K Mike Nugent Still Not Ready?
Eric Mangini spoke briefly yesterday about Mike Nugent’s recovery from his hamstring injury earlier this season. On the subject, Mangini stated that “I’m not sure, I wouldn’t even touch on that until Friday, just because guys have the week and they are up and down.”
We’re getting close to the tolerance point where putting Mike Nugent on IR would have been an acceptable move. If Mangini doesn’t feel comfortable making a call on Nugent yet, then it’s clear that K Jay Feeley might not be the player released today to make room for Eric Smith’s return from suspension. Look for the Jets to waive Will Montgomery again, or possibly another player who has been inactive so far for much of the season … like Marques Murrell.

Let him go, one of the worst picks in team history.
I hope they keep Murrell.
Feely is better. His kickoffs are generally high and deep and a touchback is a distinct possibility. After the “yips” on his first attempt as a Jet, he’s been pretty good at FGs. If the Jets cut Nugent, no other team would pick him up, so invite him back in the off-season.
If I were the Saints I would pick him up. I wouldn’t make an assumption that he would be around or devalue him and Feely blows.
Personally, I miss those Nugent kickoffs to the 10 or so. Much better than those crappy deep ones other teams use.
Seriously, has Nugent ever kicked one in the endzone. Kickers in this league are expendable, yet valuable. Stick with Feely for now, then try to sign someone in the offseason. I’m already writing Nugent off as a bust. HATE HATE HATE!
I think he kicked one or two but only on very windy days.
And he was our first pick in the 05 draft.
Everyone including myself thought he had more room for development out of collage, he just didn’t. Don’t know why, my guess is a lack of focus on strength and conditioning, in today’s NFL the kickers should not get hurt, especially if they did what they need to do in the off season. I would place him on injured reserve force him in the weight room and look for improvement in the off-season if there is none let him go.
Feely is 6-8 (would be 6-9 but for a defensive penalty). That’s 75%…worse than Nugent’s numbers for every year he’s been in the league. Nugent was a crazy draft pick, but he’s decent enough. I don’t get what cutting him for an inferior kicker that wasn’t a crazy draft pick achieves other than some dead cap space.
I prefer the kickoffs that land at the ten to the ones which get returned 108 yards by Ellis Hobbs, that’s for sure!
Bent-
You are really good about getting stats. Why don’t we find them for the NFL based on where the kick lands. I’ll bet touch backs are better. Except for one Hobbs kick, Nugent has been very responsible for the field position problems the past several years. It’s just silly to keep defending him as anything more than an average kicker. Remember, percentage is a factor of whether the coaches want to bother with longer field goals. From inside the 35 he is no different than the average guy. Cutting him may not be the answer now, but I would sure like to see these guys bring in every available guy in the offseason. I don’t know what it is but every time he runs out there I expect a screw up of some kind.
It is time for New York to cut their loses with “Nuge” despite his hard work he hasn’t been able to produce what everyone had expected and wanted from him and Jay Feely isn’t the answer so now is the time to start “kicker hunting” because Nugent is doing New York any favors at this point.
Feely is better than Nugent. Look at the field position gained and the resulting wins.
Will Montgomery got released again
Nuge was high pick for a kicker and no doubt a reaction to the two misses that lead an early post season exit in Pittsburgh during Herm’s era.
Now, that we’ve got him, let’s keep ‘em! Yeah, I know our depth chart has too many QB’s, Wide Receivers and Kickers, but we exposed Ratliff, Ainge’s tallent and Henry’s potential in the preseason plus Clowney, Nugent got hurt.
We got some relief with Ben Graham getting the boot. Hopefully, we’ll get good news on Nuge this Friday.
I hope to use or lose Brad Smith (maybe copycat the wilcat). Thank God, we kept Wallace Wright – if it was ever a question?
He’s looking like he can earn a trip to Honolulu.
Here is some college datat on kickoffs I found on the net.
