Dwight Lowery Taking Reps at Safety?

by Bassett on October 8th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Mangini noted in his morning press conference that Dwight Lowery is added into the mix of safety snaps.

“We rotate those guys through because what we want to be able to do is change who’s down, who’s back and one of the things that’s really important to me, especially in the secondary, is that they all understand each other’s roles because you may run some corner-over-type defenses against slot.”

With the Bengals adding Chris Henry to the roster last week, the Jets are going to see a lot of three receiver formations, and when the three receivers are Ocho Cinco, Housh and Henry, corners had better be versatile.  So it’s not because Mangini wants Lowery to play a traditional safety role, but because Mangini treasures those versatile players who can play back from the line or up on it.  Mangini even made a point of noting that they want to make sure they can either slide safeties down onto slot receivers (Ocho Cinco will play here a lot)  or move corners over to cover that slot player – thus setting up a safety with the flanking receiver.  Things get muddier in sub packages like Nickel (5 DBs) or Dime (6 … two “Nickel” DBs) but the point is that that Mangini wants a versatile secondary that can cover all types of receivers from all types of alignments.

Look, Lowery does not have to learn the safety position. HE IS THE BEST HAWK WE HAVE. Manini is only using his abilities to the most. GO LOWERY !!!

As good of a CB Lowery will make He will be a better safety and if Mangini tries it out for one game he will never let him play a down again at CB , which is good which solves the Justin Miller problem a bit , I Know Lowery is the Best gut to start at CB besides Revis but We should use him to his best ability , and I think We should tell Miller , here you got the starting job , now make us feel like we shouldn’t draft a CB in the 1st Rd next year , which I think will happen but if the miller thing doesnt work out , Law is still available and I think Mangini can get him after all if we can get Favre I think we can get him

anything anyone thinks the jets will do before the trade dealine??

i personally dont think so but i just saw something on yahoo about how tj housh would be a perfect fit for the bills…which makes me nervous while understanding that yahoo doesn’t have the best sports analysts

Dont worry eddie Bengals wont trade TJ with CJ out of it and the only way they would , it would be for Lee Evans and know way they giving him up after giving him all that guaranteed money , so no way in hell is that going to happen , and Carson Plamer would be the 1st to protest if that happens

    nyckage,

Hey you know that Miller has been penalized more while playing the cornerback position in his nfl career than he as actually played the last two years. He doesnt have Lowery’s intangibles or his ability to eat up space as Lowery is a tackling machine back there. Heck, he even takes a chunk of Rhodes tackles. Watch out Kerry you might just get swept off by Lowery now that he is playing some safety. Pretty soon Lowery will lead the backfield in tackles and be right next to Harris. Not bad for a fourth round pick who was criticized for his lack of speed, lack of agressiveness, and lack of hype.

I think Revis, Elam, and Lowery along with Poteat should start making extra film sessions and then get back to Rhodes after Rhodes takes a break because he has been out of the picture as of late. He needs to make his case for the Pro Bowl this year soon or else he will be forgotten. He didnt get the backfield ready as it his responsibility for controlling the middle zone of the field against the cardinals.

    correction:
it was his responsibility for controlling the middle

Hey doesn’t Lowery resemble McCareins a little bit?

I mean physically, not ability wise – Lowery is a playmaker.

    ZING

lito sheppard is probably available. i say go get him. he’s still young and a way above average cb. then let lowery play nickel or fs on passing downs.

Dan C – I think Lowery has as many catches as McCareins does… ;-)
