If we are going to the past, Jim Hudson is the type of safety I would want. A strong TE able to take out the best tight end of his day (most folks here forget Mackey). Kerry needs someone to partner with who is not as dumb as Elam, slow as Smith (both in speed and reaction), and who is harder hitting than Barrett, etc. Another Tangini failure is that there is no one on the roster or practice squad who slightly resembles such a player. Several sports writers are giving Smith a negative reputation he really doesn't deserve. I really think he was trying to make a play on the ball and wasn't expecting Rhodes' hit. It should be reviewed before they make players afraid of contact that might cost them their reputation to say nothing of the cost. If you remember the 'catch and release' that happened to the Giants, I think, two years ago, this would add to a chilling effect toward contact plays.
