Mangini on Jenkins Return
The defense clearly missed him on Monday night, but according to Eric Mangini, you should expect to see Kris Jenkins back on the field Sunday …
“There were times last night where we thought Kris could come back in. It just didn’t quite get to the point where we were ready to do that. He was close throughout course of the game and so I’m hoping that with time and treatment that will move along well.”
Hoping? With a paper thin defensive line without Jenkins, and a team with a resurgent running attack coming up this Sunday let’s both hope that Jenkins plays this Sunday in a back-to-the-wall game.

I’ll get this puppy started. Whether we fans like it or not these guys (Tangini) may be in over their heads. 48 pts, 48 pts, 48pts………. Get off of Favre’s back until the defense can stop somebody.
AND, for my ex wife——-how about those 3 runs against the Pats. We could have won that game. Period. Oh, and Graham said in the Post he has been over coached and it negatively affected him. Ya think! He was real good when he got here.
And who is Jenkins back up? Feely?? Graham??
I agree that these coaches are over matched and it shows giving up 48 points to the Chargers. MANGINI MUST GO!!!!
You two know nothing about the game of football. Only what espn tells you.
Greenguy
That what my ex wife used to say too. 5 kickers 5 QBs including Smith. Priceless.
And for the record I do not watch ESPN ever. I hate it.
AND, don’t get mad at us because the Jets opened the season playing badly 3 games in row. I am every bit the fan (40 years) as anyone. I had the same high expectations as everyone. It is very unsettling watching this unfold.
I am hoping for the best.
Kenwin Cummings is bagging groceries somewhere. He was so great no one cared what happened to him.
Maybe Graham is looking for an excuse, because he couldn’t grasp the concept of a coffin corner? Westhoff overcoached him huh? How many kickers would love that opportunity? Favre helped our defense get shredded. He was a joke until garbage time. If not for the Charger’s secondary’s inability to catch (Way too much possession goin on) he would have thrown 5 ints.
How can anybody still defend Favre? This isn’t the 90s he is a shadow of that man.
So sick of you two half wits regurgitating the same unenlightened information. Watch the games. learn a formation, hell play madden.
I’m not unsettled. Anyone who thought Favre was a good idea was wrong. He will get numbers, but I’m not convinced he can win. They were 4-12 we are right on target for the year I expected. If we lose to Arizona then I have an issue. The Chargers whipped the Bronco’s d too. The Broncos are undefeated. The Patriots game loosened up play calling and for that I’m grateful. Its week 3.
Plus if we could cut Hodges we would have and I’ll take Nuge anyday over Feely. Enough to sacrifice a man who no one in the league went after.
jas … how about the 14 points Favre created for the other team off turnovers? OK then …
If we could have stopped them it could have been 3, or 6 etc. And even if not, how many games do you win giving up 34? I am more worried about shotty and his game plans. They just don’t seem to work week after week.
Don’t forget TJ’s fumble either that is 7 more. San Diego has a stacked offense while we are trying to develop a stronger D. Lowry ws playing his 3rd game and we can’t seem to find a second safety for our lives.
A little food for thought…
I am looking at the broader picture. I dont want to pick at 1 position and dwell…. But after 3 years in this regime, why are we in this situation?
Correct me if I am wrong, but after 3 years under Tangini, the team still has no identity and after MNF, they look like we are heading in the wrong direction and another lost season. It is still early and we can only HOPE that things get better.
Again, I am not dwelling on any 1 position because the team is composed of more than 1 player. Just think broader picture and how this organization has not produced under Mangini. I dont care whose fault it is but who usually takes the blame in this situation?
Jas-
What is priceless are the know-it-all-posters who berate and name-call anyone who criticizes the coaching. Y’all know so much that you defend a coaching staff (Westhoff not included) which will waste Favre’s only year on the team and finish the Jets 6-10.
