Jets Sign Hank Poteat

The Jets have re-signed Hank Poteat. To make room for the Cornerback, the team has released G/C Will Montgomery.  Signing Poteat makes me think a few things:

  1. Justin Miller’s recovery might not be going well.  Why sign a guy who can come in and play the slot or even spot-start from the word go otherwise?
  2. Ahmad Carroll isn’t anything more than a special teamer for the Jets or for the foreseeable future.
  3. Drew Coleman’s reps are in jeopardy as the Jets have to have better play from the slot.
  4. They must feel some confidence in whoever would replace Damien Woody at Right Tackle, as he’s the most likely candidate to snap should Mangold need to sit for any period of time.  I would imagine that player would be Wayne Hunter.

  1. I always like Poteat, even though he is a journeyman. But, we need a safety to take over from Eric Smith {Elam?} and more O line depth. How good is Wayne Hunter? Seemed that Montgomery had at least some experience.

  2. Drew coleman has been terrible playing the slot. I would assume miller won’t be back until week 6 based upon this move.
Interesting roster with 4 QBs, 4 kickers and 10 dbs.
Does this coaching staff really know what it is doing? My reaction is a resounding NO!

  3. Maybe Poteat was resigned to kick…

  4. these roster moves really do get stranger and stranger. maybe they plan to use some kind of nickel or dime with rhodes and lots of below average corners?

bassett, as for point #4, i fear you are giving tangini too much credit for forsight. when they got rid of kendall, i thought the same thing, that they must like the OL depth and think things are ok. we know how that turned out. similarly, they never thought to have a player other than nugent practice PAT’s. when woody or mangold inevitably need to come out for a play or two, i fear we will once again see their lack of forsight…

  5. Poteat is going to cover Anquan Boldin in the red zone.

  6. I like Lowery, but we gave up a 2nd rounder for Justin Miller… particularly for his athletic upside.

I really hope to have him back 100%, so we can learn difinitively what he’s capable of – damn!

  7. We have seen plenty of Miller and it has never been impressive i just wish lowery was a little quicker i like his play and enthusiam, now we just need rhodes to start making some big plays! where are the INTS?

  8. I think if Lowry was a little quicker we wouldn’t have had a chance to draft him.

  9. Mad dog, ed, ian-
The rest of the guys posting won’t like these posts. They sound like that guy jas. This is inventive stuff. 7 thats right count them 7 CB’s. we now have only 2 backup OL’s and NONE on the practice squad. This team is at a deep disadvantage not having standard roster numbers. Smaller special teams etc. I don’t care if montgomery wasn’t as good as all these cb’s, you need bodies for each position and despite what the brain trust may think, Ainge can’t play OL. As ian said last years OL worked out great.

  10. Mad dog-
If Ainge doesn’t cut it at OL He’s in line to start kicking. Poteat is working out at OG.

  11. Just a footnote to history
Anybody remember that the Brain Trust had Stuckey play CB the entire 4th exhibition game.
For the cool aid gang- what if he got banged up??????????
Now we 7 CB’s and the excuse was if we run short we need flexibility-SO, does that mean we have 8 CB’s OR are these guys nuts.

  12. Is the consensus that Lowery got beaten by Jackson and Gates because he lacked speed? It seemed to me that Lowery bit on Jackson’s fake and maybe if he were faster he could’ve prevented a big gainer. The problem there seemed biting on the move (he’ll learn) not a lack of speed or quickness. On the Gates INT, he has to learn to peek back and play that corner endzone route better…he should ask Revis who played the corner route to perfection against Ginn in week 1. Also, the pass to Gates was a perfect pass…sometimes you have to tip your cap to the QB.

I keep on reading the FO slammed for having 4 kickers on the roster. That’s obviously 2 too many, but the Jets have to keep Hodges for 3 weeks because he was signed off the Pats practice squad and the only way to prevent having an extra placekicker would be to cut or IR Nugent. So, the Hodges roster spot is temporary and Mangini is not a soothsayer, so I find it hard to criticize him for not knowing that Hodges would get injured. As for Nugent, I’m for cutting or putting him on the IR because I don’t think Feely is any worse and may be better. But, I think I’m in the minority here. So, there’s no avoiding the 4 kickers (soon to be 3) unless Nugent is off-loaded. Because I want to understand the criticism better, are you saying that Graham and Nugent should’ve been replaced in the off-season? Would 3 kickers be okay pending Nugent’s recovery? I mean, at some point, the Jets should be back to just 2 kickers. So, is it a failure of management to have 2 injured kickers on the roster?

