Adam Schein drops his six-piece for this weeks football games.
One of my favorite shows on TV are NFL Network’s Playbook shows. This week they have a longer that usual section talking about the Jets, one portion of which is Leon Washington at the board talking about kick returns which was awesome, but I can’t find online.
Anyway, I’ll have more information later, but here’s a great video of Brian Billick explaining why modern Offensive Coordinators use the bunch formation.
Adjunct to today’s earlier discussion about Leon Washington, Michael Salfino wrote an article on the Jets offense and why it needs a serious overhauling.
Just a note to remind you that we will be chatting with you here on TJB at 2PM ET today. Please join us to talk some Jets football. It’s generally chaos, but we always manage to have fun!

Happy Freaking Halloween!
At 4-3, this team is something of a haunted hayride with frights around every corner .. just waiting … to …
INTERCEPTION!!!!!
umm … scare you … or something …
As if this team wasn’t spooky enough, today the Jets are practicing today* in Halloween costumes. Just like last year, the day will culminate in a parade around the new Florham Park facilities with awards given by Woody Johnson himself for best costumes.
As is Mangini’s tradition, players will knock on assistant coaches’ office doors and ask for more plays for their playbooks or on Public Relations peoples doors for bland cliches (one day at a time, every game is a big game). Word on the street is that Brian Schottenheimer was handing out 200 page binders of Brad Smith reverse plays.
Here are a few of the costumes in which some Jets showed up today.
Shaun Ellis (Panthro) — The Big Kat went as the big blueish grey Thundercat with nunchuks and everything. Thundercats … HOOOOO!!!!!
Kris Jenkins (Junk Yard Dog) – Chain around his neck, the DJ played Jenkins theme song “Another One Bites the Dust” as he entered the field. Grab them sacks, Kris!
Bryan Thomas (Calvin Pace) – Thomas went as his hero … the guy who’s made him relevant again. (Hey Victor Hobson .. howyoudin??) (more…)
JP Pelzman writes an article today on Leon Washington and how his big play ability on special teams or in the offense has been a big help to the Jets. From watching some TV shows, there’s a lot of talk about whether Leon Washington could be a Brian Westbrook type of player.
When you look at their statistics, there’s some similarities. The biggest two differences of course are touches and special teams. Westbrook sees the ball alot more in the offense but doesn’t play specials much anymore as he’s just too valuable to that team to get hurt on a punt or kick return. But when you boil it down to value per play on offense via Football Outsiders, their values (Westbrook 14.4% DVOA, Washington 11.0% DVOA) aren’t that dissimilar. Leon’s been working on his game and his improvement is marked, but there’s still more room for him to grow. I’d love to see Leon get more touches in this offense, but I wonder if he will ever vault to the level of Brian Westbrook’s game … what do you think?
1) Eric Mangini vs. Dick Jauron – This game will feature the tale of two coaches going on extremely two different paths. After last week’s loss in Miami, Dick Jauron was informed he would be receiving an extension to be the head coach of the Buffalo Bills through the 2011 season. On the other side of the coin after the NYJ win verse the Chiefs, many were still questioning immensely Eric Mangini and his staff. Mangini (the Veteran team) and Jauron (the Younger team) both received a ray of light in Week 1 when the Patriots suffered a brutal injury. Many analysts said it would be between the Jets and Bills for the division the rest of the way. This week’s game is crucial for both teams considering the winner gets a huge boost of momentum going into the second half of the season. The Jets have not played a good game since the first half of the Arizona game, and going up to Buffalo will be no easy chore. Mangini is 1-3 in games against Jauron. Which coach will have the team more prepared for victory and ready for a big run in the NFL’s second half of the season?
Here’s some highlights from last week’s Bills game and their last three preceding games …
[Week 7 versus Chargers]
[Week 5 versus Cardinals]
[Week 4 versus Rams]

Commenter Mad Dog Mo goes behind enemy lines with Jets in Orchard Park to check out the game and share his experience.
Reverse psychology doesn’t work on psychos…
I don’t know if we should view this as a legitimate shot to win this weekend or a local sportswriter playing a little reverse psychology with the Jets but the biggest Jet Hater of them all, Bob Matthews (Longtime Rochester D&C Columnist) is picking the Jets to win. Vegas has the line at 5 ½ points with the Bills favored. That didn’t stop Matthews from putting the Jets on top of the Bills 23-20 on the heels of a weak pass rush and run defense by the Bills. The Bills are having their best season in years and the local guy turns on them. Not much “circling of the wagons”. All of the major sports reporting outlets, ESPN, Yahoo, USA Today, etc. have their experts picking the Bills to win this week. Perhaps Bob is getting his picks from the Madden Simulator. The simulator also has the Jets winning 28-24.
With some talk yesterday from Favre and Mangini around gambling analogies, we’re going straight for the grotesque extreme and giving you a video of Kenny Rogers and creepy Muppets doing a dramatic interpretation of Rogers’ famous song on the old Muppets Show.
My favorite part has to the fact that whiskey, cigarettes, gambling and dying old men are good topics for children’s television … ahh those were the days …

Sooooo ….
To Niag’ra in a sleeper,
There’s no honeymoon that’s cheaper,
And the train goes slow.
Ooh ooh ooh!
Off, we’re gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo. . .
Shall we?
