That’s a New York Jets….first down?!?

I know that Woody Johnson likes all things New England, but the fact that we stole their “first down” cheer is absurd. I hate that stupid cheer. I was at the playoff game in Foxboro in 2006 and made fun of all the Pats fan and they stupid cheer. Now we’re doing it? This must end and it must end now!

Ps. Thanks Nicole for those great seats!

“That’s a New York Jets…” Then the crowd goes “first down”

  1. Wasn’t at game. What is cheer?

  2. i agree…..that first down chant is GARBAGE. stop it now.

  3. drose:

Those that consider yesterday’s win as ugly are wrong, it was difficult, not ugly. There is a huge difference. Every player going in knew it was not going to be easy and although it was made more difficuly by farves three turn overs it was still a good win.

Most of the credit must be given to the defense and we will go as far as the deffense will take us this year, which if you are keeping track, the count is defense 2 wins the offense 1.

Reminder: With 18 sacks in 5 games we are right on track to realize my offseason prediction of equaling or setting a new team sack record this year !!!!

  4. I disagree. I am already practicing my New England accent, eating creamy clam chowda, buying Kraft mac’n cheese, and bathing in maple syrup.

After all why would New Yorkers think an original thought? Do they do anything unique?

If I hear any of my friends do that cheer they will get a smack! That cheer is for people that have only become football fans in the past 7 years and don’t know what a first down is yet.

  5. I was at the game. What Cheer are you even talking about?

  6. I was at the Jets at Miami game last year and the dolphins did the same thing. That’s another Miami Dolphins…First Down.

  7. Yea we should stop copying those cheaters beside we already have an awesome cheer , the best cheer as a matter of fact

  8. was at NE-SD game last night. Oh what fun it was to get my section going with “Boston Sucks” cheers.

  9. 100% agree. It gives me douche chills every time the crowd does it. So many people do it I thought I was the odd man out for hating it.

  10. Actually, that cheer isall over the country. I live out in
California now, and the Fresno State fans do the same thing.

  11. It’s more than just a NE thing. It’s used at Rutgers games all the time. I kind of just figured they stole it from them.

  12. I was at the game yesterday and I am guilty of doing it, however I was also at the NE – JETS Playoff game in 06 and watched the crowd do it many times so when the Jets got a first down in that game I would stand up and scream it right back at them, I dont really see what the animosity towards that cheer is

    Just Win Baby!

  13. Eh… other teams not named the Patriots do the chant as well… I don’t really care for it or hate it.

    Seattle does it as well…

  14. Okay, I have to go off-topic here. Before the draft, I was pounding the table, taking on seanmac, for months because I though Matt Ryan was in the Carson Palmer/Big Ben caliber of franchise QBs. I was flamed repeatedly. So, this is my “I told you so” post. Matty Ice is authoring one of the greatest rookie seasons by a QB in the modern era. I know, Big Ben and Marino had awesome rookie campaigns, but they joined powerhouse teams. Ryan is doing this with a piss-poor team, coming off of a 4-12 season.

I think Favre is a tremendous QB and I’m willing to bet that Arthur Blank would never have traded his pick because he needed the face of his franchise to change (the Jets could’ve traded up, I bet the Rams would’ve taken a package). But, if the Jets don’t groom a franchise QB after having all of these high draft picks, the Favre years will be like a short drug high that will quickly fade when the reality of KC as the QB sinks in.

Lots of folks thought I was unduly harsh on KC. Well, Ryan is a great example of what a quality inexperienced QB can do. KC is not the QB of the future. So, I’m enjoying Favre and I hope Ratliff ends up being our Tony Romo (but taller). However, sooner or later, this franchise has to come to terms with the fact that Favre is 39 and we as loyal Jets fan deserve a team of sustained success, not 2 season snippets (if that).

BTW, great win, even if Favre was out of synch. It’s like a blinked and the Jets front 7 morped into Bud Carson’s group from the mid-80s. We have a tough road game next week. Oakland’s defense is good, but their offense sucks. An early lead is a must.

  15. I pretty sure that cheer is used at every Stadium in the country…

  16. I gotta be honest..I’m surprised how well Matt Ryan has played! He’s definitely showing alot so far.

other than the jets win, the best moment of yesterday was watching that qb sneak at the end of the Dolphin/Texans game! Gutsy call! I think he could have ran it in on the previous play, as well!

