It was an early bye week for the Jets, but the Jets come back rested, rejuvenated and if the locker room over the past two weeks is any indicated relaxed for a soft stretch in their schedule. This weekend, the Jets face a Bengals team, that although is 0-5, showed signs of life last week in a narrow loss to the Cowboys. All the same, a team that has been pulling itself together took a big blow when Coach Marvin Lewis announced that Carson Palmer not being able to start this weekend, and backup Ryan Fitzpatrick was slated to play … you can always tell a Harvard man …
Storylines to consider today …
3-0 Post Bye Week? — So far, Mangini is 2-0 after the bye taking on the Patriots in his first season, and the Steelers in 2007. Can Mangini continue his trend? Will the arrival of his third child have been a distraction from his extra film study?
Jets Run Offense v. Bengals Run Defense - The Bengals have struggled to stop the run this season but with the way the Jets have struggled to run the ball too, you have to wonder which will win .. the resistible force or the movable object. The Jets have only had one good running game so far against Miami in the opener, but since then the team has not done much in this respect. If the Jets can’t run against this team this weekend, then they don’t deserve to. Expect to see Thomas Jones go for more than 4 yards a carry, but look for Leon and maybe even Jesse Chatman to play a bigger role.
Jets Pass Offense v. Bengals Pass Defense - The Jets have to know that the Bengals struggle with stopping top receivers but play well against third/slot types. Due to that, when the Jets do pass the ball, look for Coles and Cotchery to have big days. The Jets should be able to run most routes on this secondary, but they’ll be best throwing away or far from safety help. CB Leon Hall is hot for the Bengals and has 8 Passes Defensed already this season so look for Favre to pick his spots against him.
Jets Run Defense v. Bengals Run Offense - The Bengals had a field day last year against the Jets, but this year with Kris Jenkins and Calvin Pace, their chances at running the ball should be quite different. The Bengals have been terrible in his respect so far this season, but the real unknown is new arrival Cedric Benson. The Bengals might give Ced a larger share of the carries, which could be a boost for this unit. The Jets defenders would be wise to try to punch the ball out on Chris Perry, who has not been able to hold onto the ball this season.
Jets Pass Defense v. Bengals Pass Offense - The gameplan must have been tweaked some to account for Ryan Fitzpatrick rather than Carson Palmer. Fitzy is much more of a scrambling QB than Palmer, so the Jets are going to account for containing him on pressures. There’s no question that the Bengals have great receivers, and the Jets are going to need to roll help Dwight Lowery’s way. Look for the team to tinker with some funky secondary alignments … it seems to be Mangini’s M.O. when he has an extra week to prepare. There’s not a lot of tape on Fitzpatrick though, so the Jets would be wise to bring some pressure on him, but look sharp against the slot / tight ends / backs as it will be where Fitzy is most comfortable.

IT CAN ALL END WIT THE FLIP OF THE CIN. IF THE JETS GET THE BALL FIRST IT’LL BE A LONG GAME FOR THE BENGALS. THE MOMENTUM WILL BE O NTHE THE JETS SIDE FOR A WHILE. I CAN SEE THEM SCORE 7 BY RUNNING THE BALL STRAIGHT DOWN THE FIELD ON THEIR FIRST POSESSION. AFTER THAT THE PASSING GAME WILL OPEN UP FOR BRETT. 30-7 JETS WIN!!
no doubt….as i said in another thread….
big jets win….solid, rather ho-hum take care of business type of day at home….get to 3-2, don’t get anbody hurt…win, and ready to move on to next week…we have to get to 5-2 when we face the bills
btw -
any group of jets fans down the jersey shore….red bank way? if so, where do you hang to watch the games?
I am going to be in Burlington NJ today. Does anyone know if Comcast CBS will broadcast the Jets game today?? Eagles play at 4:00 and the Giants on MNF. These family oarties are killing me this year…….Thanks
I will be on the 50 yd line for cowboys cardinals….a little vacation away from nyc…
but i will be getting regular updates from my boyz…. so if we lose to a backup QB….we got probs!!
get up early….go after the backup like your supposed to sutton!!!
dont let him sit back and get comfy!!!!
jets 27-10…. holla
Yeesh, that was quick. *smacks forehead*
I dont understand why we are not running the ball up the middle. Is Brett in NY to pat his Hall of Fame stats or is he here to win. Brett is not the only one that plays for the Jets. Use the runnig game and defense. Hardnose football. Lets go lets go!!! This should be a no nonsense game. Dominate the line early!!
-Going for it on fourth down early in the year is BIG!!!! CONFIDENCE!!!!
WEIRD FIRST QUARTER!!! THE BENGALS O AND JETS D ARE STILL ON THE SIDELINE WITH 7 AND HALF MINUTES LEFT!!
Getting that quick touchdown back is key. Time for the defense to show itself.
–RUN BLITZ FIRST DEFENSIVE PLAY. GET TO THE HARVARD QB QUICKLY.DONT GIVE HIM TIME TO THINK!
WE WILL AVERAGE 4 YDS PER CARRY TODAY.
ARE ALL THESE TRICK PLAYS FOR US THE FANS? TO QUIET US AND THE PRESS UP!! LOOKS GOOD..
I like our field position so far. Reggie pinned the Bengals within their own five, and we now have good field position again after we stopped the Bengals.
