Carson Palmer Pulled From Sunday Start

Marvin Lewis has announced today that Carson Palmer will not start for the Week Six game against the Jets at the Meadowlands.  In his place, Lewis noted that backup Ryan Fitzpatrick will be starting.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice Friday that backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Sunday in New York against the Jets in place of Carson Palmer, who continues to battle an elbow injury.

Lewis indicated Palmer’s injury is not a season-ending condition, but the club wants to try getting him some rest so it doesn’t become a week-to-week situation. Lewis didn’t rule out Palmer as a backup for Sunday and wouldn’t say if he will be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback.

The first clue that this Friday might be different than last Friday came when Palmer didn’t emerge from the training room until almost all of his teammates were on the field for the beginning of practice.

Palmer was dressed, but without his helmet and wasn’t throwing. He had what looked to be ice wrapped around his bothersome throwing elbow while Fitzpatrick threw routes to the tight ends and wide receivers.

Obviously this is a big break for the Jets, but the Bengals will still look to throw the ball on the Jets, a team that is trying to find it’s identity defending the pass.  The Bengals have struggled to run the ball, so this game could be very interesting.

  1. I hate to see players hurt but hope this is good for the Jets. It didn’t work out well with Cassell but the Bengals are a different team and the Jets should take full advantage of this.

  2. I take back all the smack talk I had previously posted on this site.

    ouch.

  3. Sorry but, the Jets are gonna win this game by 20+ points now.

  4. I feel for you WhoDeyFans. Never happy to see a top notch competitor injured. Hopefully, he’ll be healthy soon.

  5. WhoDeyFans –

Having suffered through a lousy team with an injured-arm quarterback, I feel your pain bro!

After Sunday, you have my condolences. …

  6. A loss to Harvard’s Ryan Fitzpatrick would be catastrophic. Now, I think this IS a trap game.

  7. I didn’t see Fitzpatrick play in the game two weeks ago. What’s his deal? I know he’s no Carson Palmer, but does anyone know anything about him?

  8. Sorry Whodey. I actually have a soft spot for the Bengals.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has played 1 good game and it was his first with the Rams. He is a Harvard product and had multiple turnovers agains the Browns. He also threw 85 the only touchdown he has this year. Mostly a bum. Thats all I got.

  9. i KNOW he better not throw to REVIS’ side of the field!

  10. Revis is my fantasy defender. He better throw that way and often.

  11. I almost wonder if the loss of Palmer actually helps the Jets that much. They defend pretty well against long, Palmer-type passes to #1 and #2 receivers. Where the D has trouble is against the Slot, TE and RB throws. Exactly the game plan you’d draw up for an inexperienced QB.

  12. True, but its near impossible to put up 30 + points dinking and dunking. We can do that. If we set the tempo of this game and use the run to set up the pass we will win this game handily.

  13. Check out this link for My take on Fitzpatrick:

    http://www.whodeyfans.com/2008/10/were-behind-ryan-fitzpatrick.html

Most important stats from the Cleveland game he started:
    3 interceptions, 1 lost fumble.

However, he found out about 3 hours before the game that he was going to start. Maybe (big maybe) they had a little more prep time this week?

  14. There’s a good chance Levi Jones is out too. Ouch.

Ryan Fitzpatrick started against the Browns this season and he put up a gorgeous stat line of 21/35(60%), 156 yards(4.45 YPA), 1 TD, 3 INTs, QB rating of 44.5. That was against the Browns. Palmer has been struggling, but his starts were against some of the league’s top defenses. Huge downgrade for the Bengals and with the Jets super prepared, this one shouldn’t be close.

  15. Dave, you forgot, he was also the leading rusher for the Bengals that game.

    Man, we are screwed.

  16. Ha. That was my game of the week. I loved the battle of Ohio. Can’t wait for part two. Hope you guys have Palmer for that one though.

  17. Happy Birthday Brett!!

  18. my uncle paulie’s neice beatrice’s ex-boyfriend seamus went to the wgu with Fitzy, that boy is wicked smart

  19. Honestly, I’m not sure how to feel about this news. On paper, it should be a no brainer Jets victory. But the Jets didn’t destroy Cassel in week two, and in fact, the dump off tosses have been the Jets achilles heel. After a bye week, with much hubris(I always wanted to use that word !), I can see this team being overly confident, despite its past history after a bye. It reminds me of how the Yankees always seem to make rookie pitchers they face look like Cy Young. I guess the best way to describe my feelings about this game is… cautiously optimistic. If we can stop the run, and force Fitzy to try to beat us, similar to what we did with Chad, then I see us victorious. If Perry/Watson/Benson turn into Kevin Faulk, then we’ve got problems. Also, I really, really want to see our running attack get unleashed!

  20. The Jets have a way of making backup QB’s look like SB champs so I’m worried. Aditionally, I’m like 2-17 lifetime when I go to a game….and I’m going Sunday.

Perhaps BF will change all that?

  21. Stop all of this Jet fan mentality. Always expecting the worst. We’ll win easily. Be confident and positive for once.
