Game Recap: Oh-h-h Not Again

by Andrew Weiss on October 19th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

I’ve got nothing to say.  You write the recap.  I’m disgusted.

I know I’m supposed to give you the good and the bad.  Describe the plays that worked and the ones that didn’t.  But, I’m just not up to it.

I can’t bring myself to describe Brett Favre’s performance which left me alternately thrilled and apalled.  There must be a high incidence of heart disease in Green Bay considering my general agitation each and every game this season when the offense has the ball.  I can’t begin to describe outside receivers remaining covered nine plays out of ten despite facing one of the world’s worst secondaries.  I can’t describe Chris Baker, who never met a yard-after-catch, and who fell down, with no help from anyone, in overtime with the game hanging in the balance.  All he had to do was remain upright and the ball would have hit him in the head but, upright was beyond him.  I can’t talk about 151 yards for Thomas Jones and not one of them contributing materially to an offensive point–all right, that’s an exaggeration.

I can’t bring myself to talk about the LW muff (I can think of another word) or either of the two Favre interceptions or protection that was inconsistent or a hopeless imbalance in effort–Oakland gave and gave and gave while we, mostly, looked asleep.

Have I mentioned the coaching?  In my opinion, and if you know me, you know I’ve been very reluctant to complain about the coaching staff, this was the worst offensive game plan in the Mangini era–maybe that’s too limiting.  It wasn’t that we didn’t have the playmakers.  The Arizona game should convince you that we have our share. We just don’t know how and I’m too soured by the outcome of the game to be fair.  I don’t want to be fair.  I suggest that t,he game plan was idiotic.  Shottenheimer would seem to have no clue how to build a dominating, sustainable, offensive system.  What were we doing starting off the game with a naked spread that traded shots on their defense for shots on Favre?  Why did we run once in the first two series?  Clearly, Oakland couldn’t stop the run.  That was proven over and over again.  But, we chose to dink and dunk with short passes and dump offs.  Where was the balanced attack?  When the Skins found out they could rip off yards against us they racked up 296 yards and won running.  We lost and I can’t even describe what we were doing.

Don’t anybody say the game was close.  Don’t say we should have won.  Muff you.  We deserved to lose and we played down to the competition.  Nobody to blame but (fill in the blank).  Sure we tied it up, twice.  The second time in electrifying fashion.  But, they wanted it more and they eventually got it.  Off the improbable foot of Sebastion Janikowski.  For the first fifty minutes, I had my hand over my eyes.  For the next twenty, I saw surprising and remarkable play.  Finally, we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.  Have I said yet that I’m disgusted.

I said I’d give it eight games.  Two years ago, I felt just like this when we lost to Cleveland at about the same point in the season.  Still, I need to go brush my teeth.  Judging by my thoughts, I’d better do some cleaning before I spit out any more words.

For anybody who says this isn’t a game recap, you’re right and – muff you, too!

Good points all. Mangina and company lose another game. I have friends at work who pull for Oakland hoping they would lose to get the first pick in the draft next year. UGGGHHH

  2. avatar Chase says:

The only thing worse than the Jets performance was Dick Enberg’s.

  3. avatar Jason, NY says:

I’m in total agreement with all of these points. As a lifelong Jets fan, I am sick and tired of the same let down year after year. Why is it that the other team always has the Jets number? It’s as if they know what play will be run on every down. Even when Favre has 5 seconds in the pocket…nobody can get open. Whenever there is a third down the Jets need, you can be sure they will not get it. I knew that they were not capable of putting together a scoring drive in overtime, and to have that gut feeling is unacceptable. They’re just so damn predictable that it makes me sick. Maybe it really does come with the uniform. The organization seems to have a losing attitude. Might they ever once just rise to the occasion?

  4. avatar Chase says:

The only thing worse than the Jets performance was Enberg’s.

  5. avatar Jason, NY says:

Oh and let’s not forget the absence of the “clutch turnover”. When is the last time the Jets forced one of those?