Relax folks. I’m down on this team as much as the next guy but let’s not clean our the liqour cabinet yet. It could be ok.
I agree that Mangini is an awful coach and that both coordinators are more equipped to rip tickets than to call plays.
That being said, we have a soft schedule and enough talent to possibly overcome it all (As in ‘06).
To beat the horse to death, when the schedules were released and we all were doing our predictions prior to camp- this is exactly where we thought we’d be!
They must beat Arizona. Home game against what is an inferior team. Sure, they have a great passing attack and may win a division but it’s the NFC West folks. This is the must win game the Jets need. Sure, Patriots and Chargers would have been nice to beat but they didn’t. Let’s move passed it. Beat the Cardinals- go into bye 2-2 and sort this out. Get healthy, have a collaboration period with Favre and as usual- do something with the Defensive play calling.
But it’s not the end. 2-2 isn’t bad, especially going into a very soft 2nd quarter of the schedule.
A bad second year of the regime didn’t help. They overvalued talent. A rookie mistake. When you hire young coaches mistakes will happen. It isn’t like we lost to the Lions and the Chiefs either.
Bunch of chicken littles.
Chris,
We are the inferior team. Arizona finished wtih a better record then the Jets last year, plus they hvae a better record than us this year.
I am tired of people saying that we have an easy schedule. Teams look at us as if we are a win in their column.
What makes us any better than the Cardinals or what gives us the right to say that we should beat them?
The Editor,
It is not the coaching staff to blame for Monday’s night loss. Give San Diego credit with their offensive line playing the way they did. The loss on Monday night was in the trenches. The San Diego offensive line held our defensive front in check to allow Rivers to keep passing the ball. Right now our defensive line is lacking the beef to create full penetration. Now Farve needed to pick up where the defensive line couldn’t and that is why we paid him so much money. You know someone who is being paid so much money should be working twice as much in a new team to learn the system than someone who has been cut from that team and signed with another who is being paid half as much. That goes to show you what type of players we have and had on this team who are paid but break their back to help get wins. Farve’s dream of playing football in his backyard with his old teammates is over. Reality is finally getting to him and he is so dumb in the head that he can’t learn the playbook and knows all the pressure is on him to make the offense produce. You are looking for someone to blame, blame the new guy who is self centered and lost right now.
JD- BTW I berate people who defend Favre and always hit the panic button, but can’t provide any new information. We all know we have 4 kickers no one is happy about it, but the problem is fixed after the bye. Do you think Mangini, Schott, and
Sutton dance around a maypole singing how they have to give up prospects because kickers, frickin kickers are getting hurt. We are the same old Jets, because of the same old New York mentality. The Giant’s were firing Coughlin too.
Najy,
You are forgetting you must have been one of those fans who loved watching the Jets in 2006. So why would you turn around all of a sudden on Tangini? You see when the Jets start to lose you start pointing fingers especially when we had a difficult season last year. We lost year based on the fact that our lines on both sides were very weak and our personnel problems. Our team looks very different now than it did in 2006 but looking at the big picture Mangini has a big problem on his hands and that is containing brett farve something no one else has ever done in his coaching. He needs to buy into this system but with a different attitude and that is what I am waiting for but I know that it wont happen because he is so selfish.
JustAGreenGuy-
Point taken. I’m just a little fatigued by the dismissal of posters who want to vent some frustration. Isn’t that what this blog is for – not just to heap plaudits on Mangini, Schott and Sutton. The Jets spent, what, like 100 million dollars to improve the quality on the field. Sure, players aren’t making plays and the coaches aren’t putting them in a position to make plays. But in all honesty, didn’t we all expect more from this squad even so early in the season?
Najy.
First, I’ll start with the part I agree with- teams absolutely look at us as a win. We have almost always been and til further notice, will always be the ‘easy’ part of anyone’s schedule.
That being said, on paper- we are not the inferior team. We have a better offensive line, better running game, better defensive line, better linebackers and better secondary.
