News: Lane Kiffin Fired

by Bassett on September 30th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

The worst kept secret in the NFL is finally true, Al Davis has fired Lane Kiffin.  Ironically former scapegoat of Herm Edwards, former Jets OC Paul Hackett was in the running for the job opening, but it seems that Tom Cable is going to replace Kiffin as head coach.

What remains to be seen is how the players respond to Cable.  With a game against the Raiders in less than a month, I hope it’s not well.

Raiders Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan was in the running for the head coaching job but lost out.  With a contract that I believe expires at the end of the season, Ryan would be wise to get the hell out of that mess and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ryan interviewing in New York this coming offseason for a role with his old friend Eric Mangini.

I’m just glad Rob Ryan didn’t get the job because I think the players might play harder for him, and because I’d like to see him in green.

Is there anybody classier than Al Davis? Firing “for cause” so they think don’t have to pay the rest of the contract? I hope they lose every game he’ll see in his miserable long life.

The Raiders HC gig is like the discounted cashmere sweater with the stain on it — not worth it. You would’ve thought that Monte (my old position coach from my NYJ ballboy days) would’ve talked his boy out of that sh-t show.

I don’t want Rob Ryan until he grows back his Golden Girls-esque locks that brought him better fortunes in previous years.

Lane Kiffin trying for a 75-yard FG reminded me of Costanza dragging the World Series trophy around the Yankees parking lot in an attempt to get fired.

Well put Jonathan. He was also seen eating strawberries in one of Jack Tatum’s old game jerseys.

I honestly hope Kiffin gets another shot in a place that is more normal. Its not his fault Davis is an idiot. Kiffin never really had control as head coach with Davis around and no one has in the last 15 years. The only one who came close was Gruden, but even he hightailed it as soon a he had the chance. Ryan would be an idiot to take that job if offered or to stay on the staff when his contract ends. And if I’m an agent, I’m working as hard as I can to get my player off that team if they want to even have a shot at victory.

Thank god Davis is an idiot and did not place Ryan as HC. Then maybe we can snag him as DC for the Jets next season!!

i would love to have ryan as our DC next year…and demote sutton back to what he’s good at…LB coach…

I think we should do everything possible to get Ryan. Raiders defense has always looked solid with him around and then maybe we can also pull one of his stud corners to add to our core group of guys..

Sutton has always been the royal thorn in my @#$% horrible and unaggressive during his tenure. Sutton is to conservative for me…

Out with the old and in with the new. I wish the jets could go out and get him right now…

  11. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Lou, the Raiders D looked as bad against the Bills at the end of that sure victory, as conservative, unaggressive, as playing-not-to-lose as our D has looked far too often.

Unless Ryan can prove Kiffin or Davis forced him to give up the aggressive style that would have given the Jills a loss this year, I don’t want him.

That game alone raises too many questions in my mind.

The upside to Ryan is that him and Mangini have worked together before. I believe the Jets to have more talent on defense then the Raiders and for those reasons I wouldn’t be furious if they hired him, but Harlan is right. The Raider’s D has given up 2 4th qtr leads this year. I can definatly live without that. Ryan does have a fire in him that I think our D could use tho. We will see. He will probably be HC of the Raiders by week 9.

I think Ryan is a good DC but does he use the 3-4? Cotrell was a very good DC when he used his system in Buffalo (3-4) and wasnt all that great here because he was forced to run Herms Tampa 2. Is Sutton worse than a DC who doesn’t know how to run a 3-4? Where did Mangini and Ryan work together?

  14. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

I heard they worked together in New England. Ryan was a linebacker coach, Don’t quote me though.

Rob Ryan would be a perfect fit as the Jets D Cord. They def do run a 34 and you guys are correct that Mangini coached the Db’s and Ryan coached the Lb’s. The Raiders are missing the one thing neccasary to run the 34, a stud nose tackle like KJ, Casey Hampton from Pitt. or Ratliff in Dallas. Terrell Sands is slow and lacks that nasty streak to just mangle people like Big Kris does. Plus he isnt as quick on his feet like Jenkins. I strongly feel that Sutton will be stripped of his play calling duties by midseason as the Jets try and make a playoff push. Next year after the disaster that happened out in Oakland, Ryan will be re united with Mangini and have full range to be totally in charge of the d. Al Davis has been convicted of shady business practices in court and no doubt ruined a pretty good young coaches career