Given that the Jets don’t have an heir apparent to Favre, I don’t mind the 4 QBs, but I do wish that 1 was used to hold for FGs and PATs. What are the NFL rules for this? Could the designated no. 3 QB hold? After the Romo debacle a couple of years ago, I can understand not wanting the no. 2 QB to hold.

As for 10 DBs, I agree that that’s too many and should not be at a cost of OL depth. The FO knew that the safety spot next to Rhodes was a weakness and it seems that Mangini might even rotate Poteat through that spot. The slot corner was probably supposed to be the loser in the Miller/Lowery battle and Miller’s been injured and Coleman has not stepped up…Poteat is an upgrade there. I guess the biggest surprise is that Barrett is still around and is playing safety. He’s just not good.

  13. SD99, Not only should Nuge be nudged out, but the Poteat signing also makes no sense. I posted either today or yesterday that they should resign Poteat to replace Eric or Drew.

But this is another stupid signing because both those bozos remain on the roster. I envisioned their replacement. If they are good, there is no reason to sign Hank. If they are bad….
Only on SOJ does incompetence get rewarded with continued paychecks.

  14. Sack-
Thanks for the well thought post. Several things
1)IF the coaches were unhappy with graham (bad year) and/or nugent fix it in off season not in first 2 games.
2)If you love nugent and you don’t have other roster issues you keep 2 PK’s until he heals if its not too long. This where the 4th QB begins to bite you. You can’t go the whole season. It is not a cap thing to IR him cause you are paying both anyway.
3)Claiming a punter with no track record off of somebody’s PS is STUPID. What if he just sucked instead of injured, you have to keep him 3 weeks. And dare I say it the PATS PRACTICE SQUAD. You have got to
be kidding. This is not about soothsaying-if the new guy sucks, cut him and get a new guy.
4)Teams keep 6-7 DBs. We have 10 and not even 5 and 5. Given the violence in the NFL that has to create dangerous shortages in the lines or LB’s
5)I know some of you don’t like this stuff but the Jets are already short an RB. ALL teams keep 3. They are already rolling the dice if Jones or Leon gets nicked up (any of you guys ever see an RB nicked up-nah!) Think of a game where they both go down and Brad Smith is the back.
    6) Having only 2 OL backups and NONE on the PS is just plain scary. I can’t wait to hear how tough it will be to get a brand guy during the season to learn the system

I swear I am as big a fan as anyone but this whole “style” scares. Something is just not right. I wish I could explain it better. They have done a great job of upgrading the roster but the rest of this is very unsettling.

  15. Harlan, I’m with you on Eric and cutting Nugent, but I’ve seen enough flashes from Drew (and he is young) to give him a little more time. How about Barrett? As a pass covering safety, I guess he’s okay, but he’s no John Lynch when it comes to delivering a hit. I’m not even sure he’s Kelly Lynch.

  16. jas-

I think the only thing that made the Hodges signing dumb was the fact that he got injured. If he came in and did the job, then nobody would care. I think Nugent should get cut or put on the IR. I don’t think he’s that good and Feely has more than adequately replaced him.

You make an interesting point about RB, but I think the new trend in the NFL is why have a lot of RBs when you can just poach from the practice squads of other teams. Also, there are probably 1/2 dozen RBs not on any team that are available to be signed. Is Chatman eligible to come back this year?

  17. Sack-
    2 things-
Hodges is ONLY stupid cause you have to keep him 3 weeks-period. There are plenty of one week punters. Its simple, mangini didn’t know he’d get hurt but he might have sucked and then what.
I can’t think of a team with 2 backs(i looked). It is very hard to get a guy up to speed mid season. They poach to fill the 3rd spot not 1 or 2 which is where the Jets are now. Chatman comes back after game 4 thank goodness.
Personally, I think nugent is just average but the they love him. Who knows.

  18. sack….feely has “more then adequately” replaced nugent….

yeah…the 31 yd miss to open the pats game proves that.

  19. poteat is average at best, they should have signed the guy that the rams just got rid of, fakhir brown. nugent sucks bro, we should get carney when the giants cut em

  20. If you draft a CB in the 6th round and he’s decent as a 4th CB, does that sound right? Let Coleman be.

Yes Feely missed that chip shot but it was his first time out there with us and it’s been his only miss, which is more than I can say about Nugent.

We haven’t had depth on our O line since we had Muchado and Lovern, neither of which is all world but decent fill ins.
