see this popping up again, he is not a young guy. One problem I have with the jets so far is that the team plays like a young team but is made up of veteran players. Yes Faneca, Woody, Favre, Jenkins and Pace are all very good players but you have to take into account the learning curve. Which was blatantly obvious with the way favre has been playing – it hasnt been natural, he is thinking too much. On a positive note I think the jets will be a second half of the year monster. This isnt a fantasy roster where you plug guys in, there is something to be said for chemistry and knowledge of the system. Last night was ugly with a capital U, but the Jets need to stay patient.

  21. avatar SackDance99 says:

Favre looked old? He passed for 271 yards, had 3 TDs, ran a couple of sneaks and was sacked a bunch of times. And, he hurt his ankle and still was slinging it.

Also, nobody has stopped the Chargers’ passing game this season. Rivers has stepped up his game and threw some beautiful passes, often in coverage, like the TD pass to Gates. The pass rush didn’t get to him. What I found distressing and has been a Jets problem under Mangini/Sutton is 3rd down defense. The Jets often put the Chargers in 3rd and long or at least in an obvious passing situation, but the Jets D just couldn’t get it done on 3rd down.

Lowery finally looked like a rookie, he had to look back at the QB with Gates in the end zone…but Rivers did throw a perfect pass. Lowery was beaten badly deep on the backbreaker pass to Jackson, welcome to the NFL rookie. Eric Smith was just awful, again. The stumble covering Tolbert was as bad as it gets. I know Elam is a knucklehead, but he plays hard with violence. I’ll take that over bumbling, stumbling Smith.

Could LC give a ****? I just can’t believe he let Cromartie have that INT and TD. Sure, it was pass interference, but instead of being a whiny bitch, how about making sure Cromartie doesn’t score? No way that would have been even a pick if Cotchery was there.

Leon has to get more carries. Also, a bad fumble by TJ…he knew they were going for the strip, how about using those guns for more than show?

And, I know we want Favre to throw at the goal line now, but when its goal-to-go at the 6 inch line, you run. I guess Mangini wanted Favre to get redzone work, but they just gave away 2 easy points.

  22. avatar JCiniello says:

Please fire the coaches they are absolutely horrible.

  23. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Sorry to be a stickler (I hope that word means what I think it means) but does 3 = a bunch. He should have had 5 picks.

  24. avatar Charlie says:

Yesterday just confirmed what I have been saying all along, that Jenkins is the most important acquisition they had this off-season.

as for Favre, think of it this way, if Pennington was still there, would they be worse? Of course not; and it’s certainly feasible they’d be better. Does this mean Pennington is better? Heck no. The problem as I see it is they’ve completely revamped their game plan *because* of Favre. This team was built to Run. They’ve abandoned that philosophy (with one of the fewest rush attempts thus far) because they have Favre. I believe if they play their cards as if they do *not* have Favre and then use him as like a bonus, things will come together.

    {I do realize that the threat of a powerful passing game opens up the running game, but so do powerful o-lineman like Faneca and Woody.}

Next week is their Super Bowl! Yes I know it’s only week 4, but this is as close to a “must-win” as you can have in week 4. A win makes this first quarter of the year almost a wash (exactly what most probably would have projected them to be all things considered).

Come on guys get it together

    J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS

  25. avatar Ed L says:

david harris is supposed to sit in his ally and accumulate tackles…thats it and i believe he accumulated a good amount last nite….

this is a different defense u usually hear more about the olbs then the ilbs

  26. avatar Pat says:

Yes, we held the Chargers to a low YPC average, however it was obvious that when Jenkins exited the game the Jets were getting no push in the middle of that line.

Pouha kind of looked like D-Rob in there — decent enough to hold the point of attack — but not good enough to disrupt anything.

  27. avatar GangGreenin says:

Jets fans listen up, we need enthusiasm. We need enthusiasm as bad as we need Kris Jenkins. Was I the only one who saw our whole team looking dejected from the TJ fumble on? What is the deal? Is management not paying these guys enough? Do they not love the game? I saw a team that looked squeamish, they looked beaten, and they weren’t communicating. Favre had a terrible day, but it’s not as if anyone turned this game off when the Jets showed hope in the 4th quarter. That tells me that this game wasn’t out of reach until the last field goal for SD. What the real team in green needs is a healthy attitude. Of course it would help if we also had a healthy NT.