  17. I’m blown away by Matt Ryan. I’m waiting to see what he does in a really big game because everytime I watched him play a major game he nearly choked it away. I do owe you an apology so far Sack he has been unreal.

I still think you are unfair to KC though. I think the Jets offensive adjustments to Favre would give KC a system he can play better in oh and we have a line now. If anyone could show KC how to handle interceptions and use his arm it is Brett.

  18. To play devil’s advocate slightly:

Ryan was great yesterday and the throw to set up the winning FG was clutch (but we knew he was capable of that from the VT game in his senior year).

His numbers look good now, but going into the game were underwhelming (54%, 75.3 rating, 4TDs 3ints and under 175 yards per game, despite several long plays).

Chicago pretty much stacked the box and Ryan capitalized, leading 6 scoring drives (albeit with just one TD). However, just being able to do that puts him ahead of some people (and doesn’t seem like something a “terrible pro prospect” would be able to do!)

So, while it may be a little early to start carving his bust for Canton, Ryan is on the road to being a decent QB (he’s already better than Mike Vick).

For full disclosure, I said I though Ryan would be pretty good, but wasn’t prepared to take the financial risk and stand by the decision now, regardless of the Favre move. And even seanmac came around on him eventually to some extent.

Oh, and I get to see Ryan in person in two weeks so will report back.

Kudos, Sack, but let’s see if he can maintain it for the season. If he does, they have a shot at the division.

  19. Anything is better than the PC Richard Whislte, EVERY TIME.

  20. Ryan has been very impressive so far, though Bent is right to point out that his overall numbers look much better today than they did yesterday, when his completion percentage was terrible and his TD-INT ratio wasn’t much to look at. But credit where credit is due—he’s playing, very, very well for a rookie, much better than I would have guessed. I’m not sure how the rest of the big and tall argument is faring—Derek Anderson is flaming out spectacularly and the best quarterback in the league is 6’0”—but Ryan is looking like he can play.

And, it must be said, so does Chad. Anybody still think he’s all washed up?

  21. Save the qb of the future controversy for the offseason and april, Matty Ice is definatly playing great tho

  22. i agree that the cheer is annoying, but if something needs to be changed it has to be the replay situation on the screen….we never get to see replays and when you do its only plays that went well against the jets. Someone on the bengals could have had the greatest catch in the history of the NFL yesterday and they wouldnt show a replay.

  23. I know that the interceptions can be depressing, but they were not game killers. I thought that the Jets victory yesterday was a huge statement in a day of upsets. Look how many first string QBs were injured?
The Pack played against a third string QB and a team that is weaker than the Bengals. For every interception, Brett makes some throws that seem impossible, but there is a price to pay.

Just now, it was announced that Romo is out for four weeks.

The Jet fans should be optimistic especially after the Pats went down worst than the Jets to the Chargers. Except for maybe the Giants, we are looking at a season of any given Sunday…..

  24. Credit is due Ryan, certainly. I was wary of the huge investment, especially trading up where he’d cost even more in cash and picks. I would add that Michael Turner definitely helps. TJ had a nice game yesterday but Turner is definitely affecting defensive game plans. I’d been riding the Falcons in my pool but got off them this week, thinking the rookie will finally crack against the tough Bears and Ryan proved me wrong. Good for him.

As for Chad, he deserves credit for playing very well, too. But again, he’s got at least one, and possibly two, pro-bowl caliber backs if Ricky regains top form . And, for me, Chad must be judged on playoff performance against the AFC’s top defenses playing at their peak with a whole season of film to watch. That’s where he fell short IMO, even before many considered him “washed up.”

  25. Chad had BS yards this week. The 53 yarder was a duck and a half on a trick play and the 80 yarder was a short screen that went long. He didn’t do anything magnificant.

  26. Chad has been the most efficient quarterback in football to this point in the season. Even without yesterday’s games, he is leading the league in DVOA, and he’s doing it on a team with zero viable receivers. Give him his due.