  6. avatar frank cina says:

predictability will lose in war, life and yes, in football. I can’t express how frustrating this defeat was. I see a lot of 1st & 2nd down running plays and not enough play action on 1st down with one of the best arms in f-ball. Defenses play the run first, pass second especially early in the game. Schott & Sutton don’t seem capable of enough deception. How about the Rhodes Blitz from the parking lot–what the …. I’m beginning to doubt Mangini too. This is a disturbing loss. The Oakland CBs are decent–really- but why is no one open ever. They’ll beat KC next week but I don’t want to hear about playoffs until they show me a hell of a lot more. They’re probably just an 8-8 team. the OL is a disappointment–pass blocking awful–run blocking ok this week–next week –take a guess

  7. avatar subwayfare says:

It’s hard to pick on a RB who gains 159 yards BUT…an NFL RB in the open field with only a safety to beat should equal touchdown.

What I believe to be the primary shortcoming of this coaching staff is basically being too smart for its own good. Being a “game plan” team – entirely transforming every week depending on the opponent – is all well and good for a successful, experienced team who’ve played together for a while, otherwise it’s like trying to walk before you can crawl.

It seems to me the Jets have to figure out a few things they do well and stick with it a bit more, regardless of who they’re playing, They just aren’t comfortable and cohesive enough as offensive and defensive units to reinvent themselves every week. Yet. You have to make sure that you are not just as surprised as your opponent by what you’re trying to do.

  8. avatar me says:

    same old jets

  9. avatar klecko71 says:

chase…enberg was brutal!! he got players wrong all day….

and i never liked him…thot it was bad karma he was calling the game…

  10. avatar me says:

thats why there is a mute button for worms like enberg

  11. avatar The Hanger says:

    Can you say Bill Cowher!!!!!!
This staff is a joke. Once again we fans have been had..

Where were our #1 draft picks?

  12. avatar TheRealRK says:

I don’t even know what to say about Dick Enberg, he must have gotten the wrong players called 10 times. The guy is way past his prime.

As for the jets, for me I gotta lay a ton of blame on this offensive line that has not shown any ability to have a complete game of stopping the pass rush and running consistently. Favre has not played well but it seems like 3 out of every 4 drop backs he he is either knocked down, forced out of the pocket etc…

I can’t give the coaching staff a pass for the lack of imagination. Actually they do have some imagination but they do a terrible job of adjusting. I don’t know what to think, six games in and then haven’t played a really good game yet. I don’t get it, now they are in a position where they need to steal a win in Buffalo or New England or Tennessee…ln face they might need two wins.

  13. avatar Kyle says:

Kerry Rhodes and Eric Smith have been an embarrassing safety tandem at best. Between the two of them, they have intercepted 1 pass, while defending 3 in 6 six games this season.

Jerricho Cotchery is not the player he was last season, and can’t seem to get open even when he has all the time in the world.

Thomas Jones has been having a good season. This is due to improved run blocking on the behalf of our offensive line, and the addition of Tony Richardson. However, due to the fact our WR’s can’t get open, the O-Line is letting Favre get sacked.

The play calling is just absolutely horrendous. Mangini’s job is to prepare his players for 16 football games. He isn’t doing his job, our players are out of shape and unmotivated.

And why isn’t David Harris making plays? What happened to Kerry Rhodes? Why is Eric Smith still on the team?

    This game made me sick.

  14. avatar Shtan says:

This game was an utter disgrace from the opening drive to the fatal Janikowski 57 yr FG. I agree completely with subwayfare…the Jets coaching and game plan was horrible. They are the most predictable team in the NFL. Why did the Jets run on 1s & 2nd down on all their OT drives? Oakland just sat back back waiting for it and stuffed the run on 2nd down. How come this team can’t complete pass plays to get 1st down on 3rd down? The offensive lines pass-blocking, especially with the 5 wide package had Favre scrambling for his life. The running game should have been incorporated in the first two drives. We got outplayed again on special teams…got totally caught off guard on the fake punt ( a gutsy call). The bottom line is the offense looked totally disjointed again….I’m beginning to have serious doubts about Mangini, Schottenheimer and Sutton….

  15. avatar Lafflin says:

Nobody on the team was great, although in fairness our D was good.
Favre though was terrible, it was as if he was trying to lose. How many of his would be interceptions were dropped today?
    Today’s a win with Pennington.