A few things for the record:
    -Stuckey is the man.
-HOW DID WE CUT MARCUS HENRY?? I guarantee this guy ends up on another team making plays. Look at Derrick Ward, LaMont Jordan, even Pennington for Christ’s sake.
-5 wide was a welcomed surprise. Granted, San Diego went into the ‘bend and not break’ defense-the same defense that lost them their first two games this season-but can we see some of this set in the beginning of a game.
-Send Kerry Rhodes on the blitz.
-TO ALL JETS PLAYERS: GET AMPED UP AND HAVE SOME FUN OUT THERE WOULD YOU PLEASE.
-Abram Elam in the lineup, helping to make running backs pay each and every play.

    Nuff said?

  28. avatar SackDance99 says:

JAGG, I should’ve added “or hit” which was more my point and he was sacked or hit a “bunch” of times (3 sacks + 5 hits = 8 = bunch) . And, Favre missed 12 passes (30-42)…I don’t think 5 of those 12 were obviously going to be picks. Football is an unforgiving game. The Cromartie and Weddle INTs were great individual plays and only the Weddle INT was a poorly thrown ball, which was not thrown in coverage, so it was not an obviously risky pass. Coles was in front of the DB and should’ve either caught or prevented the INT. The incompletion Cromartie let go through his hands was the worst throw by Favre, and that wasn’t an INT. Go figure.

  29. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I was refering to the three balls that bounced off of defender’s hands. Coles should have done something to avoid that one INT. So on the idea that Coles does soemthing Favre should have thrown 4 ints. With only one of the ones he did throw counting.

  30. avatar JoeBoo says:

GET LEON INTO THE GAME!!! HE IS A PLAYMAKER!

  31. avatar Mike G says:

Could LC give a ****? I just can’t believe he let Cromartie have that INT and TD. Sure, it was pass interference, but instead of being a whiny bitch, how about making sure Cromartie doesn’t score? No way that would have been even a pick if Cotchery was there.

    Sackdance,
If you watch a replay of that play you would see that Coles thought Cromartie just broke up the pass and had no idea he picked it because his back was turned. Once Coles notices he immediately started sprinting after him, and he obviously cant catch cromartie even if he didnt have the 10 yard head start.
That play was also clearly pass interference, but wither way, cant blame coles there.

  32. avatar JCiniello says:

Jenkins is great but it doesn’t matter who you have in the game with these coaches. They are terrible.

  33. avatar The Ed(itor) says:

I heard the METS are blaming Willie Randolph for this year’s collapse.

  34. avatar junior says:

eric smith needs to be off this team he is terrible he was burned in all 3 games for scores even though he fell last night on that td he is the pits i would much rater see barrett at safety then him and i absolutely hate barrett as for jenkins we need him healthy but we knew what we were getting with all of these pickups this offseason my ideal scenario would be a trade for anquan boldin and gabe watson or alan branch or even bring this guy in walter thomas i am from new york and i have read about this guy he was on new orleans preseason roster in 06 i mean they say he is lazy but pioha is a mutt and this guy seems like if he gets a chance he will be motivated

  35. avatar Reprocity says:

Coleman made all of his tackles 3 yards too late as a result of getting pushed off the line. He’s got the same vandtage point as the LBs! Coleman and Smith need something?

  36. avatar pat d says:

When Jenkins went out why did we continue to run the 3-4.

  37. avatar subwayfare says:

The Giants were 1-2 at this point last year, including a 35-13 bludgeoning by your own Brett Favre and the Packers. Everyone was calling Eli a bust and wanting to fire Coughlin. It’s a long season.

    Bent-

Sorry to pick on Rhodes. But when an offense scores 41 points the biggest stars should shoulder some of the blame. To be fair the D was playing against SD and their own offense in the first half and it was steep uphill from there.

  38. avatar papa bear says:

the same reason motorcycles don’t become bicycles when the engine breaks.

  39. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Good one papa bear! I was disappointed by D’Brick. This is the second game in a row where he got flat out beat during a goal line stand. What’s with this guy? He played much better his rookie season! Favre, Leon and J-Co looked like they were the only ones that still wanted to win that game in the 4th. Where’s the attitude on this team?

