Audible: At the Quarter Pole
Posted on October 5th, 2008 by Bassett
A quarter way through the season, how are you feeling about this team? Do you think the team rounded the corner with the game that they played last weekend? Is there any chance for the 2-2 Jets to catch the 4-0 Bills or 2-1 Patriots for the division? Can the defense make some adjustments to tighten the screws for the tougher schedule in November?

Yes, yes, yes and yes. All the Jets off-season moves appear to have improved both sides of the line. The Pats are going nowhere with Cassel, the Bills have yet to play a real team, and the Jets are just starting to fully integrate their new players. I think it will be a race between the Jets and The Bills with both teams making the play-offs.
absolutely. Buff 4-0 start is impressive, but who have they played? Sea with no WRs, Jax with no OL, Oak & Stl? I conceded nothing to them. NE will go 8-8 at best. we were unlucky to play them week 1 w/o Brady – they did not complete one pass in air beyond chains – they effectively used Moss as a decoy against us. If we win next 3, then take 2 of 3 of @ Buff, Stl, @ NE, we will win the division
we can catch buffalo but i dont think you guys (jerry and toon) are giving them enough respect. They did beat Jacksonville granted they had a banged up offensive line but that team has now beaten the colts and houston. So before we start handing the Jets the division lets just remember that right now its the bill’s to loose. They are solid all around…have the jets proven anything? Absolutley not even in the win against Arizona did you come out feeling great about that game? The defense bailed them out early in the game when hey easily coul have gone down 14 nothing, and then we let them back into it! So i think the bills have proven much more then the Jets have. We won 2 competitive games against 2 bad teams. Got blown out by the Chargers aand lost to a patriots team “that isnt going anywhere with matt cassel”. So lets not get too high on ourselves. We arent going to block field goals, return INTs for TDs aand force 100 fumbles every game. Hate to be the realist
btw whats the deal with gholston has he done anything this season?
We need to shore up our short pass D, every team has been able to throw the quick short throws on us all year
great call Ham – our achilles heel has been the dump off & short passes to RBs & TEs
Bills look tough so far and always seem to play the Jets well. Jets will beat the Pats next time around – can’t wait for that one.
LB’s need to show up better on D, no question about it to prevent those dump offs to TEs and RBs. D-linemen and CBs are doing their job so far.
Offense continues to jell with #4 leading the charge. Things look good but let’s take that proverbial one-game-at-a-time mindset before we get ahead of ourselves.
PASSING GAME A HUGE YES. RUNNING GAME – FAIR AND DEFENSE NEEDS IMPROVEMENT. If we are going anywhere our Defense has to be much much better.
Pennington manages a perfect game versus the chargers. A team we lost to by 21 points. Someone explain to me why FARVE continues to cram every week especially now that he has the time during the bye week instead he uses it like a vacation. Spells trouble especially when we face the 0-5 bengals next week who a hungry for a win. We cannot take this game lightly that is all that I can say.
Hey PrEd(itor);
Great to see you are getting away from your “FIRE MANGINI” Johnny Nichols koolaide. Our defense HAS NOT LOST ANY GAMES SO FAR. It is totaly on our offense. If you want to be INFORMED, you must understand that.!!!!
We better beat the Bengals….And we’ll be lucky to beat the Phins next time..They are for real….I sure miss Chad..
We look out of control on offense. I ran into Marty Lyons last week at an event and told him that. He said, we are an offense that was built for Chad and we are struggling to figure out how to fit that to Favre’s style and skills. It may take some more time, but if the Defense plays well, and I think they can, we can win games as we keep improving.
By the way, the reason Chad and Miami keep winning is because he is a GREAT QB to have when you can run the ball. And Miami con run it really well.
Repeat.. GREAT QB.
after these first 4 games its obvious we need to draft for a RB this year, no matter what
Chad is on the Miami Dolphins, the Jets’ traditional chief divisional rival. Chad’s Dolphins have won 2 games and he has thrown 1 TD in those 2 wins. Miami’s running game, generally, and Ronnie Brown, specifically, have carried Miami’s offense and Miami’s defense has done a great job. But, Chad was not playing defense today when LT was stopped on 4th and goal, he did not do a rain dance so field conditions favored the home team, and he didn’t make the schedule, which called for a West Coast team to play at 1 pm on the East Coast. So, kudos for Chad playing .500 football for the Fins, but our QB is the one having a Pro Bowl season.