They have Warner- who for now, based on the 3 games only, I will give the nod to over Favre. And they clearly have the better receiving core. Other than that, where are they strong? They have one good player at each level of the Defense- Berry, Dansby and Wilson. But the other guys are still learning. Dockett, Hayes, Cromartie, Rolle are all nice developmental players but they are young and I don’t think match our youngsters. Rhodes is every bit of good as Wilson, I like Pace as much as Dansby and when healthy Jenkins is better than Dockett. So, I think we are superior to their top defender at each level and I’d take our young defenders; Harris, Lowery, Revis and a mix of veterans; Ellis, Coleman, Thomas, Barton over their group.
So other than the vertical passing game, on paper- I think the Jets are the better group. And then we’re the home team. They are averaging 299 yds per game on the road (very mediocre for their offense) while yielding 307 yds on the road on defense- against San Fran and Wash! Not exactly offensive powerhouses.
So- I think we come out strong and beat a team we should beat. Also, don’t tell me we shouldn’t beat KC, Cincy and Oak with 2 of them at home. This team is capable of that!
And to make it clear- despite my continued hope for this team and back and forth frustrations, etc. the coacing staff has got to go.
I think we can run this to 5-2 and make some noise but regardless of the outcome, this is not the appropriate staff.
It’s not about our record, or that we lost, yada yada yada. It is about the way we lose! And to be quite honest, after I pay this outrageous PSL bill- I want a coach who can actually be friggin candid on a Sunday/ Monday/ Tuesday!!!!!!
The Pats loss hurt me, because it was a division loss and Brady was out. Even with the money we spent we aren’t ready to play on the Chargers level. We need to play mistake free football to win those games we haven’t. The fact is we grow or die. Arizona is an excellent judge of our talent. If we lose this one I’ll be pissed.
Fonzie,
“We lost year based on the fact that our lines on both sides were very weak and our personnel problems.”
I agree. That was the main issue with our team last year but what does that say about our coaching. Whose job is that to get that straighten out? You cant throw away a season because of that. Thats how coaches lose their jobs man. That is not a valid excuse.
Look, I am grateful for 2006 and I am not calling for anyone to be fired. But we have to stop buying into the B.S. and start winning. We were 4-12 last year and are 1-2 this year. Dont tell me that you believe in our unproven coaching and philosophy. What have they done for you to earn your trust?
Chris,
You are overlooking the “chemistry fact” and the coaching.
JustAGreenGuy-
Fair enough.
did we BLITZ ONCE on monday night!!?? THIS week is a MUST WIN GAME! come oooonnnnn BYE week!
Gentlemen,
Boy is it easy to sit and judge. 1-2 isn’t the worst place to be after Miami, New England, and San Diego.
Oh and Najy, in regards to your post about our being the inferior team, we have Arizona’s best defensive player from last year and they’ve got the same problem (age) at quarterback that we do. Also, resorting to comparing records this early in the season is proof that you really don’t know your football. If I was to use your logic I’d be saying we went to San Diego as the favorite.
Let us not forget that when David Barrett pick 6′d we were cheering like banshees. I’ll say it over and over again, we were in this game until the last FG was made. We lose our nose tackle and San Diego still has to hit Buster Davis-who is not a guy that any team will spend even 1% of their practice time getting ready for-to convert on third downs. If this game was this ugly and we had won, who would you all complain about then?
Having said all of this, and taking into account that I’ve surely pissed some of you off, can we just be fans already?! As a Phillies fan and a Jets fan I’ve dealt with the losses season in and season out, but as the belief continues, the wins will come. I’m assuming most of you all are Jets-Mets fans and look at how the Mets play in big situations. Maybe it’s hard to win for the fans that will sell you right on down the river for one or two mistakes.
Believe in your team.