  40. avatar david i says:

Sackdance99…yes, Brett looked old last night. His numbers came in garbage time chasing a team ahead by a considerable amount, who were playing soft D and allowed everything underneath. He certaintly didn’t look young and verile out there, the way Rivers did. Come to think of it, he looked the same last week against the Pats and besides two plays from the Dolphins game, he has looked more like an old man playing a young guys game. A bit fragile, very uncomfortable, obviously unsettled and chasing his youth. I think he much rather be home collecting the $20M+ marketing dollars the Packers offered him. I know 99 out of 100 people would have taken that deal. I hope he finds the fountain of youth soon!

  41. Like it or not, Favre is still getting comfortable.
Jenkins going out was major. The D looked completely different without him. My feeling is that this can be a good team, but there is little or no depth at a few key positions, Jenkins being exhibit A. If he can’t go for any length of time or we lose someone at another position where we are thin depth wise, it could be a very long, sad season.

  42. avatar hank/naples says:

    david i:

How righy you are. Only a blind man or duys like pat d, Johnnt Styne, SackDance 99 and the prEd(itor) see the game through Brett colored glasses. You are wasring you time asking them to see Farve as he really is: a self centered old man that feels he is bigger and smarter than the team and would NEVER take the playbook home to study., it’s bellow his dignity.

  43. avatar hank/naples says:

    david i;
Sorry for the type-os. My computer and my typing need some major help.

  44. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

jenkins is an elite dt in the league. unfortunately we have no depth behind him. we have a bunch of guys who try real hard and can watch game film but cant make a play. devito, pouha, cj mosely, kassell, matt chatam, drew coleman, eric smith, the list goes on. this was mangini idea to bring in these smart, tough, slow guys who play. remember anthony schiegel in the third rd? guys out of football! sometimes you have to go with the guy who got caught with the deans daughter but makes plays all over the field (i.e L Coles but hes on the s#!+ list after his disgraceful effort on that pick mon nite)
also schottenhiemer has no flow in his playcalling. the jets will pick up a couple first downs and you are just waiting for that slow developing predictable play that results in a sack, loss or penalty. he is the worst ive ever seen at gameplanning against any kind of 34 blizting team. it pathetic what a hard time they have picking up blitzers or hitting hot recievers.also can we please stop with using t. jones like hes LT. what in gods names is he doing split out running routes. he almost cost the jets another six on top of the one he coughed up on the ground. this guy should touch the ball 15-18 times a game tops, and be in a two back system with neon leon wash.
its too early to panic, if this team can find any kind of flow and continuity on offense, they have the players to make some noise. if the defense can get a little more aggressive and creative with their blitz and coverage packages, they can be a top 10 defense. only problem is our coach and coordinators are too much brains and not enough guts, too much play calling based on statistics not down and distance and feel for the game

  45. avatar Najy says:

I just want to make one quick observation…

In 2005, Buffalo Bills finished the season at 5-11.
In 2005, the NYJ finished the season at 4-12.

Both teams proceeded to fire their respected head coaches and began the 2006 seasons with a new beginning.

Buffalo bills record in the new era:

    2006 – (7-9)

2007 – (7-9).. They lost their last 3 games and missed the playoffs.

2008 – (3-0).. Ranked 6 in the NFL power rankings and are favored to win the division.

New York Jets record in the new era:

2006 – (10-6).. Made the playoffs and lost in the first round.

2007 – (4-12).. 2 of the wins came against the 1-15 dolphins and 1 against the KC Chiefs.Team regressed and was a major disappointment. No Qb. Terrible O line. Terrible D.

2008 – (1-2) New Qb. Revamped O line. Revamped D line. No Chemistry. 180 million spent in the offseason. Many questions need to be answered.

Again, I am not being biased but look at the path that the Buffalo Bills have taken as opposed to the Jets. We both started in the same spot and the Bills seam like they are way ahead of us in terms of the rebuilding process. The Jets are still rebuilding while the Bills look like they are ready to contend.

Be honest with yourselves and ask why is this so? Why are we still rebuilding?

  46. avatar Najy says:

Everyone needs to stop making excuses and someone needs to start coming up with answers.