  16. avatar Ed L says:

i really do not like eric smith…. i dont even know why he is still on the team…. our secondary seems like they are playing so soft….it seems like they will give up the reception but are always there to tackle….when are we gonna step in front of one and pick it off….

and wtf is our pass rush???? i wanna see people moving around up front confusing a qb and blitzing from all over…. i really dont understand why we cant do this?

maybe one of the toolbag ny reporters can ask a good question for once and ask how come we dont have that type of defense anymore

  17. avatar swizzle81 says:

I agree, Rhodes and Smith have been awful, no Eric Smith is atrocious and shouldnt even be on the team. Let Elam start and by the way that was not a face mask penalty. Absolutely no pash rush whatsoever ,1 sack on the 2nd worst o-line in the league, inexcusable. Not forcing a turnover is also inexcusable.

Favre was horrendous for the second game in a row, his decision making is terrible, with the INT at the goal line. Oakland dropped 2 passes that should have been int’s. He is holding on to the ball way to long, also has to do with WR not getting open. Woody got beat several times today the rest of the line did a good job. I think Cotchery is hurt, he went into the locker room early, right before the half, theres something just not right with him. Schott is an awful play caller. Why the hell come out passing on the 1st 2 drives when Oaklands run-d is non existent. I could go on and on, they deserved to lose today.

  18. avatar mike rossetti says:

in ot the jets played not to lose instead of playing to win!!!!

  19. avatar pat d says:

In the last min. of regulation the Jets played to win. In OT the Jets played not to lose. Even I knew what play was going to be called in OT. In OT the Jets only threw the ball when they had to.

  20. avatar caveman says:

got a question, how the f has schottenheimer lasted this long. i don’t get it. he has sucked from day one. i don’t care what the media says, this dude is not ready to call the plays. i can’t list all the awful calls he’s made over the last couple years. we’re the fans here, we remember. what about “06″, he managed to call plays around pennington’s arm, but how many dumbass gadget plays did he put in when they had a chance to play real football. blame the coaching staff, but lets keep it simple, schottenheimer isn’t there yet. this team has insane amounts of talent, that’s the only reason they’re 3-3, instead of 0-6. they should be winning. players run the plays that get called. players practice the plays that the coaches say will win the game.

  21. avatar mike rossetti says:

your exactly right pat, they played with a sense urgency in the last minute of regulation because they had to, they should play with that same sense every play of every drive of every game! ive always been a mangini fan but this year i starting to wonder about his coaching abilities. why are they not using dustin keller more, i would much rather see him instead of baker or even as a slot reciever, i dont think theres a linebacker in the league that could keep up with him

  22. avatar caveman says:

oh yeah, almost forgot. eric smith blows dogs for quarters.

  23. avatar dakar says:

    andrew

i agree completely…obviously running the ball was working very well for us but we just had to play like we always do…and thats playing scared and always making every team no matter how bad they are look like their SB bound…i’ve had it with these bums…with so much talent on this tream and loose like this… makes me think we really dont have any talent at all…and lets not forget the bad coaching…on both sides of the ball…mangini better fire his cordinaters and hire some real ones cuz neither 1 knows what the hell is going on…or else he will be looking for a new job…they make me sick…

  24. avatar mike rossetti says:

HOW ABOUT A PLAY ACTION FAKE ON FIRST OR SECOND DOWN JUST ONCE IN OT!

  25. avatar Scott says:

As good a game as Thomas Jones had, the dude has absolutely no moves. 9 out of 10 starting NFL running backs would have taken a few of those 10-12 yard runs for 30 yards or more. When is the last time Jones made someone miss? Seriously. Also, how many times are we going to see Favre drop back and not throw the ball? This leads me to believe our WRs are simply not getting open, and I can’t say that I am surprised. Jet fans have overrated our WR corps for several years now. Faneca? Ordinary. Our most successful runs are over the right side of the line. The defense has looked solid, but what happened to the blitz packages from ’06 that were so successful?

  26. avatar Scott says:

Additionally, Coles is absolutely playing on borrowed time. I love the guy, but its only a matter of time before he is knocked OUT. For good.

