Today the Jets head west to take on the Oakland Raiders. Al Davis loves to build teams that are bigger, tougher, stronger and faster than others, but the question remains as to whether this highly talented team can pull together and live up to the expectations of some of the vastly talented players on this roster. The team came out flat for their new head coach last weekend, Tom Cable, but the team might be ready to bounce back. With a stable of excellent running backs and a solid pass-rush the Jets are wisely respecting their opponent
Matchups to consider …
Jets Run Offense v. Raiders Run Defense - The more I see of the Jets this season the more I believe that it’s not the line that is holding the run-game back, it’s the runners. Despite the touchdowns, Thomas Jones hasn’t had a great season and Leon hasn’t show his regular game breaking abilities while running the ball, the pass is where he’s been effective. The Jets will get their yards, but unless they start to do some things differently, they’re going to continue to struggle running the ball.
Jets Pass Offense v. Raiders Pass Defense - Although the Raiders have names like Asoumougha and Hall in their backfield the unit has not been able to keep the ball away from opponents top receivers. The Jets will get their heavy lifting done with Cotch and Coles today.
Jets Run Defense v. Raiders Run Offense – Discipline will be key here. The Raiders have three great runners. The Jets have the players to shut these runners down, they just need to not overpursue or they’ll get burned for longer gains. The Jets are going to give up some yards, but with a Raiders mediocre line, the Jets might be able to create some tackles for loss, which is how they can slow down this unit by putting them in longer down and distance situations.
Jets Pass Defense v. Raiders Pass Offense – JaMarcus Russell has a literal cannon attached to his shoulder and he’s not afraid to use it. Without an INT so far this season, this is just what Safety Kerry Rhodes is praying for in today’s game. Russell had a tough game last week against the Saints, going just 13-35 last week. Today expect Tom Cable to simplify the passing game for him, and to decrease his workload, meaning that the run is likely where the Raiders will win or lose this game. Look to see how replacement WR Chaz Schilens plays for Ronald Curry.

dink dink dink….. nice downfield passing so far.
a muffed punt…and a pick in the end zone…
need a big play…TJ running great, so where is the play action pass already?
-
Play calling is seriously problematic. Every time Jones touches the ball its 10 yards.
I really don’t want this to spiral into a same old Jets loss. Certainly has all the makings….
-
Where is Jenkins?
Eric Smith is the worst safety in the NFL.
-
last play of 3rd quarter….3rd and 5…LETS RUSH 3!!!
result…a 7 yd completion….
this is $$@@!!@ disgusting. how can a team run like we have today….and have points??
OH WAIT….i have the answer….
BECAUSE SOMEHOW WITH THAT GREAT OF A RUNNING ATTACK…WE ARE THROWING 10 YARD PASSES…..
and nice stat just now…we have 0 yes ZERO points in the 3rd quarter this year.
russell 20 yd pass….yep…let him sit back there and pick us apart.
wow our coaches are great….
bye bye sutton…even with a great run defense we blow….and bye bye schott….good riddance.
reeeeeeeeeeks of a awwwwwffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuullll LOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
-
and eric smith does need to be cut…he is useless
-
Where is the pressure? This was supposed to be a game where our D could impose their will. WTF?
-
fake punt…great call…and typically we get beyond burned…
and on 2nd and 19…lets not cover the only player on the raiders who can change the game….mcfadden.
wow i wish we could have drafted him…..
wow…does our coaching…S-U-C-K.
cant wait for the mangini press conference….more bland lame excuses why we can look that “good” on offense…the drive to tie it at 10 was a great mix of playcalling….the running game has been great….and we have 10 freaking points…
we need a miracle….
-
What is going on with the Jets…
Favre is not looking right…
Smith suckssss
-
no challenge on the coles catch?????
nah its not an impt catch…no need to be first and 10 on the last drive of the game….
more….GREAT….COACHING…
we are a joke…
u wanna be considered an above average team…u beat the most screwed up team in the league…that started the game with more false starts and offsides then a high school team…..
and we are gonna lose…..
b/c our coaching sucks….
-
Bad coaching! Rushing 3 against Russell and going open every play and letting Farve take hits!
-
yes!!!!!!!
-
Its time to stop hatin’, and start backin your team boys
-
huge, now, just . . . find . . . . a .. . . way . .. . to . . . .. win
-
huge, now, just . . . find . . . . a .. . . way . .. . to . . . .. win, baby!
-
Come on boys
-
THANK GOD WE HAVE BRETT FAVRE FOR THIS GAME!!!
-
HE’S A LITTLE BIT GREEDY SOMETIME. JUST GET THE FIRST DOWN!!!