Keep the QB’s, Favre may want out of the NFL after the season, especially if we don’t make playoffs, he is not having fun behind an OLine that is struggling, WR’s that run into coverage, and a grounded run game- upside though we are scoring points and are learning what it takes to win, yes we are 1-2 but, the playbook opened up “this week” for the down field passing game, and we didn’t run the same play 10 times with different fronts and a big positive note, now we know our weakness’s on D which will help with a schedule that lightens up to make some adjustments and hopefully the coaches will use a 4-3 scheme when Jenkins is not in.
GangGreenin,
What I was eluding to was… What have we done to call the Cards an inferior team to the Jets? We are ini the same boat as them. If anything, they had the better record last year and this year. Think abou it.
San Diego was in the AFC Championship last year after a slow start so this was expected of them. That is a big difference.
Najy.
Excellent point. I agree and that is why, all the predictions, evaluation, etc. is done ‘on paper’. There really isn’t a way to quantify and say ‘ Arizona has better chemistry than the Jets’. Do I think their coaching is better? Possibly but I’m not impressed with their 8-8 last yr, just like I’m not with their 2-1 start now. They beat 3 winning teams all yr, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Cleveland- all at home!
And they have beaten San Fran and Miami this year. I believe their coaching is up in the air, just like ours. And maybe they are more in touch as a team but I can’t predict that. Talent wise, as an overall team, I believe we are superior. And then being at home, not only do I think this is a must win but I think it’s one that we do win.
But again, our coaching stinks. We just need the leadership on the field to come through and deliver. And the schedule is easy, so hopefully that can mask the issues. I want Mangini gone but I also want a playoff berth.
And I want to cheer and I want to have faith in my team but its hard and so deflating after a game like that on MNF where we got embarrased on national TV.
Its hard to be optimistic after the 2 outings by the Jets and nothing to look forward to except that fact that “they will gel down the line.”
I agree with GangGreenin- its early in the season to make adjustments and to change the direction of the season, we are down not out- coaching errors are evident, but there is a method to the madness, this is a need to win week to set the pace for the feeling of a hunt during the bye week- 500 is not bad at this point.
I will once again try and help the fans that seem to have any knoweldge. We are 1-2 after 3 games. We all would have taken this at the start of the season realizing the offense would struggle and put the defense it bad spots with turnovers and penalties until Favre and the WR’s got into rythym? Which it has!!! How has that changed?? Because Brady got hurt? Because the Phins beat up the Pats last week? If we are 3-5 by week 9 then start bitching….If we beat Arizona at home on Sunday (which we better) we are right where we need to be to make a run in the AFC after the Bye week
Chris,
Again, all we beat is Miami this year. And last year, we beat them twice and beat KC once. That is pathetic on our part and we cant talk about another team.
I think we just favor ourselves.
Ganggreenin-
I guess if meaning by ‘in the game’ the Jets were ONLY down by two touchdowns…
If Favre can’t get it going after week 6, I expect a new QB in for the Jets…
Najy-
I hear your point and have to say that I can agree with your opinion. MNF is a big stage and I worried we weren’t ready for it; what I wanted, hoped for and if I was a religious man would have prayed for, was that we were. Look at the results, we saw 5 wide from Shotty, who we would have been lucky to see Keller on the field from had we not been throttled early in this game. Also, half the battle for me was trying not to want to kill Tony “Comb-Over”keiser. This guy is just unbelievable, saying random thoughts for no reason interrupting the guys who actually know what they’re doing.
And, JD you hit the nail on the head, that’s precisely what I meant. In the game = a chance to win.
Jet fans with expectations? I must have stepped into another dimension. We were 4-12 last year with an aging, oft-injured QB on the downswing, backed up by a slow-developing prospect and we replaced huge pieces on both lines and at LB. There were bound to be chemistry issues even before bringing in a new QB at the very end of training camp. In my most optimistic fantasies I imagined that we’d have to be a little lucky not to fall out of contention before it came together and produced results. Could some all-time-great, supercoach have made the pieces fit together better and faster? Possibly. Where is he?