  27. I liked lastyears chant. Thats another NY JETs

one yard short of a first down marker

  28. i dont care wat the hell we say or chant….as long as we are making first downs

  29. Wrs ha Chad only throws to running backs anyway. jk

Fasano is a decent TE and Chad has the advantage of a tricky offense keeping defenses from game planning against him. Chad is doing what Chad has always done. He isn’t blowing my skirt up tho. He has had a lot of help and no one is giving the Dolphins D their due credit. His numbers may factor out great but he isn’t winning games for them he is just playing a part. When they think Henne is ready he should start. He adds a whole new dimension to their team.

  30. I agrre the chant is ridiculous. it’s not even a high shcool level chant. there are a bunch of idiots in my section, 323, that do it and it’s ridiculous.

one guy does it with his mother and the past couple of seasons they even had some choreographed dance that was really pathetic.

  31. why pathetic? their just having fun….dont be so miserable…i will take your tickets off u if u dont like who u sit with…. thanks

  32. Matty-Ice has been playing well, but let’s not get carried away, Sack. “Experts” were all gushing about matt leinart and vince young as being the future Jets QBs that got away…

Also, I like Chad alot, but I was giggling to myself as i was watching the last seconds of that Houston game when CP needed to throw a hail mary attempt, but alas, he is not that kind of QB anymore….

  33. They do that stupid cheer at Dolphins (Im a Jets fan in Miami)
I was a the first game of the year, every g’damn first down…And that another Miami Dolphins…FIRST DOWN!!!
stupid chant, none tops J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!!!!!!

  34. I agree completely with Dave Heinz. Why can’t they get rid of the horrible PC Richards whistle? Now, Yankees stadium has the whistle too.

I know the whistle is an add, not a cheer, but does the rest of the world outside of NY know that?

As for the topic of this thread, the “another first down” cheer is totally from Gillette Stadium and should cease immediately.

  35. Ed L. you’re right pathetic might have been a little strong, but it still bad.

but you know what is just as annoying – when they only show Retired Fireman Ed lead the J-E-T-S chant. last year was so much better when he wasn’t around and they showed other people doing it.

  36. DONT CARE ABOUT THE CHANT JUST KEEP THE CHAINS MOVING

  37. The Dolphins do the same thing.

  38. Relax Sackdance, Brett Jr is the real deal. 2 Years of excellence with Farve, two years of our O-line jelling, and we we have a nice smooth transition to Ratliff.

PS: We win the freakin game, and you guy’s just HAVE to have something to bitch about…so you pick some chant that 50% of the people at the game didn’t even notice. Jeez.

  39. What was with all the WR screen passes? Did a single one break for more than 3 yards?

Im happy wtih our pass protection, but I am still not seeing much out of that oline in terms of run block. That cincy run D is one of the worst in the nfl, and Tom J still wasn’t breaking any runs.

I’m glad that we’re finally starting to gel during a critical part of the season (3 easy game streak through KC). It’s frustrating, now, seeing how we should have taken one from either NE or SD.

  40. Screw you all I want Sam Bradford, but there is no way the Jets will get him. He is gonna be better than Matty Ice

  41. Let’s just take it easy before we put Matt Ryan in the HOF. So far so good, but it is way too early. and as far as comparing him to KC: The Falcons have one of the best running games in the league, very sold O-line as well. What did KC have? We all know that answer. Let MR go through the season at least before we make judgments.

Seanmac, MOST (not all) of the Chad detractors do not think he is washed up. We feel he is too limited. He proved it again yesterday. At the end of the game, the dolphins were driving for the winning score and Chad threw a pick. Very typical.

  42. Point taken, but that’s a bit harsh, Pete. Chad’s pass was dropped by his receiver into the defensive player’s hands (and then the interceptor fumbled it away, Miami got the ball back and Chad led the winning TD drive anyway – only for the D to choke it away).

  43. …..so while Chad was throwing a late pic, and losing to a team with no wins, Favre drove his team downfield for a TD, while taking almost 6 minutes off the clock to effectively end the game. Bottom line, Favre and the Jets took care of business yesterday and Chad and the Dolphins didn’t. That is exactly why the Jets traded for Favre. Thank you Mike Tannenbaum.

Again, to all the Chad supporters, please, go root for him and the Dolphins. There is nothing wrong with that. But, in my opinion, if you keep bringing up former Jets that are on other teams, then you’re not a good Jet fan. I would rather watch a Jet game sandwiched between a Dolphin fan and a Patriot fan, then next to someone who claims to be a Jet fan, but keeps whining about and pineing for Chad. At least I could respect those other 2 for supporting their teams.