The Bengals embarrassed the Jets last season and dropped them to 1-6. So, I hope the Jets don’t take them lightly.
I can’t believe you clowns talking about missing Chad. Did you see what our offense did last week? The sky’s the limit with this offense under Favre!
SackDance99:
Are you saying that the Jets AND Dolphins are on par?
Are you serious? The dolphins have atleast 26 new players on their team this year and were THE WORST TEAM IN THE NFL last year. Do you remember?
Can’t believe anyone is still arguing about Chad and Favre. Anyone who pines for Chad, please go root for him. I’m serious. There’s nothing wrong with liking Chad, but at this point I think you should let it go. Anyone see how well Jay Cutler is playing? You know we could have drafted him. I think every week I will mention how well he’s doing and how great our team would be if we got him.
Pete57 is right. Imagine the chemistry we’d have on offense if we had taken Cutler three years ago? Sure, the QB we have put up 56 points last week, but I heard a rumor he doesn’t study the playbook so does it really even count? I’ll bet Jay Cutler studies the playbook all day and night. Can’t we just forfeit all the games until he’s a free agent and we can cut most of our team in order to sign him?
Subway, I’m glad someone gets me! Maybe Bassett can run a 16 week feature on what the Jets would’ve been like if we had drafted Marino, going game by game. Then, we can talk about the QB contoversy if we then drafted Favre like we wanted to. Wow, just think of what we could’ve been. Wake me up when the real season is over, so I can go back and rewrite it, putting in all the players I REALLY like on the team.
Yes, Pete, a lot of people seem too caught up in the team we actually have now when it’s obvious we should be focused on players on other teams that either once were, or possibly could have been, on the Jets in some alternate universe. I mean, isn’t that what being a fan of a team is really about?
Subway, let’s not forget to add in Jet players that we liked, but whose careers would’ve been better if they hadn’t had injuries. Nameth, Testaverde, Chad. By my count we have at least 3 more superbowl wins on that alone! It’s so easy being a Jet fan, I actually feel sorry for most of the other franchises.
It,s Chad’s management that has Miami believing they can win, He brings a winning attitude and you can see it all over the Dolphins..The Chargers don’t travel well…Either do the Cardinals… We got rid of the QB that cares about TEAM and hoked up with a hillbilly for one year that only cares about himself..
I want us to have a winning attitude and be the envy of the nfl…But we better stop wondering if we can beat cincy and start acting like we can beat the Giants!!
Hank/Naples,
I think arguing which team is on a par and yadda, yadda, yadda is pointless. Also, I seem to remember that the Jets were 4-12 last season, so you can’t really say the Jets have been that much better the past 3 seasons (Jets 19 wins; Fins 16 wins). The Fins were decimated with injuries last season and cleaned house. But, they have a huge OL and 2 premier RBs and a defense that has a lot of vets, including guys like Porter, Holliday, Ferguson and Will Allen (and Langford and Merling should both make the all-rookie team on D). Not to mention, they have Parcells, who is better at turning around an NFL program in a short period of time than any other coach/GM in NFL history. Also, the Jets are integrating 10 new players into their regular offense and defense rotations (not counting a new punter and kicker), and are relying upon several players that are starting their first full season in the NFL. So, both teams have had significant turnover.
The Jets beat the Dolphins on their home field and without a kicker. The Fins play up here, in the cold, on the last day of the season. If the Jets beat the Fins twice, then they’re not on a par.
steve, it’s Ronnie Brown and Parcells. There’s not a Miami fan who doesn’t believe that Henne will end up being the QB by season’s end.
I believe that the Jets D will really have to tighten up if the Jets are going to reach the playoffs and contend.
Agreed! I think Cincy is a much better team than their 0-5 record would indicate. They gave the Giants a run for their money, and was solid for 2 & 1/2 qtrs. with Dallas. With two weeks to draw up a game plan, Mangini & Co. better not disappoint us….
SackDance99:
You dropped the ball BIG TIME on your last comment. I read other blogs in our division including the Dolphins and I have not seen a comment that is asking or expecting to see Henne at QB before years end. On the contrary my friend, all the comments directed toward CP are positive to glowing and very happy to have him !!!. They trully appreciate what they have in Chad and praying that he stays healthy.