Personally, I didn’t buy into the “Mangenious” label in ‘06 and am just as immune to the “Mangini Must Go!” theory in ‘08. BB got run out of Cleveland after his first three seasons, while finding his groove, and then applied the lessons to great effect in NE . Does Mangini have to move on to capitalize on his education in NY? Maybe. But NFL coaches are rarely fired mid-season for good reason: Very complex systems, large rosters of unfamiliar players, etc., make it virtually impossible for a new arrival to improve on what would have been possible with the incumbent. It would probably set the program back even farther. If, at the end of the season, Bill Cowher or any HOF coach expresses interest in coaching the Jets and Mangini still hasn’t made much progress, I’d certainly advocate opening the discussion.
I’m just not giving up on the season yet. Or on Favre, for that matter. No doubt he looked a little old on Monday but he also got his first real, extended action in the passing game and made some things happen. Norv Turner acknowledged he kept the injured LT in because he was afraid the game was never out of reach and that had a lot to do with the guy who was hobbling around behind center.
The offense might be ugly for a while but if the defense (which was playing well before taking a step back against a very desperate, AFC Title runner-up on the road) can step up and hold the fort, there’s a chance things could get interesting. That’s as close to an “expectation” as this 40 year Jet fan can muster.
Catch-22: Will any HOF coach or Bowl Subdivision coach like Les Miles even want the job if Mangini is fired? Mangini needs to win so the Jets don’t have to find that out.
No serious organization, a month before the season opening, releases a winning QB, a proven leader, the heart and soul of the team and replaces him with
1. A QB snubbed by his former team .
2. A QB with a brilliant career but in his twilight.
3. A QB who has a problem with play-books.
4. A QB who may not stick beyond a year.
5. A QB who irrespective of talent will not have the time to establish leadership.
6. A QB who will mess up any kind of chemistry that existed before.
There is a reason why this team has no identity, despite the talent. As Al Pacino in the movie “Every Given Sunday” was saying “..we will all die as individuals”. The season, the team and Jet football was lost the moment the real leader the real glue was released.
I despise Woody and Tannenbaum. Not only they do not stand for something worth rooting for, but they stand for everything that I root against. And if Mangini was also a willing partner in the CRIME I despise him too.
On the other side, I think it is unfair for people to blame Favre. Favre is like a kid, he just enjoys playing football… he wants to have fun. … . He is no JET
After watching some of the game on replay I noticed, much like the last game, that the Jets just do not get the calls that other teams get. Just to point out the Gates TD he clearly pushed off, hard, on Lowery and obviously that helped SD. In the first game a holding call on Mangold was invisible. The pass interference and non call in the NE game also pissed me off. Not to harp on that because it sounds like whining but seriously when things like officiating start going your way that is when you turn into the Pats. Maybe with some respect some calls will come but when they go the other way it really stacks the deck.
And regarding Miami, who we did beat twice…they beat NE so any presumptions about who should do what in terms of win/loss goes out the window right there.
I still think the team has talent and the coaching is learning how the new offense works best. The D looked solid though when Jenk was in there so that is an enormous plus. The Jets are stopping the run but if they don’t start protecting the routes over the middle on 3rd and long they might as well not show up. I swear I almost smashed the HDTV watching that happen over and over, week in and week out.
The run game is also not bad but this is the first time I am down on T Jones. They said the Bears would love to have him back…but that was before Matt Forte started tearing it up as a rookie. TJ is ok as a workhorse but is by no stretch of the imagination someone who the opposing D worries about. I think the Jets will draft a RB next year wherever they are. Several of the RBs drafted this year are sensational talents…where has Keller been? I know he can be good but if he doesn’t get the ball what a waste.
RK-
The Pats receivers get away with holding like a motherf$#@er on their bubble screens. Seriously. It’s crazy.
