Daily Links: A Weight Lifted

- Jets players feel a little relief going into their bye week.
- Boland gave his recap of the game and the locker room yesterday.
- Will the Jets start David Barrett or Abram Elam in Smitty’s place?
- After four weeks away, Jesse Chatman is back with the team.

I get the feeling that Abram Elam is the kind of like that back-up 2B/SS in baseball. He can spell a starter for a week or so but once he gets real playing time they get exposed as what they are. I would start Elam for the Bengal game and go from there. It’s not like Smith was playing great anyway……. Is there a chance we can get Sutton suspended??
Though the guy often irritates me with some of the nonsense he writes,(Chad could have made five of those TDs?) I have to give credit to Cimini for challenging some of the misconceptions often repeated here: The Jet D isn’t aggressive enough, has to blitz more, gives up yards playing “prevent.” It’s sobering to see that the Jets lead the league in yards given up on blitzes.

The 64k$ question is, why? Obviously, every blitz involves the risk of fewer people in coverage, but do the remaining corners and safeties play differently because they expect the QB to get sacked? Or that the ball will have to come out so quickly that they don’t need to respect a long throw? Or are the linebackers just not alert or quick enough to help cover the underneath throws? And why aren’t the blitzes succeeding more often? Not disguised well enough? Bad angles taken? Too slow in developing?
These are the questions that the CS is going to have to use the bye to answer and fix if the Jets are going to make a real run.

As one of those guys who wants more aggressive D, I don’t understand the problem either. Last year the Giants were very aggressive with a horrid secondary and did fine. I still think it’s the schemes and as everyone knows, I have no faith in Sutton. The better teams seem to have better D coaches.
Jas-
Not sure I agree about the Giants. Their biggest strength was getting a tremendous rush out of their base defense without having to blitz and leave their suspect secondary further exposed.
A better analogy for me is any number of NE teams, who blitzed out of the 3-4 often and succeeded with receivers and parking lot attendants playing corner.
Posters are simply too easily blaming coaching for mistakes in coverage. These packages require recognition and reaction that only comes with execution. Meetings this week and next will involve teaching points that start with “see!” After the bye, they will be better. At two and two, we’re right on schedule. Cincy was supposed to be better, giving us three straight opportunities for the offense to carry the defense if necessary. Got to be ready for Buffalo, the next test.
