Unsubstantiated Rumor: (Updated) Leon to NOT be Suspended?
As many of you will have seen, ESPN is reporting that several players are to be suspended by the league for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. ESPN names Deuce McAllister and Will Smith of the Saints and Houston Long Snapper Bryan Pittman, but says there are a few other big names set to be released. Unfortunately for the Jets, several message boards are claiming that Fox Radio in Denver read out the full list and Jets RB Leon Washington is on it.
I repeat that this is unsubstantiated and I am not the source!
Facts on this are sketchy to say the least, but I have been able to piece together the following details from various reports:
* The league told the players involved about this two weeks ago, so they would have time to put together an appeal;
* There is no talk of steriods, but they have apparently detected a diuretic (a la Jesse Chatman), which can be used to flush steroids and other banned substances from the system;
* Anyone found guilty will get a four game ban, assuming it’s their first offence;
* While suspended, you don’t count towards the roster limit;
* It sounds as if the players cited will play this weekend and face suspension next week;
* Other notables on the list include ex-Jet Jason Ferguson and fellow divisional rival Donte Whitner, but no Patriots.
Now, let’s hope the report is inaccurate.
EDIT: 11:38 a.m. ET – ESPN now reports that the list of players is only 8 and confirms that another Saint (Charles Grant) is among them. It should be noted that neither Grant nor Pittman were on the reported list from Fox-31 in Denver, so the list does appear to be inaccurate. Fingers crossed. We continue to have faith that Leon is innocent for now…
EDIT: Sunday 7:44 p.m. ET – Fox Sports have released three more names, which means that only one of the eight in jeopardy is yet to be named. In short, it’s looking good for Leon, who showed this afternoon how important he is to the Jets.

I hope this is just a rumor or it will hurt more to know that one of out most explosive players is hiding this behind the coaching staff’s back. I just hope this is just a rumor.
correction: I hope it is just a rumor.
if its true it is a diuretic….then i am really not going to be upset….alot of over the counter supps like diuretics all come up as positives….
and if anyone thinks that the use of this stuff does not go on with all players in the nfl u are definately wrong….
these guys just got caught and its unfortunate…..
Man, I hope this isn’t true but makes me feel good about Miller and Chatman being available. For all the heat the team has taken for roster issues – some of it justified – having these guys to fill two big holes that Leon would leave looks awfully good now.
Diuretics are a tricky situation for the league. They’re commonly used to drop weight quickly – like maybe to satisfy weight related contract clauses, or to gain back a few fractions of speed after a bye week food binge? – but can also be used to flush steroids. They don’t prove that steroids were used, they just evoke enough suspicion to warrant a ban by the NFL. Still, player have to know the deal and be extremely careful about what they put in their bodies.
U GOTTA BE FN KIDDING ME! COME ON LEON!!!
Is this a Glazer report………..
I don’t believe it for one second. I’m just getting tired of the whole “masking agent” thing. Anything can be considered a masking agent. The protein shakes these guys drink can be masking agents.
If a guy tests positive, then and only then, should we consider them to have cheated. Period.
Why is everyone surprised? These things are happening all over the world. I’m surprised it hasn’t gone on in Hockey yet. It probably has but everyone is so hush hush in hockey.
I was just watching one of the Saturday NFL shows and they stated that the JETS coaching staff is holding back Favre and the JETS Offense. They also said that if the coaches don’t find a way to turn Brett loose, there will be JETS coaches fired.
DUMP MANGINI, SCHOTT and SUTTON!!!!
Dump Schott and Sutton, not Mangini.
You guys got to be kidding! Plays do not hold the QB back. They aren’t designed that way, and that must be obvious. Route trees give the QB the option to throw to any open receiver, but they have to be open enough for even a gunslinger like Favre to throw it. If he holds the ball, it isn’t by design, it’s by circumstance.
Please don’t be so ignorant that you throw out such drivel on this site. Try CBS sports if you must.
Foonzie:
I guess the PREd(itor) has not learned anything at all. He refuses to read ANY comments only his own !!! He is a complete left winger in love with his own BS.
As soon as we get our act together, everyone, and I mean everyone WILL LOVE THE COACHING STAFF
FIRE SCHOTTY!
As of right now, he is the weakest link and there are no if ands or buts about it. If you do not agree with that then you must not be watching the games and just watching NFL.com highlights.
Mangini deserves until the end of the season possibly even 1 more year. Sutton doesn’t deserve the heat right now.
SCHOTTY MUST GO!
ALL THINGS NY:
Will you continue your demented argument to fire the coach(s) even if we make the playoffs? Oh….. thats right, you will give ALL the credit to FARVE !!!
The guy is an infiltrator. Spreading BS. Kick him off the site.
bilvv, ALL THINGS NY, EDITOR,
You have no understanding of what hank/naples is saying. You can’t even see through your own eyes as you are completely blinded in a brown haze. I can’t help you but I will find someone who will. You little click is what it is.
correction: your little click is what it is.
You see all three of you forget that this coaching staff not the players is what we have as the face of this team without them we would be in a worse off position. Lets see when the games really begin to count in December and how much FARVE is begging for a beating because that is what he is going to get. A huge butt-kicking and that will prove to you that he is a self-centered egotistical person who he loves to cajole you fans into believing he is 100 percent for the team. He is a liar, a drug and alcohol addict, and a problem for Mangini. It seems that all three of you love him and it shows your intelligence to agree with him (a dumb hillbilly).
Hey subwayfare
You still haven’t learned Miller is not a solution he is a hinderance that is why Mangini is not activating him. I see how much you follow Leon, enough to ignore him when we need him most and that is in the next four game stretch.
Justin Miller is terrible in coverage, and has awful ball skills. For example, look at guys like Revis & Lowery. They are always around the ball! Even if they can’t break it up or intercept it, you can be sure they will make the tackle. Miller can’t do any of those three things. Justin Miller is a liability, who will be released after this season.
If the Jets lose today, it is time to sit Brett Favre and start Brett Ratliff. Remember, we only give up a 1st round pick if Favre plays a certain number of snaps. So maybe, the Jets can escape this embarrassing season with Ratliff getting some experience, an 8-8 record, a first round pick. Best case scenario at this point.
And those of you who think the Jets will go 7-3 in the next 10 games are nuts. We’re talking about the same old Jets here.
Fonzie-
You seem to have missed my point: that if Leon is suspended for four games, God forbid, we may be fortunate enough to have a healthy Miller back. You may recall that Miller, while never fulfilling his promise as a DB, went to the Pro Bowl as a kick returner before Leon inherited the job. My goal was to illustrate how two players we have on the roster might help us overcome a disastrous suspension.
However, since I find your invective-filled, bigoted, comments in this thread below the threshold of discourse expected in a cvil society, I will no longer respond to you.
