Opinion: Great Kid, Don’t Get Cocky!

[Luke Skywalker blows up a TIE Fighter]

Luke: Got him, I got him!!

Han Solo: Great kid, don’t get cocky!!

Up until now, I’ve only been priveleged on only see Jet loses live, so in the first time I’ve actually seen a Jets win live and the Jets righted the karmic balance and WENT AWF.  It’s the game that I’ve been waiting to see, 17 years in the making.

56 points, 3 interceptions, 4 recovered fumbles, Favre ties a franchise record with Joe Namath for 6TDs, 2 receivers with multiple TDs — for the Jets, it was insane.

More than any of that, it was great to see a convincing Jets win .. a win they needed badly coming off the last two weeks.  The passing game was working, the defense was basically creating turnovers at will, and for those who say Mangini is conservative (I disagree with that sentiment strongly, I believe he makes overly aggressive calls at the wrong times) you saw the Jets convert a 4th and 1 BOMB for a touchdown from the middle of the field.  Yes, this team does need to progress in their own running game and in their defense, but this team showed us some good things on Sunday, and it will be nice to soak it up for a bit.

The two week break for the team comes at a good time.  A time for a team that is trying to congeal with new players and leaders to sort some scheme issues out, work on some new wrinkles and work on communication.  Also, I’d hope to see some players get healthy and add depth back onto this roster like Justin Miller, David Clowney and the specialists.

Maybe it’s not exactly how everyone pictured the first month going once the Jets got Favre and Tom Brady was injured, but for the Jets to have a real shot at the playoffs, they needed to hold the fort in September, go 2-2 and set the team up for a nice stretch in the middle of the season.   With what I saw Sunday, the team has done that.

We’ll talk about what we want to see from the team later, but for now, we’re going to enjoy this one, while heeding Han Solo’s sage advice.

  1. What, no mention of my 20-yard field goal at Jets Fest was the good luck portent that broke your bad-luck-in-person mojo?!

Clearly, the defining moment of the day …

  2. that will be later, as will Mrs Ratty. :)

  3. I am happy for you.

  4. I agree and we all talked during the week what a necessity this win was.

And how to a certain point it was necessary that they blew them out. And they did exactly that. I’m not worried at all about the defense, they held a very potent offense scoreless for the 1st half. Forget all the 2nd half points, whether right or wrong, it’s hard to stay intense at 34-0. And the offense never gave the defense reason to worry.

Pass rush looked awesome, they were hitting as hard as I can remember in the last 10 yrs and if it wasn’t known before- it sure is now- Darrelle Revis is a monster!!! Lowery was a bit overmatched but I liked the intensity but Revis is a maniac…sure pro bowl this year and I’m not sure he’s not the best shut down in the game right now.

All in all huge win. But they still have a long way to go. Cincy, Oakland, and KC have looked good at different points of each of their games this year and although we should/need to win all 3, the Jets need to continue to progress. Hopefully Chargers beat Buffalo, so they are at best 6-1 when we meet. And we can take first.

We need to be 5-2 going to Orchard Park!

  5. They shut down the big two recievers, but still I am concerned that this team is getting TORCHED by secondary recievers (slot guys, TE and backs). Is that a failure of the LB’s to cover in space, or pure schematics.

In the second half, youd rather them dink and dunk than let Boldin or Fitzgerald smoke you on a big play, but even in the 1st qtr they were getting beat by those.

  6. the 5 sacks was huge,if i was mangini i would go with those ugly uniforms it seems like they gave us good luck.

  7. in the words of pacman jones we made it rain

this games comes at the perfect time with a bye week coming up and the best part of the schedule ahead

the one thing that does worry me is the secondary, is there a way to use lowery and miller at the same time?

  8. john, no way to use them both in the base package. Of course they could be both be on the field in nickel and dime packages

  9. First half execution was great (not perfect,if that even matters) 3rd qtr looked like prevent D, the Cards made adjustments found their rhythm and rolled with it, got to give them credit, they didnt cave in. Loved the 4th+1 TDs, that was aggressive and totally unexpected. As far as the two point conversion at the end, the Jets needed it, not to win, but to learn, learn to be aggressive like feeding raw meat to dogs makes them vicious, don’t just close the door, slam it !