-
WE NEED A TRICK PLAY. FAKE THE RUN AND GIVE IT BACK TO BRETT!!
-
Lets go D
-
I CANT WATCH ANYMORE. WE HAD THE BALL THREE TIMES ON OT!!!
-
Disgusting, inexcusable, EMBARRASSING display by the offense. Absolutely revolting.
-
If you didn’t see this coming, you’re not a Jets fan.
-
i saw it coming…..
-
Joe B is right…..still cant score 13 pts and run the ball that great.
only this forever-losing franchise loses on a 57 yd fg.
sick guts by favre, stuck, brad smith on the tying drive….smith might have scored…but since he is a jet….
but in the end…coaching costs us again.
being a fan of this team is beyond embarassing
-
Damn it that hurts…
-
stunned disbelief that we are not going to be 5-2 heading into week 9
-
We just made russell look good/avg. I will give Jan his props… That was an amazing freaking kick! Same kudos to feeley :) Did we get banged up out there? Woody, Coles, Cotchery, Farve, Pace. Not Jets football.
-
liam…the coaches wouldnt let it happen.
i might be nuts…but the only blitz i saw or saw work well was the one on 3rd down before the game winning fg…
how we didnt force one freaking turnover against that offense is sickening.
mangini press conference…..”i am proud of the way we fought on the last drive to tie it”…. yeah great…
WE DIDNT FORCE ONE TURNOVER AGAINST AN AWFUL OFFENSIVE TEAM…..THATS IT.
wow is this one painful….thank g-d herm is in next week….
-
You can’t have followed this team for any length of time and be stunned or even surprised by this loss. Underachievement is the hallmark of this franchise. How else can you keep a streak of 40 years of futility intact? Another 4 hours of my life wasted!
PS, nice job by Baker falling down on the throw that should have set up the winner.
-
First off, with the running game working so well where was the play action?
However, I’m tired of hearing of you whiney @?# fans. If just a few of you stood strong with your team maybe it would catch on. Instead, your there for the glory and b+@tch about the bad. Its a big reason why players don’t want to play for the JETS.
-
FIRE MANGINI THAT FAT A$$ SUCKS
-
OT play calling horrendous…simply b/c of the lack of creativity.
ran all over them….their D is gassed….u can run reverses like u did on the TD drive that tied it at 10…
schott is such a wus…..only he would lose a game where his offensive line gets him 7 yards a carry!!
spread formation early…great…rhythem great…..sometimes schott gets it…
but then he loses it…..when it matters most…
hmmmm…
WHATS HIS LAST NAME???
IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY…. -
I have no idea why they didn’t run more. I really didn’t trust Favre at all today. Not sure why, but he was holding onto the ball too long and getting rushed a lot.
Jones was doing great.
-
This is televised torture… I may sue the Jets for giving me heart palpitations, I cannot believe how bad our coach is. I cannot wait till the Jets go 8-8, miss the playoffs and Woody Fires Mangina and his henchman. Then maybe Cowher will be in green next season. We will never be good again without a great coach.
What type of Offense doesn’t win when your HB rushes for 159! and D holds opposing team to 13 at end of regulation?
WHERE THE FUGG WAS THE PLAY ACTION?DAMN YOU WOODY SO HELP ME IF YOU DON’T GET THIS TURTLE OUTTA NY.
-
I’ve been watching the Jets for what seems like an eternity. This game was like hundreds of others before it. Strangely enough, I have grown to almost enjoy it. It’s kind of like self mutilation. Or the Stockholm Syndrome of football, Do I need some professional help, or is this rational after what I have been through?
-
big bad bob…exactly…how can u run that well and not play action off it….
on ONE of those OT drives…how can u not try it on first down ONE FREAKING TIME!!!!
your other comment about us whiney fans….dude….how many of these losses do we have to suffer through???
“thats why nobody wants to play for the jets”
gimme a break bro…..thats a bit dramatic =)
and where is the “glory” u speak of??? =)
-
Big Bad Bob – Agreed re: the play action.
Let’s call a spade a spade. Favre was lousy today, and this is two games in a row. Sure, I felt great about him after the Arizona game, but he’s either faced two great pass defenses (I doubt it) or he’s just not into it. The guy looked, dare I say, indifferent on the sideline.
For the sake of the franchise, I hope I’m wrong. But if he just goes through the motions this year and then bolts at the end of the season, we are beyond screwed.
Kudos to TJ and the defense today. Yeah, neither got the big play, but both kept the team in the game.
The futility of the passing game was unbelievable. Thanks a lot Mr. Baker for falling down on the game-winning pass most likely. Hope your Red Bentley has a flat tire tonight.
-
242 rushing yards….242!!!!