Hopefully we can keep this up.
LC HAS TO MAKE THAT CATCH!! IS HE SURPRISED HE’S GETTING THROWN TOO?
Hopefully we can keep the lead now.
Favre and Coles seem to have a decent rythym goung
TIME FOR A RUSHING TD FOR THE JETS!!! BREAK OPEN JONES!!
THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!! DO I KNOW MY JETS!!
Alright. Titans jersey for the rest of the year.
RIGHT ON. AND NO MORE TRICK PLAYS FOR THE REST OF THE GAME. JUST RUN IN DOWN THE MIDDLE AGAIN. WE NEED FOUR YDS ON EVERY PLAY. BENGALS ARE GOING TO STAY HOME ON EVERY PLAY NOW. NOT TOO BAD OF A PUNT. GOOD HANGTIME.
NO PEVENT DEFENSE …ITS TOO EARLY!!!! BENGALS ARE ONLY DOWN 10.
God, the Titans jerseys are ugly. but they work!
THE UGLIER THE BETTER!!!
Who fell asleep in the review booth?
Also, I cant believe I am agreeing with Fouts, but there is no excuse for the D to ease up on the gas. You don’t have them pinned inside the 5 so you stop bringing pressure?
Incompetent refs just gave the Bengals four points. I can’t tell who’s worse, NFL or NBA refs. Thanks a lot idiots.
Chad has TD passes of 80 and 53 yards. What?
THIS GAME SHOULD’VE BEEN OVER BY NOW. BRETT IS ONE PASS AWA FROM LOSING THIS GAME RIGHT NOW. RUN THE BALL FOR GOD SAKES!!
DID CHAD THOW THE BALL 80 YDS OR 50YDS? THE YAC HELPS HIM OUT ALOT. THERE ONLY UP ONE.
COTCHERY HAS SOME HANDS.. AND LC!!
BRETT INTO AS GOOD AS A PUNT!!!! NOW FOR THE DEFENSE!
We were at the 31. Another five yards or so and we could’ve kicked a field goal and gone up two scores. Not good decision-making by Favre.
Whats wrong with Jenkins?
YOU ARE RIGHT JOE B. BUT YOU GOTTA TAKE THE POSITIVE.
THAT PACE IS A GREAT ATHLETE.!!!
RUN JONES RUN!!!
JUST UN IT AND TAKE HTE FIELD GOAL. DON’T GET GREEDY MANGINI!! DONT BE LIKE THOSE GUYS IN THE STOCK MARKET.
SO MANY PASSES THAT CHAD WOULDNT BE ABLE TO MAKE TODAY. CANT WAIT TO PLAY MIAMI AGAIN.
Hats off to the defense. Really carried us today, giving up just seven points, and if it weren’t for that blown call, it would’ve been only three.
More importantly, hope Cotch and Jenkins are both OK..
WE HAVE A PASSRUSH!!!!!!!
Thank you Houston!
AND MIAMI LOSSES!! HOW ABOUT THAT? OHHHH MY!!! 3 SECONDS LEFT ON THE CLOCK CAN CHAD THROW IT 50-60 YDS? MAYBE IF HE TAKES A TEN STEP RUN!!
Again the JETS were betrayed by their coaching. Thought the play calling was too conservative. Favre only threw down field a couple of times. Are the Bengals DBs that good?
I concur with whoever said the JETS lack the killer instinct. And at the end of the 1st half, doesn’t anyone on Defense know how to call a timeout? Or how about the JETS coaches calling a timeout?? They were clearly not ready for both QB sneaks. And how about Mangini challenging the catch which wasn’t a catch?? Were the coaches asleep or the replay officials?
What is frustrating is the JETS were clearly the better team on the field, but they played down to the Bengals level and kept them in the game.
Pace played a great game today. But where was Bryan Thomas???
Editor, you can’t challenge inside two minutes. That was up to the booth, and they blew it. The Jets even called a timeout to give the booth more time to look at it.
The defense certainly had the killer instinct today, allowing rightfully only three points. A few bad turnovers are the only reason this game wasn’t a blowout. It wasn’t pretty, but I’ll take it, as although it was closer than I thought it would be at times, I never really felt like the Jets were actually going to lose.
Good win for the Jets, it gives them some nice momentum going into Oakland next week.
The Editor
The Jets could not challenge that non catch, that one is on the replay officials. As far as being to conservative, I agree they are still using the Chad playbook.
I guess we won’t be hearing from Nickolas this week.
Before the game I saw Jets’ Owner Woody Johnson walking along the sidelines with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren — It was awesome –
THERE WERE SOME BRETT PLAYS. THAT PUSHED THE DEFENSE DBs BACK A BIT. THEN THEY WENT TO THE CHAD PLAYBOOK. THOSE ARE THE PLAYS THAT THE JETS ARE USED TO PLAYING. I’M SURE THEY’LL MIX IN MORE FEVRE PLAYS HERE AND THERE WHEN NEEDED. YOU DONT WANT TO SHOW ALL YOUR PLAYS BEFORE YOU REALLY NEED THEM. IM SURE MANGINI HAS SOME PLAYS HIDDEN FOR THE BILLS GAME OR EVEN IF HE NEEDS IT BEFORE THEN.
-SOON YOU’LL SEE HIM ROLE LEFT OR RIGHT AND THROW DOWNFIELD.