  44. No one is whining for Chad. If you would like to point to any posts from people wishing Chad was playing instead of Favre, good luck finding them. Pointing out that Chad is playing well is hardly whining. And he is playing well.

  45. I think I was also the lead cheerleader of the “play Chad, bench KC” contingent, too. I like Chad, but he has obvious limitations. When he’s on, he can methodically lead a team to the redzone. Recognizing that Chad has not been a good redzone QB, Miami developed the “wildcat” for Ronnie Brown, a brilliant move. I think Chad is doing what Chad does, but Favre has done and can do more.

Yes, Ryan may flame out and he has to improve his completion percentage, but he is having a tremendous rookie season. It’s early and the Falcons still look like a 7-9 or 8-8 team, which is far better than anyone reasonably expected, but if Matty Ice gets the Falcons into the playoffs in his rookie season, he’ll be flirting with one of the best rookie seasons for a QB ever. Not even I predicted that, but I did think he would make a competent first-year starter, which is all or more than what you want from a high draft pick. Also, I’d feel a lot better if Gholston flashed some NFL competence. If you add VG’s contract plus what Favre is paid, Matty Ice looks like a bargain.

Bent, I know the point is that after the Bears game, Matty Ice’s stats looked better, but the Bears have also made Peyton and McNabb look pedestrian. Beating the Bears in 11 seconds is pretty special, something you would expect from a Manning or McNabb.

  46. Pete, Speaking of former Jets… We should have a Vilma/D Robertson watch to see how our future draft picks are looking!

I felt ashamed when I blurted out when Pennington came out for the last play “What? Is he going to throw it to the 20?” He still and always will deserves our respect.

  47. One writer (O’Connor from the Bergen Record) suggested we seriously trade for the Chief’s TE Tony Gonzalez by Tueday’s tradeline…it is reported that the Giants offered a 6th round pick to the Chief’s for him. My question is do you all think we need Tony Gonzalez, what compensation is he worth and how much better would our Jets be with him? Obviously, we would have to trade or release one of our current TE’s as we are full at that position….

  48. Totally agree. First down chant must end. The crappy music that they play during practice must change as well. No class, no taste.

  49. I don’t know about Vilma or Robertson, but I saw that “Saint” Pete Kendall foolishly tried to run with a tipped pass, fumbled, the Rams scored and that TD killed the Skins.

    Cut Bubba, trade for Gonzo!!!

  50. First of all, I like Chad. I was happy to see him go, but I like him. Here’s my point:

Anyone has the right to come on this blog and talk about Pennington or anyone else for that matter. By the same token I can voice my displeasure at it. I’m a positive person and a Jets fan. I want to talk/ read/ discuss the Jets. We have a good team that can get better. We have a new QB who most of us love, but some don’t. There are people who want Chad to have a great season. Well guess what? That would mean the Dolphins are doing well, our division rival. That’s bad if you’re a Jet fan, get it? I’m not saying I want Chad to be horrible and embarassed, but I do not want the Dolphins to do well, therefore I do not want Chad to do well.

There are so many positive things to talk about with the Jets, and areas of concern. I personally would like to concentrate on those.

  51. AHEM! When I heard this through my television speakers, I almost threw up. I don’t care what other teams do it, but if the Fish and those chowda eatin the British aah commin toolboxes do this, then we don’t do it, plain and simple.

Of note, I’ve been to Gillette and it made me freak out how much they did it (how many first downs they had). What is next, endless clips of Welcome to the Jungle?

  52. Trade Baker for Gonzalez.

  53. Let’s talk about next week. The Jets have to establish a running game. I like that they are passing alot, but we need to grind out some yards on the ground. Also they should blitz J. Russell and force him into mistakes. We must win!!!

  54. After Baker’s total whiff on the block leading to the Favre blindside hit/fumble, I’d be happy to swap him for T. Gonzalez. I don’t know what Gonzalez’ contract looks like but the Jets are tight to the cap and it seems unlikely.

    Bent?

