How Much Time Will Jesse Chatman See?

by Bassett on October 10th, 2008 at 10:52 am

RB Jesse Chatman is back from his suspension and reporters asked Mangini yesterday whether Chatman would see time on the field and how much they could expect him to play?

He’s done a really good job. He worked out a bunch when he was not here and you can tell that.  The first day he was back he had a ton of reps and wasn’t really fazed by it. So he had obviously been doing a lot of work, not just in the weight room, but in terms of conditioning and (there) really hasn’t been much of a dropoff or anything like that.  [Whether he will play] comes down to those last few decisions there.  Jesse does do a good job on special teams, which is definitely a consideration and usually that’s the determining factor in that group.  We have two more days here, two more phases of teams. We’ll see how that goes and try to make a decision later.

So nothing is finalized, and it doesn’t sound definitive other than if he’s activated you’ll definitely see him on specials.  As to whether he’s worked into the offensive gameplan, they were giving him the ball in practice.  I’dnot be surprised if he got a few carries … maybe an odd series here or there, or maybe situationally.  At most, I wouldn’t expect him to have more than five carries unless Jones is totally ineffective.

I think the Jets running game will only blossom if the idea of “starter” is thrown out and the CS can get the group to buy into the total team philosophy. None of these guys is an all around, dominant running back. Jones is a handful once he gets going but needs a well defined hole, Chatman has quicker feet but is also tough enough to grind and slash inside and Leon has the outside speed and is the most deadly in space. Get ‘em all involved.

Thomas Jones is always ineffective, the guy is so overrated it’s not even funny. Take the carries away from him, he sucks.