AND WE LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes we turned it over 3 times….
but we didnt force one…..thats why we lost….
the D is clearly better….and not forcing a turnover isnt really their “fault”….but since we didnt blitz alot…
it means the coaches didnt help…

“Harlan Lachman, on October 16th, 2008 at 8:24 pm Said:
A weapon is a threat to the opponent. Smith is more a virus, he hurts our own team because when we play him at QB, we take Favre out as QB. As a WR, he only is decent at end arounds. Not a WR main job. He is not a great runner. Leon, MIller, Wallace and Carroll have more solid plays on specials.
The guy is a talent without a position. The definition of someone to cut.
harlan”Good call smart guy. He was a hell of a virus today.
-
Our coaching staff is horrible. Defense put on zero pressure and Offensive play-calling is the worst. The team didn’t lose, the coaches lost this game. We made a horrible team look good. We came out in that stupid, empty backfield formation and did nothing but get Farve abused. We threw to Chris Baker, who did nothing after the catch. We should have been throwing to Dustin Keller. In OT, the play-calling was as boring as drying paint.
If we lost to Oakland, we can forget the playoffs. We should be looking at potential coaches and college draft picks. Let Marcus Henry play WR.
-
Hey, Bob. What “glory” are you referring to? I must have missed it.
BTW,if you really think the players give a crap about what the fans say in some blog, you must also think they can hear you when you call plays in Madden ’08.
-
Klecko: maybe a bit strong, but I stand by the reasoning. But, I just wish there was some strength in our fans.
-
I’m by no means giving up on the season, but just curious, who are the top QB’s coming out in next year’s draft?
-
WERE THE HELL WAS FARVE?…………
-
Can someone create a video montage of dissapointing last minute losses in the last 20 years? Of course add this one -
-
Give Jenkins and Favre the game off next week and start subs.We need them fresh for the rest of the season and both look like they could use a vacation.
-
agree bob….and you KNOW we are dying to embrace this team.
they have some great talent…. but so far it seems like the coaching doesnt know what to do with it.
the play calling in OT??? the lack of a blitz??
like oakland has WR’s that we cant man-up against??
oak had 14 accepted penalties…and we ran for 242…tenn ran for 250+ against the chiefs…they win going away…
i got nothing against mangini….unless he is calling the plays. The D has tons of talent…but i havent seen many impact plays from harris, rhodes….etc…the guys who are supposed to change games on D arent.
some of that is coaching…has to be.
jenkins is a freaking beast!!!! and besides stuffing the run….his presence should also mean we can blitz more and make plays!!
THAT WAS OAKLANDS OFFENSE OUT THERE!!!! YES THEY SCORED 16….BUT THEY WERE NEVER “THREATENED” ON OFFENSE….
they ran pretty well….b/c they are a great running team…but too often we sat back on pass plays and let russell hit wide open guys.
coaching coaching coaching

Unfortunatly, due to many years of standing by our team, my version of “glory” is a bit scued. But’ I still take my “glory” when I can get it. And I never said anything about this blog having anything to do with players making decisions about playing with our team. But, as strong as this blog is, it should represent a good portion of our fan basis. And, as unstable as a good portion of the fans in this blog are, I would expect that would represent our fan basis as well. Thanks for making me sound like a lawyer”JoeMustGo”.
-
You sound more like Sarah Palin.
-
Nice job joe
-
Not trying to pick a fight with you, Bob. It’s just that the main purpose of this blog is to give fans a place to vent. It’s hard to be “strong” when you see the unmistakable signs that we’re in for 10 more weeks of uninspiring football, culminating in a 9-7 record, no playoffs and a three year extension for Mangini and co. for a job well done.
-
Oh yeah, and Favre walks away at the end of the year. Then we spend the next 2-3 years trying to rush one of the understudies into the job while Jenkins, Pace and Faneca’s skills continue to erode. Seen this movie way too many times.
-
My point is exactly what your pushing JOE, most JET fans on this blog don’t truly stand by our team. I read this blog all the time, occasionally making a comment here and there. I have lived in a lot of places not named NY or NJ. I am typically the only (maybe one other) JET fan at the sports bars I go to. But, I stand there alone and most times yell J! E! T! S! JETS! JETS! JETS! every chance I get. I used to think that it would kick a&& if I was closer to home, but then I read the comments that the Joe Shmuckatellies who don’t have a spine on this blog write . At one moment they write about how they finally have the missing piece, then they take that same piece and beat the crap out of him. It just gets old. It would probably be easier to stop reading what you all have to say, but just as I watch our beloved JETS every weekend, I read this blog every day. Man, now I sound I sound like I’m asking for change.

Good job by the defense in holding the Raiders to a field goal after Leon’s muff. These turnovers, man..