  27. avatar junior says:

today was a horrible day schotty couldnt call anything right and sutton is only ok but cant stand him either mangini is slowly wearing his welcome out in ny i mean this team has talent i HATE ERIC SMITH HE HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT CRAP SINCE HE HAS BEEN HERE good thing we got rid of eric coleman another mangini move when is miller going to play? Seems like mangini tries to have that bellichek swagger but hate to break the news to him he hasnt done anything with this team by te way did i say i hate eric smith. Like it seems like either j miller isnt playing because he is hurt badly or mangini has him in the dog house so when he is up for free agency he doesnt get market value. Favre hey listen you take the good with the bad have to eat that but watching run dmc on the field today go against gholston on d oh thats right he dont play because he is terrible as well this team is in shambles and if mangini dont get the ship righted they better go and get themselves a cowher type i said during the week that this game had trap all over it and it sure bit us on the ass today embarrassed to be a jet fan and they have the balls to charge psl’s for this and hold some stupid auction for the coaches box here is my bid 0$ what a disgrace

  28. avatar alex morizio says:

    A FEW THINGS PLEASE READ:

First off I have to defend Dick Enberg. He is great. Randy Cross is a nightmare. I mean a nightmare!!!
    ON TO THE GAME:
We all need therapy after this one. No doubt. It’s not Favre’s fault. The game plan really does not give him a chance to suceed. When was the last time he went deep?? I was at the miami game when he hit Cotchery. Since then, when the hell have we had a down field pass?? and lets relax with arizona. I think we are all seeing how that was an aberation instead of what we should expect.
The blame goes from top to bottom. Do we not forget that the 6th and 30th picks in this draft have done absolutely nothing. Nothing. we traded up for Keller, and he is not an impact player. for god’s sake, if your going to trade up for the guy, you have to know that he can make a difference. think about all the guys in the second round after him, the rb’s that are doing well. would you trade keller for them now?? and how about Gholston. I mean, what a disaster. I’m sorry.

As for Mangini. I think we all agree that he is NOT a good coach. Sugar coat it all you want, he just doesn’t really have a clue, or that knack to make the right call. He never adjusts to the game plan. As a jet fan you learn things every year. when we had curtis martin you saw what it was like to have a franchise back. What this team lacks, more than anything is a NUMBER ONE RECEIVER. sorry guys. i’m such a die hard fan. I’ll never stop rooting. But this mix just isn’t going to work. I wish i was wrong. Pro

  29. avatar NY Expat says:

It takes talent to allow the greenest quarterback in the league to feel comfortable dropping back all day.

Not the kind of talent I want coaching my team, but talent nonetheless.

  30. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Great points by all who contributed. Lets face it, Brian Schottenhiemer is a glorified QB coach that has no business as a play caller or coordinator in the NFL. If not for daddy getting him in san diego and phil rivers being extraordinary talented and football savvy,(cause he sure has taken a step back w/o Brian? uh… sarcasm) this guy would be coaching the single wing in high school. As long as he is Off Cord. the jets will never sniff the div title. He had one year with Chad where the motion threw people off and they made the wildcard. He’s done. Arizona was a fluke, they were beat up all over the defense and shot from the time change when they played them. This guy is incapable of putting a gameplan together and calling a game with any sort of rythym to it, week to week The FIRE SCHOTTY chants SHOULD start at the meadowlands. On defense I will not even waste the time, No Kris Jenkins this defense is ranked 25-32nd in the league. Bob Sutton is clueless.FIRE SUTTON let me hear you. But part of the blame belongs to Mangini, who is really getting on my last nerve. This guy talks about the “effort and fight” of the jets. The NFL aint a Disney movie Mandunski, they are PAID to play hard. Effort and fight should be the least of your worries. Im also sick of the way he talks to the media with his wimpy lispy voice. He acts like people dont know when they just witnessed absolutely disgusting football. ‘Go back to the tape, ‘we blitzed more than that’, ‘he has a unique skill set’, the best is “when we get it corrected, we’ll win more consistently when we dont turn the ball over and commit penalties’ No $#i+ sherlock, how much more time do u have with a 39 yr old HOFame QB. This guy is too much of an egghead with no emotion, he sits on the sideline with that stupid look on his face like The Penguin, while the game collapses around him. Too bad Mike T and Woody have given this guy the keys to the mansion Ferarri and yacht, cause they are in love and he can go 6-10, 7-9 with this team and payroll and nothing will happen. His free ride should be over and someone needs to be held accountable. This team is at the crossroads RIGHT NOW. It now or never…

P.S Our recievers cant handle any kind of physical corners

  31. avatar oscarfactor says:

Predictability + old, interception-prone QB + long field because of no turnovers = loss to inferior team.

