Mangini Defends Onside Kick

by Bassett on September 24th, 2008 at 8:03 am

Yesterday on a con call with the press Jets Coach Mangini defended his onside kick.

“In that situation I would definitely do it again — if it was the same situation.  We had six players over there outside the numbers. They had one. We had two blockers for their one player, and we didn’t execute as well as we should have in terms of just sheer numbers.

“It was a really good situation and Jay [Feely] does a nice job with those kicks. I thought the kick was excellent. The percentage of getting an onside kick that’s a surprise onside kick is significantly higher than not.”

“One of the things that we outlined going into the game is when we wanted to do it.  All of those things came together. The look was right. We felt good about the kick. It was the right time in the game in terms of momentum, and now you’ve got to go and execute it. But after looking at it on tape, I would do same thing again.”

    Basset-
Can you give us a break. It’s way too early to get everybody upset again. I already posted on the Henry post this AM and can’t cut and paste so you guys should look over there.

If your Defense is playing great, a good call. But our defense wasn’t playing great so another dumb Mangini call.

Who’s opinion really matters here? The dumb fan eating chips and dip on his couch or the best special teams coach in Westhoff?? Case closed…..it just didnt work!

Also Ed?? How was our D playing badly when turnovers led to the points at that time??

I like the call, would have liked it better at 7-0 after the Barrett TD.

I liked the call as well.

Good call just didn’t work out in our favor.

I liked the call too — Wright could (maybe should) have had it — agree that we should trust Westhoff here as well — just bad luck.

Bad Call – agree with J. Howard. You have to make a great offense work for the points. You DON’T give the ball to a red hot Rivers in that part of the field, bad risk. They were still in the game at that point. Common football sense says bad call. You make the opponent earn the points. PERIOD!

Terrible call; disgusted he says he’d do it again in that circumstance. It was the type of call a 2nd rate college team does to try and beat a top 10 club. It’s admitting “we don’t have the personnel to just line up and play straight against you.” Even had it worked I would not like it. I love Westhoff, I love that he wants to do it, but that’s when your HC has to overrule and play smart. Mangini’s in over his head.