  10. man finally we have a easy schedule in , Cinncy , KC and the raiders , i know our D needs to get to work but our rush D is ranked 6 which is big we did not allow a 100 yd rusher yet which is a good sign and we will have some test not in the next game but against LJ who is back to his usual self and the Mcfadden and fargas tandem which im confedant we can control but we still have to fave M Lynch then S jackson , our rush D will have a real test ahead of them but look at the difference now that big Jenks is here

  11. This is exactly what we needed. I good feeling going into the bye week. Now if we come out and lay and egg against the Bengals then you can say Same old jets!!! I was just wondering if Mangini would have coached the game the Whisenhunt did how quickle the fans would have killed him. What an awful showing from the Cardinals coaching staff. Did anyone mention what a bad call the end of the 1st half pass play was? 10 secs to go from your own 20….down by 31?? Throwing passes that get your best WR killed with secs to play?? Mangini would have been crucified.

  12. Great win yesterday, but we still got a lot of issues to work on. Hopefully we use this bye week to its fullest and work on the running game.

  13. Bassett I believe the line from Family Guy was “Great kid don’t get penisy!”

Still the Jets biggest weakness seems to be 3rd down, and for some reason 3rd and long, stops. That I just don’t get. Am I crazy to think that when a team is in long yardage on 3rd down that is the time every defense throughout the history of the NFL is drooling for a blitz? Yet over and over again I watch, they drop 6, 7, 8 players and the O converts. That is a travesty to allow the 3rd down and long conversions time and again.

Also this week I started seeing the D line jumping when a pass was thrown. It was almost like the didn’t know how to jump with their arms in the air as the QB was rearing back to throw.

The games so far have been quite odd. It seems as though the pace of the game is slowed and that no team is really in control. Until the Jets scored finally in the 2nd half it looked like the game was coming back into reach.

The Jets need a better running game if they want to win a super bowl IMHO.

  14. I love it when I’m right… especially when Jets win for Bassett to see up close and personal at the Meadowlands!!!

With Jenkins playing, Jets able to expose Cardinals pathetic running game. Ol’ Man Warner was forced to pass for 472 yards with six turnovers and five sacks.

    - He fumbled the ball four times, losing three.

    - Also tossed three interceptions.

Conversely, Brett Favre piloted Jets to Six TD Passes; of which, he dialed right down the middle to reach out and touch Laveranues Coles for Three!

… It’s just a matter of time (touch), before Chad Pennington gets dropped from Coles’ Top-Five.

    Go Jets!

  15. Anthony,

I don’t know how you can say they shut down the big two receivers, their three receivers each had over a hundred yds. and three TD’s. I think we should do away with that prevent D, we seemed to shut off the pass rush too often.

  16. Really, I am commenting on the first half– the two big guys did nothing. They did move the ball when they didn’t turn it over, and they moved it by hitting secondary recievers.

  17. I was there and it was certainly fun. That being said, I was nervous throughout a lot of the 2nd half. Scoring 56 is incredible, letting the other team score 35 in one half is not good. Sorry to harsh anyone’s buzz, but the D needs a lot of work, as they were repeatedly torched in the 2nd half. Many of the cards TDs took less than 2 minutes! The D played great in the 1st half (I’ve been to about 30 games and that was the most complete half of Jets football I’ve ever seen) but disappeared for much of the 2nd half. Jenkins didn’t play much in the 2nd half. It is clear to me that without him, our D is not very good. As I said, I was there and the 20 yard cushion they were giving the cards receivers on the out patterns wasn’t working. I understand giving up the little stuff when you have a big lead, but it was only taking them 5 or 6 plays to score! Why not stay aggressive and not let them come within a botched onside kick that almost worked of making this game way too interesting?

Favre was awesome, but let’s spend some time looking at our D that played one great half and one piss-poor one.

  18. Get a hold of this…

Jets release Ben Graham and sign OL Will Montgomery….

  19. And, you got why the second half was so different from the first? Running no huddle caused the Jets to run the same D throughout. That was very smart of the Cards and Mangini said it would be a point of the off week to fix that. From prior years, we know that will happen!

  20. the big change in the 2nd half was because Jenkins was taken out, it hurt the pass rush and put too much pressure on the secondary, warner is too good to be given that much time especially with the likes of his recievers. the 3-4 is not effective without KJ, they need to find a suitable back up, or change the defensive scheme when he is out, especially when playing against such an explosive offense, all things said though, our offense did pick up the slack, and keep the game out of reach.