  55. Tony Gonzalez:
    1/12/2006: Signed a five-year, $35 million contract. The deal includes $17.75 million in guarantees. 2008: $1 million, 2009: $4 million, 2010: $4.5 million, 2011: $5.75 million, 2012: Free Agent

  56. Drose: You actually have the chant wrong. It’s “and that…is *another* New York Jets…first down!!!”. They’ve actually had this in place since the late nineties, but this is the first time they’ve had an offense that actually gets first downs with enough regularity that you would notice it. OK, not really.

Pete57: Your Pennington argument has its merits, but I still say you can’t use this Sunday’s game to strengthen your case. Pennington did all he could do (as I said the interception was not his fault and, as I said, he did actually lead them on a go-ahead TD drive, but it was their defense that blew it). If Baker bobbles Favre’s third down pass at the goalline and it is picked off and then the Bengals drive down for the winning score, is that Favre’s fault? But I agree, we dwell too much on Chad. For the record we all went crazy when Schaub scored the winning TD.

Repoman: Denver’s line looked good last week – with and without D-Rob. He rotates in and out though, so I don’t hold out much hope for the % of snaps clause, whatever that may be (several different versions were reported and, knowing the Jets, they were probably all worse than the actual position). Vilma this week against the Raiders was awesome. He made plays in the backfield. Solid, knock-back hits, the likes of which we never saw out of him in the 3-4, whether that be because of dicomfort with the scheme or his knee. And he played deep into the fourth quarter even though it was a blowout. As sack says, Pete Kendall goofed badly this week and was pretty distraught afterwards. Meanwhile, John Abraham is leading the league in sacks. And Justin McCareins in averaging 16.5 yards per catch for the 5-0 Titans.

Jon: The key isn’t to blitz Russell to force him into mistakes, but rather to drop guys back and mix up the coverages and bait him into bad throws. Colt David did this perfectly on Sunday. Right now, Russell has no chemistry with his receivers whatsoever. Blitzing him is risky, because if you get to him, he is still strong enough to stay upright and make a throw.

Subwayfare: The Jets are about 1.7m under the cap having restructured Kenyon Coleman’s deal a few weeks ago. Trading Baker, who was recently extended, but with only a $1m signing bonus, creates over $1m of dead cap space (which reduces the spending money available for next year) and would actually use up a net of about $250K against this year’s cap because the cap hit exceeds the salary saved. I think Gonzo’s cap number is $1m so they could theoretically just about afford him, but it would tie them up completely if they needed to make another move. Gonzo could then be cut or traded next year for no cost, or retained, where I think his cap number would be $4m – again something which the Jets may struggle to afford if looking to fill other needs. I can’t see it, but it is possible financially. If the Jets think it is going to make them a better team, they might consider it, but age, future financial flexibility and the question of whether he is an upgrade until he has learned the system will all be taken into account.

  57. I like Gonzo as much as the next guy…but getting him is NOT what we should be doing. We should be calling the Iggles about their unhappy CB Shepperd!

  58. I agree with Nick. Is TE really a need right now? How many over-aged, [possibly] one-year-and-done HOF players can the Jets bring in?

  59. Two things about Ryan:

    1) He has a running game. Michael Turner has killed in some games.

    2) His receivers, namely Roddy White , were performing even last year when they had a nobody back there.

I think that team was looking good and all they needed was a QB so I disagree that they were piss poor even though they were 4-12.

  60. “Attention Jets fans, the Jets have entered the Heinz Red Zone.”

    Does anyone remember that one?

What I was upset about was the Bengals coming out as a team on defense. I couldn’t yell “Sucks” after every players name.

  61. Thanks, Bent. I figured as much. As great as Gonzalez is, it’s just not a big enough need for the Jets to jam themselves into such a tight spot.

Shepherd would certainly improve the secondary but I though the whole issue with him was that he wants a boatload of money.

I’m happy for all the former Jets doing well elsewhere as long as they don’t negatively affect the Jets season in any way. I also shrieked with joy when Schaub ran that ball in. Though I cried when they blew the two-point conversion costing me at least a push in my pool.

Vilma’s a great fit in the NO 4-3. Second in the league in tackles, I think. Good for him. Don’t recall the details on that trade but hope it’s performance based and he keeps it up. Unless we face him in the SB, of course. D-Rob has missed one game, I think, and has 6 tackles over 5. Wouldn’t count on getting anything there.