Why are any of you surprised?

  32. avatar EddieC says:

i find myself every week saying how i wish we had a good running back…our back ran for 150 and somehow our offense was able to fail

favre looked like he was handed the playbook 10 minutes before the coin toss.

    did cotch and coles play??

we’re a struggling football team and I cant take it anymore to lose to OAKLAND, the only team i hate more than the pats

not saying im going to hang up my jersey, but we need to figure something out NOW…lucky for us we have the worst team in football next sunday but we are not at the level of competition right now

  33. avatar JoeMustGo says:

This team is a direct reflection of it’s coaching staff. Tentative, conservative, uninspiring and at times overmatched. They have more than enought talent to compete but they don’t have enough heart to impose their will on a crappy team like Oakland. No one expected Mangini to be Parcells or Belechick in year one but it doesn’t look like he or the team has evolved since he’s been here. They have 8-8 written all over them. Kinda sounds like Herm, doesn’t it?

  34. avatar ian says:

agree with all the coaching staff comments. that overtime playcalling was just awful

but as for the WR’s not getting open, the raiders’ CB’s are actually pretty good. namdi asomugha has been one of the best CB’s in the league over past 3-4 yrs and deangelo hall can play when he has his head straight. the players that should have been getting open were wr 3, whether it be chasni or b.smith, and the TE. especially since raiders just benched former starting safety michael huff.

also, favre seemed to have room to run for a first several times but instead opted to throw dicey passes. i know he’s old, but he should be able to run 3-4 yds when there’s nobody in front of him

  35. avatar Matt says:

Does anyone have Bill Cowher’s phone number?

  36. avatar jas says:

I feel much better after this game. At least Ed and I are not the only ones who now believe this coaching staff is horrible. You guys are going on and on about this or that play, but it is like this every week. Stop drinking the Koolade and accept the fact that Shotty and Sutton are in over their heads and are WAY too cute for their own good. We should have blitzed everyone for a quarter and their offense would have been done. Our offense is just silly. And for you Favre haters, the scheme Shotty used let him get hit every play-not good. Getting open for receivers is so much about schemes and these guys have no clue. This is horrible.

  37. avatar Dan Mazz says:

We need to leave a blank checkbook for a superstar head coach next season.

  38. avatar Andrew Weiss says:

First, let’s stop blaming the players. All teams have weaknesses and the good ones find ways to minimize the deficiencies. On the whole, we’ve got excellent personnel on both sides of the ball. It CAN’T be Eric Smith’s fault that we lost to an undermanned Patriots and a self-destructive Raiders team.

The problem, as some have astutely pointed out, is that we are game planning as if we could change our personality each week without stopping to build a personality in the first place. How many times have you done this? Sat and watched a foundering drive and said to the television or your brother-in-law “Why aren’t we playing smash-mouth?” We clearly have a superiority in personnel. Why don’t we build on that.

How many times have we heard that the old Packers under Lombardi did the same thing every week. Other teams simply couldn’t stop it because they executed it so well. How about the Pats? 3-receiver sets on 90% of their plays last year. Line up. Do what you do and make the other team stop it. That’s football.

Until Mangini takes a stand and says “This is what we are” we’re going to be mediocre at best.

  39. avatar zenlaw says:

    I missed the game.

    You all sound pretty upset.

    Did something happen?

  40. avatar WozzyBear says:

Why do so many people keep letting the defense off the hook? Yes, they played well enough to win, but you had an incredibly inexperienced QB unfer center for Oakland, and how many times did the Jets defense blitz? Where was the pressure?