Jets should have never been put in this situation with all these new players and a qb who has been on the team for 6 weeks if players were developing and being properly coached. Players are suppose to develop.

I head Bryan Thomas this evening saying that he is still learning the OLB position. Its been 3 years!! How long does it take to learn? How long does it take to develop? How long does it take to rebuild? When will we start winning?

After last night and today, I am going to question everything about our organization and what they stand for. Someone needs to explain why we dont have anything and havent won a championship in 40 years.

Someone explain… If players are developing, why do we need to go out into the market and upgrade all of our D line, O line and Qb.

  47. avatar Najy says:

I am just really frustrated. After last night, it kind of hit me that this is looking like last season. Sure, we have “talent” that has been developed by other coaches but we have no chemistry and we are in shot gun from 3 inches off the goal line.

Im sorry but I cant take another season like last season. This is still a very long season but that can be a very good thing or it can be a very bad thing for us fans.

  48. avatar pat d says:

    Najy

    great points

  49. avatar hank/naples says:

    Najy:

    It’s really not that complicated. I’ll try to explain;

In one word, it is called CHEMISTRY

Chemistry is the the glue that holds the team, any team together. It is the bond that make all its menbers, the total , be greater than the sum of its parts. I am sure you must start with some strengths but it is that undenieable, invinsible confidence when you know that your teammates, all of them, are there in lock step with you all the way and that all of you are capable of overcomming whatever challenges you are given in the field of battle. That force will surely be victoroius, even sometimes under impossible odds.

    This chemistry,

  50. avatar hank/naples says:

Sorry, my computer screwed up again.

This chemistry was starting to form during the summer, OTA’s, camp, when it was suddenly interrupted by bringing in Farve. Unfortunately it has taken longer than expected to get it back and I sincerely feel we wont get it back with Farve. Did you hear the comment last night about Farve NEVER bringing the playbook home to study it untill a couple of nights ago? That comment is part of the reason i don’t think we will get that chemistry back.

  51. avatar Najy says:

    hank/naples,

The reason we dont have chemistry is because Mangini failed to build our team with free agents. Chemistry is not built in 6 weeks.

Hopefully, this team can build chemistry soon and Mangini can learn from his mistakes because we are going to have a long season if we dont.

Understand that it is very hard for me and most fans to remain positive after the last 2 outings by the Jets. We beat the dolphins… Whoo hooo…

We have a couple of “easy” games coming up so I hope we can win a few games, gain some momentum, and hope for the best. Because after last night, there is no logic behind thinking that the Jets will make the playoffs aside from hope.

Hope that they can some how gel and utilize all the acquired talent on our team.

  52. avatar Fonzie says:

People forget that it was Chad Pennington in 2006 that helped beat the pats and stole one in Buffalo. Man do we miss him now. I think we should start asking Woody some questions on why he disrupted the CHEMISTRY of this team. He needs to worry more about his team than selling PSL’s and looking good for business. Mangini is trying to work with what he has. He has been doing so for the last three years. Sometimes he is successful sometimes he’s not but his style of coaching and what he brings to the Jets should never be questioned. I think Farve is so lost right now he doesnt know whether to leave or to play. The team is out of synch because of him and he is the newest jet player so he has the most pressure on him. He was paid all this money for the pressure and now he can’t handle it. All of you Farve lovers need to get your heads checked.

  53. avatar hank/naples says:

    Najy:

I think you are blaming Mangini unfairly, tell you why..

We got all our free agents in March, therefore it has been 6 months Not 6 weeks and that is more than enough time to start blending together. Farve came on board about 6 weeks, however why did he start complaining openly about the playbook do you think that attitude builds chemistry when ALL the new players (about 15) were forced to learn and be responsible for ALL the plays ?

  54. avatar Fonzie says:

    Najy:

You forget to remember that he had the same turnout with chemistry in 2006 and looked what happened. What i am saying is that Chad developed chemistry with the team ever since he was drafted and he had that bond with the team until he left. I dont see Farve willing to bond with the team. Remember Chad when he would be the first player in the building and the last one out. He will always be a Jet no matter who he plays for just like farve will always be a packer no matter who he plays for.

  55. avatar Najy says:

Yes, but Chad has his downside as well. I am not blaming the free agent pick ups on Mangini but I am making some points about developing and coaching players.