And, sadly, I’m with you on TJ. Though everyone in the league thought it was the steal of the century he just doesn’t seem to have much pop or vision at the start of the play.
Great now that you showed us how much you despise the Jets and coaches you no longer have to post anything since it would certainly be a waste of your time seeing as though you can’t root for them but only against them. This is called thejetsblog because Jets fans come here.
That wasn’t meant for you subwayfare
Forget last year Najy. We have different players. And it’s not just money spent- Jenkins is a clear stud, Dansby is getting after it, Faneca is a great run blocker and let’s still give Favre the benefit to turn it around the next couple of weeks.
My point is let’s not hype up Arizona has this world class team. If there is a franchise more pathetic than ours over the past 30 yrs- it’s the Cardinals! So, at home, we better beat them because we are the better team…on paper.
Could they come here and win 31-14, sure. But if this team plays to it’s capabilities and wants to be taken seriously, we need to win. And not a 20-17 win where Warner had the ball in the last 90 seconds to win.
I want a fist in the mouth, go hard all day kick ass blowout. Sunday Afternoon, I want to feel the excitement we had prior to the Pats game week 2.
Forget what Kornheiser says, this week is Favre’s outcoming. 300 yds, 3 Td’s, making it look easy. And I want to get after Warner all day long and be so physical that those receivers are nervous to catch the ball.
And as a Jets fan, this is what I need to believe. That despite our repeated mistakes and repreated franchise blunders when it comes to coaches- that this is still our year. That the Jets will showcase what they are made of this weekend and go into the Bye riding high. And after that bye, roll through the next 3 undermatched opponents and get us 5-2 into the game against Buffalo. And I want a statement in that game too- that although good Buffalo, you are too young. And Brett and Co. are here to take back what they started and win this damn division!!
This is what I want. And after 22 yrs of heartache it is sure hard to convince myself of that but I’m going to say it. And although Mangini is a bum and I have my worries, this is why we’re fans. To believe. It’s 3 games into the season. So, people like Nikolas and Co. can leave the skepticism to the side.
This is the weekend where it begins boys.
J-E-T-S!! JETS!!! JETS!!!! JETS!!!!!
RK….y
ou lack the attitude to dictate to anyone, what to do or not. Subservient and obedient people like you.. just listen. So, before you post again, run a penalty lap…
One thing I have learned from watching the NFL for many years is that it usually takes 4 games before anyone knows who is good and who is bad. I read some the reports from San Diego after the game monday and they were happy for the win but the media out ther had many problems with the game the Chargers played. Special teams beakdowns, Phillip RIvers also got away with a couple of balls that could have been intercepted, etc.
Again, we all knew that with all of the new players it was going to take time to jell. Personally, I’m expecting the Jets to look like a real team by the 5th game. If they don’t, I’ll start finding fault then.
Let’s see, the Jets go down and beat the Dolphins with no kicker and then lose to the teams that were in last year’s AFC Championship Game (and both were facing “statement” games). The Jets are 1-2 and the sky is falling? I’m as concerned as the next guy, but let’s see what happens against the Cards. A win and the Jets are 2-2 with 2 of their 3 toughest games in the rearview mirror.
Thanks to all those who wrote in today. Atleast we’re past the we’re sooooooooooooooooooooooo close garbage.
I am a die hard fan who has never posted “get rid of Mangini”. But, I am also not a moron who can watch without blinders. I am not a basher (but 5 kickers,4 QBs etc come on) but there is (i think Najy said it) a weird non personality to this team. No spark, something not right. I am glad everybody is worked up because we are all fans, and have our own opinions. But the team has not looked good yet.
I haven’t said i had the reason, but there is no doubt this team is not sharp in any aspect of the game. Our personnel is league competitive so what is up?
Maybe we need our bye week to be Week 1 since we seem to only get better after the bye.
Did somebody already suggest The Ed must go?