When they finally decided to blitz in OT< it was too late, and the few times they tried it throughout the game, you had Rhodes coming ona safety blitz from 25 yards deep. What the heck is the point of that?

And I laughed constantly the past 2 weeks when the media made it seem like Eric Smith being suspended was a loss. It was actually a blessing, because that guy is awful! He constantly looks lost out there.

The O-line was awful and couldn’t protect Favre, but I was actually more annoyed by Sutton’s joke of a game-plan on defense. This is the second time this season that a team had a completely inexperienced QB under center, and the Jets applied zero pressure on him (NE w/ Cassel being the other).

    This coaching staff is awful.

  41. avatar Jose the Jet says:

WE NEED TO TRADE FOR OCHO CINCO!!!!

  42. avatar jets fan says:

Ive been trying to be a fan of Mangini but that time has come to an end. We need someone like Bill Cowher in here. The jets consistently are not ready to play every week. We have the pieces we just need the leadership

  43. avatar Jets = Misery says:

I was kind of upset yesterday that I had an event to go to during the Jet game… Then, there I was, sitting in the pizzeria, and out of the corner of my eye I saw a television screen with the game on. I came over to it, and to my shock (I don’t know why I was shocked, maybe I’m just a glutton for punishment) the Jets were losing to the Raiders…

I think they should start picking people off the street to coach the team, we’ve had poor coaching since Parcells.

  44. avatar jim says:

same old jets?….i’m still sick to my stomach

ten games left…we need at least 7 of em…now we have to beat a team on the schedule we “aren’t supposed” to beat…this one’s on favre….not on shotty…there were play out there..favre was off…he’ll make it up

  45. avatar Sean says:

    Matt Rossetti:

Great point. Why open up the game throwing the ball to Baker who is allergic to the YAC when we drafted a TE who is faster than most LBs in the league.

    PATHETIC GAME PLAN.

  46. avatar TC says:

I keep hearing the JETS don’t know what there Idenity is……Doesn’t that come from the coaching staff?? The coaching staff doesn’t know what there Idenity is!!!!!!

  47. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

The whole coaching staff is a joke, they run high school plays out there. The motion is a penalty waiting happen before the snap. Schottenhiemer has no feel for a drive and rythym of the game. Mangini needs to hold these guys accountable and FIRE someone. He is a fat, whiter version of herm and Bill Cowher looks pretty good right now… If this keeps up we owe it to ourselves to let this team hear it, Someone has to go, Schotty, Sutton or Mangini, lets get the chants started, Ill be in section 310 FIRE SOMEONE

  48. avatar F@&K Doug Brien says:

I don’t know how much longer I can handle this flirtation with excellence and then the total collapse into mediocrity.

  49. avatar frank from east meadow says:

The Jets Suck, Magini is a gutless wonder he should be an accountant not a football coach . No fire . We need a coach that is going to bring fire and emotion to the table….. The jets just go through the motions time and time again…

  50. avatar marty says:

Mangini is here for a while with WOODY at the helm. All WOODY cares about is PSL’s and making money. He is not a football person. Cowher should be on the phone with WOODY to get a deal going for next year. FAVRE will retire with an 8-8 season …. who would want to come back to this? We will be stuck with NO QB and will need to get a new one in the draft. Buffalo has a new QB, PAts will have Brady back next year and we will be starting from scratch with ????. FIRE THIS COACHING STAFF and get COWHER

  51. avatar roam says:

The only games you can count on the jets winning are
the last games of the season when they need to lose to get a better draft pick. They always win those.
A game like this against Oakland they never win.

  52. avatar Andy says:

You guys said it all–the coaching stinks and Mangini should spit the gum out and spend more time on coaching. What a waste he is!!!

  53. avatar Reprocity says:

Honest question: When was the last time we “put the nail in the coffin” on anybody? Has there been a game yet where we came out firing and then shut down the Offence?

Why did we rush only 3 people against the raiders and sometimes 4? LB are not meant to cover people 1 on 1 but are more better suited for a zone. If you only rush 3 then somebody will get open. DUH! Raiders send 6 after Farve but we send 3 after Russell… Sad Sad Sad. Promote Callahan and Bryan Cox!

BRYAN COX for DC! you heard it hear folks.