I guess we just have to wait and see if Favre can get on the same page as the team.

  56. avatar Najy says:

If you look at the progress over the last 3 years, it doesnt look good.

Its one thing to draft players in the first 4 rounds of the draft but it is another thing to develop project players that contribute to the team.

Again, i think we need to start asking questions and wonder why we have nothing.

  57. avatar Najy says:

I am torn between how I feel. Its like a roller coaster of emotions right now.

  58. avatar pat d says:

    hank/naples
“This chemistry was starting to form during the summer, OTA’s, camp, when it was suddenly interrupted by bringing in Farve.”

We disn’t have chemistry at QB. We had crap. Mangini and company thought KC would win a QB competition. They were wrong.

  59. avatar hank/naples says:

    pat d:

See pat, your comment is a perfect example of why it’s dumb to ask the Farve koolaide drinkers to see the real cause of the Jets biggest problem. I could stay here and give ten solid reasons why you are dead wrong but you only need to read ALL, not some, but the comments of ALL the Dolphin Players and see how their offense played the Pats with what Pennington brought to that team. Sorry Pat you are dead, dead, wrong and you know it !!!!

    PS Fonzies comments above

  60. avatar hank/naples says:

    pat d;

I wll give you one more reason why and you are soo wrong:

During monday nights commentary, someone commented , and I’m quoting Farve, that during that week was ” THE FIRST TIME IN HIS LIFE HE HAD BROUGHT THE PLAYBOOK HOME” That, to me shows what a friggin genius this man is.

In contrast, and again I am quoting, “Penningto took the playbook with him on the plane on his flight down to Miami” What a dummy eh?

Why do you think the difference in team performances against the same opponent? Or is it now that Miami has a better team than the Jets. Don’t answer that, I know the standard head in the sand response : Better RB, better CS, Better everything BUT NEVER a better QB for their respective teams, PERIOD !!

  61. avatar Najy says:

    hank/naples,

I am looking at the broader picture. I dont want to pick at 1 position and dwell…. But after 3 years in this regime, why are we in this situation?

Correct me if I am wrong, but after 3 years under Tangini, the team still has no identity and after MNF, they look like we are heading in the wrong direction.

Again, I am not dwelling on any 1 position because the team is composed of more than 1 player. Just think broader picture and how this organization has not produced under Mangini. I dont care whose fault it is but who usually takes the blame in this situation?

    Najy;

In reading all the comments (except the extreme Mangini/Pennington haters) for the last 7-8 months, and yours are one of the better , impartial ones, I saw that you touched on several issues on why the Jets appear dysfuntional today. Withou getting psychoanalytical about it the simplest way I can answer your question is this way:

Look back to training camp when the team and all the new players were energized and groups were hanging out together, studying in each others homes,
practicing and watching film after hours every player, NOT JUST THE QB’s,were pompeting, and on and on and on. Remember the electricity, the hopes, the ferver that the players (and the fans) felt? Well Najy, thats called “team building” or chemistry.

Now imagine all of a sudden out of nowhere someone drops a force and the all the hype that makes him bigger than you, bigger than the team hell bigger than the city, what do you think would happen to that chemistry that was fragile but building?
And additionally the force demands new plays, pages ripped out of the playbook(some players call it the bible) different music during camp, etc. What do you think that would do to your chemistry.
I’m also sure some players resent the fact that he openly said he din’t want to play for the Jets.

Najy, Forget Farve, remember that we were all hoping and pulling for a winning season and the playoffs out of camp. I for one predicted that the Jets would go 10-6 and the team would get close to our sack record. I also said that Farve would give us 1 at most 2 additional wins this year. On that one I think I will be wrong but we will still win 10 games and still make the play offs.
What i regret the most is WE LOST A YEARS WORTH OF TEAM BULDING and that really, really hurts.

Enough with the Chad vs. Brett talk already! Chad ain’t here. This team is not the KC Chiefs. there is plenty to work with here. Just gotta coach better and execute better. That’s all. Listen, if we executed on the 3 running plays, and executed on the onside kick, and executed on some kickoffs, we wouldn’t be having these tired discussions about Chad vs. Brett. The root cause is not chemistry, it is poor execution of the plan! Fix that and everything else falls into place.
